6. Great is the Gospel of our Glorious God
Hymns of W.V. Higham (Tentmaker, 1998)
Great is the gospel of our glorious God,
Where mercy met the anger of God’s rod;
A penalty was paid and pardon bought,
And sinners lost, at last to Him were brought:
*O let the praises of my heart be Thine,
For Christ has died that I may call Him mine,
That I may sing with those who dwell above,
Adoring, praising Jesus, King of Love.
Great is the mystery of godliness,
Great is the work of God’s own holiness,
It moves my soul, and causes me to long
For greater joys than to the earth belong:
The Spirit vindicated Christ our Lord,
And angels sang with joy and sweet accord;
The nations heard, a dark world flamed with light
When Jesus rose in glory and in might:
6
9. 15 Then he returned to the man of God, he and all his
company, and he came and stood before him. And he said,
“Behold, I know that there is no God in all the earth but in
Israel; so accept now a present from your servant.”
10. 16 But he said, “As the LORD lives, before whom I stand, I
will receive none.” And he urged him to take it, but he
refused.
11. 1. Why Elisha refuses to
receive gifts from his
ministry?
11
12. 17 Then Naaman said, “If not, please let there be given to your
servant two mule loads of earth, for from now on your servant
will not offer burnt offering or sacrifice to any god but
the LORD.
13. 18 In this matter may the LORD pardon your servant: when my master
goes into the house of Rimmon to worship there, leaning on my arm,
and I bow myself in the house of Rimmon, when I bow myself in the
house of Rimmon, the LORD pardon your servant in this matter.”
19 He said to him, “Go in peace.”
14. Elisha didn’t receive the offer of Naaman as he had an oath
to God that he wont receive any gifts from his ministry.
This is to show that the God of Israel cannot be bribed or
be repaid for His goodness and blessings.
15. 1 John 1:7
But if we w___ in the l___, as
he is in the light, we have
f_______ with one another,
and the b____ of Jesus his
Son c_______ us from all s_.

19 He said to him, “Go in peace.”
But when Naaman had gone from him a short distance,

20 Gehazi, the servant of Elisha the man of God, said, “See, my master
has spared this Naaman the Syrian, in not accepting from his hand
what he brought. As the LORD lives, I will run after him and get
something from him.”
19. 2. Describe what Gehazi felt
when Elisha didn’t accept
gifts?

21 So Gehazi followed Naaman. And when Naaman saw someone running
after him, he got down from the chariot to meet him and said, “Is all
well?”

22 And he said, “All is well. My master has sent me to say, ‘There have
just now come to me from the hill country of Ephraim two young men of
the sons of the prophets. Please give them a talent of silver and two
changes of clothing.’”
22. 3. Gehazi asked for a talent of silver, but
Naaman give him two talents.
If a talent is equivalent to 35 kilograms,
compute for the estimated value of what
Gehazi had taken in today’s peso.
Given: 1kg of Silver = $ 790
1 dollar = 48 pesos 22
23. 3. 1 talent = 35 kilograms,
Given: 2 talents of silver
1kg of Silver = $ 790
1 dollar = 48 pesos
23
$790*70kgs= $ 55, 300
$ 55, 300*48= P 2, 654, 400

23 And Naaman said, “Be pleased to accept two talents.” And he urged
him and tied up two talents of silver in two bags, with two changes of
clothing, and laid them on two of his servants. And they carried them
before Gehazi.

24 And when he came to the hill, he took them from their hand and put
them in the house, and he sent the men away, and they departed.
26. 4. State sins that Gehazi
committed in verses 20, 22 & 24
based on the 10 Commandments?
26
29. 3. v. 24 ‘he took them from their hand and put them in the house
(secretly)’ Thou shall not covet
Gehazi’s sins includes:
29
1. v.20 “as the Lord lives’ – Thou shall not use the name of the Lord in
vain.
2. v. 22 ‘my Master sent me… - Thou shall not bear false witness/
lie.
30. Gehazi’s greed implied that Yahweh was a ‘Taker’ like the other gods of
Ancient Near East.
Elisha (representing God) wanted Naaman to know His free grace but
Gehazi was trying to put a price on the goodness of God.
Note:
30
But the most heinous sin he committed is to distort truth about God.

“Where have you been, Gehazi?” And he said, “Your servant went
nowhere.”

26 But he said to him, “Did not my heart go when the man turned from
his chariot to meet you? Was it a time to accept money and garments,
olive orchards and vineyards, sheep and oxen, male servants and
female servants?
33. 5. Can you state what lesson about God
Elisha wanted to teach Naaman that
Gehazi obscure or distorts?
33
34. Elisha wanted to impress to Naaman
that Yahweh is the God of grace. As
opposed to the pagan gods who ask for
some sort of pay-off or reward.
34
35. Examples includes:
Baal through gifts & body cutting
Child Sacrifice to Molech
Sexual Prostitution to Asherah
35
The idolatrous Israel & their surrounding
nations sacrifice people or themselves
In order to gain favour or prevent
punishment:

27 Therefore the leprosy of Naaman shall cling to you and to your
descendants forever.” So he went out from his presence a leper, like
snow.
37. 6. Do you know any NT story that ‘tries
to buy God’s gift with money’,
who ‘lied’
or distorts God’s message
that was warned or even punished?
37
38. NT Stories
◈ Acts 5:1-11 -Ananias & Sapphira
◈ Acts 8:19-20 -Simon the Sorcerer
◈ Gal. 2:11-14 -Paul rebukes Peter
38
39. 7. Do you know any NT verse/s telling
that ‘having a different message about
God & His Gospel’ can be dangerous?
39
40. NT Verse
◈ Galatians 1:6-9
6 I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called
you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel—
7 not that there is another gospel, but there are some who are confusing
you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ.
8 But even if we or an angel[b] from heaven should proclaim to you a
gospel contrary to what we proclaimed to you, let that one be accursed!
9 As we have said before, so now I repeat, if anyone proclaims to you a
gospel contrary to what you received, let that one be accursed!
40
41. Gehazi & the Gospel False Teacher
Gehazi is still fortunate, he had leprosy.
But anyone who distorts the gospel message is
not only endangering of an earthly punishment
but they are endangering themselves & their
hearers of hell.
◈ Jesus + Good Works, Baptism, Religion, etc.
41
45. Galatians 1:9
As we have said before,
so now I say again: If
anyone is preaching to
you a gospel contrary to
the one you received,
let him be accursed.
