What Exactly Is A Smart City? Features, Choice, & More
The Smart City Mission was introduced by the Indian government in 2015. In 100
cities around the nation, the goal was to boost economic growth and infrastructure.
The goal also aspires to build replicas of these cities that can serve as an example for
other communities around the nation to emulate in order to become "Smart" cities.
The Smart City mission aids society in overcoming environmental and
socioeconomic problems in metropolitan areas.
Are you searching for new projects in kandivali?
The first list of 20 cities was released in 2016, and it was intended to finish
developing these 20 cities by 2022. These 20 cities included the NDMC area in New
Delhi as well as Ahmedabad, Bhubaneswar, Pune, Kochi, Coimbatore, Jabalpur,
Jaipur, Surat, Guwahati, Indore, Chennai, Visakhapatnam, Bhopal, Udaipur,
Ludhiana, Kakinada, Belgaum, Solapur, and Bhuvanagiri. Further cities were added

Recent News: Smart Cities
Priorities for G20 Projects in Smart Cities
May 2023: The Srinagar Smart City project is moving forward quickly. The goal is to
promote various industries across cities in order to create contemporary
infrastructure that would revitalize the city. There are several projects in the works,
and Lieutenant Governor Shri Manoj Sinha recently inaugurated three of the
finished ones. Additionally, the Srinagar Municipal Corporation Commissioner said
that initiatives that are related to the G20 meeting set for May 22 get priority
attention and are practically finished. Since the beginning of 2023, the
administration has been working on a significant renovation of the city.
The Polo View market, which is currently accessible to the public, is one of the new
initiatives. Before the G20, a section of MA Road has been finished, and the riverside
development will be officially opened in the following four to five days. Various
stretches of the Gupkar junction are finished. The Srinagar district spans 294 square
km. There were about 120 projects that Srinagar undertook in all, and 70 of those
will be finished soon.
The government extends the deadline for the Smart Cities Mission to
June 2024
May 2023: The Union Housing & Urban Affairs Ministry will extend the deadline for
the smart city mission to take into account requests from various communities to
finish their ongoing initiatives. The previous deadline was until June 2023; the
extension will last until June 2024. Cities across the country are working on a
number of projects that will eventually be finished and need to be taken into
account as they continue to grow. The officials remarked that it is not a practical
option to issue extensions just to specific cities. Thus, everyone receives a
prolongation.
The expansion also emphasizes institutionalizing, documenting, and disseminating
the many templates, innovations, and practices in order to duplicate them across
states & establish the growth trajectory. A year after the cities were chosen, in June
2015, the smart city project was officially launched.
By next month, the first round of smart cities should be complete.
February 2023: The first batch of 22, which includes Varanasi, Ahmedabad, Pune,
Agra, and Chennai. These cities want to complete all outstanding work in order to be
ready by next month. These cities will offer a higher standard of living and a more
sustainable environment as part of the smart city concept. The remaining cities'
projects will probably be finished in three to four months. All of the projects will be
finished in several cities, including Bhubaneshwar, Coimbatore, Ranchi, Indore, and
Surat. Support of Rs 48,000 crores over the following three years, in accordance
with the smart city principles. There are 100 cities in the list as a whole.
The smart city mission seeks to support urban areas that offer citizens access to
essential infrastructure. It also aspires to provide a high standard of living in a
healthy and sustainable environment.
What accomplish smart cities?
Technology is used by smart cities to offer services to its residents. In order to
collect data, a variety of technological tools and sensors are used. The insights
gained from the data obtained aid in operationally improving waste disposal, utility
delivery, traffic flow, environmental management, and social service management.
The city officials can monitor the city in real-time and communicate easily with the
population thanks to the usage of information & communication technology.
Characteristics of Smart Cities
A smart healthcare system, smart governance, smart transit system, improved
security surveillance, smart infrastructure, better job possibilities, and all other
facilities and amenities that make life comfortable are just a few of the aspects that
make up smart cities.
If a city possesses the following characteristics, it can be categorized as a smart city:
 Needs of the society in terms of infrastructure, housing, education, health
care, and other areas.
 Improved key services are delivered to the community in a reliable and
effective manner.
 Boost society's economic growth.
 Effective resource management to prevent depletion.
 Increase the number of available jobs.
 A carefully thought-out strategy for data analysis & community participation
in large-scale
 enhancing the regional economy.
 Urbanization that is well-managed and coping mechanisms for population
growth & climate change.
 Smart technology application for community needs
 The improved transit networks.
These characteristics set smart cities apart from ordinary cities. Smart cities are
created to serve as models for other towns looking to upgrade their infrastructure
and spur urban economic growth.
Internet of Things, public safety, intelligent mobility, rising tourism, social
infrastructure, & physical infrastructure all make it easier for towns to transition
into "smart cities."
The four pillars serve as a summary of the key takeaways from the roadmap of the
world's leading smart cities. These pillars consist of:
 A strong network of devices and apps that is part of an IoT enabled
infrastructure.
 Effective mobility for smart cities is made possible by intelligent transport
networks, shared mobility services, and other factors.
 Efficiency & data privacy are balanced by cyber resilience.
 Involving the public in smart city projects.
These pillars form the basis of smart cities. Cities can become smart cities by
integrating these facilities into the smart cities’ initiative.
How to transform a regular city into a Smart City
After gathering information about the city, establish the measurements to turn it
into a smart city. Following that, the local government starts a few clever projects
and, if they are successful, scales them up to higher levels. Reviewing community
experiences enables advancement in the necessary areas.
The steps to transform a typical city into a smart city include:
Step-1: Gather information about the city's most important improvement areas.
Step 2: Determine the measurements for the desired outcome as well as the budget
and time constraints.
Step 3: Start with one or two modest projects and finish them within a specific
amount of time. While the project is being completed, the city's current standard
operating infrastructure & IT practices may change or be amended.
Step-4: Scale all the city's procedures.
Step 5: Evaluate the experience and get to work on future initiatives to transform a
typical city into a smart one.
The authorities can turn ordinary towns into smart cities for better living by using a
step-by-step strategy.
What steps are involved in choosing a smart city?
The transformation of cities into smart cities is a massive undertaking with many
difficulties. The Government of India has established a process to streamline the
selection of smart towns in order to simplify the process.
The following steps are taken to shortlist the smart city:
Step 1: The first step was sending a letter and a questionnaire with a thorough set
of questions to the states asking them to propose cities for the smart city
designation.
Step 2: By selecting the scoring parameters, you may view the list of questions.
Step 3: The smart city list is narrowed down based on the responses from the states
and UTs and the scores that each city obtained.
Step 4: Potential smart cities are announced after a decision has been reached. Now,
each smart city is given a consultant and a partner organisation that can help them
navigate the various guidelines established for the smart city competition.
By visiting the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs website @mohua.gov.in, you
may understand the specific details and stages of the smart cities.
India's 12 Smart Cities
Some of India's smart cities include Bhubaneshwar, Amritsar, Pune, Kochi,
Jaipur, New Delhi, Ahmedabad, Coimbatore, Indore, & Hyderabad. These cities are
well-equipped with facilities that make life more comfortable, like waste
management, efficient water supply, well-developed health care facilities, and
educational institutions.
The list of 12 smart cities in India, along with a description of each, is as follows:
Bhubaneshwar: The state of Odisha's capital is Bhubaneshwar. It is listed as a
Smart City in the "Social" category. The school system in socially astute
Bhubaneshwar is well run. A single city portal is very effective at administering the
city and solving problems in the neighbourhood. For managing traffic, there is a
functional traffic control centre and adaptive traffic light system. The local children's
Sensory Park & Splash Park are now open for business. Bhubaneswar Town Centre
District is the area-based development that spans 985 acres.
Pune: Thanks to advancements in the IT industry, improved connectivity, and
accessible public transport, Pune is quickly rising to the top of the list of desirable
cities for both residential & commercial use. In and around Baner, Pune, there are
more than 500 IT and non-IT businesses. Popular neighbourhoods in the city
include Dhayari-Narhe-Ambegaon BK, Wakad, Hadapsar, Pimple Saudagar, Dhanori-
Lohegaon & Wagholi. The retail spaces and apartment developments cater to
homebuyers with a middle-class and modest income. The future Metro train in Pune
as well as buses from Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML)
are planned as part of the city's smart city initiative.
Amritsar: The development of Amritsar, Jalandhar, & Patiala is part of the Amritsar
Smart City Project. A Smart Parking System, Traffic Management System, CCTV
Surveillance System, Waste Management System, Solar PV Systems, Free Public Wi-
Fi, and other systems are all integrated into the project in the tri-city. The Amritsar
smart city project includes the building of multi-level parking, a solar power plant,
renovated parks and open areas, and a command and control centre for city
surveillance.
Jaipur: The capital of the Indian state of Rajasthan is Jaipur, also known as "The
Pink City." India, a country renowned for its extensive history and cultural legacy,
counts it among its top tourist sites. The modern and inclusive solutions improve
the quality of life in Jaipur. A 600-acre walled city area is being revitalized and
repurposed to boost regional economic growth. The city's most recent
developments include waste water recycling for select public buildings and
monuments, intelligent IPT (auto and taxi) stands, digital displays and information
kiosks at heritage gates, multimodal integration at two UG Metro stations,
automated online water quality monitoring system for the distribution network, and
more.
Dehradun: The city's infrastructure, water and energy supplies, transport options,
and a host of other conveniences that make life easier and more comfortable will all
be improved as part of the Dehradun Smart City initiative. The delivery of public
services has improved as a result of this project. The purchase of electric buses is
part of the rehabilitation plan for convenient mobility. Under the project, numerous
smart schools are also constructed. Tourists can now pay taxes easily and
conveniently online thanks to the introduction of the city e-pass.
Kochi: In Kerala, Kochi is a special economic zone (for the IT industry). The Kochi
smart city initiative attempts to revitalize the city's ecology. The Kochi smart city
project involves solid waste management, canal restoration, better housing, the
construction of health care facilities, a water supply system, and other things. Safety
and security have increased as a result of the installation of the integrated traffic
management system & command, control, and communication centre. Water is
always available throughout the city.
New Delhi: It serves as the nation's capital. Within 5 miles of the city core, there are
numerous schools, colleges, hospitals, recreational clubs, and offices. Better
connectivity between different parts of the city is provided through roads and metro
train. Along with the government agencies, a large number of private IT and non-IT
businesses also provide employment opportunities. Living in the city is made
comfortable by the well-developed infrastructure. New Delhi's improved
sanitization, energy distribution, and water delivery system have raised the value of
living there. The Smart city welfare society exists to meet a city's needs for
smartness.
Ahmedabad: Ahmedabad is one of the greatest tourist attractions in India because
of its fascinating culture, tradition, and architecture. In addition, it has a good PPP
infrastructure and possibilities for inexpensive housing. To improve the city, the
local government has started a number of smart city projects. Transit management,
an e-governance system, integrated command & control centres, digital utility
payments, municipal surveillance, and other initiatives have been started by
Ahmedabad Development Limited. The maintenance of cleanliness in the city has
also benefited from effective sanitization & waste management systems.
Indore: Indore has received the designation of "Smart City" in a number of
categories. Municipal Waste Management System, built environment (Chappan
Dukan), and cultural preservation are a few areas where Indore has excelled in the
race to become a smart city. The Carbon Credit Financing Mechanism has also
received the Innovative Idea Award. In the city's master plan, multilane roadways
totaling over 600 km are proposed. The current built-up portion of the city is
modernized to make it functional and livable. Road mishaps have decreased as a
result of improved intersection design and road construction. In Indore, waste
generators have been installed for proper trash disposal. This city is smart and
livable because to its smart classrooms, 51 public health facilities, and several
private hospitals.
Coimbatore: The sixth smartest city in the nation is Coimbatore. This city is the
ideal place to live thanks to its amenities. The energy city of India is another name
for this place. As a result, energy resources are managed sustainably. The project for
this city's "smart cities" falls under broad headings such "water restoration and
conservation," "energy conservation," "water supply," "solid waste management,"
"model roads," "smart surveillance," and "social and infrastructure development."
Coimbatore is one of the best cities for residential and business purposes thanks to
its open parks, intelligent traffic systems, effective CCTV monitoring, solar
technology sensors, and many other amenities.
Dholera: Dholera is a wisely built, environmentally friendly metropolis that serves
as an example for other cities around the nation. Two phases of town planning
totaling more than 150 sq km are completed. Ahmedabad & Dholera Smart City may
be reached more easily thanks to a motorway that is 250 metres wide. Dholera is
technologically enhanced for a better living experience thanks to the sports zone,
city centre, international airport, high access corridor, and more.
Hyderabad: In recent years, Hyderabad has emerged as one of the nation's IT
centres. It was regarded as the country's second smartest city. It serves as
Telangana's state capital. Hyderabad has gained popularity in recent years due to
the affordable land available there. Jobs, education, hospitality, medical facilities, &
other industries have all developed quickly. These factors combine to make
Hyderabad the ideal city for comfortable living.
Conclusion: Smart Cities in India
In order to improve living conditions and give society more than just the bare
minimum of services, smart cities are expanding on a larger scale. With the
introduction of the idea of "smart cities," infrastructure has been upgraded, and
technology has been integrated into waste management, manufacturing, efficient
transportation, & better connection. To become smart cities, many Indian cities are
now enacting new regulations and working on smart city projects.

What exactly is a Smart City- Features, Choice, & More.pdf

  • 1. What Exactly Is A Smart City? Features, Choice, & More The Smart City Mission was introduced by the Indian government in 2015. In 100 cities around the nation, the goal was to boost economic growth and infrastructure. The goal also aspires to build replicas of these cities that can serve as an example for other communities around the nation to emulate in order to become "Smart" cities. The Smart City mission aids society in overcoming environmental and socioeconomic problems in metropolitan areas. Are you searching for new projects in kandivali? The first list of 20 cities was released in 2016, and it was intended to finish developing these 20 cities by 2022. These 20 cities included the NDMC area in New Delhi as well as Ahmedabad, Bhubaneswar, Pune, Kochi, Coimbatore, Jabalpur, Jaipur, Surat, Guwahati, Indore, Chennai, Visakhapatnam, Bhopal, Udaipur, Ludhiana, Kakinada, Belgaum, Solapur, and Bhuvanagiri. Further cities were added in the future rounds. The government has since amended the list to include 110 cities; you can view the full list of 110 Smart Cities here.
  • 2. Recent News: Smart Cities Priorities for G20 Projects in Smart Cities May 2023: The Srinagar Smart City project is moving forward quickly. The goal is to promote various industries across cities in order to create contemporary infrastructure that would revitalize the city. There are several projects in the works, and Lieutenant Governor Shri Manoj Sinha recently inaugurated three of the finished ones. Additionally, the Srinagar Municipal Corporation Commissioner said that initiatives that are related to the G20 meeting set for May 22 get priority attention and are practically finished. Since the beginning of 2023, the administration has been working on a significant renovation of the city. The Polo View market, which is currently accessible to the public, is one of the new initiatives. Before the G20, a section of MA Road has been finished, and the riverside development will be officially opened in the following four to five days. Various stretches of the Gupkar junction are finished. The Srinagar district spans 294 square km. There were about 120 projects that Srinagar undertook in all, and 70 of those will be finished soon. The government extends the deadline for the Smart Cities Mission to June 2024 May 2023: The Union Housing & Urban Affairs Ministry will extend the deadline for the smart city mission to take into account requests from various communities to finish their ongoing initiatives. The previous deadline was until June 2023; the extension will last until June 2024. Cities across the country are working on a number of projects that will eventually be finished and need to be taken into account as they continue to grow. The officials remarked that it is not a practical option to issue extensions just to specific cities. Thus, everyone receives a prolongation. The expansion also emphasizes institutionalizing, documenting, and disseminating the many templates, innovations, and practices in order to duplicate them across states & establish the growth trajectory. A year after the cities were chosen, in June 2015, the smart city project was officially launched.
  • 3. By next month, the first round of smart cities should be complete. February 2023: The first batch of 22, which includes Varanasi, Ahmedabad, Pune, Agra, and Chennai. These cities want to complete all outstanding work in order to be ready by next month. These cities will offer a higher standard of living and a more sustainable environment as part of the smart city concept. The remaining cities' projects will probably be finished in three to four months. All of the projects will be finished in several cities, including Bhubaneshwar, Coimbatore, Ranchi, Indore, and Surat. Support of Rs 48,000 crores over the following three years, in accordance with the smart city principles. There are 100 cities in the list as a whole. The smart city mission seeks to support urban areas that offer citizens access to essential infrastructure. It also aspires to provide a high standard of living in a healthy and sustainable environment. What accomplish smart cities? Technology is used by smart cities to offer services to its residents. In order to collect data, a variety of technological tools and sensors are used. The insights gained from the data obtained aid in operationally improving waste disposal, utility delivery, traffic flow, environmental management, and social service management. The city officials can monitor the city in real-time and communicate easily with the population thanks to the usage of information & communication technology. Characteristics of Smart Cities A smart healthcare system, smart governance, smart transit system, improved security surveillance, smart infrastructure, better job possibilities, and all other facilities and amenities that make life comfortable are just a few of the aspects that make up smart cities. If a city possesses the following characteristics, it can be categorized as a smart city:  Needs of the society in terms of infrastructure, housing, education, health care, and other areas.  Improved key services are delivered to the community in a reliable and effective manner.  Boost society's economic growth.  Effective resource management to prevent depletion.  Increase the number of available jobs.
  • 4.  A carefully thought-out strategy for data analysis & community participation in large-scale  enhancing the regional economy.  Urbanization that is well-managed and coping mechanisms for population growth & climate change.  Smart technology application for community needs  The improved transit networks. These characteristics set smart cities apart from ordinary cities. Smart cities are created to serve as models for other towns looking to upgrade their infrastructure and spur urban economic growth. Internet of Things, public safety, intelligent mobility, rising tourism, social infrastructure, & physical infrastructure all make it easier for towns to transition into "smart cities." The four pillars serve as a summary of the key takeaways from the roadmap of the world's leading smart cities. These pillars consist of:  A strong network of devices and apps that is part of an IoT enabled infrastructure.  Effective mobility for smart cities is made possible by intelligent transport networks, shared mobility services, and other factors.  Efficiency & data privacy are balanced by cyber resilience.  Involving the public in smart city projects. These pillars form the basis of smart cities. Cities can become smart cities by integrating these facilities into the smart cities’ initiative. How to transform a regular city into a Smart City After gathering information about the city, establish the measurements to turn it into a smart city. Following that, the local government starts a few clever projects and, if they are successful, scales them up to higher levels. Reviewing community experiences enables advancement in the necessary areas. The steps to transform a typical city into a smart city include: Step-1: Gather information about the city's most important improvement areas. Step 2: Determine the measurements for the desired outcome as well as the budget and time constraints.
  • 5. Step 3: Start with one or two modest projects and finish them within a specific amount of time. While the project is being completed, the city's current standard operating infrastructure & IT practices may change or be amended. Step-4: Scale all the city's procedures. Step 5: Evaluate the experience and get to work on future initiatives to transform a typical city into a smart one. The authorities can turn ordinary towns into smart cities for better living by using a step-by-step strategy. What steps are involved in choosing a smart city? The transformation of cities into smart cities is a massive undertaking with many difficulties. The Government of India has established a process to streamline the selection of smart towns in order to simplify the process. The following steps are taken to shortlist the smart city: Step 1: The first step was sending a letter and a questionnaire with a thorough set of questions to the states asking them to propose cities for the smart city designation. Step 2: By selecting the scoring parameters, you may view the list of questions. Step 3: The smart city list is narrowed down based on the responses from the states and UTs and the scores that each city obtained. Step 4: Potential smart cities are announced after a decision has been reached. Now, each smart city is given a consultant and a partner organisation that can help them navigate the various guidelines established for the smart city competition. By visiting the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs website @mohua.gov.in, you may understand the specific details and stages of the smart cities. India's 12 Smart Cities Some of India's smart cities include Bhubaneshwar, Amritsar, Pune, Kochi, Jaipur, New Delhi, Ahmedabad, Coimbatore, Indore, & Hyderabad.
