IN VIEW OF POWER SHORTAGE, GOVT IMPOSES
BAN ON PADDY CULTIVATION FOR RABI SEASON
OUR BUREAU
Hyderabad: The govern-ment
of Andhra Pradesh
State has given green signal
to a proposal for implement-ing
second phase of Gan-gavaram
Port near Visakha-patnam.
This would enable the port
to invest Rs 1,318.73 crore
to develop one coal and three
multipurpose berths in the
port there by increasing the
overall cargo handling capac-ity
from the existing 17.55 to
41 MMTPA (Million Metric
Tonne Per Annum) in the
coming five years.
According to the senior of-ficials
of the State Directorate
of Shipping, Kakinada, the
decision was taken following
a recommendation made by
it earlier that the proposed
second phase was well within
the lines of the ports master
plan. As per the master plan,
which was approved way
back in 2005, the port will
have to develop a total of 29
berths by the year 2037.
Under phase I, the port had
invested nearly Rs 1,520
crore and developed five
berths which are in operation
at present. However, while
approving the second phase
of implementation, the State
government has asked the
port to get Environmental
Impact Assessment (EIA)
and Social Impact Assess-ment
(SIA) done on its own.
Besides, the port should also
implement the International
Security and Port Safety
Code (ISPC) as prescribed
by the Director General of
Shipping. It has also imposed
few more conditions that the
port should maintain the eq-uity
share of the Andhra
Pradesh government in strict
compliance to the provisions
of the concession agreement
between the government and
the Gangavaram Port Ltd.
OUR BUREAU
Hyderabad: With no solu-tion
in sight for the ongoing
power crisis, the Telangana
government on Saturday has
imposed a ban on cultivation
of paddy in the Rabi season
which begins from Novem-ber
1.
Chief Minister K Chan-drasekhar
Rao on Saturday
asked the farmers to cooper-ate
with his government and
go for dry crop cultivation
instead of paddy which con-sumes
huge quantity of en-ergy
to draw water from bore
wells in Telangana. For many
years, paddy was being cul-tivated
as main crop during
Rabi season in Telangana.
This involves use of over 24
lakh bore wells which con-sume
about 40 million units
of power per day (30 per cent
of the total power demand)
in the season. The Chief
Minister said the cultivation
of paddy without adequate
power would aggravate the
problems faced by the farm-ing
community. The Chief
Minister charged the Andhra
Pradesh government and the
Centre for being responsible
for the present power crisis
in Telangana. Non supply of
power allocated to Telangana
from AP after the bifurcation
of State was one of the rea-sons
for the present crisis.
Telangana was entitled to
avail 54 per cent of total
power generation in AP un-der
the AP Reorganisation
Act. Centre was also vindic-tive
towards Telangana in ad-dressing
the power issue, the
CM alleged.
KCR said to overcome the
power crisis in the just con-cluded
Kharif season, the
government purchased
power from power ex-changes
at higher prices and
also generated hydel power
from Nagarjunasagar and
Srisailam power projects.
The government could not
meet the power demand, he
said adding that the purchase
of 1000 MW of power from
Chhattisgarh would help the
State in overcoming the crisis
to a great extent.
FOR MANY YEARS, PADDY HAS BEEN THE
MAIN CROP DURING RABI SEASON IN
TELANGANA. THIS INVOLVES USE OF OVER
24 LAKH BORE WELLS WHICH CONSUME ABOUT
40 MILLION UNITS OF POWER PER DAY

Missing techie

in Bengaluru
Hyderabad: Another fe-male
software engineer,
whose mobile was switched-off
after boarding a bus at
MGBS, put the entire City
Police on edge for a while.
However, it turned out that
she was safe.
According to police, Bha-rani,
26, a techie and resident
of HUDA colony, Attapur, is
working as a software engi-neer
in Bangalore. On Octo-ber
26, she boarded a bus to
Bangalore at 9 pm, while her
father P Mohan Rao came to
see her off at MGBS. How-ever,
when he tried contact-ing

when he contacted her com-pany,
they informed him

VENU K KODIMELA
Hyderabad: Even
as political pundits
struggle to find a solu-tion
to the burning is-sues
in Telangana, the
education officials had de-cided
to test the political
knowledge of students
from Medak district.
The lion’s share of ques-tions
figured in the Social
Studies examination paper
of eighth standard were re-lated
to TRS chief K Chan-drasekhar
Rao and Telan-gana
State. The subjective,
objective and map reading
questions carried 37 marks.
The tenth standard paper
carried 10.5 marks, while
ninth standard paper carried
a meagre 1.5 marks related
to Telangana.
Two essay type ques-tions
(10 marks each) fig-ured
in the eight standard
social studies paper, they
were 1) What advise do
you suggest to overcome
power crisis in our State
(Telangana)? Or what
measures do you suggest to
develop the new State of
Te l a n -
gana into
golden State of
Telangana? 2) Explain the
role of our CM Chan-drasekhar
Rao in the for-mation
of Telangana State
or appreciate the role of
Gandhiji in Indian National
Movement. The remaining
questions for 17 marks
were related to Telangana
map reading and objective
type questions.
According to sources,
the tenth and ninth standard
students found it easy to an-swer
the questions related
to the newly-formed State
but the eight standard
students had a
tough time in an-swering
essay
type questions.
The objec-tive
type ques-tions
on Chief
Minister of
Telangana, Ed-ucation
Minister
and Telangana
Formation Day
figured in the
tenth paper
while objective
questions on
Finance Minister
of Telangana, Dis-trict
Collector of Medak
and DEO of Medak ap-peared
in the ninth standard
paper. A teacher in a pri-vate-
run school in Medak
district said the students
were aware of the latest de-velopments
but failed to put
their ideas forcefully due to
poor writing skills.
If one goes by the trend,
the TRS government might
incorporate one or two
chapters on Telangana and
its struggle in the new syl-labus.
