Introduction I started the process of seeking an interview about two weeks before the assignment was do. I had email several places and the response
was almost the same for them all. They could only meet with me after the assignment was due. I then remember a small library in the city that I reside
in and that was the Harrison Township PublicLibrary.
The Interview The interview was held Thursday, March 23, 2017 at the Harrison Township Public library. I arrived 15 minutes before 11:00 A.M. and
did last minute question changes before walking into the library. The library is quite small (perhaps 2000 square feet in total size). I talk to thelibrarian

"Things are getting tougher everyday" (2017) for librarians and that to make a living as a librarian (which in his eyes is working fulltime) "you
have to move where the jobs are... and you have to love what you do..." (2017). His reasoning is that because it's getting harder, you have to love it
to keep pushing on for that living to be a possibility. He also said that networking is also a very big key that I need to start as soon as possible. "Get
your name and accomplishments out there" and to "make contacts" (2017) not just for networking (which is important) but for day–to–day advice.
Conclusion
Overall, I learned much with my time with the Director of the Harrison Public Library, Dan Hutchins. He was a man on integrity and compassion
for his field and gave me important insights on how it could be for me one day as a manager or leader in the librarian field. It's a tough world and this

The History Of The Library Profession
John Ambrosio (2013), reflecting on the history of the library profession, invokes Antonio Gramsci, who said that a critical understanding of the self
also requires the development of an ethical stance, a set of values, principles, and virtues to guide one's moral conduct (Ambrosio, 2013, p. 328).
Lacking such ethics or praxis, librarians are vulnerable to the dominant political ideology. "The way to overcome paralysis is the consciousness of what
one really is and knowing oneself. It begins with taking an inventory of our historical formation with determining how we have been secretly imprinted
by history; how our language, thoughts and identities have been informed by various currents of philosophical thought and cultural practices" (Gramsci
in Ambrosio, 2013, p. 328). By examining the history of the library profession – a history that conflates neutrality with equality and democracy, staffed
by a cadre of professionals who trace their beginnings to a theory of "library economy" – it is easy to imagine how neoliberal ideology found a home in
the library.
Many theorists recognize the fact that librarians have the potential to make progressive reforms to society (Raber, 2003, p. 47), if they would only
break free of the "contradictory theoretical consciousness" and hegemonic norms that hold them back from doing so by suggesting that they should
take no action (Bales & Engle, 2012, p. 22). Louis Althusser (2009), in particular felt that librarians had a "social and moral

Libraries are an important resource, both to those who use them and to the area in which they reside. Over the years, libraries have changed from
being simple repositories of printed books and materials. Instead, libraries now are home to ever changing technologies, community meeting rooms,
areas in which children can participate in a variety of activities, and a multitude of other things, in addition to the previously housed print materials. As
the Carnegie libraries of the past, and other libraries, begin to become less well–suited to the mission of the modern library, it is possible that many
library directors may find themselves in a position of being asked to plan a new building. This is a multi–faceted process which must be carefully
considered in order to be a success. While there is no such thing as a perfect library, one which has been carefully thought out and well–designed may
more easily gain acceptance by the community. Steps which must be taken are a consideration of problems with the existing building, the creation of a
building team, a thorough assessment of needs, a determination of how much space is needed, selection of site location, the design of the library, and a

During this phase, the interns will be introduced to the employees of Inspiration Space and the library that are associated with different departments in
the Wilmington Public Library. This short term session will help the interns and new employees in understanding the architecture of the library system

The company's website was also reviewed during this meeting. A formal document was handed to the interns for providing the detailed information
related to the company's manuals and policies. All the interns and new employees were requested to submit all their documents to the Human Resource

Library Donation Books
This summer I spent hours on the library's third floor, a large area used for storage since the 1970's; no air conditioning but lots of dust. I sorted
through 177 boxes of books that were donated to the library. Library staff are not following the current donation policy and all donated books are
given to the Friends Book Sale. Many books in my Adult Fiction section are in well–loved condition with water damage, broken spines and torn pages.
Sorting through the boxes led to the addition of 300 adult fiction titles not owed by the library, example added a new copy of Odd Thomas by Dean
Koontz. The donation books were used to replace 450 "loved books" with newer copies, example replaced a water damaged, broken spine copy of The
Nightingale by Kristin Hannah with a brand new copy. My frustration leads me to search for information about how to handle book donations in a
public library. I searched the Library and Information Source link on Clarion's online library page using the term "handling gift or donated books". I
selected Kay Ann Cassell's article "Handling gift books in libraries: A view from the US." Cassell's article provides an overview of guidelines to be
used in creating a gift book policy. A gift or donated book policy should be part of the library's Collection Development policy. Library staff are able to

Rural Libraries And Public Libraries
Rural libraries provide an information access point to those who live in remote areas. To define, rural libraries are critical instruments for service
areas of 25,00 or less. The social economic life of population groups trend towards lower income and poverty. These forces constrict and curtail patrons
abilities for education, self– improvement and access to variety of information platforms.
In the course of this effort we will provide a brief survey of challenges that rural libraries experience. We will convey patterns from computer network

and established in September 30, 1996. The program has been in existence for the past twenty years and was incorporated by Legislation. The IMLS

The Reflection Of The Library Space In The University
The space that we chose to explore was the library. As students within the university, we use the library space on a daily basis. "Space speak of being,
belonging, and becoming" (Australian Government Department of Education Employment and Workplace Relations, 2009, as cited in Giamminuti,
2013, p. 52). The library is a space that we are familiar with and expected to be comfortable with. It is a space where students can find books, study,
collaborate, use computers, and print materials. Our understanding of the library is limited to it being a quiet, respected, and organized space.
However, we instead, wanted to explore the unfamiliar, the unexpected, and uncomfortable aspects of the library. We'd like to explore its "volumes,
colours, light, sounds, and smells" and be in dialogue with these matters (Reggio Children, 2011).
The entrance to the library played a huge role on how we understand this place. We had expectations, from previous experience, of how the library will
be. According to Giamminuti (2013), "what one feels and views when entering a school can influence what one then perceives as one's role within that
school, one's relationship to others, and what one eventually comes to know about the school" (p. 53).
These doors reminded us of the expectations it held upon. As soon as you enter the library, theatmosphere suddenly changes.

In reading through Management Basics for Information Professionals by Evans and Ward, one of the theories of management that stood out to me
was the "administrative approach" (2007). Henry Fayol was one of the main proponents of this approach, though there were many others as well.
Fayol "divided organizational activities into five major groups" and also identified 14 principles of management and believed that "management is a

Another of Fayol's principles had to do with authority and responsibility. In the department of the main stacks, there was a staff librarian who acted
as our manager, as well as a group of students that performed supervisory tasks. In my last year or so in the library I joined this group, and was given
the task of doing some of the day–to–day tasks that kept our department running. These included opening and closing procedures, keeping statistics of
the work done by students, assigning hourly jobs, training, and so on. The important idea in this principle is that "giving orders and being
responsible must go together" (Evans & Ward, 2007). I would argue that in our department, while we were responsible for making sure the work
was done as well as assigning jobs, if there was a difficult situation the supervisors were able to refer to the staff librarian for support. For example,
if one student was chronically underperforming or late, we would notify the librarian. If one considered the group of supervisors plus the librarian
who managed us to make up the "management" of the department, then in whole authority and responsibility did go together. I would also say that
instead of thinking of student supervisors as not being as responsible as they could be, it would be more plausible to say that the hourly assignment of
jobs and other such tasks were ones that were delegated to them by the librarian, because while he was more responsible, there was no way that he could

Factors Affecting the Decline in Aging Children
The early teen reading slump has been noted by researchers. Researchers have consistently found that pleasure reading increases throughout
childhood and begins to decline, usually at age twelve to thirteen. Howard, V. (2009). Unfortunately, few researchers have explored the specific
reasons for this decline from the perspective of teens themselves. Even fewer still have explored the role that reading for pleasure plays in the lives
of young teens. Public libraries focus simultaneously on improving services to teen patrons and to pleasure readers of all ages as key to strategies
to maintain importance and competitive advantage in the "age of Google." (p. 298). One of the most significant barriers in the reading decline is
difficulties selecting appealing reading materials. (p.299). This particular study was collected using focus group questions with 249 completed
surveys out of the 900 sent to junior high school students. There were several factors that effected teen reading and usage of library services. Teens
did not view library staff as a useful source of readers' advisory. Teens describe their lives as very busy, leaving little time to read for pleasure. In this
study, many teens note that they have more homework that elementary school, but also more freedom to socialize. Teens describe their dislike of

Public Libraries and Technology
There are myriad ways a child may develop a love of reading, however in the modern era it seems that this passion and hunger for not only
knowledge but for the pure enjoyment derived from it has been all but lost. I have children of my own that are not old enough to begin to
approach about this and most other children I see are too endeavored with their tablets, videogames and social media to be concerned with it. I can
therefore only speak from the one common frame of reference I have and that is myself. In doing so, I will inform you of just how a child may develop

I had a wonderful incentive in the form of a persistent grandmother whom would always shut the television off and put a book in my hands. I claimed
that I hated the time it took having to read these boringly annoying things called words in no less an object made out of paper, but the experience
began to far outweigh the reservations I had about the activity at hand. I was started off with books based on real life events. Not very interesting to
a child indeed, but one aspect of children is their curiosity and desire to know more, inquiring about the hows and whys of things, the way they are,
who was that and where did they come from. My own thirst for knowledge not only grew but expanded beyond the simple trappings of my

Term Project – Archive Visit The archive I am visiting for this term project is the Local History & Archives of the Hamilton Public Library located on
the third floor of the Central Branch at 55 York Boulevard in Hamilton, Ontario. Since 1914, Hamilton Public Library has been collecting and
preserving Hamilton 's history. The Local History & Archives collection consists of material such as letters, photographs, manuscripts, diaries and other
original records created by Hamilton and area citizens. There are records of local businesses and organizations, family papers, government records of
the City of Hamilton and the County of Wentworth, military records, theatrical collections, music collections, ephemera, etc. Thisarchive visit took
place on November 16th 2016.
According to their website the mandate of the Local History & Archives collection has five main goals. The first is that the Local History & Archives
collection exists to "collect and preserve materials which illustrate the growth and development of Hamilton–Wentworth, both before and after

For my first school library teacher observation, I observed Ms. Gallo–Toth at Brookline Public School's John D. Runkle Elementary School. According
to the Brookline Public Schools website (PSBMA) Website– Runkle School, para.3) is a K–8 school that has about 560 students. The Runkle School is
also a host to many Spanish English Language Learner students as well as the Reaching Independence through Structured Education program for
children on the autistic spectrum. I observed Ms. Gallo–Toth introduce the library to sixth grade students as well as visit kindergarten classrooms to
become acquainted with the kindergartners before their formal visit to the library. Furthermore, I observed an author and illustrator visit to first and
second graders at the Martin Sleeper Library at the John D. Runkle School that derived from collaboration between Ms. Gallo–Toth and a local
independent bookstore. Moreover, I increased my understanding of how a school library teacher employs collaboration and flexibility to administer
the school library program. The culmination of my observations of Ms. Gallo–Toth highlighted how school library teachers have many roles within the
school such as instruction, collaboration, promoting literacy, and as the school library program administrator.

"People may go to the library looking mainly for information, but they find each other there." To clarify what is said, people may use the library for
