4. What Is A Timed Auction?
Timed auctions don’t have an auctioneer calling the bids – there’s just a bidding time frame and whoever bids highest during
the time frame wins. Each lot can be bid on for a defined time period. At the end of this period, the bidder who has submitted
the highest bid wins the lot, provided the bid exceeds the reserve price.
You tell us the most you’re willing to pay – and we’ll bid intelligently for you, only bidding enough for you to meet the reserve or
stay in the lead. Don’t worry, your max bid is not disclosed, and is held in confidence on our bidding system.
If someone bids higher than your ‘maximum’, we will send you an 'outbid alert' via email to let you know, so you can decide
whether to bid more.
You'll know it's a timed auction as the end time will be displaced on the lot page. If a bid is placed in the last 5 minutes of the
defined time period, the time period will be extended by 5 minutes. This prevents 'sniping', where a bidder times a bid as the lot
closes, denying others the chance to counter.
Go here to bid : http://www.bid.whytes.ie
More details:
Before the auction starts you can leave bids – your top bid is not revealed, and your bid will start at one step above the
previous bid or at the start price if no other bid. You will be notified by email if you get outbid before the auction starts. Once
the auction starts - on 6 July at 6pm -email notifications cease and you should follow the auction on-line to see how your
bids are doing.
When the auction starts: The bidding for each lot is opened for 5 minutes at a start price determined by the reserve or bids
already received. Each lot will be open and remain open for bidding until its end time is reached; the end time will be extended
by 5 minutes if another bid is received.
During this period of open bidding you will be able to see the current highest bid on each lot. You may place a higher bid at the
defined bidding increment you choose. Bidders are automatically informed by email if they are the winning bidder, or if they
have been outbid by another competing bidder.
At the end time, if there are no further bids and the highest bid offered equals or exceeds the reserve price the lot is sold.
How to bid:
• Log in or register at www.bid.whytes.ie
• Visit the timed online auction catalogue
• Find the lot number you are interested in.
• Place your maximum bid which will be kept secret by the system, the current highest bid will be displayed
• The minimum bid required to beat the highest bid will also be shown.
• When you place your maximum bid, the system will automatically bid for you – only enough to meet the reserve or to stay in
the lead, up to your maximum if necessary. Example: Bidder A leaves a maximum bid of €100, bidder B leaves a maximum bid
of €200 on the same lot. Bidder B then has the winning bid unless another bid that beats B’s maximum is received before the
end time.
• If you are outbid you will be notified immediately by email. You have up to the end time to counter bid.
• To increase your bid, simply log in and increase your bid.
• When the timed auction finishes, winning bidders will be notified by email. The timed lots will close at the specified date and
time and will close in chronological order with 1 minute between each lot before it closes.
• Buyers Premium of 20% plus VAT (24.6% in total) will be added to your winning bid amount. Your invoice will detail all the
payment, collection and shipping particulars. There is no additional fee for bidding online with Whyte's.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF SALE NOTICE
Whyte & Sons Auctioneers Limited, trading as Whyte's, hereinafter called "the
auctioneer" exercises all reasonable care to ensure that all descriptions are
reliable and accurate, and that each item is genuine unless the contrary is
indicated. However, the descriptions are not intended to be, are not and are
not to be taken to be, statements of fact or representations of fact in relation
to the lot. They are statements of the opinion of the auctioneers, and
attention is particularly drawn to clause 5 set out below. Comments and
opinions, which may be found in or on lots as labels, notes, lists, catalogue
prices, or any other means of expression, do not constitute part of lot
descriptions and are not to be taken as such unless they are made or
specifically verified by the auctioneers.
Clause 1
(a) Each lot is put up subject to any reserve price imposed by the vendor
(b) Subject to sub-clause (a) of this clause, the highest bidder for each lot shall
be the purchaser thereof
(c) If any dispute arises as to the highest bidder the auctioneer shall have
absolute discretion to determine the dispute and may put up again and re-
sell the lot in respect of which the dispute arises.
Clause 2
(a) The bidding and advances shall be regulated by and at the absolute
discretion of the auctioneer and he shall have the right to refuse any bid or
bids. NOTE: Where an agent bids, even on behalf of a disclosed client, the
auctioneer nevertheless has the right at his discretion to refuse any such bid.
(b) The purchaser of each lot shall immediately on its sale, if required by the
auctioneer, give him the name and address of the purchaser and pay to the
auctioneer at his discretion the whole or part of the purchase money. If the
purchaser of any lot fails to comply with any such requirement the auctioneer
may put up again and re-sell the lot; if upon such re-sale a lower price is
obtained than was obtained on the first sale the purchaser in default on the
first sale shall make good the difference in price and expenses of re-sale
which shall become a debt due from him.
(c) Where an agent purchases on behalf of an undisclosed client such agent
shall be personally liable for payment of the purchase money to the
auctioneer and for safe delivery of the lot to the said client.
Clause 3
(a) The auctioneer reserves the rights to bid on behalf of clients including
vendors, but shall not be liable for errors or omissions in executing
instructions to bid.
(b) The auctioneer reserves the rights, before or during a sale, to group
together lots belonging to the same vendor, to split up and to withdraw any
lot or lots at the auctioneer's absolute discretion and without giving any
reason in any case.
(c) The auctioneer acts as agent only, and therefore shall not be liable for any
default of the purchaser or vendor.
Clause 4
(a) Each lot shall be at the purchaser's risk from the fall of the hammer and
shall be paid for in full before delivery and taken away at his expense within
one day of the sale. The buyer will be responsible for all removal, storage and
insurance charges in respect of any lot which has not been collected within
one day of the date of sale. (b) If any purchaser fails to pay in full for any lot
within 21 days of the date of sale such lot may at any time thereafter at the
auctioneer's discretion be put up for sale by auction again or sold privately; if
upon such re-sale a lower price is obtained than was obtained on the first
sale the purchaser in default on the first sale shall make good the difference
in price and the expenses of re-sale which shall become debt due from him.
(c) Interest at 2 per cent per month and legal costs (if any) for recovery of
monies due shall be payable by the purchaser on any overdue account.
Clause 5
(a) All lots are made available for inspection before each sale and each buyer,
by making a bid, acknowledges that he has satisfied himself as to the physical
condition, age and catalogue description of each lot (including but not
restricted to whether the lot is damaged or has been repaired or restored).
(b) All lots are sold with all faults and imperfections and errors of description
and the Auctioneer and its employees, servants or agents shall not be
responsible for any error of description or for the condition or authenticity of
any lot, save for Clause 5 (c) below. Written or verbal condition reports may be
supplied by the Auctioneer on request but these are merely statements of
opinion, and any error or omission in these reports may not be taken as
grounds for a cancellation of sale or refund of any part of the purchase price
or the cost of any repairs to the lot or lots reported on
(c) A purchaser shall be at liberty to reject any lot if he - (i) gives the
auctioneer written notice of intention to question the genuineness of the lot
within seven days from the date of sale; AND (ii) proves that the lot is a
deliberate forgery and (iii) returns to the auctioneer within 20 days from the
date of sale the lot in the same condition as it was at the time of sale;
provided that the auctioneer may, at his discretion, on receiving a request in
writing from the purchaser, extend for a reasonable period the time for return
of the lot to enable it to be submitted to expertisation. NOTE: The onus of
proving a lot to be a deliberate forgery is on the purchaser.
(d) Where a lot has been submitted to expertisation, all costs of such
expertisation shall be paid by the person who retains the certificate of
expertisation and item or items to which the certificate relates.
(e) Where the purchaser of a lot discharges the onus and acts in accordance
with sub-clause (b) of this clause, the auctioneer shall rescind the sale and
repay to the purchaser the purchase money paid by him in respect of the lot.
(f) No lot shall be rejected if, subsequent to the sale, it has been marked by an
expert committee or treated by any other process unless the auctioneer's
permission to subject the lot to such treatment has first been obtained in
writing.
(g) Any lot listed as a "collection, range, portfolio etc." or stated to comprise or
contain a collection or range of items which are not described shall be put up
for sale not subject to rejection and shall be taken by the purchaser with all (if
any) faults, lack of genuineness and errors of description and numbers of
items in the lot, and the purchaser shall have no right to reject the lot; except
that, notwithstanding the foregoing provisions of this sub-clause, where
before a sale a person intending to bid at the sale gives notice in writing to,
and satisfies the auctioneer that any such lot contains any item or items
undescribed in the sale catalogue and that person specifically describes that
item or those items in that notice, then that item or those items shall, as
between the auctioneer and that person, to be taken to form part of the
description of the lot. Clause 6 The respective rights and obligations of the
parties shall be governed and interpreted by Irish law, and the buyer hereby
submits to the exclusive jurisdiction of the Irish Courts..
Clause 6
The respective rights and obligations of the parties shall be governed and
interpreted by Irish law and the buyer hereby submits to the exclusive
jurisdiction of the Courts of the Republic of Ireland.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
a) The buyer shall pay the Auctioneer a commission at the rate of 20% of the
purchase price (which excludes VAT at the prevailing rate under The Margin
Scheme and which is not reclaimable).
(b) The Auctioneer or its employees, servants or agents may, on request
organise packing and shipping of lots purchased or may order on the buyer's
behalf third parties to pack or ship purchases. Under no circumstances does
the Auctioneer accept any liability whatsoever for any loss or damage
howsoever occasioned in the course of such service.
(c) The buyer authorises the Auctioneer to use any photographs or
illustrations of any lot purchased for any or all purposes as the Auctioneer
may require. The placing of a bid will be taken as full agreement to all the
above conditions

William Conor OBE RHA RUA ROI (1881-1968)
EXERCISING THE GREYHOUNDS, c.1920s-1930s
crayon and oil on paper
signed twice lower left
28.75 by 23.75in. (73 by 60.3cm)
Frame:
38 by 33in. (97 by 84cm.)
Condition:
Paper has been laid down on board and lightly varnished. Two significant tear repairs with retouching
visible in raking light: left side“L”shaped tear 12”horizontal and 9“ vertical; right side (centre, above dogs
heads) 13”horizontal. Two minor 1”repaired tears at top edge left and right of centre.
Presented in a contemporary gilt frame; unglazed
This lively scene of greyhounds and their handlers is an unusual subject in Conor’s oeuvre. The six figures
(three human, three canine) fill the canvas with urgent movement, their positions suggesting that they
are about to emerge from the picture at any moment. The matt surface produced by the mix of crayon
and oil paint seems at odds with the energy of the scene depicted, yet it is typical of Conor’s technique.
The artist first used wax crayon while working as a commercial lithographer in Belfast and continued to
incorporate the medium into drawings and paintings throughout his career.
The son of a Belfast metal worker, Conor attended the Belfast School of Art and spent a brief period
in Paris prior to the outbreak of World War One. During the conflict, he worked as an official war artist
recording munition works, army camps and the training exercises of the Ulster Division. Through the
late 1910s and early 1920s, Conor became more of an established name in Irish and British artistic
circles, showing regularly in group exhibitions in London, Manchester, Liverpool, and Glasgow, as well as
numerous solo exhibitions in Dublin and New York.
Conor exhibited a painting titled Exercising Greyhounds on two occasions: at the Royal Institute of Oil
Painters, London in 1934 (catalogue no. 157) and at the Royal Hibernian Academy (cat., no. 200), however
it is unclear whether either of these was the present work, or a similar painting sold through Christies in
2007, for £90,000 (The Irish Sale, 10 May 2007, lot 118). The more unusual form of signature, with a broad
‘W’resting over the artist’s surname appears on a small number of paintings from the 1920s and 1930s.
Although Conor completed numerous official portrait commissions, he is best known for his depictions
of everyday and working-class life in Belfast, encompassing scenes of work and leisure. Depictions
of animals or sporting scenes are unusual; however, a series of works showing horse racing, now in
the collection of the National Museums Northern Ireland, contain the same sense of movement and
excitement captured in Exercising Greyhounds.

William Greengrass, born in Hertfordshire, was a member of the Grosvenor School of Modern Art, a group
committed to creating art for“regular folk, sold at a price the average man pays for his beer or his cinema
tickets”, as the teacher Claude Flight put it.. Their medium was the humble linocut, where cheap linoleum
flooring was used as printmaking tool. Their subject matter came from a burgeoning everyday world of
sport, including football, rugby, tennis, athletics, horseracing, picnics in the park, daytrips via new public
transport, jazz and nightclub dancing.

inserted broadside printing in French of a letter to Marie Howet the artist and author of the book when it
came out, from Seamus Mac Call, the author of‘And So Began the Irish Nation’. Signed and numbered (15)

Marie Howet travelled frequently abroad, including a visit to Ireland in the mid-1920s with a solo show

influenced by a visit to an exhibition of the Belgian artist’s work in 1937 encouraging her own boldly
linear, highly subjective mode of representation. (1)

‘Artists of Fame and of Promise’, Leicester Galleries, London, July to September 1940, catalogue no. 60
Edward Morland Lewis was born in Carmarthen in 1902. He trained at St John’s Wood School of Art and at
the Royal Academy Schools, London where he met Sickert. Morland Lewis promptly left the academy to
work under Sickert as pupil and assistant. In 1930 he joined the London Artists’Association and exhibited
with this group until it disbanded in 1934.
Many of his paintings were based on photographs he took himself. Like Sickert, he tended to paint
patchwork areas of colour laid over warm under-painting. He concentrated on the seaside towns of south
Wales, Ireland, northern France and Spain. A comparison of one of his photographs with the painting
of the same scene reveals how completely he transformed the information from one medium into the
language of another. The main composition is faithfully transcribed, but the tonal relationships are
slightly exaggerated.
He joined the staff of Chelsea College of Art, where his colleagues included Henry Moore, Graham
Sutherland and John Piper.
He died in north Africa in 1943 while on active service as a camouflage officer.

Born in Dublin on New Years’Day, 1880, Gretta Bowen began painting quite late in life. Having
experimented with left-over paint belonging to her sons George and Arthur Campbell, her talent as an
artist was discovered and much to her surprise, lead to her first solo show in Belfast in 1955. Rather than
trade on her sons’artistic reputations, she decided not to sign her name as Gretta Campbell but instead
with her maiden name, Bowen. In describing her unique style, The Times wrote in 1955:“Rhythm and
movement are the characteristics of her work. There is nothing static in it. She will paint children at play,
a fun fair, nuns in procession, children on their way to confirmation, a Twelfth of July Orange procession,
a military band or dockside scene – and whatever she paints conveys a feeling of brightness, of delight
in life”. (See Snoddy, page 40). Numerous successful solo shows followed at the David Hendriks Gallery,
Dublin, the Bell Gallery, Belfast, the Tom Caldwell Gallery, Dublin and Belfast and also at the Oireachtas,
the RHA and the Ulster Society of Women Artists.
Other depictions of“The Twelfth”(also called the Glorious Twelfth or Orangemen’s Day) is an Ulster
Protestant celebration held on 12 July each year) have been painted by the artist, one other example was
exhibited through the Emer Gallery in their major show of her work in autumn 2009.

Louis le Brocquy’s critically acclaimed‘Head’series began in 1964, following a visit to the Musée de l’Homme, the
anthropological museum, in Paris, marking a significant turning point for the artist. Le Brocquy was compelled by the idea of
the head which he described as:‘The mysterious box which contains the spirit: the outer reality of the invisible interior world
of consciousness.’(1)
Initially, he created a series of anonymous ancestral heads - generalised images suggesting unnamed predecessors. Arising
from that phase, the theme evolved into his series of portraits of well-known creative individuals, mainly writers and artists
that he had met - like Samuel Beckett, James Joyce, John Montague, and (when le Brocquy was a child) WB Yeats but also
some that he revered and knew from their work, such as James Joyce, with whom he identified as a fellow Dubliner.
Le Brocquy’s portrait subjects involved several versions. The multiple representations of a single subject reflected his desire
to capture something of their complexity and range. While clearly individualised portraits, this body of work demonstrates
significant features in common. Each head emerges, disembodied, usually against a plain background. While the portrait
subject is recognisable and readily identified, the heads have an intangible quality to suggest the character and creativity
behind the surface reality of the face.
The present work is remarkable in comprising of two studies of James Joyce, reflecting the concept of multiplicity and, as one
appears more complete in terms of surface and tangibility than the other, suggesting the imaginative processes. Similarly,
the different treatment of the eyes indicates both inward and outward vision. As the artist himself explained of his multiple
images of Joyce:‘It remains an unending task. For to attempt today a portrait, a single static image of a great artist like Joyce
seems to me futile as well as impertinent.’(2)
Louis le Brocquy interpreted the writer’s creative output as a kind of quest or
odyssey, noting how images of James Joyce induced:‘those larger feelings of reverence, compassion and wonder which we all
share in face of that unique boat-shaped head - the raised poop of the forehead, the jutting bow of the jaw - within which he
made his heroic voyage, his navigatio.’(3)

Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Washington Green Fine Art.
While legendary singer-songwriter Bob Dylan needs no introduction, his drawings, paintings, and
silkscreen-on-canvas compositions are not as well-known as his music. Dylan has been making art since
the 1960s, when he came on the scene as a young folk singer in Greenwich Village. Much of his work is
generated out of his tours and reflects the impressions made upon him by the people and places he has
encountered. Dylan’s“Drawn Blank”series, produced between 1989 and 1992 while touring America,
Europe, and Asia, forms a large part of his output. These expressionistic drawings, and the paintings born
out of them, include street and interior scenes, landscapes, portraits, nudes, and still lifes—images as
poetic and personal as his music.
