THE CROOKED COMMUNIST COUPLE
1. The Crooked Communist
Couple
Text: Act 5:1-5
Intro
Acts 2:44-45
44 And all that believed were together, and had
all things common;
45 And sold their possessions and goods, and
parted them to all men, as every man had need.
2. Acts 4:32
And the multitude of them that believed were of
one heart and of one soul: neither said any of
them that ought of the things which he
possessed was his own; but they had all things
common.
I. The Plot
Acts 5:1-3
1But a certain man named Ananias, with
Sapphira his wife, sold a possession,
3. 2And kept back part of the price, his wife also
being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and
laid it at the apostles' feet.
3But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled
thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep
back part of the price of the land?
Acts 5:9 Then Peter said unto her, How is
it that ye have agreed together to tempt the
Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them
which have buried thy husband are at the
door, and shall carry thee out.
Job 22:13 And thou sayest, How doth God
know? can he judge through the dark cloud?
Ps 94:7-10 7 Yet they say, The LORD
shall not see, neither shall the God of Jacob
regard it. 8 Understand, ye brutish among
the people: and ye fools, when will ye be
wise? 9 He that planted the ear, shall he not
4. hear? he that formed the eye, shall he not
see? 10 He that chastiseth the heathen, shall
not he correct? he that teacheth man
knowledge, shall not he know?
Isa 29:15 Woe unto them that seek deep to
hide their counsel from the LORD, and their
works are in the dark, and they say, Who
seeth us? and who knoweth us?
Jer 23:24 Can any hide himself in secret
places that I shall not see him? saith the
LORD. Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith
the LORD.
5. II. The Possession
Acts 5:4
4Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and
after it was sold, was it not in thine own power?
why hast thou conceived this thing in thine
heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto
God.
4Whiles it remained, was it not thine
own?
Exod 35:21 And they came, every one
whose heart stirred him up, and every one
6. whom his spirit made willing, and they
brought the LORD'S offering to the work of
the tabernacle of the congregation, and for
all his service, and for the holy garments.
Exod 35:29 The children of Israel brought
a willing offering unto the LORD, every
man and woman, whose heart made them
willing to bring for all manner of work,
which the LORD had commanded to be
made by the hand of Moses.
Phlm 1:14 But without thy mind would I
do nothing; that thy benefit should not be as
it were of necessity, but willingly.
why hast thou conceived this thing in thine
heart? For a name
Josh 7:25 And Joshua said, Why hast thou
troubled us? the LORD shall trouble thee
this day. And all Israel stoned him with
7. stones, and burned them with fire, after they
had stoned them with stones. For gain
Acts 8:22-23 22 Repent therefore of this
thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps
the thought of thine heart may be forgiven
thee.
23 For I perceive that thou art in the gall of
bitterness, and in the bond of iniquity. For
pain
III. The Perspective
8. Acts 5:4
…thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.
1Sam 8:7 And the LORD said unto
Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the
people in all that they say unto thee: for they
have not rejected thee, but they have
rejected me, that I should not reign over
them.
2Kgs 5:25-27 25 But he went in, and
stood before his master. And Elisha said
unto him, Whence comest thou, Gehazi?
And he said, Thy servant went no whither.
26 And he said unto him, Went not mine
heart with thee, when the man turned again
from his chariot to meet thee? Is it a time to
receive money, and to receive garments, and
oliveyards, and vineyards, and sheep, and
oxen, and menservants, and maidservants?
27 The leprosy therefore of Naaman shall
cleave unto thee, and unto thy seed for ever.
9. And he went out from his presence a leper
as white as snow.
Ps 139:4 For there is not a word in my
tongue, but, lo, O LORD, thou knowest it
altogether.
1Thess 4:8 He therefore that despiseth,
despiseth not man, but God, who hath also
given unto us his holy Spirit.
IV. The Passing
10. Acts 5:5
5And Ananias hearing these words fell down,
and gave up the ghost:
Acts 5:10-11 10 Then fell she down
straightway at his feet, and yielded up the
ghost: and the young men came in, and
found her dead, and, carrying her forth,
buried her by her husband. 11 And great
fear came upon all the church, and upon as
many as heard these things.
Acts 13:8 But Elymas the sorcerer (for so
is his name by interpretation) withstood
them, seeking to turn away the deputy from
the faith.
Acts 13:11 And now, behold, the hand of
the Lord is upon thee, and thou shalt be
blind, not seeing the sun for a season. And
immediately there fell on him a mist and a
11. darkness; and he went about seeking some
to lead him by the hand.
5…and great fear came on all them that
heard these things.
Acts 5:10-11 10 Then fell she down
straightway at his feet, and yielded up the
ghost: and the young men came in, and
found her dead, and, carrying her forth,
buried her by her husband.
11 And great fear came upon all the church,
and upon as many as heard these things.
Acts 2:42-43 42 And they continued
stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and
fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in
prayers.
43 And fear came upon every soul: and
many wonders and signs were done by the
apostles.
12. Num 16:34 And all Israel that were round
about them fled at the cry of them: for they
said, Lest the earth swallow us up also.
Deut 13:6 If thy brother, the son of thy
mother, or thy son, or thy daughter, or the
wife of thy bosom, or thy friend, which is as
thine own soul, entice thee secretly, saying,
Let us go and serve other gods, which thou
hast not known, thou, nor thy fathers;
Deut 13:9 But thou shalt surely kill him;
thine hand shall be first upon him to put him
to death, and afterwards the hand of all the
people.
Deut 13:11 And all Israel shall hear, and
fear, and shall do no more any such
wickedness as this is among you.
13. Ps 119:120 My flesh trembleth for fear of
thee; and I am afraid of thy judgments.
2Cor 7:11 For behold this selfsame thing,
that ye sorrowed after a godly sort, what
carefulness it wrought in you, yea, what
clearing of yourselves, yea, what
indignation, yea, what fear, yea, what
vehement desire, yea, what zeal, yea, what
revenge! In all things ye have approved
yourselves to be clear in this matter.
