1. THE GREAT GATSBY

2. ANALYZE THE LEARNERS
This lesson will be for 11th Grade students. It’s a class of 24
students, with 14 girls and 10 boys.
1 of the students is visually impaired.
4 of the students have ADHD (Attention Deficit
Hyperactivity Disorder).

3. MAIN OBJECTIVE
By the end of the week my students will be able to identify
key elements, devices, and have a general understanding
of The Great Gatsby through learning about the author’s
background, the history, culture, characters, and plot of
the story with 95% accuracy.

4. DAY BY DAY ACTIVITIES

5. MONDAY
 Introduction to The Great Gatsby, watch a YouTube video on
the author F. Scott Fitzgerald, and a handout/webpage to
remember important facts and details.
 Introduce to the class to the social media sites that they will
work on through the course of the unit plan: The class Facebook
page,Wikispaces.com page, Blendspace, Google+, Twitter,
and Zello accounts.
 Assign copies of The Great Gatsby
Homework:
 Read chapters 1 & 2

6. TUESDAY
 Discussion of the first two chapters of the novel followed by a
brief history of the 1920s shown through YouTube videos.
 Go over the characters found in the story, identify them, and
write down first impressions of them.
 Have the students break up into groups and make a sociogram
for the characters they have met so far.
Homework:
 Listen to the podcast about the characters and their personality,
read chapter 3 & 4.

7. WEDNESDAY
 Go over and discuss the what they read in chapters 3 & 4.
 Introduce the students to the media & materials (poster)
project, the digital imaging assignment, and The Don’t Judge
A Book By Its Cover assignment. All of them are in class
assignments and will be presented when completed.
Homework:
 Read chapters 5 & 6

8. THURSDAY
 Discuss character development in the novel and discuss the
students favorite and least favorite character’s in the novel so
far.
 Watch a YouTube on The Great Gatsby that describes the
characters.
Homework:
 Read chapter 7,8, & 9 (Finishing the novel)
 Listen to the second half of the podcast about character
development.
 Take the poll on twitter about your favorite and least favorite
character after finishing the novel.

9. FRIDAY
Discuss the students feelings on how the novel ended.
Their reasoning for choosing their favorite/ least favorite
character.
Go to Facebook and watch the movie trailers for The
Great Gatsby.
Introduce them to the Art & Bots assignment and the
YouTube & Storytelling assignment.
