Babies Have Basic Personality Traits
Human
infants are
totally
helpless
that they
will not
survive on
their own.
Unlike other
mammalian
species,
human
infants are
incapable of taking care of themselves. They cannot even talk, walk or
eat solid food. They remain this way for several months up to one year.
Babies are defenseless without the protection of adults, particularly
their parents. However, babies are far from being complete clean
slates. Just like many basic instincts, some personality traits are already
hardwired in infants' brains. These are readily observable and have life-
long implications on the development of babies into toddlers, then into
children, adolescents and finally into adults.
Infant personality traits can be classified into three broad categories,
namely, grouchy, moody, and sunny. Grouchy babies are typically colic
babies that can easily be irritated. They cry with the slightest
discomfort. Some cry for most of their waking hours for no apparent
reason at all. In some cases, the grouchy attitude of babies may be due
to an underlying medical condition. If this is ruled-out, then it is simply
the default personality trait.
The second type of personality trait is being moody or having extreme
mood swings within short span of time. Moody babies may seem okay
and happy in one moment but may suddenly shift gear in an instant.
These babies may sometime have irregular sleep and may occasionally
have temper tantrums with loud screaming.
Finally, babies with sunny dispositions are probably the most desirable
for most parents and care providers. They can be very relax and happy
for most of their waking hours. They seldom complain or almost never
have temper tantrums. They may occasionally cry when they really
need something such as food or diaper change. The only downside is
that babies with sunny dispositions easily trust strangers. They may
remain to be very trusting even when they become adults.
