Ellen von Unwerth

I think this photograph is good, because
of the contrast between the white bed
sheets and her outfit. i think it was
taken in location with bright studio
lighting, possibly also a tripod.
I like this image because the black
and white makes the photo look
more clear and the lighting better. I
think that this shoot was taken in a
location outside with natural lighting.
I like this photo because
the lighting and black and
white makes the shadows
bold and stand out. I also
think that this picture was
taken in a location and
harsh studio lighting was
used.
20. Tyler Mitchell
I like this image because the
colour and material of the
backgrounds and their shirt
make their image look good and
put a unique touch to it. I think
this was done in a studio but it
does look like natural lighting, so
maybe outside.
I like this image because it breaks the gender
norms. Also the shadows and lighting make
the image better. I think this was taken on
location or in the studio as it has a plain
background. This photo has inspired me to
base one of my images off of it.
I like this image because of the colour matching of
the lipstick and head scarf. Also the lighting helps
make the colour stand out and gives the picture a
glowy look.
21. Portraiture
Annie Leibovitz
I like this image because the
harsh lighting makes her facial
features stand out a lot. I think
this was taken in a studio with
harsh lighting and a dark
background.
I like this this image because
of the positioning of the
model and his hand being the
centre of focus. I think this
was taken on a location shoot
with natural lighting.
I like this image because the background adds
character to the photo and the soft look it has. I
think this was taken on a location shoot also
with natural lighting.
22. Zhang Jingna
I like this image because of the colour
coordination and the contrast between her
dark coloured hair and the red and white. I
think this was taken in a studio with studio
lighting and backgrounds. The models pose
could be inspire some of my photos.
I like this image because the dark
background makes the model stand out
more. Also the props and makeup, make
the image more unique. I think this image
was taken in a studio with studio lights
also, possibly edited aswell.
I like this image because of the
background pattern and her dress
stands out because of the colour
difference. This could’ve been done
in a location or studio, but studio
lighting was used.
23. Christel Bangsgaard

I like this image because of the mix of
bold shadowing and bright colours. I
think this was taken in a studio and
probably edited. I may use the bright
makeup colours in some of my shoots as
they did inspire me.
I like this picture because of the different
colour lighting on her face, it makes the
makeup stand out. I think this was taken in
the studio with studio lighting and editing.
I like this image because of the contrast
of both of their skin tones, and her nail
varnish. I think this was taken in a
studio with studio lighting.
24. Tamaki Yoshida
I think this photo is good,
because of the contrast
between her pale skin and
lighter hair, and her darker
lips. I think it was taken in a
studio with studio lighting.
I like this image because the shadowing
and the bright lighting make the
makeup stand out. I think it was taken
in a studio with studio lighting.
I like this image because of the softness
that the lighting gives it, as its not as
harsh. I think it was taken in a studio and
possibly edited.
26. Ziqian Liu
I chose this photographer and images because
they look quite simple but are hard to get the right
angles and positions to not get the camera in the
mirror. So it would be a challenge but you also get
a good picture and practice out of it.
I also like these images because they are self
portraits and look like they take a lot of time too
set up and get good images.
27. Rankin
I chose Rankins photos for this task,
because I liked the up close personal
feeling and also the colours and
patterns in the pictures make them
stand out.
28. Miles aldridge I chose these miles Aldridges pictures because I
like the bright colours and the matching colours.
They make the images stand out and catch your
attention. I feel like these would be hard to
recreate but I will try, as I find them very
creative.
29. ISO- refers to the image sensors sensitivity to light, the lower the number the less
sensitive.
Shutter Speed- The length of time when the film or digital sensor inside the camera is
exposed to light, also when a camera's shutter is open when taking a photograph.
Aperture- This controls how much the lens is open and how much light can pass through
it.
Depth of field- depth of field is the distance between the nearest and the farthest
objects that are in acceptably sharp focus in an image
30. Rankin This shoot was
based on one of
Rankins
photographs, I did
this shoot a few
times as the heart
on her face didn’t
come out how I
wanted it too.
But I like these final images as the heart is
a lot more clearer and her facial
expressions look good on the image. It isn’t
very similar to the photographers work but
it is my own take on it, and I feel that I did
a good job using another persons
photography.
I used the studio and used makeup to put
the heart on her face.
31. Rankin
I chose this rankin photograph thinking it wouldn’t be too difficult to base
one of my pictures on it. But while I was doing it I found it harder to do
then I expected. I don’t like it as much as the others and if I had time I
would definitely re do it, but I didn’t give myself enough time, which is
something I need to work on.
I used the studio again, but lighting in the image is a bit off
so, I also think I need to work on my skills in the studio. I like
how the makeup is different but still similar to the original,
and its in a similar position. But over all, if I could I would do
this shoot again.
32. Rankin
For this photograph I used the studio, but the lighting is very off and doesn’t
match Rankins photo. But the positioning is very close to the original also the
hand placement is similar to the picture.
If I had time I would do this one
again, using better lighting and
makeup also maybe wet her hair like
the original image.
33. Ziqian Liu
I quite like this image, because
again, it looks similar to the
original photograph but it is
quite different.
Id prefer the oranges to be in
focus too, but they're not so if
I did this shoot again I would
try to get the whole thing in
focus.
I didn’t use the studio for this
shoot, I did it at home and just
used the flash on my camera.
It was hard to keep the
oranges up but we got a few
good shots.
34. Ziqian Liu
I experimented a lot with this picture, working out how too do a
photo similar to the image. A lot of my images, I didn’t like, and came
out not being very similar to the original photo.
I'm not too sure on this image
either, as it doesn’t really look like
the same aesthetic as ziqians work.
But I tried to add similar aspects,
such as the flower and the circle
mirror.
35. Ziqian Liu
For this shoot, I found it hard to get the right setting on my camera. Because when I
had the flash on, it didn’t show the eye in the mirror only the flash. With this
picture you cant see the eye in the mirror very well, but it is the best out of all of
them.
This was also done at home, I think it fits her
aesthetic but it would be better if the eye was
clearer.
36. Miles aldridge
I chose miles Aldridge because I liked the
look of his work a lot. But I didn’t think
about how hard it would be to re create.
This image doesn’t really look like the
photo, but you can see the parts that I
have used and based off from the photo.
I like this image because, although it
doesn’t look exactly the same it still looks
similar, and I like the colour of the
background and the position of her
head/face.
37. Miles aldridge
This image is one of my
favourites, because it looks a lot
like the actual photograph. You
can kind of tell that she is using
her own hands but I think that
makes it look better and suits
the style of photograph a lot
more.
I used the studio for this shoot
and makeup to make it look
more like the image.
38. Miles aldridge I like these images, because although they're not as
detailed as miles’s work I think they give off the same
vibe as his this picture and his other photographs.
If I did this again, I
would try and learn
how to edit roses
into the picture.
This shoot was taken
in the studio and I
think the lighting is
quite good, but the
original image is a bit
brighter, so I would
change the settings a
little if I were to do it
again.
39. Portraits of life
After WWII and the subsequent redevelopment in the
early 1970s, the streets of Norwich looked very different.
Jack Roberts, captured some of those communities. I
think this exhibition is good because it shows off his work
after his death. And shows what Norwich was like to the
younger people after the war. Also the way its laid out is
good, because you can see it as soon as you walk in, so it
would catch peoples eye.
40. Review
I enjoyed this induction task as we were basing our photos on different photographers. Which means we got
too work with new and different aesthetics and styles of photography. This was good, because it makes us get
out of our comfort zones and try something new. I chose the three photographers - Ziqian Liu, Rankin and Miles
Aldridge. They all have very different styles which I liked so I decided too try and base my work off of theirs.
I found a lot of them quite hard to do as lots of them have very professional lighting and props; I am happy with some
images but not all and would like to re do some of them. Ziquian liu’s work looked quite simple to make but it takes a lot of
time finding the right angles and lighting. My work based off of Rankin was probably my least favourite, as the lighting was
completely off and it looks unprofessional. My work based off of miles aldridge was probably my favourite because,
although his work looks really professional and hard to do, I feel like I have matched his style and aesthetic rather well.
A lot of my images look quite different to the actual picture I based it off, but you can see a lot of the little details and
aspects of the original photographs. The studio was where a lot of the images were taken, as a lot of the artists and photos
had professional lighting and props. But some were taken at home, like ziquian lius, because her work gives off that kind of
aesthetic and her lighting isn’t as harsh.
Overall, I enjoyed this project but I should have started it a bit sooner as I had to rush a bit and I would rather have extra
time to re do some shoots if I don’t like them.
41. Shoot 1
This is my first shoot, I
experimented with the
different colour sheets and
put them in different
positions. I don’t like this
shoot as its not as unique as
I wanted it to be. Also the
lighting isn’t very good, it is
something I need to work
on.
44. Shoot 2
These are the final edits from
shoot two. I like this shoot
because the lighting is a lot
better than the other shoot,
also I got a lot more, better
images.
I have edited them, to look
similar to the buffalo zine
magazines, and have taken
one of their logos to use on
the images.
46. Shoot 3
I liked this shoot because
many of the images came
out well and the lighting was
also very good, compared to
my first shoot.
I like the one especially on
the left, because I edited the
name logo to be the same
colour as the door. I think
this makes the image look
better, as it matches.
49. Shoot 4
editorial
This was my last shoot, and I
think it was one of the best.
Because the lighting is very
good and makes the images
look a lot better. Also the
poses and location makes
the fit my ‘theme’ better, as
they are quite aesthetic.
The image on the right is an
editorial, I don’t like the
with box very much, but the
writing wouldn’t show up
very well if it wasn’t there.
But overall I think the image
looks good.
60. Buffalo zine/earth magazine
This is the magazine that I am going to be
using as my inspiration, and name. I like
it because it is quite unique and goes
with the style I'm going for.
78. Personal statement
I am applying for this course because I have a passion for photography and would like to
pursue it when I am older. Also, I enjoy using my imagination to think of ideas and bringing
them to life with my photography. I find this subject interesting because I enjoy
capturing new and unique moments , although some images don’t turn out how you
want, you still get lots of good ones. I think I am suitable for this course because I am very
passionate about this subject and have done two years of photography in college. Also I
would like to expand in my photography and editing skills, and by carrying on with
photography I feel that I could achieve this. Throughout the first year of college, we went
through a variety of different photography topics: street, organic, architecture, portraiture,
and in the dark room. I liked working in the darkroom a lot, because I learned a new skill and
it was fun to develop and take the images. I can work my different camera settings, the studio
lights and work on photoshop, and I also have a creative mind and like to capture new things
on camera. I would like to go on this course because I would like to expand my understanding
on photography and improve my editing skills.

81. Final evaluation
Evaluation
Our first project for second year was, location, location, location. As it is different this time, due to corona I had to make sure
that we all kept safe and social distanced and cleansed everything that I used that was not mine. For this project I have
experimented a lot more with my editing on photoshop, and used different models to who I would’ve used normally.
At the start of this project we started off with artists research and subject research, and then picked the subject we wanted to
do the most. I chose fashion, as the images and artists I researched were the more exciting of them all. I then looked for some
magazines to base my work off of, and found buffalo zine/earth. I thought it was quite unique compared to most of the other
magazines I have searched before. In total, I did four shoots, the first one I did was in the studio but I didn’t like it because, the
lighting wasn’t very good and they just weren’t as unique as I wanted. my other three shoots I do like though, because the
lighting was very much improved to my first one and they were much more the style I was going for.
I used the buffalo zine/earth logo on my front covers and editorials and positioned and edited them as to how I think they
would go with the pictures and the uniqueness of the style of my shoots. Overall, I am quite happy with this project, although
at first I found it hard to think of good ideas and magazines to get inspired by; in the end I found a good magazine and did a
few good shoots which go with the vibe of magazine I wanted. if I did this project again, I would probably do a lot more shoots
and experiment with more different locations.
