These scenarios were discussed by groups in this workshop demonstrating that they have a lot of knowledge of the tools and approaches to CPD for library and information professionals.

1. Julie is mid way through her MA
Information Studies course and has
decided she might like to get a job as an
academic librarian when she finishes,
but has no experience in that setting.
What CPD could Julie pursue to help her
on her way to getting a job as an
academic librarian?

2. Matt is stuck in a rut. He's a qualified and
chartered librarian with 10 years
experience in the health sector. He wants
to stay in health but move into a
management role, but lacks staff
management experience.
What CPD could Matt do to address this
and help him move into management?

3. Clara is working part-time as a library
assistant in a public library. She has 3 young
children which keep her busy outside of
work.
Now the youngest child is at school Clara is
starting to think about going back to work
full time and pursuing a career in public
libraries.
What CPD could Clara pursue to realise this?

4. Adam has been made redundant from his
role as Team Leader in a public library.
He wants to make sure he stays involved
in LIS activities while he finds a new job.
What CPD could he do to demonstrate his
continuing commitment to the
profession to potential employers?

5. Bob is disappointed. His employer won't
fund him to go to a conference as the
staff development budget has been cut.
Bob is convinced the conference would
not only be great CPD for him, but
beneficial for the service.
What other options could Bob explore that
could be a route to the conference?

6. Maggie loves her job as a solo school
librarian, but this means it's rare that she
can attend conferences, meetings with
other school librarians. She's worried she's
missing out on good ideas and sharing
good practice.
How can Maggie keep up to date with and
contribute to developments in her sector?
