3. Signs of the Times
Mat 16:1-4 ESV And the Pharisees and Sadducees
came, and to test him they asked him to show them a
sign from heaven. (2) He answered them, "When it is
evening, you say, 'It will be fair weather, for the sky is
red.' (3) And in the morning, 'It will be stormy today,
for the sky is red and threatening.' You know how to
interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot
interpret the signs of the times. (4) An evil and
adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will
be given to it except the sign of Jonah." So he left them
and departed.
4. Signs of the Times Signs of the Weather
Red sky at night, shepherd's delight.
Red sky at morning, shepherd take warning;
Or
Red sky at morning, sailors take warning;
Red sky at night, sailors' delight.
5. Signs of the Times Signs of the Weather
Mat 16:2-3 ESV He answered them, "When it is evening, you say, 'It
will be fair weather, for the sky is red.' (3) And in the morning, 'It will
be stormy today, for the sky is red and threatening.' You know how to
interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of
the times.
6. Signs of the Times Signs of Modern
Technology
1Jn 2:15-17 ESV Do not love the world or the things in the world. If
anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. (16) For all
that is in the world--the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes
and pride in possessions--is not from the Father but is from the world.
(17) And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever
does the will of God abides forever.
7. Signs of the Times Signs of Society
Rom 1:16-20 ESV For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the
power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and
also to the Greek. (17) For in it the righteousness of God is revealed
from faith for faith, as it is written, "The righteous shall live by faith."
(18) For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all
ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness
suppress the truth. (19) For what can be known about God is plain to
them, because God has shown it to them. (20) For his invisible
attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly
perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have
been made. So they are without excuse.
8. Signs of the Times Signs of Society
Rom 1:21-25 ESV For although they knew God, they did not honor him
as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking,
and their foolish hearts were darkened. (22) Claiming to be wise, they
became fools, (23) and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for
images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping
things. (24) Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to
impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, (25)
because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and
served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever!
Amen.
9. Signs of the Times Signs of Society
Rom 1:26-32 ESV For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable
passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are
contrary to nature; (27) and the men likewise gave up natural relations
with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men
committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due
penalty for their error. (28) And since they did not see fit to
acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what
ought not to be done. (29) They were filled with all manner of
unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy,
murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, (30) slanderers,
haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient
to parents, (31) foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. (32) Though they
know God's decree that those who practice such things deserve to die,
they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.
10. Sign of the Jonah
Mat 16:4 ESV An evil and adulterous
generation seeks for a sign, but no sign
will be given to it except the sign of
Jonah." So he left them and departed.
Mat 12:38-41 ESV Then some of the scribes and Pharisees
answered him, saying, "Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you."
(39) But he answered them, "An evil and adulterous generation
seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the
prophet Jonah. (40) For just as Jonah was three days and three
nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three
days and three nights in the heart of the earth. (41) The men of
Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and
condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold,
something greater than Jonah is here.
11. The Greatest Sign Ever!
Mar 8:31 ESV And he began to teach them that the
Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected
by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes
and be killed, and after three days rise again.
Mar 10:32-34 ESV And they were on the road, going
up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking ahead of
them. And they were amazed, and those who followed
were afraid. And taking the twelve again, he began to
tell them what was to happen to him, (33) saying,
"See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of
Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the
scribes, and they will condemn him to death and
deliver him over to the Gentiles. (34) And they will
mock him and spit on him, and flog him and kill him.
And after three days he will rise."
12. Signs from Heaven Open Your Eyes
Mat 16:1 ESV And the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and to test
him they asked him to show them a sign from heaven.
Luk 7:20-23 ESV And when the men had come to him, they said,
"John the Baptist has sent us to you, saying, 'Are you the one who is
to come, or shall we look for another?'" (21) In that hour he healed
many people of diseases and plagues and evil spirits, and on many
who were blind he bestowed sight. (22) And he answered them, "Go
and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their
sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead
are raised up, the poor have good news preached to them. (23) And
blessed is the one who is not offended by me."
13. Signs from Heaven Signs were all
Around
Mat 16:5-12 ESV When the disciples reached the other side, they had
forgotten to bring any bread. (6) Jesus said to them, "Watch and beware
of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees." (7) And they began
discussing it among themselves, saying, "We brought no bread." (8) But
Jesus, aware of this, said, "O you of little faith, why are you discussing
among yourselves the fact that you have no bread? (9) Do you not yet
perceive? Do you not remember the five loaves for the five thousand,
and how many baskets you gathered? (10) Or the seven loaves for the
four thousand, and how many baskets you gathered? (11) How is it that
you fail to understand that I did not speak about bread? Beware of the
leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees." (12) Then they understood that
he did not tell them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the teaching
of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
14. Signs from Heaven Signs were all
Around
Joh 6:47-51 ESV Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal
life. (48) I am the bread of life. (49) Your fathers ate the manna in the
wilderness, and they died. (50) This is the bread that comes down from
heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. (51) I am the living bread
that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live
forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my
flesh."
15. Signs from Heaven Signs were all
Around
Mar 16:20 ESV And they went out and preached everywhere, while the
Lord worked with them and confirmed the message by accompanying
signs.
Heb 1:1-2 ESV Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke
to our fathers by the prophets, (2) but in these last days he has spoken to
us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom
also he created the world.
Heb 2:1-4 ESV Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we
have heard, lest we drift away from it. (2) For since the message
declared by angels proved to be reliable, and every transgression or
disobedience received a just retribution, (3) how shall we escape if we
neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it
was attested to us by those who heard, (4) while God also bore witness
by signs and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit
distributed according to his will.
