Thou God Seest Me
1. Thou God Seest Me
Gen 16:13
13) And she called the name of the LORD that spake unto
her, Thou God seest me: for she said, Have I also here
looked after him that seeth me?
If ever there was a Comforting and Convicting
phrase it is this one: “Thou God Seest Me”.
In the life of Hagar, we see the Comforting and
Convicting hand of God orchestrate events. When
she finally realizes what is happening she makes
this statement “Thou God seest me”.
I. Exit from Egypt- Gen 12:10
The savior’s business is saving.
“A false balance is abomination to the LORD: but a
just weight is his delight.”
2. Somewhere in Egypt was a young Egyptian servant
girl that needed a rescue; God chose this time to
engineer her escape.
Gen 12:10
10) And there was a famine in the land: and Abram went
down into Egypt to sojourn there; for the famine was
grievous in the land.
“Thou God seest me”
In the face of a fierce famine Abraham flees to
Egypt. God uses this time to teach Abraham many
things but, for today we will see how this is
designed by God as a rescue mission for an
Egyptian servant girl named Hagar.
Prov 15:3
3) The eyes of the LORD are in every place,
beholding the evil and the good.
“Thou God seest me”

3. II. Ephemeral Exaltation- Gen 16:3
Gen 16:3
3) And Sarai Abram's wife took Hagar her maid the
Egyptian, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of
Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his
wife.
Gen 16:5
5) And Sarai said unto Abram, My wrong be upon thee: I
have given my maid into thy bosom; and when she saw
that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes: the
LORD judge between me and thee.
“Thou God seest me”
A title given does not mean the recipient has earned or
deserved it. In an instant Hagar is transformed from
maid to wife.
With her new title she became “entitled”, without
understanding titles can be removed as fast as they
can be bestowed.
Jer 32:19
4. 19) Great in counsel, and mighty in work: for thine
eyes are open upon all the ways of the sons of
men: to give every one according to his ways, and
according to the fruit of his doings:

II. Ephemeral Exaltation- Gen 16:3
III. Impulsive Reaction- Gen 16:6-8
Gen 16:6-8
6) But Abram said unto Sarai, Behold, thy maid is in thy
hand; do to her as it pleaseth thee. And when Sarai dealt
hardly with her, she fled from her face.
7) And the angel of the LORD found her …
8) And he said, Hagar, Sarai's maid, whence camest thou?
and whither wilt thou go? And she said, I flee from the
face of my mistress Sarai.
The Angel ask Hagar two questions.
Hagar should have been able to tell Him where she
came from.
Her reply reveals the only thing on her mind-Flee
(fight or flight).
She didn’t tell the Angel where she was going either.
5. By comparing with vs.14 we can see she is south of
Beersheba on the caravan road to Egypt.
The actions you take do lead somewhere.

II. Ephemeral Exaltation- Gen 16:3
III. Impulsive Reaction- Gen 16:6-8
IV. Submission for Favor- Gen 16:9
Gen 16:9
9) And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Return to thy
mistress, and submit thyself under her hands.
She had to submit to the Angel of the LORD
She had to submit to Sarai (“thy mistress”)
She had to submit to her calling (a servant)
She now serves the Angel not Abraham; Abraham is
just middle management.
“Thou God seest me”
6. Prov 15:1
1) A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous
words stir up anger.
Eccl 10:4
4) If the spirit of the ruler rise up against thee, leave
not thy place; for yielding pacifieth great offences.
Gen 16:10-11
10) And the angel of the LORD said unto her, I will
multiply thy seed exceedingly, that it shall not be
numbered for multitude.
11) And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Behold, thou
art with child, and shalt bear a son, and shalt call his
name Ishmael; because the LORD hath heard thy
affliction.

Gen 16:15
15) And Hagar bare Abram a son: and Abram called
his son's name, which Hagar bare, Ishmael.

Gen 16:13
13) And she called the name of the LORD that spake unto
her, Thou God seest me: for she said, Have I also here
looked after him that seeth me?
Because God’s hand has been so merciful to us
Hagar’s last statement should urge us to serve
whole heartedly.
Rom 2:4
4) Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and
forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the
goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?
“Thou God seest me”- about time you noticed.
“Have I looked after him?” - we should seek to
serve now out of love and respect.
