30. “Water. The symbolism of water signifies the Holy
Spirit’s action in Baptism…[J]ust as the gestation of
our first birth took place in water, so the water of
Baptism truly signifies that our birth into the divine
life is given to us in the Holy Spirit” (CCC 694).
Water is the most important element in nature: it is
necessary for all life, it was the second thing God
created, after light. It is the element most of us
naturally love the most.

and the difference the Spirit makes to understanding
