1. “Recitatif” by Toni Morrison.
Description Complete a written response in which you analyze the “Recitatif” by Toni
Morrison. You should answer the following questions in your response: In the story, there is
one African American character and one white character. But which character is which?
And, how did you arrive at your decision? What is your evidence? Be sure to consider
stereotypes and your own assumptions about race as you consider your response. As adults,
there is a change in the power relationship between the Twyla and Roberta. How are they
different? What does this tell us about their social class and their race? What social issues
(other than race and racism) does Morrison take on in the story? How do these other social
issues intertwine with the theme of race and racism? Content and Organization:You should
present your ideas in essay form that is appropriate to college-level writing (paragraphs,
transitions, an introduction and conclusion, etc.). Targeting your writing is crucial to your
success in this class. It’s important to understand and follow the assignment directions – I
am looking for a specific kind of analysis as described by each reading response assignment.

clear and complete argument. For reading response assignments, you MUST to include
specific examples (quotes) from the selections to support your analysis. Formal Tone: Do
not use first person (I, we) or second person (you) in papers for this class. This type of
paper (literary analysis) about the readings and should be written in third person only.
College-level papers should always be written in third person unless the
assignment/professor specifies otherwise. Research: DO NOT use outside research as
support for your ideas. I’m interested in your analysis of the readings ONLY. Format: Use
MLA style for this and ALL writing assignments in this class. Information on and help with
MLA style can be found at the following links: http://palmbeachstate.libguides.com/mla
