DISPARITIES AND CULTURAL COMPETENCE21. Explain in your own words what health
disparities and cultural competence mean.Health disparities can be defined as a higher
burden of mortality, disability, injury, orillness experienced by one community relative to
another. Disparities happen across numeroussettings, including sexual orientation. race, or
socioeconomic status (Barr, 2014). Culturalcompetence allows individuals to interact with,
communicate with, and effectively understandgroups from different cultures. For
healthcare professionals, cultural competence represents theorganizations and providers’
ability to provide services in healthcare that fulfill the patients’cultural, linguistic, and social
needs. To be considered as culturally competent, a healthcaresystem should have the ability
to improve the quality of care and wellbeing outcomes(Betancourt et. al, 2016). Such a
system can help to eliminate health disparities caused by raceand ethnicity.2. Minority
Group – HispanicsThe national government defines Latinos or Hispanics as individuals of
Central or SouthAmerican, Cuban, Puerto Rican, Mexican, or other Spanish origin or culture
regardless of race(Velasco-Mondragon, 2016).i.The major health issues faced by the
Hispanic community include obesity, diabetes, hypertension, alcoholism and substance
abuse, and tuberculosis.ii.The major leading causes of death or injury include heart disease,
cancer, accidents(unintentional injuries), homicide, stroke, HIV, and diabetes (Velasco-
Mondragon, 2016).iii.Health disparities among this minority group are impacted by societal,
social, behavioral, and sociodemographic factors such as cultural and language barriers,
limited access toHEALTH DISPARITIES AND CULTURAL COMPETENCEhealth services,
inequities in education, and structural discrimination (VelascoMondragon, 2016). For
example, Hispanics with less education are bound to exposethemselves to various health
risks such as substance abuse, obesity, and unintentionalinjury.iv.To prevent or improve the
significant health issues faced by the Hispanic community, secondary prevention strategies
will need to be implemented within the community. Forexample, routine screening for
forms of cancer, type 2 diabetes, congenital heartconditions, and tuberculosis should fall
inside the role of the community servicesenvironment.3HEALTH DISPARITIES AND
