6. The Role of Fisheries and Aquaculture in reducing
malnutrition in Egypt
• Significant proportion of the Egyptian population suffers from
various forms of malnutrition; stunting, wasting, underweight,
and obesity.
• Micronutrient deficiencies is a major challenge.
• Malnutrition most prevalent in rural areas especially in Upper
Egypt and frontier governorates due to unavailability of fish.

Conclusion
• Use of solar tent drying
improves quality of
small fish products for
promotion of nutrition
security.
• Changes in catch composition from
large cichlids to small pelagics mainly
Usipa (Engraulicypris sardella)
• poor handling and processing
methods of Usipa fish especially
during periods of peak catches.

• USAID AIN project promoted
micronutrient rich mola for better
nutrition outcome
• Process evaluation found that only mola
culture doesn’t ensure frequent mola
consumption.
• USAID AIN project innovated easy to use
mola gill net to increase mola
consumption via frequent harvesting
• Mola gill net was designed in way
that is convenient for women to use
• Mola gill net is suitable for using all
of the season of a year
• Study revealed the mola gill net
enhance women’s participation in
harvesting which led to significant
positive impact on the frequency

KEY MESSAGES
The intervention study showed
that Numtrey can stop progress
of wasting while prevention of
stunting will need more
integrated solutions.
NumTrey is a successful proof-
of-concept of an energy-dense
fish-based locally produced
ready-to-use supplementary
food (RUSF).
The production concept of
wrapping a fish-paste in crispy
wafer is highly accepted and
meets Cambodian preferences
for snack foods.
• 484 children aged 6-18 months were included and 292 children
completed the study
• 27 clusters were randomized to NumTrey with fish or . Corn-
Soya-Blend (CSB++), multiple micronutrient powder (sprinkles)
or control (no food)
• The children consumed on average 24g NumTrey per day that
could help prevent children from becoming wasted
• There was too little iron in the product to prevent iron deficiency

Solomon Islands located in the Western Pacific is a subsistence based society with coastal fisheries and gardening forming the backbone of the rural economy. Solomon Islands like many Pacific nations face the challenge of the double-burden of malnutrition, with overweight and obese adults, stunted children and micronutrient deficiencies in women and children. In this study we used a mixed method approach to identify nutrition issues and their drivers. Results show that while household are food secure, women and children’s diet quality is extremely poor – for example only 6% achieved minimum dietary diversity . Participatory research with communities identified diverse drivers and offer entry points for intervention that span across the agri-fish food system.
