BUYERS’COMMISSION
20% (excludingVAT) is added to the hammer price of all lots. An
additional fee of 3% (excluding VAT) is charged to on-line
bidders.
ROOM BIDDERS
1. Room bidders must register and obtain a bidding number
on arrival. Proof of identity is required from clients new to us.
2. If successful in obtaining a lot please ensure you display your
number clearly to the auctioneer and that it is your number
that is called out. If there is any doubt about the hammer
price or buyer, please draw this to the attention of the
auctioneer immediately
3. Payment may be made by cash, bank draft, cleared cheque,
debit or credit card — we accept Mastercard orVisa (a charge
of 2% is made on credit card transactions).There is no charge
on debit card transactions..
ABSENTEE BIDDING
1. If you are unable to attend you may bid before the sale, using
the form provided. Enter the maximum you are prepared to
offer for each lot and the auctioneer will represent you as if
you are personally attending the sale. Lots are knocked down
at one step above the next highest bid, and not necessarily
at your highest bid. Example: your bid is €1,000 and next
highest bid is €800 – the hammer price is €850.
2. LIMIT BIDDING: Absentee bidders may limit their total
purchases to a set amount by entering their limit on the
bidding form. This is especially useful for bidders wishing to
cover as many lots as possible while setting a maximum
amount to spend.
3. “OR”BIDDING: Absentee bidders who wish to bid on two or
more lots, but only wish to purchase one, may do so by
entering “OR” between the bids – the lots will be bid on in
catalogue order.
4. EQUAL BIDS: In the event of equal bids being received for
the same lot the first received will be given preference. If the
instruction “break ties” is entered on the bid form the
auctioneer will increase the bid by one step in the event of
equal bids being received or in the event of a tie with a room
bidder.
5. “BUY”BIDS: Unless otherwise instructed bids of“Buy”or“Buy
at Best”shall be taken to indicate bids of up to three times the
stated higher estimate in the catalogue.
6. LIVE INTERNET BIDDING:You may watch and/or bid live with
video and audio link to the saleroom on our website
www.whytes.ie
7. LIVE TELEPHONE BIDDING may be arranged on request,
subject to availability and given at least 24 hours notice. This
facility is only available on lots estimated at €1,000 or more,
and a minimum bid may be requested.
8. INVOICING AND PAYMENT: Successful absentee bidders will
be sent a pro forma invoice immediately after the sale with
details of payment methods. All invoices must be paid within
7 days of the date of the sale or the lot(s) may be deemed in
default and any subsequent losses incurred on resale
become the responsibility of the bidder. The Auctioneers and
House Agents Act, under which we are licensed to hold public
auctions, only allows for lots to be handed over to purchasers
when paid for in full.

A complete list of prices realised and unsold lots will be posted
to our Internet website (www.whytes.ie) on the day after the
sale.
EXPORT LICENCES
Purchasers from outside the State are reminded that export
licences are required for all archaeological items, as well as
artworks and documents that have been in the State for more
than 25 years. Furher details are available from the National
Museum, The National Gallery of Ireland or the Department of
The Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht. The onus on obtaining
such licences is on the purchaser or the purchaser’s shipper.

VENUE FOR AUCTION NIGHT
The venue for the auction is Freemasons Hall, 17 Molesworth
Street, Dublin 2 and the sale starts at 2pm.
Bidder registration will take place here from 1pm on Saturday
10 December and the sale starts at 2pm. Complimentary tea
and coffee will be served in the café.
COLLECTION OF LOTS
Lots may be collected from our Molesworth Street premises up
to 7pm on day of sale, otherwise Monday to Friday 10am to
5pm. Purchasers must pay for and collect all lots within 7 days
of the date of sale. Any lots not collected within that time will be
transferred to an offsite secure storage facility, incurring storage
charges. Lots that have been transferred offsite may only be
collected at two days notice once storage charges have been
paid for in full.

Born in London, the son of artist Sir Muirhead Bone and
author Gertrude Dodd, Stephen Bone first exhibited at
the NEAC at the age of sixteen, and shortly afterward
enrolled at the Slade School of Art (1922-24). In 1928
he collaborated with his friend, the Irish artist William
Eric Horsbrugh-Porter (see lot 132), painting murals for
Piccadilly Underground; the pair also shared a flat in
Knightsbridge. The following year he married the artist
Mary Adshead, and together they travelled across Britain,
Italy and Greece. Around the same time Bone seems
to have also visited Ireland, for in 1929 he held a joint
exhibition with another Irish artist, Sine MacKinnon, at
the Fine Art Society, London, where he exhibited mainly
Connemara landscapes. At the outbreak of World War
II he re-visited Dublin; it was during this visit in 1939
that Bone exhibited the work, The Walls of Dublin, at the
RHA. During the war he served as a camouflage officer
(1939-43) and as an official war artist attached to the
navy (1943-45). He returned to Dublin in 1947, painting
views of O’Connell Street Bridge, the Customs House and
Trinity College (all of which sold through these rooms, 19
November 2001, lots 19 and 20 and 19 September, 2006 lot
29, respectively).

A green Connemara marble sculpture,’Trout’ was shown by the artist at the RHA in 1941 (no. 394). A
memorial exhibition of ten works took place in 1946 which included (no.29) ‘Leenan,Connemara - Trout
(green marble) Lent by artist Miss Kathleen Fox. Power worked in bronze, carved stone and marble. Among
his best-known works are a bust in bronze of Michael Collins and his statue of a Pikeman which stands in
the middle of Denny street in Tralee. A larger version of the present work dating to 1944 can be found in the
collection of the National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin [Purchased, 1949, NGI.8090].

February 2016 at the Clonmel library, Tipperary.

In its original frame of M.H. Gill O’Connell Street Dublin. The oil of Our Lady, Queen of Ireland was
commissioned by the Gill family of Dublin - owners of the publishing company, which later became Gill and
Macmillan. The model for Our Lady was Sarah (‘Sally’) Byrne (later Deale), a student of Seán Keating’s at
the College of Art and later a staff member there. Her portrait was widely painted by her contemporaries at
the time, including Keating whose son Justin was the model for the figure of the child in the present work.
Justin later became a Labour Party minister in the 1970s government of Liam Cosgrave. In his article -
Taking a politician unawares - for the Irish Times on June 16, 2012 Michael Parsons reflected on the artwork
commissioned for the 31st International Eucharistic Congress in Dublin 80 years ago and focused on the
present work. Parson’s noted that, “According to the Catholic Bulletin, a framed print [similar to the present
example we can assume] was presented to Pope Pius XI in the Vatican in 1934 and the artist was praised for
depicting the “Madonna”, for the first time, with “Gaelic features”.”

1916 A bottle of 100 year old whiskey by Dublin Whiskey Distillery.
Matured in cask for over fifty three years, in bond since 1916 until bottled by P & F McGlade, 96 Donegall
Street, Belfast, in 1966. As far as we can ascertain this is the oldest Irish whiskey to ever be offered at auction.
Accompanied by correspondence with Lyle & Kinahan including a letter to the latter, dated 22 March 1966
instructing the firm to sell 2 of the casks to a broker and to bottle the remaining cask. As far as we are aware
only four bottles remain extant, of which this is one.
Original content was 75cl; level is now just below the neck. 70 proof.

Thence by descent
P & F McGlade’s Bar was located at 96 Donegall Street, and 31 Little Donegall Street Belfast. It was founded
in 1888 by Patrick and Frank McGlade, members of an established family of publicans in the city, and was
initially named The Arcade. Patrick and Frank were already owners of a number of bars in the city including
the Queens Cafe in Queen’s Arcade. Within ten years the brothers monopolised the licensed trade in the area
of Donegall Street, owning the International Restaurant Bar & Billiard Hall (destroyed by German bombs in
1941), and the Grand Metropole Hotel.
Located beside the offices of the Irish News and The Belfast Telegraph McGlade’s became a favourite haunt
for both local journalists and those from out of town - in more recent times including many from the
Republic, Britain and elsewhere, sent to cover the Troubles. In one year alone the vistors book boasted over
1,000 entries from journalists. During the war the bar attracted huge numbers of American GI’s. Other
clientele included students and staff from the Art College, local politicians including Gerry Fitt, lawyers from
the courts nearby, and others. According to one review “it was one of the few places during the Troubles that
could be considered a true “melting pot”. Rich and poor, Protestant and Catholic all mingled in harmony. A
haven in a sea of madness.”
”It had a Penny Farthing bicycle mounted on the wall in the upstairs back lounge, boasted the longest bar
counter in Ireland in the downstairs public bar and Mr Frank McGlade, the owner, sported a fresh flower
in his buttonhole every day. The pub was unfortunately burnt down in a fire caused by an electrical fault
in 1983. Ironic and tragic considering so many other Bars in town were destroyed in much less innocent
circumstances.” It had passed into the hands of Bass Ireland a year before the fire.
Dan McDermott, brother of Seán McDermott, one of the signatories to the Proclamation worked behind
the bar at McGlade’s in the early 1900s. Seán spent some time in Belfast as well, where he worked as a tram
conductor from 1905 until he became a full time organiser for Sinn Fein in 1907.
Dublin Whiskey Distillery Company (which became known as DWD) was a limited company formed by
a consortium of seven businessmen including James Walker and William Sealy, better known as printers
and paper merchants. The distillery, in Jones Road, was completed in 1873 and by the 1880s was producing
over 500,000 gallons of whiskey a year. The distillery was state of the art for the time with an electric turbine
driven either by a wheel in the Tolka or steam engines. a big wheel in the adjoining River Tolka or by one of
the plant’s steam engines.
In 1891, DWD joined forces with George Roe and William Jameson - to form the Dublin Distillers Company
Limited (DDC). Each one of these distilleries had huge output and only used pot stills, totally ignoring the
profitability and efficiency of Coffey Stills and grain whiskey, which was increasing being used by the Scots.
Each member of DDC continued to produce Irish pot still whiskey under its own brand name and were
therefore often in direct competition to each other. World War I, Irish Independence, the Civil War and
American Prohibition were to deal deadly blows to all three of these distilleries which had an overproduction
capacity for their ever diminishing markets. It is likely that the Jones Road Distillery stopped full time
distilling in 1926, however it appears that they may have continued distilling irregularly until 1945. The last
known whiskey from Jones Road was a bottling of a whiskey distilled in 1942. An apartment complex, named
The Distillery is on the site and incorporates some of the original buildings.
Wine & Spirits

TASTING NOTE:
Bright bronze in colour with the faintest green tinge. The aromas are harmonious and enticing with touches
of beeswax, melon, white chocolate, linseed oil, dried apricots, sultanas and poached pears. Very typical
of old Dublin pot still whiskeys, with just a faint hint of old engine oil on the nose. The palate is dry and
very smooth. No harsh oak as can often be found in very old whiskeys. Flavours of honey, pepper, sultanas,
stewed fruits, mocha and rich sherry. The quality really shines through on the finish which is long lasting
and rich.

In the early part of the 20th century it was part of a range of whiskeys under their ‘Spot’ brand name. This
name originated from their practice of marking casks of different ages with a daub or spot of coloured paint.
There was a Blue Spot, Red Spot and Yellow Spot, but Green Spot emerged as their most popular whiskey and
is one of the few ‘whiskey bonder brands’ to survive to modern day.
