Source Evaluation Research Paper
Source Evaluation In writing a research paper, the hunt for creditable sources to use can be difficult. However, if one knows how to evaluate a source
and deem it acceptable for college–level work, then it will make it easier to find sources to use. Many professors will reject sources if they are not
academically acceptable, like advertisement websites and celebrity magazines, so it is important to look for sources produced by professional. Also,
check the professional's credentials, degrees, and knowledge. To determine if asource is creditable one must evaluate a source using a certain set of
guidelines, in doing so a student can become good at sorting out the acceptable from the unacceptable. In evaluating a source, one needs to have three
things for a general evaluation, which is author qualifications, accessibility to the source, and the information that is going to help one from it. ... Show

Open Sources Software : Open Source Software Layer
This section is the second layer of OS–SDB that is about open source software layer. The Open Source Initiative's definition of open source software is:
"software that must be distributed under a license that guarantees the right to read, redistribute, modify, and use the software freely" [20]. "OSS is
developed, tested, or improved through public collaboration and distributed with the idea that the must be shared with others, ensuring an open future
collaboration"[21]. The definition of open source software provides the essential requirements of software to be open source that are (1) distribution
(2) under license (3) public sharing (4) tested and improved the development. The SDB system development is tested and improved as article [1] stated
how they built SDB system prototype and tested. The following illustrate the prototype components in details: the batteries emulator model and the

Biased Sources
It is important to add sources when they provide information that will help you make your point. There are two instances that make using sources
appropriate; one is in research papers, the other is in essays. In research papers, your thesis and ideas are original, but sources are useful to back up
your claims. Using sources in this way gives your paper a strong wall of evidence to base your ideas on. In other essays, you can use sources to add
detail, which makes your thesis more solid. These sources can add statistics, evidence, illustrations, and historical information.
It is important to differentiate between facts, opinions, and bias when choosing sources because opinions and bias can be false or misleading. A factual
source is usually the best type of source for a paper because it is concrete and can be checked for verification. Opinions, on the other hand, can not
be verified because they are beliefs. Unless it is an opinion made by an expert, you should not use opinions as sources because they can be false.
Bias is the writer's personal view about a subject and may be distorted. Biased sources aren't always wrong, but if you use one, add other sources with
differing views. At its worst, bias can be misleading and cause the audience to have a one–sided view of the subject.

With note cards, you can write each source down on an index card with its author, location, summary notes, paraphrases, and direct quotes. The
advantage of this system is that you can go back later and rearrange your information, but the disadvantage is that you have to handwrite everything.
The second way to organize information is by using annotated source copies. These are made by photocopying or printing out sources and then adding
underlines and marginal notes. This method saves time by copying and pasting material, but can be a disadvantage because you can not rearrange your

Essay on Wikipedia as a Reliable Source
Wikipedia is a collaborative resource, which aims to be a compendium of all human knowledge. In a serious examination of Wikipedia as a credible
and valid source of information we need to place our argument within a definable framework. As I will show information has many uses, for the
purposes of this paper I will examine the use of Wikipedia for scholarly research, the kind, which I will be utilizing throughout the rest of my MBA
program. I will be evaluating Wikipedia based on the parameters set forth by Brenda Spatt. The credentials, Impartiality, style/tone, and currency of
Wikipedia will all be examined in this paper (Spatt 2011).
Its name comes from the derivatives of two words. Wiki, from "the Hawaiian word Wikiwiki meaning ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Proponents of Wikipedia might suggest that amateurs often make important contributions to fields outside of their profession. Astronomers, Bird
watchers and, Historians are often outshined by discoveries made by Amateurs. However once the discovery is made it is the professionals who then
validate and confirm that information something that doesn't happen on Wikipedia. The might also reference the unofficial policy of citing original
sources as a way of validating the information. "Wikipedia is not a publisher of original thought or research"(Logan, D.W. p1)
Impartiality should be an area where Wikipedia really flourishes. With so many voices contributing to the ultimate output individual biases and
cultural perspectives would be rounded over and neutralized. One of the five pillars Wikipedians (what contributors call themselves) are expected to
follow is not sharing unpublished results or promoting their personal theories. This sounds very noble but these are amateurs, people who by
definition are passionate about a topic. If you are so passionate about a given subject that you donate you time and knowledge how can you be
impartial even if you try. "All articles in Wikipedia should be impartial in tone and content" (Logan, D.W. p2)
The elephant in the room that I haven't addressed is vandalism. In this instance vandalism refers to the act of knowingly submitting false

Sources Of Credibility
Research papers are a part of every student's life. Some students may like the research papers but the others may not. But in the end a decent
research paper would be the sources that make the paper credible. A lot of articles are not credible due to some areas. The areas include: the
credibility of the author, the sources that were cited throughout the paper, how reliable the content is and a reliable publisher also how current and
how accessible the article is. The author would be credible by being knowledgeable about the topic being spoken about. Furthermore, for the author to
be credible, the author would have to be adding some outside sources that will give the article more credibility. Not only would the sources would

Sources Of Diversity In Films
When doing research for my topic, Diversity in Films, I came across many sources. The first source that I found was a scholarly journal named,
Teaching Sociology. The journal, that was written by Mari Dagaz and Brent Harger, had a short segment about diversity in films. One of the main
points that stood out was one about how women and minorities are portrayed in films. It stated that women and minorities in film are usually
"underrepresented and based on traditional stereotypes." This point is what I believe is one of the strengths of this source. This is because that short
segment allowed me to think about my topic more and opened my eyes to what I really needed to look for. Although, the fact that it did not
specify a certain minority nor give examples would be a weakness of the source. The fact that the journal did not give good examples of the lack of
diversity in films, would be considered the sources "weak" trait. If the journal would have given an example of a stereotype that is used or an
example of how women and minorities are portrayed, it would have made the journal a lot stronger. But, since it did not, it caused me to have to look
to other sources that would give me some kind of example. So the article basically forced me to have to look to other places that provided the

minorities and women are falling behind at the box office. What is meant is that they are not being represented as much in big blockbusters. A strength
from this article is that it actually gave statistical information about the topic it was presenting. For example, when talking about a minority lead in
feature films, it states that in 2013 it dropped from 16.7% to 12.3%. Even though it features good statistical values, that article did have a downside to

Source Code Essay
There are several definition of source code, which makes regulating it difficult because different regulators may have varying conceptions of just what
it is, and as a result, what kinds of rules should attach to it.
The general definition of source code that most people acknowledge is "the version of software as it is originally written by a human in plain text" (
Source Code). According to this definition, code is written by humans in order to create software, which can be any operating system, program or
data with a processor. The average person can see that the source code would be the code that the software needs in order to function. This is source
code but source code is also much more.
Another definition states holds that source code is "any fully executable description of a software system. It is therefore so construed as to include
machine code, very high level languages and executable graphical representations of systems" (Harman). At first glance, it seems just like the other
definition. However, it only seems that way because we automatically apply the assumption that the "executable description" is the same as the
"version of software" which may not necessarily be the case. The description leads us to believe that the source code does not necessarily have to run
the software but can just be a description for said software. The first definition leads us to believe that the code is that specific software. The second
definition also mentions "machine code" and

Source Bias In Research
What is a Good Source? Most students have written their fair share of papers that require multiple sources from multiple viewpoints. But how do you
know which sources are reliable and which ones to avoid? With the amount of information out there, it is incredibly hard to know what is true or not
or who is being incredibly biased or not.
1.Sources?
According to the University of Illinois, different sources are better for different topics, it states that Newspapers are better for "Daily local, national,
and international news, events, and editorial coverage" (Select the Best Information Source, n.d.). While Scholarly or Academic Journals are better for
"Recent research on a topic" and" Focused, peer–reviewed articles written by experts" (Select the Best Information Source, n.d.). Check the references
page, the amount and quality of a references page means so much when it comes to determining whether a source is credible. Do they have any

If bias is there, and you don't spot it, you might have a source that contradicts the other, which makes you less credible. Bias can change how an article
is written and can obscure the truth of the information that is there. If there is a bias towards a certain party then the article might obscure the
negatives of one party and only list negatives of the other, which would not be telling lies necessarily, but would not be telling the full truth, which can
make for a slanted paper about the subject. Which makes you a source that is unreliable, and that causes the reader to question the paper that you are
writing, which usually isn't good. Sources without bias are usually more reliable because they usually tell the whole store and not just one side of

Primary Source Analysis
Primary sources are original source created or compiled during an observation or event. These documents are raw materials which provide first–hand
accounts or direct evidence about a topic under the examination. Primary sources, according to William Kelleher Storey in Writing History: A Guide
for Students, "originate in the time period that historian are studying and vary a great deal." Primary source documents can help reconstruct a particular
event that happened in the past. For example, if someone is interested on landmark U.S. Supreme Court cases, he or she would analyze the records
these cases. Primary sources may include but not limited to, memoirs, government documents, autobiographies, government documents, transcripts,
traditions, courtroom testimonies, witness interviews, evidence gathered during investigation, visual, artifacts and archaeological and biological
evidence. "Primary ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Secondary sources are based on interpretation of events and primary source documents being researched. These types of information are created by
people who did not have first–hand knowledge, participate, or experience the events being studied. For the most part, secondary sources are books,
newspapers, magazine and journal articles, and encyclopedias. For example, the book, The Day Wall Street Exploded: A Story of America in Its First
Age of Terror, by Beverly Gage, could be used as asecondary source to learn about the September 1920 vicious explosion of a cluster bombs planted
on a horse–drawn wagon on Wall Street that scythed 38 people. In addition, one of the most interesting aspects of secondary source is that it provides
a researcher an opportunity to broaden his or her research by looking and analyzing works by other scholars on a

Factors to Determine the Validity of Information Sources...
Individuals such as university or high school students are, at one point or another in their studies, faced with the task of having to write a technical
report that involves a research (specifically focused on existing material). There is an abundance of information available in the world today, which
covers a vast amount of fields and all this information is readily available to the public but it is often unclear to these students that all the information
available may not always be credible and actually reliable or even true. The negligence of these students often results in non–factual research papers that
are poorly written up. The failure to check for reliable sources may lead to inadvertent plagiarism too. This report focuses on what makes sources of
information more reliable and credible than others, with a specific focus on research reports.
Readers seek sources of information that is trustworthy. That the creator, author or researcher's ideas are their own is substantiated mainly by evidence.
When given the task to have a research report written up, it usually entails doing research and finding information created by others, this being the case,
it is imperative that credible information should be used. Remember that if your audience has found the source you have cited from as a non–credible
source it could result in the relationship between you and your audience to suffer. There are various factors that determine the validity of a credible
source of information,

USA Today Article: Scholarly Or Popular Source?
When looking at each of the articles presented, there are defining factors that allow researchers to determine whether or not it is a scholarly or
popular resource. Of the two articles, one can assert that the USA Today Article is a popular source and the article by Baker and Algorta (2016) is a
scholarly source. Each of these sources has their advantages and disadvantages due to the stylistic devices employed by the writers. With the help of
each article, knowledge of readers and viewers is expanded, and while there are some facets that detract from the quality of the knowledge gained, the
readers benefits from the time spent reading. In the USA Today article and the article by Baker and Algorta (2016), one can use their differences to

Since the vocabulary of the popular source is so simplistic, it caters to a more general audience and allows them to grasp the more important aspects of
the Baker and Algorta article that was summarized. As the reader is allowed to gain this knowledge, there is a broadening of information that effects
the general population. Since the general public is able to grasp this information, it makes it more accessible to those that would not normally come
across scholarly articles that alienate those who are not researchers or students. While the article has simplistic language and makes the information
more accessible, there are disadvantages. The article lacks citation which makes the information that the public is able to receive less credible. Since
the information is less credible, it makes the information that the public receives more easily misconstrued. Alongside the lack of credibility, there is
too much general information. The information that the public receives lacks a large amount of context that allows readers to gather more detailed and
nuanced information that coexists with the research provided. Due to the nature of a popular source, less background knowledge of the subject is
required; however, there is more opportunity for wrong information, for it is brief and can often be

Open Source Philosophy
The History and Philosophy of Open Source
The open source movement was born in 1984, at the MIT Artificial Intelligence Lab when Richard M. Stallman quit his position at the university to
begin the GNU Project. Having grown tired of seeing his colleagues being hired off by corporations and signing nondisclosure agreements for their
work, he set off to create a completely free, open operating system. Though he specialized in the field, building such a system from the ground up is
nearly impossible for a single person; thus, he began with a more attainable goal, creating a C compiler. Though he was successful in this, he never
managed to create a kernel (the core of an operating system), aside from GNU Hurd, of which we do not speak. Fortunately for the movement, one
would later emerge with a similar philosophy. Around 1991, the GNU Project had amassed a respectable number of software packages, including the
widely used GCC and Emacs, though it still lacked the core, a kernel. Then, more than six thousand kilometers away, a twenty–one–year–old Finnish
university student began developing a small, open source system as a hobby. Once the open source community became interested in it, what started as a
small project capable of little more than displaying text quickly morphed into one of the most widely–distributed pieces of software in history,
containing more than twenty million lines of code, contributed to by tens of thousands of developers across the globe, and with

Importance Of Credible Sources
A source is the place or resource in which knowledge has been obtained. When looking for sources to use in a research paper you need to be able to
determine whether or not a source is reliable and credible. It is important to use reliable and credible sources so that the information you use in a
document you are writing is accurate and will not affect you in a negative way, by either getting a bad grade in school or just looking unintelligent to a

When using ethos you create a sense of authority to the reader that what you are saying is reliable. For example, in commercials athletes advertise
athletic products, while models advertise beauty products. This shows a reader that professional people in a certain field backup a product in a
positive way. Ethos is also used when someone uses actions that a person has completed in the past, to help persuade people that they have
experience and are reliable. When using logos you can cite statistics, analogies, and historical context about a topic to show you are a credible
source and that the information you are using can be proven with evidence. It enhances a rational and fact based reasoning on a topic. If you use
pathos and appeal to the more emotional side of a topic, a reader could immediately identify your source as bias, as it uses a human's sense of emotion
to get someone to agree with a topic.
A credible and reliable source can be determined through characteristics in spelling/grammar, citations and examples used within a document, and
the author. Once a reliable and credible source has been identified you can use it in any research paper that will help improve your skills as a writer,
and make your writing as reliable as the sources that allowed you to write it. When creating a reliable and credible source use ethos and logos to help
support your claim, to enhance your authority and provide logical

Primary Source Vs Secondary Source Analysis
The major differences that exist between primary source and secondary source authors are its reliability and credibility. Secondary source authors hold
certain disadvantages in that the authors did not directly experience the actual event, meaning that they do not have a first–hand account of the
experience that occurred. Because these secondary source authors were not affected, their information could contain inaccurate data, or their opinions
askew due to their lack of a direct experience. Although secondary sources may have their disadvantages, secondary source authors have the ability to
analyze, interpret, evaluate, and synthesize the original events and data that could not be done initially due to time constraints. With the ability to
analyze statistics and documents, authors can construct explanations and justifications as to why these events arose. ... Show more content on

Certain kinds of archeological sources which have writing on them – inscriptions, coins, and insribed images – can be considered both material objects
and texts". But the classification of sources has been only relative. In the scope of my study, I would like to solely stress on written sources based
on 2 main parts which are as follows: Firstly, written sources of early Indian history ( ideas, knowledge and the way of analyzing and criticizing these
sources); Secondly, a typical example of written sources in early Indian history (the method of exploiting and evaluating Arthashastra of Kautilya as

scholars have asserted that the invention of writing is a miracle for the study of histories of countries, especially ancient Indian history. Professor

Cincinnatus Primary Sources
Primary sources are typically original documents that offer an inside view of that particular event. This primary source is a picture of a statute
which allows us to assume that it's to represent a hero of some sort, so he was an important figure in his time. We can also assume the time period
based on his clothing; the clothes he has on can be associated with a time way before any of us were born. Upon other research, I have concluded that
this statue is of Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus, who was a historical figure in Rome. In this essay, I will explain the importance of this primary source.
Based on this picture, or primary source, we can assume that the figure shown is a hero or a respected person in society. This person obviously
was part of a higher level of society, judging by the fact that he has a statue made of him to allow his legacy to live. Statues usually signal some
form of legacy or something that should be recognized. Based on my extra research, I have found out that Cincinnatus is said to have won a war
against an entire army in one day, and triumphed over Rome. He then proceeded to resign and go back to his small farm. He was a hard–working
civilian who took over as dictator for a short time to help out and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I think this statue is meant to show Cincinnatus' victory and short dictatorship over Rome as well as his first attachment to his farm. The statue is
trying to convey a message of being a hard–working leader and citizen. The ax in one hand symbolizes his power he has as the dictator, and he may
be holding it out as a symbol of handing down his powers, while his other hand holds a plow, which attaches him to his farm. Cincinnatus' legacy is
meant to show that a true, loyal citizen won't let anything stop him from helping his city when needed. I believe the intended audience of this statue is
whoever needs a reminder and an example to live by to be an upright, loyal

Student Referencing: Scholarly Sources
Referencing is an important part of academic writing it demonstrates that credible articles are being used and it also assists the student in avoiding
plagiarism. This case study will critique the reference list of a student's assessment showing how one of the reference used is from a scholarly source
while also demonstrating how another article is from a non–scholarly source. This will be done by using evidence to support these choices this includes
methods such as explaining primary and secondary research articles, taking note of the currency, assessing whether the author is from a reputable

Battle Of The Somme: Source Analysis
Finally, Source E also disagrees with the statement. In this source we can see British soldiers holding fixed bayonets, attacking the Germans at
Thiepval–Chateau .We can also notice soldiers who have been shot, explosions going on in the background and barbed wire between no mans land and
the trenches; these all create an accurate representation of the circumstances whilst fighting the battle. Most importantly, we can see a German man on
the right, standing with his arms raised, surrendering. This is a key reason why this source does not portray the battle as a disaster. It is because a man
giving up and essentially handing the win to the other side, shows Britain had done something which caused Germany's plan to 'bleed France white', to
backfire. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Four out of the five sources disagree with the statement even though Source C is quite open to interpretation. In my opinion the most useful source
was Source D. This is because it gave information which speaks about the first day from a perspective that we don't usually see. Though this could be
seen as bias, it is actually the most informative regarding how it went for the British. The source uses specific details which cannot be picked up in the
other sources and it also shows reasoning as the battle went in our favour. On the other hand, we have Source C which to me was the least useful.
This is because it was a propaganda film which made it unreliable. It was also not very trustworthy because when compared to other sources prior
knowledge, there are so many inaccuracies within it. Even then, unlike Source E which may also be a form of propaganda, there is not much that
can be deduced from Source C. This source has an inaccurate portrayal of the battle conditions and it only shows soldiers 'going over the top'. Each
one of the sources tells us different things as a result of their origin, nature and purpose. I think that it is mainly the purpose which impacts they

Source Anonymous Research Paper
Sit tight for the journey ahead as I explain to you, on my coffee–induced, sleep–deprived binge–writing, the ethics of source anonymity in
journalism–for the purpose of this paper, I will be writing about Canada specifically. More specifically, I will touch upon the following: What is the
reliability of the source? Why would a source have to be kept anonymous? To what extent does a journalist keep a source confidential? Firstly, I will
go on to briefly describe the Canadian Act that protects whistle–blowers (the term used to describe someone who brings an issue to light, almost always
in their organization) and the shield law. Next, I will be discussing the ethics in keeping a source anonymous from the utilitarian point of view, as well as
... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As stated in the CAJ Ethics Guidelines, under Promises to Sources, it is important to discuss with a source wanting to be kept anonymous whether
or not you, as a journalist, are willing to go to jail for keeping them anonymous when ordered by a court. It is important to discuss with your source
that, if they mislead or lie to you about anything they say, the promise of keeping their anonymity is off. There have been many cases of journalists
going to jail for keeping a source anonymous, even in the face of the law. If this doesn't show principle, then I don't know what does. There is also the
aspect of acting from duty: a journalist has the duty of reporting to the public in order for them to know the truth about what's happening in the world.
The right thing to do is to keep the source anonymous if it means that an important story or high–classified information will be out for the public to
know–it is their right to know. In this perspective, a journalist does not look at their personal consequences–possible incarceration–but on the nature of
their action to liberate the truth. They have the good intention, which makes it deontological. If we take a look at the first form of the categorical
imperatives, it follows this as well because of the way they act: keeping a promise they made. A journalist also has true freedom because they have the
autonomy to put themselves in a position of being in a bad situation with the law, using their rationality to weigh the options of leaking a good story or
the possibility of suffering consequences for

Can people get credible sources from internet? Yes, they can. However, many people do not know how to identify whether the sources are fake or not.
In general, the old people and young people are just starting to use the internet; they are getting confused with those informations. Some informations
can earn old people and young people's trust eventhough the informations are fake. This essay will teach people how to get credible sources from the
internet. Before people learn how to identify the credible sources, they have to understand what the credible source really means. Here is a way how
people comprehend the credible sources. Undoubtedly, people always focus on the surface of the things so the credible source to them seems like the
information which they can believe. Also, here is a definition from Urban Dictionary. It says," Someone or something whose words, ideas or notions

Discuss the reliability of source to a historian studying the experiences of Australians at World War I during the Gallipoli campaign
Source A is highly reliable for a historian studying the experiences of Australians at Gallipoli as it is a first person account of many aspects of the
experience and highly corroborates with our own knowledge of the first days at Gallipoli. Source A is a diary entry by Ellis Silas, dated 11th of May
1915, therefore it is highly reliable as it is a primary and first person account of the sixteenth day at Gallipoli. In addition, the author has most likely
written the content, recalling the events still vivid in the his head which allows the chance for the author to write in immense detail. For example,
"noise of the incessant crackling of rifles and screaming of shrapnel" allows the audience to visualise and understand the conditions of the day due to
the author's use of descriptive language. Furthermore, the diary entry is published on a website organised by the government, therefore it is a source
that the government have examined and approved of, increasing its reliability. The majority of the diary entry is reflective of what the audience know
about the first few weeks of the war such as the immense number of losses, which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Credible Sources
In the 21st century, credible sources are a crucial preliminary element to back up ideas and arguments in the preparation of academic writing and
research as well as an opportunity to learn how to communicate in the computerised world. Credible sources play a significant role in academic
writing to show the above board demonstration of your academic work (Swinburne Online, n.d.). Many people struggle to evaluate online information
and opinions available and it difficult to discern credible online sources (Amsbary & Powell, 2003; Meola, 2004; Metzger, Flanagin, Eyal, et al., 2003;
Scholz–Crane, 1998). Returning to study after a long break is hard for me, but using the credible sources will help me academically. Credible
sources are beneficial for me as a tertiary learner to enable me not to plagiarise in my assessments and to be able to learn from experts in the field.
Reliable sources help me to use the information to learn successfully, raise new knowledge, work around problems and make judgements (Bundy, 2004).

Is Discernment A Good Source?
Discernment Discernment is the idea of judgement and the idea of knowing and being able to derive right from wrong. In today's society this is a very
week characteristic and is something that everyone needs improvement on. The media, technology, and idea of absolute truth guide us into thinking
and believing that everything we see and hear is correct and valid. But this is no way to live and no way to derive information and ultimately
understand the world. Throughout today's society there are many ways to gather information, and the quickest and easiest way to get access to this
information is through the internet. The internet is the fastest source in the palm of our hands, which can be used to do wonderful things and spread
valuable news or it can also be used to spread false and misleading information. There are many online news websites used that can be very reliable
such as CNN which is just one example of a very reliable source. One way to easily depict a good source from a bad source online is the type of
publishers and also the type of website for finding information. For example, finding a topic off of Wikipedia compared to a topic off of a
government based website is probably not the best source of information. Having a reliable source such as the government or other sources is
something we can trust, rather than a website where any individual can change the content. Secondly, gathering information from fellow peers and
individuals is also another useful way to

Critically Analyzing Sources for Research
During college, students should be able to research and analyze their sources. It is an important life skill. By using the ability to research, they can find
articles with credible, reliable, and relevant information to get the best and dependable research. People who use these techniques will find each of
these components essential to the authenticity of an article. These skills would be able to help students and researchers discover trustworthy and
reliable sources. Each of the different components in a quality research makes it solid and dependable. Credibility is how believable or truthful the
research, and whether the researchers have the credentials to do research in that area. Reliability is the reputation of the article's source, and if the
authors considered any biases. Relevancy is how current the article is or how important it is now. Students conducting research in college need to be
able to critically analyze sources for credibility, relevancy, and reliability in order to determine their usefulness in a research paper.
The first step in finding a credible article is looking for credentials and qualifications of the authors. Each of the three authors of this article has the
credentials and qualifications to write about this subject. The three researchers of this article are Zhengchuan Xu, Qing Hu, and Chenghong Zhang.

Summary Of The Naked Source By Linda Simon
Every decent argument is backed by evidence. In "The Naked Source," Linda Simon argues that students should learn history by interpreting primary
sources. Simon supports her argument that students should confront primary sources to better learn history by using ethos, logos, structure, and tone.
Simon uses ethos as evidence to support her argument that students should learn history by interpreting primary sources. The introduction in "The
Naked Source" indicates that Simon "earned a doctorate in English and American literature from Brandeis University and is currently professor of
English at Skidmore College" (250). This information establishes her credibility, or ethos, as a current teacher. It also makes her a reliable source since
she is not just some uneducated person advertising for her own benefit. She is a teacher that drew her conclusions through observing her students in the
classroom. Simon's ethos supports her argument because she is a trustworthy source. Most of Simon's arguments also apply to logic; they make logical
sense. Simon says "Students, of course, can never discover the boundary between "fact" and imaginative construction unless they have contact with
primary sources" (253). Here, Simon uses logos as part of her evidence to explain to her ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She carries the audience through her argument in a logical sequence. First, she makes her claim that student do not know history and explains her
reasons (250). She then elaborates on what history students are taught and what exactly is wrong with the methods by which they learn (251). After
this, she explains the job of a historian to the reader – how historians confront primary sources to "make some sense of what once happened" (252). To
end the article, Simon describes how students can better learn history through exploring primary sources (253). This structuring and organization helps
the reader to understand and to believe Simon's

Is Open Source Software?
In fact, all the mottoes of free software development have their counterparts in the theory of democracy and open society; "with enough eyeballs, all
bugs are shallow" is merely the most obvious example. Karl Popper would have cheered.57 The importance of open–source software is not that it
introduces us to a wholly new idea; it is that it makes us see clearly a very old idea. With open source the technology was novel, the production process
was transparent, and the result of that process was a "product" which out–competed other products in the marketplace. "How can this have happened?
What about the tragedy of the commons?" we asked in puzzlement, coming only slowly to the realization that other examples of commons–based,

These are all guesses, however. At the very least, there is some possibility, even hope, that we could have a world in which much more of intellectual
and inventive production is free. "'Free' as in 'free speech,'" Richard Stallman says, not "'free' as in 'free beer.'"61 But we could hope that much of it
would be both free of centralized control and low cost or no cost. When the marginal cost of production is zero, the marginal cost of transmission and
storage approaches zero, the process of creation is additive, and much of the labor doesn't charge–well, the world looks a little different.62 This is at
least a possible future, or part of a possible future, and one that we should not foreclose without thinking twice. Yet that is what we are doing. The
Database Protection Bills and Directives, which extend intellectual property rights to the layer of facts;63 the efflorescence of software patents;64 the
UCITA–led validation of shrink wrap licenses that bind third parties;65 the Digital Millennium Copyright Act's anti–circumvention provisions66 – the
point of all of these developments is not merely that they make the peer–to peer model difficult, but that in many cases they rule it out altogether. The
free software and open–source software movements have produced software that rivals and, many would say, exceeds the capabilities of conventional
proprietary, binary–only software. 52 Its adoption on the "enterprise level" is impressive, as is the number and

Primary Source Analysis
Primary sources refer to accounts of events that are written by an eye witness who witness that particular event. These documents are more often
letters, memoirs, diaries, speeches, interviews, journals and other unpublished works of people who witness events. Primary sources may also
include pieces such as magazine articles; newspapers and other published pieces as long as they were written as soon as the event took place. The
secondary sources on the other hand play the role of interpreting the primary sources. It is for this reason that they can be described as having at least
one step eliminated from the event in question. Secondary sources will assign value to, interpret and conjecture upon the events reported in the primary
sources.

This question is important because there are still holocaust survivors alive today, and their stories are arguably the ones that teach us he most about
the Holocaust, since they are primary sources of the event. The survivors dealt with a lot of physical and emotional trauma while in the camps, so it
would be easy for them to procure PTSD. The mental illness PTSD can make it harder for the survivors to talk about certain events, because it could

Source Evaluation Research Paper

  • 1. Source Evaluation Research Paper Source Evaluation In writing a research paper, the hunt for creditable sources to use can be difficult. However, if one knows how to evaluate a source and deem it acceptable for college–level work, then it will make it easier to find sources to use. Many professors will reject sources if they are not academically acceptable, like advertisement websites and celebrity magazines, so it is important to look for sources produced by professional. Also, check the professional's credentials, degrees, and knowledge. To determine if asource is creditable one must evaluate a source using a certain set of guidelines, in doing so a student can become good at sorting out the acceptable from the unacceptable. In evaluating a source, one needs to have three things for a general evaluation, which is author qualifications, accessibility to the source, and the information that is going to help one from it. ... The Open Source Initiative's definition of open source software is: "software that must be distributed under a license that guarantees the right to read, redistribute, modify, and use the software freely" [20]. "OSS is developed, tested, or improved through public collaboration and distributed with the idea that the must be shared with others, ensuring an open future collaboration"[21]. The definition of open source software provides the essential requirements of software to be open source that are (1) distribution (2) under license (3) public sharing (4) tested and improved the development. The SDB system development is tested and improved as article [1] stated how they built SDB system prototype and tested. The following illustrate the prototype components in details: the batteries emulator model and the SDB hardware emulator (prototype) are integrated into the OS (for devices instrumented with power meters) using 4,800 lines of code across modules written in C#, Python and Matlab. • 3. Biased Sources It is important to add sources when they provide information that will help you make your point. There are two instances that make using sources appropriate; one is in research papers, the other is in essays. In research papers, your thesis and ideas are original, but sources are useful to back up your claims. Using sources in this way gives your paper a strong wall of evidence to base your ideas on. In other essays, you can use sources to add detail, which makes your thesis more solid. These sources can add statistics, evidence, illustrations, and historical information. It is important to differentiate between facts, opinions, and bias when choosing sources because opinions and bias can be false or misleading. A factual source is usually the best type of source for a paper because it is concrete and can be checked for verification. Opinions, on the other hand, can not be verified because they are beliefs. Unless it is an opinion made by an expert, you should not use opinions as sources because they can be false. Bias is the writer's personal view about a subject and may be distorted. Biased sources aren't always wrong, but if you use one, add other sources with differing views. At its worst, bias can be misleading and cause the audience to have a one–sided view of the subject. With note cards, you can write each source down on an index card with its author, location, summary notes, paraphrases, and direct quotes. The advantage of this system is that you can go back later and rearrange your information, but the disadvantage is that you have to handwrite everything. The second way to organize information is by using annotated source copies. These are made by photocopying or printing out sources and then adding underlines and marginal notes. This method saves time by copying and pasting material, but can be a disadvantage because you can not rearrange your material ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Essay on Wikipedia as a Reliable Source Wikipedia is a collaborative resource, which aims to be a compendium of all human knowledge. In a serious examination of Wikipedia as a credible and valid source of information we need to place our argument within a definable framework. As I will show information has many uses, for the purposes of this paper I will examine the use of Wikipedia for scholarly research, the kind, which I will be utilizing throughout the rest of my MBA program. I will be evaluating Wikipedia based on the parameters set forth by Brenda Spatt. The credentials, Impartiality, style/tone, and currency of Wikipedia will all be examined in this paper (Spatt 2011). Its name comes from the derivatives of two words. Wiki, from "the Hawaiian word Wikiwiki meaning ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Proponents of Wikipedia might suggest that amateurs often make important contributions to fields outside of their profession. Astronomers, Bird watchers and, Historians are often outshined by discoveries made by Amateurs. However once the discovery is made it is the professionals who then validate and confirm that information something that doesn't happen on Wikipedia. The might also reference the unofficial policy of citing original sources as a way of validating the information. "Wikipedia is not a publisher of original thought or research"(Logan, D.W. p1) Impartiality should be an area where Wikipedia really flourishes. With so many voices contributing to the ultimate output individual biases and cultural perspectives would be rounded over and neutralized. One of the five pillars Wikipedians (what contributors call themselves) are expected to follow is not sharing unpublished results or promoting their personal theories. This sounds very noble but these are amateurs, people who by definition are passionate about a topic. If you are so passionate about a given subject that you donate you time and knowledge how can you be impartial even if you try. • 5. Sources Of Credibility Research papers are a part of every student's life. Some students may like the research papers but the others may not. But in the end a decent research paper would be the sources that make the paper credible. A lot of articles are not credible due to some areas. The areas include: the credibility of the author, the sources that were cited throughout the paper, how reliable the content is and a reliable publisher also how current and how accessible the article is. The author would be credible by being knowledgeable about the topic being spoken about. Furthermore, for the author to be credible, the author would have to be adding some outside sources that will give the article more credibility. • 6. Sources Of Diversity In Films When doing research for my topic, Diversity in Films, I came across many sources. The first source that I found was a scholarly journal named, Teaching Sociology. The journal, that was written by Mari Dagaz and Brent Harger, had a short segment about diversity in films. One of the main points that stood out was one about how women and minorities are portrayed in films. It stated that women and minorities in film are usually "underrepresented and based on traditional stereotypes." This point is what I believe is one of the strengths of this source. This is because that short segment allowed me to think about my topic more and opened my eyes to what I really needed to look for. Although, the fact that it did not specify a certain minority nor give examples would be a weakness of the source. The fact that the journal did not give good examples of the lack of diversity in films, would be considered the sources "weak" trait. If the journal would have given an example of a stereotype that is used or an example of how women and minorities are portrayed, it would have made the journal a lot stronger. But, since it did not, it caused me to have to look to other sources that would give me some kind of example. So the article basically forced me to have to look to other places that provided the information that it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A strength from this article is that it actually gave statistical information about the topic it was presenting. • 7. Source Code Essay There are several definition of source code, which makes regulating it difficult because different regulators may have varying conceptions of just what it is, and as a result, what kinds of rules should attach to it. The general definition of source code that most people acknowledge is "the version of software as it is originally written by a human in plain text" ( Source Code). According to this definition, code is written by humans in order to create software, which can be any operating system, program or data with a processor. The average person can see that the source code would be the code that the software needs in order to function. This is source code but source code is also much more. Another definition states holds that source code is "any fully executable description of a software system. It is therefore so construed as to include machine code, very high level languages and executable graphical representations of systems" (Harman). At first glance, it seems just like the other definition. However, it only seems that way because we automatically apply the assumption that the "executable description" is the same as the "version of software" which may not necessarily be the case. The description leads us to believe that the source code does not necessarily have to run the software but can just be a description for said software. The first definition leads us to believe that the code is that specific software. The second definition also mentions "machine code" and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Source Bias In Research What is a Good Source? Most students have written their fair share of papers that require multiple sources from multiple viewpoints. But how do you know which sources are reliable and which ones to avoid? With the amount of information out there, it is incredibly hard to know what is true or not or who is being incredibly biased or not. 1.Sources? According to the University of Illinois, different sources are better for different topics, it states that Newspapers are better for "Daily local, national, and international news, events, and editorial coverage" (Select the Best Information Source, n.d.). While Scholarly or Academic Journals are better for "Recent research on a topic" and" Focused, peer–reviewed articles written by experts" (Select the Best Information Source, n.d.). If bias is there, and you don't spot it, you might have a source that contradicts the other, which makes you less credible. Bias can change how an article is written and can obscure the truth of the information that is there. If there is a bias towards a certain party then the article might obscure the negatives of one party and only list negatives of the other, which would not be telling lies necessarily, but would not be telling the full truth, which can make for a slanted paper about the subject. These documents are raw materials which provide first–hand accounts or direct evidence about a topic under the examination. Primary sources, according to William Kelleher Storey in Writing History: A Guide for Students, "originate in the time period that historian are studying and vary a great deal." Primary source documents can help reconstruct a particular event that happened in the past. For example, if someone is interested on landmark U.S. Supreme Court cases, he or she would analyze the records these cases. • 11. Factors to Determine the Validity of Information Sources... Individuals such as university or high school students are, at one point or another in their studies, faced with the task of having to write a technical report that involves a research (specifically focused on existing material). There is an abundance of information available in the world today, which covers a vast amount of fields and all this information is readily available to the public but it is often unclear to these students that all the information available may not always be credible and actually reliable or even true. The negligence of these students often results in non–factual research papers that are poorly written up. The failure to check for reliable sources may lead to inadvertent plagiarism too. This report focuses on what makes sources of information more reliable and credible than others, with a specific focus on research reports. Readers seek sources of information that is trustworthy. That the creator, author or researcher's ideas are their own is substantiated mainly by evidence. • 12. USA Today Article: Scholarly Or Popular Source? When looking at each of the articles presented, there are defining factors that allow researchers to determine whether or not it is a scholarly or popular resource. Of the two articles, one can assert that the USA Today Article is a popular source and the article by Baker and Algorta (2016) is a scholarly source. Each of these sources has their advantages and disadvantages due to the stylistic devices employed by the writers. With the help of each article, knowledge of readers and viewers is expanded, and while there are some facets that detract from the quality of the knowledge gained, the readers benefits from the time spent reading. In the USA Today article and the article by Baker and Algorta (2016), one can use their differences to decide ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As the reader is allowed to gain this knowledge, there is a broadening of information that effects the general population. Since the general public is able to grasp this information, it makes it more accessible to those that would not normally come across scholarly articles that alienate those who are not researchers or students. While the article has simplistic language and makes the information more accessible, there are disadvantages. The article lacks citation which makes the information that the public is able to receive less credible. Since the information is less credible, it makes the information that the public receives more easily misconstrued. Alongside the lack of credibility, there is too much general information. The information that the public receives lacks a large amount of context that allows readers to gather more detailed and nuanced information that coexists with the research provided. Due to the nature of a popular source, less background knowledge of the subject is required; however, there is more opportunity for wrong information, for it is brief and can often be ... Analysis of Sources The purpose of this paper is to summarize and analyze the quality and reliability of articles from certain sources. The articles are about injuries in nursing, and ways to prevent them. The method was to find two sources that seemed questionable and two that seemed reliable, briefly discuss the topics and summarize the articles, and then analyze them. I have found that although two of the sources seemed questionable and two of them seemed reliable, three of the sources are actually reliable and one of them is actually questionable. • 17. Open Source Philosophy The History and Philosophy of Open Source The open source movement was born in 1984, at the MIT Artificial Intelligence Lab when Richard M. Stallman quit his position at the university to begin the GNU Project. Having grown tired of seeing his colleagues being hired off by corporations and signing nondisclosure agreements for their work, he set off to create a completely free, open operating system. Though he specialized in the field, building such a system from the ground up is nearly impossible for a single person; thus, he began with a more attainable goal, creating a C compiler. Though he was successful in this, he never managed to create a kernel (the core of an operating system), aside from GNU Hurd, of which we do not speak. Fortunately for the movement, one would later emerge with a similar philosophy. Around 1991, the GNU Project had amassed a respectable number of software packages, including the widely used GCC and Emacs, though it still lacked the core, a kernel. Then, more than six thousand kilometers away, a twenty–one–year–old Finnish university student began developing a small, open source system as a hobby. Once the open source community became interested in it, what started as a small project capable of little more than displaying text quickly morphed into one of the most widely–distributed pieces of software in history, containing more than twenty million lines of code, contributed to by tens of thousands of developers across the globe, and with ... It is important to use reliable and credible sources so that the information you use in a document you are writing is accurate and will not affect you in a negative way, by either getting a bad grade in school or just looking unintelligent to a colleague. When using ethos you create a sense of authority to the reader that what you are saying is reliable. For example, in commercials athletes advertise athletic products, while models advertise beauty products. This shows a reader that professional people in a certain field backup a product in a positive way. Ethos is also used when someone uses actions that a person has completed in the past, to help persuade people that they have experience and are reliable. When using logos you can cite statistics, analogies, and historical context about a topic to show you are a credible source and that the information you are using can be proven with evidence. It enhances a rational and fact based reasoning on a topic. If you use pathos and appeal to the more emotional side of a topic, a reader could immediately identify your source as bias, as it uses a human's sense of emotion to get someone to agree with a topic. A credible and reliable source can be determined through characteristics in spelling/grammar, citations and examples used within a document, and the author. Secondary source authors hold certain disadvantages in that the authors did not directly experience the actual event, meaning that they do not have a first–hand account of the experience that occurred. Because these secondary source authors were not affected, their information could contain inaccurate data, or their opinions askew due to their lack of a direct experience. Although secondary sources may have their disadvantages, secondary source authors have the ability to analyze, interpret, evaluate, and synthesize the original events and data that could not be done initially due to time constraints. With the ability to analyze statistics and documents, authors can construct explanations and justifications as to why these events arose. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We can also assume the time period based on his clothing; the clothes he has on can be associated with a time way before any of us were born. Upon other research, I have concluded that this statue is of Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus, who was a historical figure in Rome. In this essay, I will explain the importance of this primary source. Based on this picture, or primary source, we can assume that the figure shown is a hero or a respected person in society. This person obviously was part of a higher level of society, judging by the fact that he has a statue made of him to allow his legacy to live. Most importantly, we can see a German man on the right, standing with his arms raised, surrendering. This is a key reason why this source does not portray the battle as a disaster. The source uses specific details which cannot be picked up in the other sources and it also shows reasoning as the battle went in our favour. On the other hand, we have Source C which to me was the least useful. This is because it was a propaganda film which made it unreliable. It was also not very trustworthy because when compared to other sources prior knowledge, there are so many inaccuracies within it. More specifically, I will touch upon the following: What is the reliability of the source? Why would a source have to be kept anonymous? To what extent does a journalist keep a source confidential? Firstly, I will go on to briefly describe the Canadian Act that protects whistle–blowers (the term used to describe someone who brings an issue to light, almost always in their organization) and the shield law. Next, I will be discussing the ethics in keeping a source anonymous from the utilitarian point of view, as well as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As stated in the CAJ Ethics Guidelines, under Promises to Sources, it is important to discuss with a source wanting to be kept anonymous whether or not you, as a journalist, are willing to go to jail for keeping them anonymous when ordered by a court. It is important to discuss with your source that, if they mislead or lie to you about anything they say, the promise of keeping their anonymity is off. There have been many cases of journalists going to jail for keeping a source anonymous, even in the face of the law. If this doesn't show principle, then I don't know what does. There is also the aspect of acting from duty: a journalist has the duty of reporting to the public in order for them to know the truth about what's happening in the world. The right thing to do is to keep the source anonymous if it means that an important story or high–classified information will be out for the public to know–it is their right to know. In this perspective, a journalist does not look at their personal consequences–possible incarceration–but on the nature of their action to liberate the truth. They have the good intention, which makes it deontological. If we take a look at the first form of the categorical imperatives, it follows this as well because of the way they act: keeping a promise they made. A journalist also has true freedom because they have the autonomy to put themselves in a position of being in a bad situation with the law, using their rationality to weigh the options of leaking a good story or the possibility of suffering consequences for ... • 35. Summary Of The Naked Source By Linda Simon Every decent argument is backed by evidence. In "The Naked Source," Linda Simon argues that students should learn history by interpreting primary sources. Simon supports her argument that students should confront primary sources to better learn history by using ethos, logos, structure, and tone. Simon uses ethos as evidence to support her argument that students should learn history by interpreting primary sources. The introduction in "The Naked Source" indicates that Simon "earned a doctorate in English and American literature from Brandeis University and is currently professor of English at Skidmore College" (250). This information establishes her credibility, or ethos, as a current teacher. It also makes her a reliable source since she is not just some uneducated person advertising for her own benefit. She is a teacher that drew her conclusions through observing her students in the classroom. Simon's ethos supports her argument because she is a trustworthy source. Most of Simon's arguments also apply to logic; they make logical sense. Simon says "Students, of course, can never discover the boundary between "fact" and imaginative construction unless they have contact with primary sources" (253). Here, Simon uses logos as part of her evidence to explain to her ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She carries the audience through her argument in a logical sequence. First, she makes her claim that student do not know history and explains her reasons (250). She then elaborates on what history students are taught and what exactly is wrong with the methods by which they learn (251). After this, she explains the job of a historian to the reader – how historians confront primary sources to "make some sense of what once happened" (252). To end the article, Simon describes how students can better learn history through exploring primary sources (253). • 36. Is Open Source Software? In fact, all the mottoes of free software development have their counterparts in the theory of democracy and open society; "with enough eyeballs, all bugs are shallow" is merely the most obvious example. Karl Popper would have cheered.57 The importance of open–source software is not that it introduces us to a wholly new idea; it is that it makes us see clearly a very old idea. With open source the technology was novel, the production process was transparent, and the result of that process was a "product" which out–competed other products in the marketplace. "How can this have happened? What about the tragedy of the commons?" we asked in puzzlement, coming only slowly to the realization that other examples of commons–based, non–proprietary ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These are all guesses, however. At the very least, there is some possibility, even hope, that we could have a world in which much more of intellectual and inventive production is free. "'Free' as in 'free speech,'" Richard Stallman says, not "'free' as in 'free beer.'"61 But we could hope that much of it would be both free of centralized control and low cost or no cost. When the marginal cost of production is zero, the marginal cost of transmission and storage approaches zero, the process of creation is additive, and much of the labor doesn't charge–well, the world looks a little different.62 This is at least a possible future, or part of a possible future, and one that we should not foreclose without thinking twice. Yet that is what we are doing. The Database Protection Bills and Directives, which extend intellectual property rights to the layer of facts;63 the efflorescence of software patents;64 the UCITA–led validation of shrink wrap licenses that bind third parties;65 the Digital Millennium Copyright Act's anti–circumvention provisions66 – the point of all of these developments is not merely that they make the peer–to peer model difficult, but that in many cases they rule it out altogether. The free software and open–source software movements have produced software that rivals and, many would say, exceeds the capabilities of conventional proprietary, binary–only software. 52 Its adoption on the "enterprise level" is impressive, as is the number and ... • 37. Primary Source Analysis Primary sources refer to accounts of events that are written by an eye witness who witness that particular event. These documents are more often letters, memoirs, diaries, speeches, interviews, journals and other unpublished works of people who witness events. Primary sources may also include pieces such as magazine articles; newspapers and other published pieces as long as they were written as soon as the event took place. The secondary sources on the other hand play the role of interpreting the primary sources. It is for this reason that they can be described as having at least one step eliminated from the event in question. Secondary sources will assign value to, interpret and conjecture upon the events reported in the primary sources. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 39. Are the Stories from the Holocaust Survivors with PTSD... This investigation will answer the question To what extent are the stories from the Holocaust survivors with PTSD reliable as historical sources? This question is important because there are still holocaust survivors alive today, and their stories are arguably the ones that teach us he most about the Holocaust, since they are primary sources of the event.
