The environment in which this policy proposal is being generated is one characterized by several realities:
State budgets for managing necessary services are shrinking.
The political environment is somewhat unstable because of lack of consensus on how to address various types of social problems, including crime. Propertyrelated crime is on the rise, including collateral offenses against persons.
Court systems are so overwhelmed that there is growing public perception that public access to timely dispute resolution has become severely constrained. Correctional facilities are overcrowded, and problems of recidivism have accelerated.
Plea bargaining and outof court settlement of cases has increased in part as a way to sidestep lengthy and expensive court trials. Certain alternative dispute resolution programs have been operating successfully in many circumstances and jurisdictions.
You will produce a policy proposal from the perspective that you are a senior policy analyst employed by a state’s Administrative Office of the Courts. Scenario A: Local pro capital punishment newspaper reporting on the milestone of the 500th execution.
Context: Curiosity and Purpose
The purpose of this report is to explore the justifications for capital punishment as one of the ways used by the criminal justice system in punishing convicts and providing justice to the victims of capital offenses. There are two curiosities that we identified as very fundamental in exploring this report.
Curiosity #1: What is the level of deterrence on capital offenses?
We were curious to look at how capital punishment helps in the deterrence of capital offenses. The level of deterrence could be measured by using data on the history of the occurrence of capital offenses to date. This curiosity originated from the realization that there were few cases of capital offenses reported on the media platforms within Texas.
Curiosity 2: What is the safety of the society from capital offenders?
We were curious on exploring the level of safety in the society when members of the public understand that the criminals have been removed from the general public and they will not come back to the society again. The safety of the general public can be determined from the dimensions of business activities during late hours, outdoor activities and the number of people using active means of transport. An increase in these dimensions reveal an increase in the level of safety that is experienced by the general public as a result of the removal of capital offenders from the society.
Circumstances
People: in this report, the stakeholders include the newspaper which is an independent newspaper with independent views and the Texas Department of Criminal Justice which will help in providing vital data. The audience of this report includes the general public who would like to understand how capital offense deters others from committing crime and how it ensures the safety of the society.

Frequency: This report will be a one off piece of work that will be produced on this single occasion of reporting on the 500th execution milestone.

I recently had the opportunity to present at the Upswell conference, hosted by Independent Sector and targeted toward philanthropy, nonprofits, and other change makers. My session focused on identifying and managing power in social change work, drawing upon a combination of my research on power dynamics in cross-sector partnerships (I'm currently a Ph.D. candidate at Antioch University) and my experiences as a technical assistance provider and Associate Director at Arabella Advisors.
Power dynamics underlie broader discussions on critical topics like systems change, equity, and justice, but we typically prefer to talk about something other than power. Wajid khan explains It can feel awkward or unpleasant and reveal hard truths that may feel unsurmountable. However, research tells us that just discussing power can help empower us. (1) Whether we talk about it or not, it's there – and increasing our awareness of how it shows up can make us more effective social change makers.
Based on my Upswell presentation, this post identifies four ways power can show up in cross-sector and collaborative work and poses various related questions for consideration. (If you have ideas to contribute or questions, I hope you'll reach out using the link at the bottom of this page).
#1 – The Power in Resources
One of the most obvious ways power shows up is in resources. Of course, when discussing resources in philanthropic and nonprofit circles, the first type that comes to mind is often money and the influence and authority attached to it. However, a famous framework by French and Raven(2) names five power-related resource types.
Each of these can function as currency in social sector settings, and stakeholders should always examine what they have at their disposal. Legitimacy is a unique resource because we often let go without realizing it. Legitimacy is based on recognition. Who should have the right to influence the outcome? In addition to being clear about when and why you give up your legitimacy, you need to ask yourself when you can give up your legitimacy. Wajid khan Mp asks Should we have influence, or should we have the right to influence others? Can you do it?
#2 - Structural Forces
Structural forces manifest themselves in rules and regulations, grant agreements, policies, and the shaping of decision-making processes. Structural details also include broader decision-making structures within society (think government agencies, for example).
One of the most critical ways structural forces work on a small scale is in the meeting agenda-setting process, whether organized or collaborative.

To begin the study of victimology, it is important to understand what it is. In the simplest of terms, victimology is the study of victims or the victims of a certain type of offender, and this field emerged in the 1940s and 1950s (Wallace & Roberson, 2015). It focuses on the victim, the offender, and society with both a research and a scientific basis. The idea of what a victim truly is can sometimes be hard to define. Sometimes, being a victim is based on the law, involving injury, conduct, or fault. Primitive laws set the following guidelines: Acts that injured others were considered wrong. The injured party was entitled to take action against wrongdoer. In-kind retaliation was typically action taken. The Code of Hammurabi was one of the first attempts to establish some type of written code of conduct. This code actually had a concern for victims’ rights, which sometimes, even in present day law, are forgotten. It was not until the 1960s and 1970s that the U.S. Supreme Court established principles related to the constitutional rights of individuals that were both procedural and civil in nature (Wallace & Roberson, 2015). Understanding the criminal justice system is an important element in understanding victimology. Many people have been victimized or feel victimized once they become involved in the justice system. In early history, state courts took care of most cases; later on, the federal system began to have jurisdiction over crimes and civil matters, and therefore, our system is dual and consists of state and federal courts. Both parts of our court system are based on the principles of federalism and geography or type of case to distinguish the jurisdiction of the court. CONTEXTUAL THINKING ABOUT DIFFERENT SCENARIOS
Scenario A: Local pro capital punishment newspaper reporting on the milestone of the 500th execution.
Context: Curiosity and Purpose
The purpose of this report is to explore the justifications for capital punishment as one of the ways used by the criminal justice system in punishing convicts and providing justice to the victims of capital offenses. There are two curiosities that we identified as very fundamental in exploring this report.
Curiosity #1: What is the level of deterrence on capital offenses?
We were curious to look at how capital punishment helps in the deterrence of capital offenses. The level of deterrence could be measured by using data on the history of the occurrence of capital offenses to date. This curiosity originated from the realization that there were few cases of capital offenses reported on the media platforms within Texas.
Curiosity 2: What is the safety of the society from capital offenders?
We were curious on exploring the level of safety in the society when members of the public understand that the criminals have been removed from the general public and they will not come back to the society again. The safety of the general public can be determined from the dimensions of business activities during late hours, outdoor activities and the number of people using active means of transport. An increase in these dimensions reveal an increase in the level of safety that is experienced by the general public as a result of the removal of capital offenders from the society.
Circumstances
People: in this report, the stakeholders include the newspaper which is an independent newspaper with independent views and the Texas Department of Criminal Justice which will help in providing vital data. The audience of this report includes the general public who would like to understand how capital offense deters others from committing crime and how it ensures the safety of the society.
Consumption
Frequency: This report will be a one off piece of work that will be produced on this single occasion of reporting on the 500th execution milestone.
Deliverables
Format: The intention of the newspaper was to create a report that would work through print media.

In order to accomplish the purpose of the report, the news paper would be going for an explanatory experience to explain to the audience the justifications for capital punishment. This would be followed by an exhibitory experience where data would be displayed using bar charts and bubble charts to show the levels deterrence.

The visual work for this report can be depicted using bar graphs for the cases of capital offenses reported over the years. Bright colors like red and orange would be used for years when high cases were reported and this would indicate the level of danger or lack of safety in the society. Cool colors like blue and green would be used or the bars representing low c.

I recently had the opportunity to present at the Upswell conference, hosted by Independent Sector and targeted toward philanthropy, nonprofits, and other change makers. My session focused on identifying and managing power in social change work, drawing upon a combination of my research on power dynamics in cross-sector partnerships (I'm currently a Ph.D. candidate at Antioch University) and my experiences as a technical assistance provider and Associate Director at Arabella Advisors.
Power dynamics underlie broader discussions on critical topics like systems change, equity, and justice, but we typically prefer to talk about something other than power. Wajid khan explains It can feel awkward or unpleasant and reveal hard truths that may feel unsurmountable. However, research tells us that just discussing power can help empower us. (1) Whether we talk about it or not, it's there – and increasing our awareness of how it shows up can make us more effective social change makers.
Based on my Upswell presentation, this post identifies four ways power can show up in cross-sector and collaborative work and poses various related questions for consideration. (If you have ideas to contribute or questions, I hope you'll reach out using the link at the bottom of this page).
#1 – The Power in Resources
One of the most obvious ways power shows up is in resources. Of course, when discussing resources in philanthropic and nonprofit circles, the first type that comes to mind is often money and the influence and authority attached to it. However, a famous framework by French and Raven(2) names five power-related resource types.
Each of these can function as currency in social sector settings, and stakeholders should always examine what they have at their disposal. Legitimacy is a unique resource because we often let go without realizing it. Legitimacy is based on recognition. Who should have the right to influence the outcome? In addition to being clear about when and why you give up your legitimacy, you need to ask yourself when you can give up your legitimacy. Wajid khan Mp asks Should we have influence, or should we have the right to influence others? Can you do it?
#2 - Structural Forces
Structural forces manifest themselves in rules and regulations, grant agreements, policies, and the shaping of decision-making processes. Structural details also include broader decision-making structures within society (think government agencies, for example).
One of the most critical ways structural forces work on a small scale is in the meeting agenda-setting process, whether organized or collaborative.

Study Guide
To begin the study of victimology, it is important to understand what it is. In the simplest of terms, victimology is the study of victims or the victims of a certain type of offender, and this field emerged in the 1940s and 1950s (Wallace & Roberson, 2015). It focuses on the victim, the offender, and society with both a research and a scientific basis. The idea of what a victim truly is can sometimes be hard to define. Sometimes, being a victim is based on the law, involving injury, conduct, or fault. Primitive laws set the following guidelines: Acts that injured others were considered wrong. The injured party was entitled to take action against wrongdoer. In-kind retaliation was typically action taken. The Code of Hammurabi was one of the first attempts to establish some type of written code of conduct. This code actually had a concern for victims’ rights, which sometimes, even in present day law, are forgotten. It was not until the 1960s and 1970s that the U.S. Supreme Court established principles related to the constitutional rights of individuals that were both procedural and civil in nature (Wallace & Roberson, 2015). Understanding the criminal justice system is an important element in understanding victimology. Many people have been victimized or feel victimized once they become involved in the justice system. In early history, state courts took care of most cases; later on, the federal system began to have jurisdiction over crimes and civil matters, and therefore, our system is dual and consists of state and federal courts. Both parts of our court system are based on the principles of federalism and geography or type of case to distinguish the jurisdiction of the court. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to create a shareable educational
resource about a particular structural inequality. In it, you will 1) describe the structural
inequality and 2) recommend at least 1 specific action people can take to help disrupt,
dismantle, or otherwise work against that structure. There are 3 major components to this
project: the resource itself, a 2-3 page reflection piece, and a Works Cited. Instructions
for each can be found below.
In doing this assignment, you’ll get the chance to:
• Synthesize information and ideas you’ve come across in the
readings, conversations, and assignments.
• Reflect on how education can be a crucial component of being an
active, engaged member of your community and of society as a
whole.
• Produce a concrete resource that you can put out into the world
about your topic.
Educational Resource Instructions
For the resource itself, I’m giving you a fair amount of freedom. You have to create an
educational resource, but the exact form it takes is really up to you. Some options people
have done in the past:
• Write an editorial/article about your topic that could be submitted
to a newspaper or other periodical. (You don’t have to actually
submit it.)
• Create a brochure about your topic that can be printed and
distributed.
• Create a short zine about your topic that can be printed and
distributed.
• Produce a short podcast or video about your topic.
• Create a blog post (with links for more info) about your topic.
• Create a website about your topic.
• Create an educational board game or video game about your topic.
• Something else that you come up with (and get approved by me)
While you have a lot of freedom for the form of the project, there are certain criteria that
all projects must meet. To get full credit your resource must:
• Be targeted towards a particular audience (likely a particular
group of stakeholders for the issue)—Think about whom you want
to reach. Who is likely to care about the issue if they learned about
it? Who might be willing and able to take action?
o Your target audience should influence the form and
language of the project. For example, you probably
wouldn’t create a video game if your target audience is
Idaho congresspeople (or maybe you would?).
• Contain the following components
1. A short background on the situation. Explain what is going
on, how it’s unequal, and why we should care about it.
2. A description of the communities that are most impacted by
the issue and how they are impacted. This is related to the
previous component; one way to make people care about an
issue is to show them the harm it is causing to a particular
group of people.
3. A description of at least 1 important cultural story or belief
that helps sustain the conditions of inequality. As Schwalbe

Race and the Role of Government - Public Works

Ideas that are good for business and good for the world that we live in, are what I’m passionate about.
Some ideas take a year to make, some take 8 years. I want to share two projects that best illustrate this and why it is never good to stop at “no”.
