Microhydel is a cheap and environmentally friendly source of Electricity, specially for the Mountainous Part of Khyber Pukhtoonkhwa, SRSP through its unique approach of Social Mobilization is partnering with PEACE and various Organizations to tap this hydro electric potential for the benefit of the Rural Communities of the Area.

REHABILITATION & UPGRADATION OF SHYDO
MHP AT THALL UC KALKOT DIR UPPER
SHYDO has constructed 400 KW micro hydro power project in the isolated area of Dir
Upper. The area was not connected to national grid. The population of the whole union
council Kalkot is scattered in three valleys/villages i.e. Thall, Lamotai and Kalkot. The
said MHP was handed over to a contractor on lease. However he after some time the
contractor was fed up due to non-payment of monthly bills by the community and he
left. The MHP was then non-functional for about 8 years and in this period, the people
somehow managed to set up 20 MHPs of 15KW-50 KW enlightening the whole valley
of Thall.

There were elders from all the
tribes of the area and all of
them were agreed to upgrade
the MHP to the extent that
can run heaters for cooking
and heating. The elders said
that we have knocked at the
door of ex-MNA as well for
the rehabilitation of the MHP
but he put a deaf ear to our
request and we lost hope as
the local people did not have
enough resources and
expertise to rehabilitate it.

One of the elders of the
community said that our
people need mega MHP
for heating and cooking
purposes as we already
have MHPs for lighting.
We are rapidly losing our
forests and use it as fuel
wood. If SRSP is serious
in mega MHP, we will
contribute 50% in the
mega MHP. This
contribution will come
from royalty of our forests
and in this way we can
save our forests.

The RPM SRSP Dir said that
presently the MHP has been
designed to upgrade upto 1.2
MW however the SRSP
engineer will re survey the
site measuring the maximum
discharge and head/fall to
assess the maximum limit of
the said MHP. He said that on
the average, the targeted
beneficiaries (1800 HHs)
consume fuel wood of 150
million PKR per annum and if
the MHP can save the
consumption of fuel wood, it
would be a great
achievement for SRSP as
well as the people of Kalkot.

The MPA who is also
resident of the same union
council Kalkot, said that it is
a golden opportunity in the
form of SRSP to revive the
MHP that is out of order and
non-functional for the last
eight years. He said that
SRSP should try its level
best to upgrade this MHP to
the maximum without
thinking about the resources
as on one hand the
community is ready
contribute considerably and
secondly I can also arrange
adequate amount of fund
from the government as well.

The MPA Muhammad Ali addressing the community on the occasion emphasizing the
importance of hydro power projects in the area. He also said that they are thankful to SRSP
from the core of his heart as the elected representatives have very limited funds which are
disproportionate to the problems of the area.
