Transposition is a method of DNA insertion that involves DNA being removed from one area of the genome and inserted into another area, which can disrupt gene expression. It differs from viral insertion which involves a virus inserting its DNA into random areas of the host genome. Transposition can occur in plant and bacterial genomes but is rare in human genomes.
