1. A Prayer For The People of God
Almighty God,
creator of heaven and earth
in whom all things are possible,
have mercy on us and heal us,
that sustained by the power of your word
and by the constant intercession
of our Lord and Savior,
we may draw near to you
and follow in your way as faithful disciples.
Amen.

5. The old priesthood of Aaron
perpetuated itself automatically,
father to son, without explicit
confirmation by God. But then
God intervened and called this
new, permanent priesthood into
being with
an added promise: God gave his
word;
he won’t take it back: “You’re
the permanent priest.” Psa 110:4

6. Earlier there were a lot of
priests,
for they died and had to be
replaced.
But Jesus’ priesthood is
permanent.
He’s there from now to eternity
to save everyone who comes to
God through him, always on the
job to speak up for them.
HEBREW

7. So now we have a high priest
who perfectly fits our needs:
completely holy, uncompromised
by sin, with authority extending
as high as God’s presence in
heaven itself. Unlike the other
high priests,
he doesn’t have to offer sacrifices
for his own sins every day before
he can get around to us and our

8. The law appoints as
high priests men who are
never able to get the job done
right.
But this intervening command of
God, (the “oath” or “promise”
from v.22)
which came later, appoints the
Son,
who is absolutely, eternally
perfect.

and of the Holy Ghost, is all one; the

18. WHY THIS MATTERS
The early church worked for
decades
to defend and clarify the essence of
the apostolic faith they had
received,
especially as it relates to the
ESSENTIAL REALITY OF THE
CO-EQUAL/CO-SUBSTANTIAL
DIVINITY OF JESUS as expressed
throughout the New Testament.
19. In the beginning was the Word,
and the Word was with God,
and the Word was God.
He was with God in the
beginning. Through him all
things were made; without him
nothing was made
that has been made.
