2. When it all begins:
• Tarana Burke, the founder of a non-profit
organisation to help survivors of sexual violence in
all its forms, first gave her movement, in 2006, a
name – MeToo
• But in 2017, Twitter became the engine for the
growth of #MeToo movement.
• The trigger was a tweet by an actor Alyssa Milano
urging survivors to share their experiences with this
hashtag.
• It was result of the exposé on Harvey Weinstein’s
frequent sexual harassment and coercion of women
in the film industry.
3. Why #MeToo GoesToo Far
“What gives men any sense that they have
permission to do this? It’s hard for me to
conclude that it’s anything different [than]
just a basic disrespect and disregard for
women and their boundaries.”

6. MeToo-The Indian Perspective
• When MeToo was widespread in US, there was for the
most part silence in India.
• It eventually outbursts, a year later, whenTanushree Dutta
accused a mainstream Indian actor of harassment.
• It triggered series of such allegations involving producers,
actors, editors, professors and even ministers.
• One can put this down to the fact that #MeToo has the
advantage of social networking behind it anything put on
facebook spreads like wildfire.
• Single outcry was a hesitant step, there is always a
strength in numbers.
