• Botanical name -
Plantago ovata
• Family -
Plantaginaceae
• English name – Spogel seed

4. SYNONYMS
• Sheetbeej(due to its cooling effect)
• Ishadagol (seed are little round )
• Ashvakarnabeej(its seed resemble like
horse’s ear)

6. MORPHOLOGY
• It is an annual ,hairy stalk less shrub

7. Flower stalk is ovate and cylindrical , spherical &
pointed with numerous flowering shoots.

8. Seed shell bifurcated & contains
one seed in each compartment

9. Seed resemble to horse’s ear , boat-shaped ,
white in colour ,fleshy part red in colour due to
this the seeds have pinkish hue.

10. After dipping in water the seeds
swell up and become fragrant.

• The seed husk of ashwagol soaked in water
and use to treat distension of abdomen ,
constipation , flatulence .
• The seeds powder is used for burning
sensations and excessive thirst in body .
• The fried seeds (ghee) used to treat IBS .
• The paste of seeds of isabgol use externally to
treat herpes and localaized swelling with
burning and postules .
