Discussion Forum The Civil War legally ended slavery and brought in the Era of Reconstruction. Reconstruction is an example of the notion that it was easier to change political institutions than cultural assumptions related to slavery. Discuss how Reconstruction reflects the nation’s attempt to promote justice and healing. The History of Reconstruction Background: Many Americans like to imagine the history of their nation as one of continual progress. While acknowledging that not all persons and groups enjoyed equal rights at all times, Americans often take it for granted that American history moves in only one direction: toward greater rights, greater freedom, and greater equality. This perspective makes it difficult for many Americans to understand the Reconstruction period and to place it in a broader historical narrative. The problem they face is that African Americans from roughly 1867 to 1875 enjoyed far more political influence and equal rights than they ever had before, or ever would again until the end of the modern Civil Rights Movement almost a century later. The fact that a group could be stripped of rights it once enjoyed is difficult for many Americans to accept, and so they often retreat into a false narrative, in which African Americans never gained any rights at all, and were abandoned to their fate as soon as slavery ended. In this model, the infamous Black Codes—which were in effect for less than a year—take center stage, and the various gains of Reconstruction get ignored. Research Paper Assignment Sheet For your third paper assignment, you will use a primary source in an introductory paragraph to introduce your topic and develop a thesis. Then, you will support and develop your thesis claim by using outside research (secondary sources) to expand, illustrate, and/or supplement that claim. Like the other two papers that you've written this semester, your research essay must be an academic paper that provides an analysis of texts and develops an argument regarding an assigned topic. You are not writing an informative report but must instead develop an argument to support your thesis. This means that whatever topic you pick should be discussed using terminology from the readings and class discussions, should be critically examined (meaning its construction, labels, and groups should be discussed and critiqued), and should be placed in a larger context based on what we’ve read and the material we’ve discussed. Format: The paper must be typed in Times New Roman font, size 12, double-spaced. Points will be deducted for not following these specifications. Do not use color, include images, or provide a cover page. List your name, the course name, and the term at the top of the page, then write your title, then begin the paper. Papers must be at least 6 pages (not including the reference page). Points will be deducted if papers less than 6 and exceed 9 pages.
