Show Me the $$$
Born and raised in New York City, I’m a fashion stylist, a writer, a creative consultant behind the launch of many well-known brands, an activist with a strong passion for women's rights. Without a doubt, a Jane-of-a-trades.
My typical day can run the gamut from waking up early to shoot an on-air segment comment on the former First Lady the impact of style and working with her and the White House, to a fitting for a client, to a coffee for a new jewelry company that I'm on the board of to catching a plane to the destination to write about the food and culture there. All the while texting with MA about the next G4G initiative.
How I got my start (flash to next slide)
Maya Angelou said, "Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry, but my demonstrating that all peoples cry, laugh, eat, worry and die, it can introduce the idea that if we try and understand each other, we may even become friends." Starting 'N A Perfect World, my intent was to combine all of my interests in advocating this philosophy, not solely as just another millennial that's a cultural voyeur and taking a selfie in a cool place.
The basic idea for 'N A Perfect World... a curated intersection of travel, fashion, food and geopolitics inspired by the global citizen lifestyle of the millennial.
NAPerfectWorld.com 's end goal is to be the voice of the next generation of global citizens. I want more Americans to have passports and to encourage cultural exchanges that will lead to less insular thinking or misunderstandings. I think it's important to put a brown girl's POV on this. And it's pretty wonderful when I can use my otherness to gain access into communities, that frankly are skeptical of the average American tourist.
I’d watch Samantha Brown as a teen and I knew, that’s what I want to do, took a winding way to get there, still getting there but on my way.
My journey to you

I want more Americans (that can afford it) to have passports and to encourage cultural exchanges that will lead to less insular thinking and misunderstandings. It’s important to put a brown girl’s point of view on this. And it’s pretty wonderful when I can use my otherness to gain access into communities, that frankly are skeptical of the average American tourist.
’N A Perfect World…
this wouldn’t be a thing
but let’s get realistic.
Here are some of the biggest things that we should be considering when travelling as American women today. I’m going to chat about these things and at the same time give you tools I’ve found helpful in navigating them.
and then we’re going to bring it full circle, reiterate tools for navigating this experience, and, to go back to that Maya Angelou quote, remember why we travel and our mission our goal.
Ask to the audience: What are some things we enjoy? Freedoms? Compared to certain cultures? Glass ceilings still to be broken, but we have made a great deal of progress right?
How do we see ourselves?

Many countries until recent decades haven’t experienced the different waves of immigration like we have so for the most part they have a sense of being homogenous. America’s different. The immigrants that are the fabric of this country and the waves of immigration are something we celebrate.
Southern accents? We’re all cowboys or cowgirls
assumption of ignorance, don’t speak the language, certain cultures prioritize travel, ours isn’t one of them.
party girls
- Best example of the American party girl in a foreign place that turns dangerous, Amanda Knox.
Navigating as a black American woman from New York. Here’s what that means for me based on perception.
Personal story.
——- So now that we have an overview of how we’re perceived as American women, let’s talk about how it affects us traveling.
We’ve just discussed how we’re perceived as American woman, sexually open and available. And unfortunately this is something we have to think about when we’re traveling.
Lara Logan sexual assault by mob in Tahrir Square in Cairo following Hosni Mubarak's resignation. A group of female protesters ultimately closed ranks around Logan, holding back the mob until soldiers could carry her to safety. She spent four days recovering in a hospital before returning to the U.S.
How many of you have been to a mosque, or a synagogue, place of worship where men and women had to pray separately?
What about socially? (Istanbul story)
—-> not wanting to judge
Sexual Assault in the Amazon case, many of these young women shouldn’t be alone w/ a male shaman, the woman in their communities wouldn’t. In an effort to not appear as judgmental, racist, or view another culture through paternalistic lens, these women are putting themselves in harms way.
I pulled this story because we’ve all heard about the civil / human rights atrocities committed against the LGBTQ in countries like Jamaica or the Ukraine, 75 countries in the world criminalize homosexuality but it’s all too easy to turn a blind eye and say, “Gay marriage is legal here, it’s different here.” This story happened in Hawaii at the Foodlands supermarket, not in a rural area, not the deep South. Two American women, assaulted by an American police officer in Hawaii
keep being ourselves
change the negative narrative - own your space. Every trip we take inspires the next person
"Sexual violence is a way of denying women journalists access to the story in Egypt," Logan told the New York Daily News after her assault. "It's not accidental. It's by design.”
Educate yourself: from local customs of the area to safety ratings to where your local embassy and emergency response numbers
Social setting recognizance: before you think about your first drink or putting yourself in any kind of debilitating situation, do you know the lay of the land? roads? residential areas?
How we move in a space is different from that of a male traveler, accept this and make the adjustments.
Our country is a pop culture country; very few times in our nation’s history have politics been so popular and salacious as they are now. There are some countries, France, Israel, where it’s always on the table, throughout different ages and demographics, this is only recently true here. Expect to be question, poked, prodded. (Story about 9/11 in Milan)
North Korea, Venezuela, Iran, Cuba, Russia, Angola; Now with the travel ban? Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen?
There are some countries that have a great exchange like Australia and the UK, US and Australia and UK, Why do you think that is?
Since 2007 the United States has allowed post-secondary students or recent graduates who are New Zealand or Australian citizens to work and travel in the United States for up to twelve months. New Zealand and Australia are the only two countries in the world with this arrangement. The aim of the program is to offer young Kiwis the chance to experience the United States not just as a holiday destination, but as a potential place to study, as well as to improve cultural ties.
And finally, there have always been travel politics at play but here’s the most glaringly obvious one now. Our new president
