3. PRIVACY?!
“Living the public life is the new default”
“Transparency will replace privacy as the social norm and ideal”
“Privacy is a passing artifact of the industrial age”

4. PRIVACY?!
(right to be let alone)

Privacy. Harvard Law Review, 4(5), 193–220.
5. PRIVACY?!
Privacy… als controle over persoonlijke informatie
“Privacy is the claim of individuals, groups, or
institutions to determine for themselves when, how, and
to what extent information about them is communicated
to others” (Westin, 1967, p. 7).

TECHNOLOGIE
̶ Privacy als ruilgoed (‘gratis’ diensten)
̶ “Public by default, privacy through effort”
̶ Privacy rich/ privacy poor

13. THE YOUNG AND THE RECKLESS?
̶ “Adults are concerned about invasion of privacy, while teens
freely give up information” (Barnes, 2006)
̶ Privacy paradox

14. PARADOXAAL GEDRAG?
‒ ‘Pizza over privacy’ experiment
“To see whether a small incentive could influence a decision about privacy,
researchers offered one group of students a free pizza — as long as they
disclosed three friends’ email addresses. An overwhelming majority of the students
chose pizza over protecting their friends’ privacy”
= paradoxaal?

15. CREATIEVE PRIVACY
“In a world in which posting updates is common, purposeful, and performative, sharing
often allows teens to control a social situation more than simply opting out. It also
guarantees that others can’t define the social situation. Sitting in an afterschool
program in Los Angeles, I casually asked a teen participant why she shared so many
embarrassing photos of herself on her profile. She laughed and told me that it was a lot
safer if she shared her photos and put them in context by what she wrote than if she did not
because she knew that her friends also had embarrassing photos. They’d be happy to
embarrass her if she let them. But by taking preemptive action and mocking herself by
writing dismissive messages on photos that could be interpreted problematically, she
undermined her friends’ ability to define the situation differently. After explaining her logic,
she continued on to explain how her apparent exhibitionism left plenty of room for
people to not focus in on the things that were deeply intimate in her life.”

17. CYNISME, FATALISME, DEFAITISME, GELATENDHEID …
17
̶ “What can I really do?” -> slechts 25%...
‒ Privacy fatalisme? (M=3.65; SD=1.22)

privacy on social media. New Media & Society, 22(6), 1058-1075.
21. SHARENTING GEDRAG
̶ Veelal 1 ouder (moeder)

22. SHARENTING DILEMMA’S
What is “their story to tell”?

boundaries of the digital self. Popular Communication 15(2): 110–125.
24. ̶ Enkele resultaten (link)
gegevens gevoelig liggen. Minder nauwkeurige gegevens,
zoals een gsm-signaal, worden vaker als aanvaardbaar
beschouwd.
CORONA ALERT
27. DATA SCHENDINGEN
̶ Focus ligt vaak bij overheden (bv. Prism programma) of
sociale media providers (bv. Cambridge Analytica)
̶ Maar wat met zogenaamde ‘social games’?
̶ Angry Birds (Rovio)
̶ FarmVille (Zynga)
̶ Candy Crush Saga (King)
̶ …
27
30. ZYNGA
‘gaming’ bedrijf’
̶ Winstmodel? Via advertenties en het verkopen van
virtuele goederen
“In 2012, Facebook, which takes a percentage of income
from third party users revealed that Zynga accounted for
12% of total profits in 2011.”

of big data mining, Communication Research and Practice, 1:2, 147-158, DOI:

31. ZYNGA EN FACEBOOK
̶ Symbiotische relatie
̶ Data mining:
“Used to identify patterns and associations that can be used
for game design and enhance player experiences, but also…
to identify and harness players’ desires and wallets.”
31
̶ Moeilijke keuze:
“either they [users] accept in total and give away access to
the requested information and any further information as to
their in-game and across activities or they don’t play the
game; the game many of their friends may be playing.”
32
game’

35. TRANSPARANTIE PARADOX
35

37. CONTROLE PARADOX
• Control paradox
37
- B = Block; C = City; N = Nothing;
E= exact location
- De exacte locatie (E) werd in een
2de bevraging toegevoegd.
- Verwacht: sommigen zullen
kiezen voor Exacte locatie
- Resultaat: Iedereen schoof op
(niet alleen B -> E)
38. TAKEAWAYS
̶ Privacy = complex en gelaagd
̶ Technologie ≠ probleem ≠ oplossing
onvoorzichtig/ roekeloos. Onderzoek schets genuanceerder
beeld
̶ Privacy geletterdheid als de ‘zilveren kogel’?
