3. 1: What is an Earthquake
An Earthquake is a shaking of the Earth caused by
the sudden breaking and shifting of large sections
of the Earth’s rocky outer shell. Earthquakes are
amongst the most powerful events on the Earth
,and their results can be terrifying. A severe
earthquake may release energy 10,000 times as
great as that of the first atomic bomb.
Earthquakes can trigger landslides that may
cause great damage and loss of life.

5. 2: Why Earthquakes happen?
• An earthquake occurs when the plates in the
Earth’s surface break and shift from their
places. They release a lot of energy through
shock-waves that shake the ground in the
surrounding area. This shaking can be
destructive if it is violent. It can destroy
buildings ,roads and other structures. Rock
movements during an earthquake can make
rivers change their course.
6. 3: Earthquakes in the sea-Tsunami’s
Tsunami is a group of waves, one after another,
created by disturbance that changes the water
surface drastically. Earthquakes under the sea
are one such disturbance which cause rise or
fall in water level, Resulting in tsunami.

8. 4: What to do in an Earthquake
If you are inside, do not try to rush out of the
building. Get under a large, stable piece of
furniture like a table and hold on it to keep it
away from moving away from you. After the
finish of tremors, get outside away from the
building to an open space.
9. 5: San Andreas Fault
It is a slip fault where displacement is horizontal.
This is the site of frequent earthquakes. Faults
are the places in the crust of earth where rocks
have moved, are mainly created when the crust
slips suddenly.
