Someone is Watching for your Soul
1. Someone is Watching for
your Soul
God’s ICU- I See You
Heb 13:17
Ps 142:3-4
3 When my spirit was overwhelmed within me,
then thou knewest my path.
In the way wherein I walked
have they privily laid a snare for me.
4 I looked on my right hand, and beheld,
but there was no man that would know me:
refuge failed me;
no man cared for my soul.
In verse 3 he knew God cared, but he had no human he
could depend on.
At the age of 12 William Ernest Henley was diagnosed
with tubercular arthritis that necessitated the amputation
of one of his legs just below the knee;
2. the other foot was saved only through a radical surgery.
As he healed in the infirmary, Henley wrote his famous
poem “Invictus” (Latin for unconquerable or undefeated).
“Invictus”
“It matters not how strait the gate,
how charged with punishments the scroll.
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.”
His 12year old imagination of grandeur
was powerless 41 years later
when the angel of death
dressed in a cloak of tuberculosis
ripped the title “Invictus”
from his brow and
branded him Inept.
2Tim 4:10 For Demas hath forsaken me, having loved
this present world, and is departed unto Thessalonica;
Crescens to Galatia, Titus unto Dalmatia.
2Tim 4:16 At my first answer no man stood with
me, but all men forsook me: I pray God that it may
not be laid to their charge.
3. Poor Henley didn’t realize, at the age of 12,
it wasn’t his will power
that saved him from death,
but the doctors and nurses
and ultimately Gods mercy,
or he wouldn’t have lived long enough
to steal the credit.
2Tim 4:11 Only Luke is with me…
Heb 13:17
17 Obey them that have the rule over you,
and submit yourselves:
for they watch for your souls,
as they that must give account,
that they may do it with joy, and not with grief:
for that is unprofitable for you.
Someone cares for your soul;
you too should care for someone’s soul.
4. As a Steward
1Cor 4:2 Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man
be found successful faithful.
As an Ambassador
2Cor 5:20 Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as
though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in
Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God.
As a Nurse
1Thess 2:7 But we were gentle among you, even as a
nurse cherisheth her children:
As a Parent
Phlm 1:10-11 10 I beseech thee for my son Onesimus,
whom I have begotten in my bonds:
11 Which in time past was to thee unprofitable, but now
profitable to thee and to me:
I. Who Cares for Your Soul?
1Cor 16:15-16 15 I beseech you, brethren, (ye know the
house of Stephanas, that it is the firstfruits of Achaia, and
5. that they have addicted themselves to the ministry of
the saints,)
16 That ye submit yourselves unto such, and to every
one that helpeth with us, and laboureth.
1Thess 5:12 And we beseech you, brethren, to know them
which labour among you, and are over you in the Lord,
and admonish you;
Heb 13:24 Salute all them that have the rule over you,
and all the saints. They of Italy salute you.
II. How Do They Care for Your Soul?
Acts 20:28 Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all
the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you
overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath
purchased with his own blood.
Acts 6:2-4 2 Then the twelve called the multitude of
the disciples unto them, and said, It is not reason that
we should leave the word of God, and serve tables.
3 Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven
men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and
wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business.
6. 4 But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and
to the ministry of the word.
Rom 15:2 Let every one of us please his neighbour for his
good to edification.
2Cor 1:24 Not for that we have dominion over your faith,
but are helpers of your joy: for by faith ye stand.
Gal 1:10 For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek
to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be
the servant of Christ.
Gal 6:2 Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the
law of Christ.
Gal 6:10 As we have therefore opportunity, let us do
good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the
household of faith.
1Tim 4:16 Take heed unto thyself, and unto the
doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt
both save thyself, and them that hear thee.
7. Heb 13:7 Remember them which have the rule over you,
who have spoken unto you the word of God: whose
faith follow, considering the end of their conversation.
III. Why Does It Matter?
Heb 13:17 Obey them that have the rule over you, and
submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they
that must give account, that they may do it with joy,
and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.
Phil 3:18 (For many walk, of whom I have told you often,
and now tell you even weeping, that they are the
enemies of the cross of Christ:
Prov 18:24 A man that hath friends must shew himself
friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a
brother.
Or an adversary greater than any enemy.
Prov 5:10-14
10 Lest strangers be filled with thy wealth; and thy labours
be in the house of a stranger;
11 And thou mourn at the last, when thy flesh and thy
body are consumed,
8. 12 And say, How have I hated instruction, and my heart
despised reproof;
13 And have not obeyed the voice of my teachers, nor
inclined mine ear to them that instructed me!
14 I was almost in all evil in the midst of the
congregation and assembly.
Conclusion: Divine Duos
Gen 2:18 And the LORD God said, It is not good that the
man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for
him.
Mark 6:7 And he called unto him the twelve, and began to
send them forth by two and two; and gave them power
over unclean spirits;
Luke 10:1 After these things the Lord appointed other
seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face
into every city and place, whither he himself would come.
