# Small Simple Steps
2. Limitless Motivation: The Why
Motivation:
The purpose one has for taking action. The energy required for someone to behave in a particular way.
6. Purpose & Passion
Purpose & Passion:
• Know your purpose in life helps you live with
integrity: who you are, what you are, why you
are.
• Your life purpose consists of the central
motivating aims of your life – the reasons why
you get up in the morning. Purpose can guide
life decisions, influence behaviour, shape
goals, offer a sense of direction, and create
meaning.
• Passion is not about choosing the right path or
perfect destiny. It’s about experimenting to
see what ignites joy.
• Passion comes when we rediscover our
authentic, alive self.
• When we exchange a fixed mindset for a
growth mindset, we learned that interest &
passion can be cultivated through experience,
investment and struggle.
• Passion is what lights you up inside,
• Purpose is about how you relate to other
people.
Passion = What’s so meaningful to you that you crave it and
become enthusiastic about it; an inward impact
Purpose = What you were put on this earth to do; an
outward impact
Motivation = Purpose x Energy x S3
7. The Sweet Spot
• The sweet spot is where passion and purpose
align. For example, you have a passion for
helping children in impoverished countries and
your purpose is to help eradicate disease and
famine in impoverished countries. It fulfills your
internal impact and maximizes your outward
impact.
• And though this may be the case, it still takes
action on your part to fulfill your purpose. For
example, if your passion and purpose are to
help impoverished children, but you do nothing
about it, then your purpose is left out to dry like
wet clothes.
• Purpose takes action.
When Your Passion Isn’t Your Purpose
• Most people are aware of their passions, but
few are aware of their purpose.
• If you’re not living your purpose, it’s likely
you’re spending a lot of time with your passions
instead.

8. Generating Limitless Brain Energy . . .
1. A good brain diet: Avocados, berries,
broccoli, dark chocolate, eggs, green leafy
vegetables, salmon, turmeric, walnuts,
water, …
2. Brain nutrients
3. Exercise
4. Killing ANTS (Automatic Negative Thoughts)
5. Clean environment
6. Positive peer group
7. Brain protection
8. New learning
9. Stress management
10.Sleep
“When you give your body the best possible fuel, you have more energy, you’re
stronger, you think more quickly” ~ Michelle Obama

Purpose & Passion
9. Small Simple Steps . . .
1. Be kind to yourself
2. Take baby step. 3 ways can change a
person’s behavior long term:
epiphany, change your environment
and take baby steps.
3. Small baby steps lead to habits
(autopilot). Genius is made, not
born. ➔ Discipline and deep
practice.
4. Getting in the habit. Breaking a bad
habit isn’t about ending that habit,
but rather about replacing it with a
different, more constructive habit.
Motivation plays a key role.
“We first make our habits, and then our habits
make us” ~ John Dryden
Motivation = Purpose x Energy x S3
“As you step into your limitless self, you might be
confronted with old habits & patterns that are not
necessarily based in truth. These old ways of being
show up because you have repeated many of them
thousands of times” ~ Debbie Ford
Purpose & Passion
10. “Habit is either the best of servants or
the worst of masters”
~ Nathaniel Emmons
Small Simple Steps (S3)
Motivation = Purpose x Energy x S3
1. First tactic is to truly believe your efforts improve your future.
12. Creating a New Habit
Motivation = Purpose x Energy x S3
According to Dr BJ Fogg’s research into human behavior (Stanford), you need
three forces to align in order for a certain behavior to occur. First, you
need Motivation, which isn’t constant and is notoriously hard to predict how
long that level of motivation will last. Second, a person needs the Ability to
perform said behavior, because without that, it’s quite impossible. Third, you
need to have a well-timed and properly-designed Trigger that, well, triggers
the person to act. So in order to predict a behavior, or design a process to
result in a certain action from your audience, you need to place the right
trigger in front of a relatively motivated person who has the ability to
perform that behavior right then and there.
How . . .? WIN
• W is for Want: Make sure you really
want it.
• I is for Innate: Does the new habit you’re
trying to adopt align well with your innate
abilities?
• N is for Now: Create a prompt for
yourself that encourages you to perform
the new habit now.
14. Finding Flow
If you are to become limitless, you’re going to want to get
yourself into a flow state as often as possible. … How??
Finding Flow . . .
1. Eliminate distractions
2. Give yourself enough time
3. Do something you love
4. Have clear goals
5. Challenge yourself … a little
Conquering the Enemies of Flow . . .
1. Multitasking: clear your schedule of everything else and get
into the flow.
2. Stress: Make your space impenetrable by outside stressors so
you can concentrate completely on the task at hand.
3. Fear of Failure: “Perfectionism reduces creativity and
innovation”.
4. Lack of Conviction: If you don’t believe you’re going to
accomplish anything of importance, you’ll guarantee that will
be the outcome.

16. The Art of
Performance
(Chapter 1)
• What drive our Passion?
• How do Purpose and Passion interact?
• What are the 3 levels Bloom discovered?
• When does Summit Syndrome occur? How
can we avoid it?

17. Cultivate the Interest Spark: 1.The Bloom Model
The Art of Performance: The Power of Purpose
• Major activity is Play
• Interest needs external.
activation and appraisal
(extrinsic motivation and
external activation)
• Motivation is internal, we start to invest
time because we get motivated by the
activity itself (intrinsic motivation)
• We become our own Spark
• Interest needs dedication
• Individuals completely identify
themselves with their field of
expertise
• Interest has turned into Passion
• Interest becomes Inspiration
The Bloom Model ~ Jeroen De Flander
18. Cultivate the Interest Spark: 2. Find the Spark
The Adapted Holland Model ~ Jeroen De Flander
The Art of Performance: The Power of Purpose
19. Cultivate the Interest Spark: 3. Interest Activation
1. Our brain craves novelty.
1. We need to be exposed to things that trigger our interest ➔ Situational
Motivation.
2. Our craving for novelty doesn’t stop after the Discovery stage. Our interests
keep needing “novelty” triggers, even in the Development and Deepening stages.
2. The second activation trigger is Perceived Value.
1. We need to care to raise our interest ➔ Other people play a crucial role,
especially during the early phases of the Discovery stage.
The role of parents, friends, and mentors is crucial to stimulate novelty and value, esply
during the Discovery stage.
The Art of Performance: The Power of Purpose
How can we activate our interest?
20. Cultivate the Interest Spark: 4. Summit Syndrome
Activation via novelty is crucial during the initial stage. But novelty at later stages of
interest development is equally important. If we don’t, we stop our journey or worse,
move backwards and impact our performance negatively ➔ Summit Syndrome.
The Art of Performance: The Power of Purpose
21. Cultivate the Interest Spark: 4. The Summit Syndrome
1. Actively look for and appreciate nuances.
2. Find and ride the next wave.
– To move to the next level, we would have to become
(1) a better team leader.
(2) a better internal networker, playing a positive role in company wide task forces.
(3) learn new skills to develop innovative solutions.
3. Connect your Interest with Purpose.
– Passion is interest on steroids that need novelty and perceived value to keep going.
“Anticipating the Summit Syndrome and dealing with it in earliest stages can revitalize and propel
talented leaders to greater heights” ~ Parsons & Pascale
“A successful career is not a straight line to the top. It’s a series of s-curves, each of which begins
with a major promotion or job redefinition” ~ Parsons & Pascale
The Art of Performance: The Power of Purpose
You have reached a Plateau and your interest seems to have disappeared, how to
get back on track?
23. Dip into the Purpose Pools 1. Why?
1. People look for at least 2 ways to find happiness: ~ Aristotle
1. Pleasure (Hedonic)
2. Purpose (Eudaimonic):
1. Those wo are able to match their Passion – deepened interest, with Purpose
performed far better than those who don’t.
Purpose is an extremely powerful long term performance engine
The Art of Performance: The Power of Purpose
24. Dip into the Purpose Pools 2. Why (Organization)?
Companies must encourage communities of passion by allowing individuals to find a higher
calling within their work lives, by helping to connect employees who share similar
passions, and by better aligning the organization’s objectives with the natural interests of
its people.
The Art of Performance: The Power of Purpose
Management /
Organization serves a
higher Purpose:
Socially significant and
noble goals
Enable communities of
Passion:
Employees to find higher
calling within work lives
Alignment of Company’s objectives with
the interests of its employees
25. Purpose requires an active approach to find an internal or external
community we can serve and visualize the connection (belongingness).
1. What’s the Community I want to serve?
– Community: Our family, friends, neighbours, co-workers, …
2. How can I contribute to the wellbeing of my community?
“Those with strong callings are more likely to take risk, to persist, and ultimately
succeed” ~ Daniel Heller
The Art of Performance: The Power of Purpose
Dip into the Purpose Pools 3. Purpose is Cultivated
26. Purpose requires an active approach to find an internal or external
community we can serve and visualize the connection (belongingness).
1. Shared Purpose: People work harder, smarter, longer, more generously, and
more productively when they can see their work affects others.
2. Primal Cues: Shift from “what’s in it for me?” to “what’s in it for your
community?”
3. Belonging: “Positive words from beneficiaries of employees’ work –
colleagues, serve as an important source of motivation by strengthening the
workers’ sense of belongingness” ~ Francesca Gino
The spikes in motivation are driven uniquely by an enriched appreciation of
how our work benefits the wellbeing of others
