1. A Prayer For The People of God
Holy God, you gather the whole universe
into your radiant presence
and continually reveal your Son as our Savior.
Bring healing to all wounds,
make whole all that is broken,
speak truth to all illusion, and shed light
in every darkness, that all creation
will see your glory and know your Christ.
Amen.

- THE WHAT -
“And yet
I will show you
the most
excellent way.”

14
- THE WHERE -
“Follow the way
of love, and
eagerly desire
gifts of the Spirit…”
8. If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels,
but do not have love, I am only a resounding
gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift
of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries
and all knowledge, and if I have a faith
that can move mountains, but do not
have love, I am nothing. If I give all
I possess to the poor and give over
my body to hardship that I may boast,
but do not have love, I gain nothing.
1 COR
13:1-3
(NIV)
9. Love is patient, love is kind.
It does not envy, it does not boast,
it is not proud. It does not dishonor others,
it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered,
it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not
delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.
It always protects, always trusts,
always hopes, always perseveres.
Love never fails. But where there are
prophecies, they will cease; where
there are tongues, they will be stilled;
where there is knowledge, it will pass away.
1 COR
13:4-8
(NIV)
10. For we know in part and we prophesy in
part, but when completeness comes, what
is in part disappears. When I was a child,
I talked like a child, I thought like a child,
I reasoned like a child. When I became a
man, I put the ways of childhood behind me.
For now we see only a reflection as in
a mirror; then we shall see face to face.
Now I know in part; then I shall know fully,
even as I am fully known. And now these
three remain: faith, hope and love.
But the greatest of these is love.
1 COR
13:9-13
(NIV)
14. 1. Love can be expressed, or contradicted,
by our actions AND by our words
2. Love can inspire AND be inspired by prayer;
prayer is for love of friend AND enemy

15. “I can no longer condemn or hate
my brother for whom I pray,
no matter how much trouble
he causes me. His face, that hitherto
may have been strange and
intolerable to me, is transformed
in intercession into the
countenance of a brother
for whom Christ died.”

21. “The point of discourse is to learn
with and from one another.
I used to tell my students that
at least 20 percent of what I was
telling them was wrong, but I didn’t
know which 20 percent it was;
I make many mistakes in life,
in relationships, and in work,
and I don’t expect to be free
of them in my thinking.”

22. thoughts on LOVE in everyday life
1. Love can be expressed, or contradicted,
by our actions AND by our words
2. Love can inspire AND be inspired by prayer;
prayer is for love of friend AND enemy
3. Spiritual GIFTING is not the same as spiritual
MATURITY; spiritual MATURITY = the ability to
love God and love my neighbor as myself
23. - If I lead a church of 500 or 5,000,
but do not have love, my leadership
means nothing
- If I welcome people into my home,
and if I give thousands to my favorite
non-profits, but don’t have love,
my generosity is ultimately worthless
- If I write best-selling books, or give
keynote addresses at large conferences,
or give the best sermons anyone has
ever heard, but don’t have love, I might
as well not have written or said a word…

4. Spiritual gifts won’t last forever; only LOVE does
25. Benediction: a prayer in honor of St. Francis
May God make you an instrument of the Trinity’s peace.
Where there is hatred, may you sow love; where there is
injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is
despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there
is sadness, joy. O Divine Master, grant that we may not so
much seek to be consoled, as to console; to be understood,
as to understand; to be loved, as to love. For it is in giving
that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Amen.
