9. WHAT IS #METOO?[2] (Metoo Movement. Wikipedia, n.d.)
ā¢ It is a movement against sexual harassment and sexual assault. (Metoo
Movement. Wikipedia, n.d. section 1, para 1)
ā¢ ORIGINS:
ļ TARANA BURKE (2006) ā used "Me Too" in 2006, as part of a campaign to
promote "empowerment through empathy" among women of color who have
experienced sexual abuse, particularly within underprivileged communities.
(Metoo Movement. Wikipedia, n.d. section 1.1)
ā¢ RECENT:
ļ ALYSSA MILANO (2017) - encouraged spreading the hashtag
#MeToo, to attempt to draw attention to
sexual assault and harassment.
(Metoo Movement. Wikipedia, n.d. section 1.2)
10.
11.
12. #METOO and GENDER CHECK
#METOO is primarily subjected to women being harassed,
however, MEN also are harassed.
o One in every 6 men faces it.[3] (Information About Male Sexual Abuse &
Assault - The 1 in 6 Statistic. 1in6, n.d.)
o Actor Jimmy Bennet(17) was sexually assaulted by actress Asia
Argento (37) but didnāt report about it.
13. According to a student survey conducted (Harassment, 2018)
14. āThis is the point. The universe of men does not merit womenās
indiscriminate grace. If the #MeToo revolution has proved
anything, itās that women live under threat. Not sometimes, but all
the time.ā [4]
15. #METOO and GENDER CHECK
A group Stop Street Harassment released a nationwide survey on
harassment and assault.
ā¢ According to the survey
[5]
, which used a nationally
representative sample of about 2,000 adults (1000 males / 1000
females), 81 percent of women and 43 percent of men say they
have experienced some form of sexual harassment or assault in
their lives. (Stop Street Harassment, 2018)
- At least 25 percent of women experience sexual harassment in
the workplace.

such an offense?
According to a student survey conducted (Harassment, 2018)
17. PROXIMITY OF #METOO
ļ¶ Over 85 countries use the hashtag MeToo and have taken
actions on the issue of harassment.[7]
ļ¶ The #MeToo started in WORKPLACES as the harassment
began from there. But, since harassment is now faced by victims
at almost every place, #MeToo is taken on another level, where
women of all race, creed, nationality have joined hands to
eliminate this evil.
18. SOURCES OF #METOO
#MeToo used several platforms to call upon the victims.
ļ SOCIAL MEDIA
ļ DIGITAL MEDIA
ļ MAGAZINES
ļ INTERVIEWS
ļ WALKS
ļ PROTESTS
19.
20. LIMITATIONS
#MeToo has lost itās
reputation because
ā People have used
#MeToo for FALSE
ACCUSATIONS
ā 2-10% of the #MeToo
accusations are false
[8]
(BBC.
2018), and they get un-
necessary hype, that is
defaming the hashtag.
ā SOCIAL MEDIA has
created a negative image of
this hashtag, as the fuss
created is much more than
the actual point of matter.
21.
22. INFLUENCE & IMPACTS OF #METOO
ĆAfter this movement many men tend to not have any
conversation with women.
Ć Men avoid dining with women.
Ć Every 3rd manager is uncomfortable in assisting women and
every second manager is uncomfortable in working with
women
Ć EFFECTS IN OFFICES
- Gender based rifts
- Changes in Harassment policies
23. Women have taken it to
an extreme level that
has led to many
domestic troubles.
Men now avoid the one
on one interaction with
women, as in coffee
breaks or meetings etc.
and this might leave
career making women
far behind!
24. āItās Only Difficult If You Are A Man With Something To Hideā
- IDREES ELBA, when asked about how #MeToo has affected the male
actors in Hollywood.[9[

25. RECIPROCATIONS
ā¢ It is easy to downplay the success of #METOO but reality is
social movements can take decades to create a lasting change.
ā¢ There are several hashtags that have been raised as a response
to #MeToo, the most common of those are:
- #HowIWillChange
- #TimesUp
- #YouToo
- #ChurchToo
26. #YOUTOO
#YouToo is a call for
women who are too afraid
afraid to speak about what
what happened to them.
Harassment results in
anxiety and lethal stress
and this is a call to tell the
victims that they are not
alone.
27. #HOWIWILLCHANGE
ā¢ For every take of women being accused there is an abuser and
statistically that abuser is a man.
ā¢ In response to #MeToo men are posting #HowIWillChange to
demonstrate their intentions to be a better allies.
ā¢ Benjamin Law ā an Australian actor and journalist used this
hashtag to tell the public that men are ready to stand with
women.
28. #TimesUp[10] (Timeās up (movement). Wikipedia, 2018)
ā¢ #Timesup movement is came
into being in the response of
#MeToo. It is also a campaign
for harassed women at
workplaces and other
institutes. It is a call of times up
for those who are continuously
harassing women.
31. #HIMTOO[11]
(Him Too movement, Wikipedia. 2018)
#HimToo is a movement against
ā FALSE RAPE ALLEGATIONS
ā MEN BEING HARASSED
It started in October 2018 when a mother tweeted about her son being
afraid of false rape accusations.
32.
33. BRETT KAVANAUGH
He is a supreme court judge and a member of the Republicans of
the US.
After #MeToo trended everywhere, there were several allegations
of rape and assault against Kavanaugh.
#HimToo was his stance as he rejected all the allegations and
accusations against him.
The Senate Judiciary Committee concluded there "was no
evidence to substantiate any of the claims" of sexual misconduct
leveled against Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh
[12]
.
This caused a huge backlash to the #MeToo.
35. WHAT HAS BEEN DONE?
+ US congress signed a bill in response to #MeToo.
ļ āThe bill, called the EMPOWER ACT[13]
, would outlaw that
practice in claims of workplace harassment.ā (Exact wording from
https://www.vox.com/2018/7/18/17586532/sexual-harassment-bill-ban-nondisclosure-
agreements-ndas-congress-metoo): (Vox, 2018. para.3)
ļ It is the purpose of this title, through the exercise by Congress of its
power to regulate commerce among the several States, to deter,
prevent, reduce, and respond to harassment in the workplace,
including sexual harassment, sexual assault, and harassment based on
other protected categories. [H.R.6406 ā 115th Congress (2017-2018). The
Empower Act.]
36. OPEN CARRY POLICY[14]
ā āOpen carryā refers to the practice of carrying firearms in plain
view in public spaces. Though most states continue to require a
permit in order to carry a concealed weapon in public, most
states now place few to no restrictions on open carry.
āThirty-one states of the US allow the open carrying of a
handgun without any license or permit, although in some cases
the gun must be unloaded.
37. WHAT MUST BE DONE?
ā VICTIMS need DOMESTIC SUPPORT much more than these hashtags.
ā COMMUNITY GATHERINGS must raise talks on these issues, and
people should be educated about it.
ā An insight drift is needed so we donāt raise our daughters to be the
victims and our boys to be predators.
ā The career-oriented women must be given opportunities and the
girls must be encouraged to be career-focused. This can lead to
GENDER EQUALITY in workplaces and hence less harassment.
38. RESPONSES TO HOW WE CAN STOP HARASSMENT
According to a student survey
conducted (Harassment, 2018)
39. EFFECTIVE SUMMARY
#MeToo is not endgame, but is a clarion call to something bigger.
It is a reminder for everyone to raise voice, specially for the ones
who lack the power to fight alone.
HARASSMENT is something that has haunted both the genders
effectively but for women it has proved to be more damaging.
The inferiority tags, the old-school approach and the pessimistic
insight has had a lot of victims lethally suffer through this.
#MeToo is a call to those victims. It is a fight for survival.
41. āTHE #METOO MOVEMENT IS SAD,
HONEST, POWERFUL TO EVERYONE
COMING FORWARD. YOU ARE
BEAUTIFUL AND YOU ARE WORTHY.
PROUD TO STAND WITH YOUā[16]
(Kafakah, 2017)
42. WE HOPE THAT #METOO BECOMES
#NEVERAGAIN. BECAUSE THIS WORLD
DESERVES PEACE.
