MATURITY
1. MATURITY
Text: Gen 28:10-22
What do you call a cheesy dad joke that has reached
maturity?
Full groan
Signs Of Maturity-
Your house plants are alive, and you can't smoke any
of them.
6:00 AM is when you get up, not when you go to bed.
Sleeping on the couch makes your back hurt.
You actually eat breakfast food at breakfast time.
90% of the time you spend in front of a computer is for
real work.
Jacob is soon to be on the fast track of maturity.
Gen 28:10-22
Jacob has won both the birthright and the blessing; but now the
price must be paid.
2. The path to exaltation begins with humiliation.
Jacob unwittingly demonstrated this principle when to get the
blessing he had to enter his fathers presence in the name of his
brother Esau and be cloth in the apparel of the beloved son’s
wardrobe.
The path to exaltation begins with humiliation.
I. Crisis-Gen 28:10-15
Necessity over Preference
Gen 25:27 And the boys grew: and Esau was a cunning hunter,
a man of the field; and Jacob was a plain man, dwelling in tents.
Gen 28:10-11 10 And Jacob went out from Beersheba, and
went toward Haran.
This is a long journey for Jacob. One natural stopping
places along the way would have been the city of Luz.
Situated in the mountains of Ephraim, (Bethel- Luz) about
12 miles north of Jerusalem; it was a three day journey
from Beersheba (Gen 22:4) about 20 miles.
Gen 22:4 Then on the third day Abraham lifted up
his eyes, and saw the place afar off.
3. 11 And he lighted upon a certain place, and tarried there all
night, because the sun was set; and he took of the stones of that
place, and put them for his pillows, and lay down in that place to
sleep.
II. Comprehension-Gen 28:16-17
Gen 28:16-17 16 And Jacob awaked out of his sleep, and he
said, Surely the LORD is in this place; and I knew it not.
17 And he was afraid, and said, How dreadful is this place! this
is none other but the house of God, and this is the gate of
heaven.
Exod 3:5 And he said, Draw not nigh hither: put off thy
shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest
is holy ground.
Josh 5:15 And the captain of the LORD'S host said unto
Joshua, Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place
whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so.
Job 9:11 Lo, he goeth by me, and I see him not: he
passeth on also, but I perceive him not.
Job 33:14 For God speaketh once, yea twice, yet man
perceiveth it not.
4. Isa 8:13 Sanctify the LORD of hosts himself; and let him
be your fear, and let him be your dread.
III. Consecration-Gen 28:18-19
Gen 28:18-19 18 And Jacob rose up early in the morning,
and took the stone that he had put for his pillows, and set it up
for a pillar, and poured oil upon the top of it.
19 And he called the name of that place Bethel: but the name of
that city was called Luz at the first.
Exod 12:14 And this day shall be unto you for a
memorial; and ye shall keep it a feast to the LORD
throughout your generations; ye shall keep it a feast by an
ordinance for ever.
Exod 17:14-15 14 And the LORD said unto Moses,
Write this for a memorial in a book, and rehearse it in
the ears of Joshua: for I will utterly put out the
remembrance of Amalek from under heaven. 15 And
Moses built an altar, and called the name of it
Jehovahnissi:
Josh 4:7 Then ye shall answer them, That the waters of
Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the
LORD; when it passed over Jordan, the waters of Jordan
5. were cut off: and these stones shall be for a memorial
unto the children of Israel for ever.
Neh 2:20 Then answered I them, and said unto them, The
God of heaven, he will prosper us; therefore we his
servants will arise and build: but ye have no portion, nor
right, nor memorial, in Jerusalem.
Ps 56:8 Thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears
into thy bottle: are they not in thy book?
Mal 3:16 Then they that feared the LORD spake often one
to another: and the LORD hearkened, and heard it, and a
book of remembrance was written before him for them
that feared the LORD, and that thought upon his name.
IV. Contract-Gen 28:20-22
Gen 28:20-22 20 And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If God
will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will
give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on,
21 So that I come again to my father's house in peace; then
shall the LORD be my God:
22 And this stone, which I have set for a pillar, shall be God's
house: and of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the
tenth unto thee.
6. Gen 28:13 And, behold, the LORD stood above it, and
said, I am the LORD God of Abraham thy father, and the
God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I
give it, and to thy seed;
Gen 28:15 And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep
thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee
again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have
done that which I have spoken to thee of.
John 6:37 All that the Father giveth me shall come to me;
and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.
John 10:28-29 28 And I give unto them eternal life; and
they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them
out of my hand. 29 My Father, which gave them me, is
greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my
Father's hand.
1Cor 3:15 If any man's work shall be burned, he shall
suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.
Eph 4:30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby
ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
7. Rom 3:4 God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar;
as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings,
and mightest overcome when thou art judged.
In the day of Judgment, God will allow men to question
why He did what he did or allowed, and God will show
Himself to be righteous (Romans 3:19,26 ).
Rom 3:19 Now we know that what things soever the law
saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every
mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become
guilty before God.
Rom 3:26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness:
that he might be just, and the justifier of him which
believeth in Jesus.
Luke 20:26 is a good example of God answering for Himself in
the Day of Judgment.
Luke 20:26 And they could not take hold of his words
before the people: and they marvelled at his answer, and
held their peace.
