The Art of Argumentation
The art of argumentation has become very complex and multi–dimensional in a sense of the many
didn't ways you can approach it. Argumentation is communicative reason in situations where
people sole purpose is to prove something through justified acts, beliefs, attitudes, and values.
Argumentation is said to mainly rely on good reason and, that is the audience base to agree or
degree with the agreement. In any situation every audience is different so therefore good reason
can be impacted by culture, which let leaves the decision making to argumentation.
Argumentation has become a part of ones everyday life, no matter the culture or the location. An
argument can be made in a small or big way; it simple just depends on the situation. If 20 year old
Tommy calls his mom and tells her that everyone in the world is going to be at the Adam Levine
concert and if he misses the concert it will be the end of his social life. Tommy made an argument
to his mother whether he was trying to or not. Debate is a big part of argumentation because it all
about persuading and convincing the audience to understand or agree with whoever may be
speaking. The process of inquiry and advocacy is debate. Debate requires two completive sides in an
engaging head to head clash of support for or against a specific proposition. In this paper four to five
different fallacies will be discussed, defined and shown how they co–exist in real life situations as
well as in debates. The fallacies that will be

Mandatory Vaccination Argumentative Essay
Mandatory vaccinations have been hotly debated in the United States for over two centuries, making
the argument almost as old as the country itself. As early as 1809, Massachusetts became the first
state to mandate the world's premiere vaccine. Authorities recognized the life–saving benefits of the
smallpox vaccine. They chose to require inoculation to protect the community from further
outbreaks. Public outrage ensued as some community members feared the new vaccine and believed
they should be able to choose if they wished to receive it. The most vocal protestors formed
anti–compulsory vaccination groups and were successful in getting laws overturned in many states.
However, even the United States Supreme Court has upheld states' rights to require immunization.

Despite significant progress in the fight against preventable disease, millions still die needlessly
each year. According to UNICEF, originally known as the United Nations International Children's
Emergency Fund, a vaccine preventable disease is responsible for 2 million fatal infections
worldwide each year. About 75% of these deaths occur in children under five years of age. (N) In
more vivid terms, UNICEF notes that vaccine–preventable diseases kill a child every 20 seconds.
(D) Due to high rates of childhood vaccination, the United States has experienced a dramatic
reduction in such deaths. A comparison of the years 1950 and 2010 clearly illustrates the benefits of
vaccinations. During this 60–year period, deaths from diphtheria reduced from 410 to 0, tetanus
from 336 to 3, pertussis from 1,118 to 26, and polio from 1,904 to 0. Measles deaths dropped from
468 in 1950 to 0 in 2008, the last year a United States death rate was recorded. It's not surprising that
vaccinations have been touted as one of the top ten health achievements of the 20th century by the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

What Makes An Effective Argument Ineffective?
1.The basic parts of an effective argument are a stated clearly defined issue, makes a claim, and
offers support for that claim. Sometimes an argument may also recognize opposing viewpoints and
incorporate them into the argument
2.What makes an argument ineffective is when using emotional appeals to distract a reader from a
lack of evidence. Also the use of faulty reasoning, and inaccurate facts.
3.An issue is a problem, controversy, or an idea that people can have different viewpoints about.
The term claim is a point in which a writer is trying to prove. This is typically the writer's viewpoint
on the issue. A refutation is recognizing and auguring against opposing viewpoints.
4.A claim of value focuses on an opinion or judgment about

In order to have a good argumentative essay, there are a few important standards of critical
thinking that is needed to be found in the essay such as the clearness, accuracy, importance or
relevance, sufficiency, depth, breath and precision that is stated by Nosich. The strength of this
argumentative essay is consider weak because it does not capture the interest of the reader and
was not persuasive enough; even though from the introduction of the argumentative essay
includes full sentences and a good opinion, the argumentative essay is all objective. The
introduction includes too much of the emotional appeals, such as when it wrote " Day after day
the number of people worshipping this icon has been growing since the birth of this creature. well
to many it may seem harmless idol but in my opinion, Mickey Mouse is an 'devil in disguise'
influencing the minds of young and old people to adopt the culture of the 'devil' which doesn't
blend will with the moral values of society and should be banned". To improve the introduction, the
writer should include of all objectives statements relative facts and appeals to the mind of people
who agree or disagree with the topic.

Argumentation Theory Vs. Argument
Introduction Since the beginning of time, humans have made arguments. Arguments doesn't
necessary mean that you disagree with someone, or want to attack someone else's opinions. It could
just be something that you want to convince people is right, or it could be an argument just like you
would think an argument between two people would be. As Toulmin states in his book The Uses of
Argument, "Not every argument is set out in formal defense of an outright assertion"(Toulmin,
2003, pg 12). Sometimes an argument is just sharing a thought with someone who doesn't have those
same thoughts. The argumentation theory has developed as humans and communication has, but it
still has the basic principles that it had when it was invented....show more content...
Nobody is making a valid argument. Instead they are making statements; statements that have no
logical reasoning, or anything to back them up. Because of this, because nobody is making a valid
argument as the argumentation theory states, we have people that just simply cannot respect one
another's statements and points of view.
As Argumentation Theory Stands Today Argumentation has been studied, and as I stated earlier, has
evolved over the many years it has been studied. The most modern and well–known scientist that has
had a major role in explaining argumentation theory is Stephen Toulmin. Toulmin breaks down the
stages of an argument, and made a structure that if used, expresses the argumentation theory as the
definition I described above states. He claims that if this structure is used, arguments will become
more favorable to be accepted by others without that same idea (Toulmin, 2003). He breaks the
structure down into six parts, all crucial to one another without any of them being able to stand alone
without the other. The first thing in the structure is a claim, which he describes as purely a
statement, meaning that without something to actually back it up, it means nothing (Toulmin,
2003). He then moves on to the ground or foundation of the argument. This is where you explain
why your making the statement, why it means what your about to say it means (Toulmin, 2003).
Then he moves on to warrant, or a justification of your claim, telling

Argumentative Reflection
Argumentative Essay Reflection One of my central struggles throughout high school has been
writing essays and reports for all classes not just english. I was a little worried when I signed up to
take this course, since it counted as a college credit. Even though I was worried about taking this
course, but I am thankful that I did. The main reason behind my decision to take this course is
because I thought it would better prepare me for college. This argumentative essay was one of the
hardest essay that I have written. I have never written in this style before this essay. Even though, I
have never been the best writer, I have always got good grades. After receiving my first rough draft I
knew this class was not going to be easy. The part...show more content...
One of the areas of my writing where I was struggling in using my voice. Granite, there were parts
of my essay where I successfully integrated quotes within my voice, but for the most part that was
my weakest area. For example of one of my better integrated quotes, in my third paragraph when I
say, "Today, consumers rely on social media for everything, whether it is communicating with old
friends, finding new friends, shopping, researching, and staying informed with the latest news.
Daniel adds that, "'Americans who take part in political activities on social networking sites also
tend to be highly active in other areas of political or civic life'" (29), which insinuates that people
rely on social media more today than we have in the past". This was one of my better examples
because I further explain and analyze the quote in my voice instead of just ending the sentence
after the quote. One of my poor examples is, "Many people who suffer from depression care a lot
about what others think about them. That is why many of those people tend to turn to social
media as an outlet to express their feelings". I made a bold statement and did not back up what I
said with my voice I just ended that sentence and moved on. Instead of moving on I should have
explained it further and told them why people tend to turn to social media to express their feelings.
One of the areas of my writing where I was

Toulmin Essay On Argumentation
Have you used this style of argumentation before in your studies or career (either verbally or in past
writing assignments/projects)? Will you use it in the future? Why or why not? How will you
incorporate your instructor's feedback in your Toulmin essay, assigned this week? What
improvements do you hope to make in the Toulmin essay?
In my personal opinion , I believe that Toulmin argumentation is used in everyday activities. I just
did not know that the style had a name. In my day to day activities, I find myself explain the claims,
warranty, and even debate when trying to explain why policy are put in place for safety measures.

Three Spheres of an Argument
According to Goodnight, there are three spheres of an argument. These spheres are personal, public
and technical. Arguments in the personal sphere are often unrestricted and unsophisticated
interactions with family and friends. Arguments in the technical sphere are based on a specific
expertise or specialized knowledge. Arguments in the public sphere transcend private and specialized
communities and engage the public at large. The public sphere provides a forum for the resolution
of controversy and for public deliberation. Goodnight (1985) theorizes: Members of "societies" and
"historical cultures" participate in vast and not altogether coherent superstructures which invite them
to channel doubts through prevailing discourse practices. In the democratic tradition, we can
categorize these channels as the personal, the technical and the public spheres. "Sphere" denotes
branches of activity–the grounds upon which arguments are built and the authorities to which
arguers appeal. (p.2) Goodnight contends that the independence of each of these spheres is governed
by a different set of standards and thus is distinct from each of the others. For example "the
independence of the spheres is protected by a variety of laws protecting privacy and discouraging
government intervention in private affairs" (Goodnight, p.3). However, he also suggests that the
borders between these spheres are not inflexible and at times argument can exist within multiple
spheres simultaneously. Goodnight

Argumentative Essay On Global Warming
Global warming, we see it as sad polar bears hopelessly swimming for their lives in the ocean. It's
shown as rising sea levels that can washout entire cities. It even sometimes gets turned into politics
but scientifically, what is the definition of global warming? It is the heating up the of Earth, caused
by infrared radiation that gets stuck in our atmosphere because of the increase of CO2 put into the
atmosphere. Infrared radiation is electromagnetic radiation that cannot be seen by the human eye,
but we feel it as heat. Seems pretty logical doesn't it? To some it doesn't seem as reasonable. Some
believe global warming isn't a man made problem, but just a cycle of 'weather patterns'. For
example, our now president –Donald J. Trump– doesn't consider climate change to a threat to the
inhabitants of earth. Our president also said that global warming is a 'hoax'.
"Snowing in Texas and Louisiana, record setting freezing temperatures throughout the country and
beyond.
Global warming is an expensive hoax!"
–Donald J. Trump
This is what many people believe, and this tweet too seems pretty logical to a majority of people.
But in 2014 January 29th when Donald J. Trump posted this tweet, there was record setting freezing
temperatures happening nation and worldwide. But also 2014 was one of the top three hottest years
on record. Now that doesn't seem like a 'hoax'.
Humans don't like being wrong. It's embarrassing, uncomfortable to believe something and then be
confronted about it. So that's why there's still high percentage of people who don't believe in the
change in climate. People who work with oil companies don't want to acknowledge it because it
can ruin their business. Politicians ignore the problem because it costs money to fix our past
mistakes. That fear, people being scared, it makes us shut down. But we can try ignoring the
problem, but the thing about problems is, they can be ignored but they never truly disappear.
Weather may feel the same as every other year, but The whole world is heating up, including our
vast oceans.
Tropical hurricanes need to have surface water temperatures to be 26В°C or more for them to form.
As our oceans get hotter hurricanes are able to form farther out in the sea

Argumentative Essay About Family
When I hear the word family, I think of people who are are blood related, the people you live
with, and the people you see all the time. They provide for you and embarrass you. People are also
family, even if they aren't blood related, but are there for you no matter what and they mean
everything to you. Family is always by your side when you need them. People hear family and
think about parents, I hear family and think about my parents, aunts, cousins, friends, and my karate
family. They are all so important to me and I don't know what I would do without them. On the
other hand, Romeo and Juliet displayed family in an interesting way. When Juliet said she didn't
want to marry Paris, her mother said she would disown her if she didn't do...show more content...
Loyalty is sticking with the people who have hurt you or lost your trust. It's having someone's back
even though they might've stabbed you in yours. When you have loyalty, you don't leave someone
just because they said something mean about you or you heard something from someone else. They
might have hurt you, or you might've gotten into an argument, but at the end of the day you will
always be best friends. When you have loyalty is doesn't matter what they said or what they did, you
love them anyway. Similarly, how Romeo and Juliet get married behind their parents' backs. Also,
how when Romeo thought that Juliet was dead, he went and got a poison and killed himself.
Another example is when Tybalt kept his loyalty to the Capulet family by killing Mercutio.
When I hear the word trust I think of friends. You have to have a lot of trust in your friends and
they need to be able to trust you. I have a huge amount of trust in my best friend, I tell her
everything. There are some people who say that you can trust them, but then it turns out that you
can't and they've told everyone your secret. I think that trust is confiding in a person or people that
you know if you say, "don't tell anyone," they won't tell anyone. For instance, in Romeo and Juliet,
Friar Laurence kept Romeo and Juliet's trust by not telling anyone about their marriage. I think that
Romeo and Juliet trusted each other enough

The expression argument has two meanings in scholarly writing. First, it means a composition that
takes a position on one side of a divisive issue. You might write an argument against the death
penalty, or for or against censorship of pornography. But argument has another meaning, too. It
means an essay that, simply, argues a point. You might assemble an argument about the significance
of ancestor myths in a certain aborigine culture, or you might write an argument defending your
understanding of any poem or essay that is read in your philosophy class. (Winthrop University)

In emotionally stimulating situations, however, the audience will hold more sturdily to its beliefs
the more strongly those beliefs are challenged. Young, Becker and Pike suggest breaking these
barriers to communication by using a variation of Rogers' non–directive therapy. In
"Communication: Its Blocking and its Facilitation," Rogers suggests that in emotional disputes,
neither party should put forward a position until she has carefully, non–judgmentally and with the
maximum possible empathy restated the position of the other, to the other's satisfaction. (Brent)
This will convey to the other the sense that he is understood and that the two parties are more
similar than different, thereby creating a context for communication. (Brent) Carl Rogers was born
January 8, 1902 in Oak Park, Illinois, the fourth of six children. His education started in the second
grade because he could already read before kindergarten. He spent his adolescence isolated,
independent and self–disciplined. He went to the University of Wisconsin as an agriculture major,
but later switched to religion to study for the ministry. He has been quoted as saying "that his new
experiences so broadened his thinking that he began to doubt some of his basic religious views."
(Boeree) Carl Rogers later married Ms. Helen Elliot and moved to New York to start school at the
Union Theological Seminary, a famous liberal religious institution.

Rhetorical Analysis Of Rogerian Argument
My honest thought on argumentation prior to starting this course were that argumentation was
going to very easy. I simply thought that it would consist of arguing with someone back and forth
trying to get my point across. But i was wrong, base off my pro/con speech and the few chapters
that we have covered i've realized that argumentation is more complex than what i had expected
it to be. There is different ways that someone can go about when state their claim using Rogerian
argumentations style or using Aristotle's rhetorical appeals or other forms of argumentation
styles. After my speech i realized that a clear and controversial topic is needed in order to see
both sides of the claim. Aside from a topic research is very important it must be credible the more
credibility one has the better are your chances of persuading the audience. Now i see
argumentation as a process of reasoning that must consist of organized information and credible
sources. What surprised me about my topic was how hard it was trying to find credible
information. There was a lot of information but a lot of it wasn't credible, there was also a lot of
information but the data wasn't from the United States it was it foreign countries so it was no good
for me. However i did find scholarly articles and other credible sources i just had to really dig to
find the information. One thing that surprised me about my topic was that i didn't get more than 2
or 3 people who tried and rebuttal me. I had prepared

Argumentative Essay On Renewable Energy
Renewability
For nearly everyone on earth, fossil fuels are a part of our daily lives. Some of the more obvious
places to find petroleum products would be gas and diesel in cars and trucks, but it is in more than
just your tank. Without fossil fuels, we would not have things such as plastic to make a wide
variety of things such as tires, kayaks, or even computers. The question remains, do we need fossil
fuels?
In this day and age, we have new energy sources that could be used to power our homes and
transportation. Wind and solar power are used all over the world, but are still used far less than
fossil fuels. Most would say it's not reliable or it doesn't make any profit. While both statements are
true, it doesn't mean we can't make a better future using renewable energy. In fact, the only reason
we don't use renewables for everything is that we don't want to change. The hard truth is we need to
change. Fossil fuels are great right now, but if we run out, humanity must have another source of
energy.
Renewable energy may seem like a daunting task, but the benefits to humanity could be incredible.
Public uses of renewable energy range from transportation all the way to heating and cooling.
Everything we use could become less explosive and less expensive. Cities with a high concentration
of people could become safer and healthier places to live. Transportation could be converted to
electricity dramatically, improving smog conditions. Global warming may or may not

Argumentative Essay On Climate Change
Climate change can be traced down to since the mid–1800s, when the industrial revolution first
started taking place all around the world. Lives of human and animal species have been negatively
affected since then, with events such as natural disasters, the melting of ice in polar regions, and
change in weather and living conditions. Climate change in polar regions, in particular, has faced
the most damage compared to any other region because of its location in regard to the sun. Climate
change holds many different views and opinions about the effects, and even the existence itself, but
evidence is clear and unmistakable in global ramifications and local impact in polar regions.
"...Climate change [is] the 'greatest hoax ever perpetrated on the American people'", skeptics like
Senator Inhofe of Oklahoma like to say. Climate change is change in climate patterns due to an
increase in carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases produced by certain human activity.
According to the National Snow and Ice Data Center, data taken by satellite has shown that the
Arctic cover has decreased by 30% over the past 30 years, and this change, which also include
change in sea ice and permafrost, in artic weather and climate is caused by humans. Although
numerous scientists have confirmed the legitimacy of climate change, there are different views on
whether climate change is real or not. Government officials like Senator Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma or
Senator Marco Rubio of Florida have explicitly stated that they do not believe climate change is
neither real, nor caused by humans (Tom McCarthy, 2014). On the other hand, mainstream media
and other media outlets, such as The Independent and The Economist, have reported their findings
of climate change and its legitimacy. The Independent (Conner, S. 2011) reported that records of
these changes were taken by military submarines, land measurements, and satellite data to prove ice
in polar regions are melting faster and faster. Satellites have tracked sea ice since the 1970s and by
nuclear submarines since the Cold War,
according to Peter Wadhams of Cambridge University and it was predicted that by September
2015, there would be no more sea ice. (Conner, S. 2011). Luckily, sea ice has not

What Is An Argumentative Passage Analysis
What is an argumentative passage analysis?
In a passage analysis, you take some piece of written prose which contains an argument and extract
the argument from it. In order to do this, you must identify the conclusion of the argument, as well as
any premises that support the conclusion, and structure them in such a way that the argument is
clearly valid (if indeed it is valid in the passage).
Here is an example of an argumentative passage:
Socrates is a man, and all men are mortal. As such, Socrates is mortal.
Properly analysed, this passage could be put into premise–conclusion form as follows:
Socrates is a man.
All men are mortal.
в€
ґ Socrates is mortal.
That was an easy example. Sometimes it's more difficult to tell which claim is the conclusion and
which are the premises. Consider:
But of course, this argument is terribly misguided. After all, by any reasonable definition of the
word "human," an unborn child of any age is as much a human as you or me. That is why abortion is
never permissible. The aforementioned argument is right to say that it is never permissible to kill
humans, but wrong to say that fetuses are not humans.
This passage is much more difficult to formalize. The first problem we encounter is that it's not clear
which sentence contains the thesis. We may be tempted to look towards the first and last sentences
for a clue, but it seems unlikely that either of these is the main point being argued by the author. At
the very least, those do not seem to be the

Argumentative Essay On Family
Vika Zelazny
Prof. Rice
English composition 1
26 September 2017
Families
DNA does not define a family, love does. The average American citizen pictures the reason for
adopting a child often negative. This image contains a man and a woman who cannot have children
of their own, a single mother who will be unable to provide for the infant due to her young age, lack
of financial support, or a variety of unfortunate circumstances. Adoption is one of the best options for
a family who cannot have a child for whatever reason. The idea that every person, young or old,
deserves a family to support, love and raise them is very important in life. Foster families,
adoptive families and even blended families give children a great opportunity to have a forever
family no matter what label is front of family. This relates to me because I went through different
types of alternate families ever since I was a baby. No matter what type of alternate family one is a
part of: a family is a family.
If biological parents decide to give their child away, they can put their child in foster care until a
forever family is found. In some cases, biological parents put children up for adoption for many
good reasons. Sometimes biological parents cannot take care of a child for health, financial
problems, or young age. A foster family is defined as a family that provides custody or
guardianship for children whose parents are unable to look after them. Many foster families are
temporary and many children go

Argumentative Essay On Human Nature
This essay will argue that it is human nature for people, some more than others, to see themselves as
more moral or prosocial than their peers. Numerous articles will be gathered to not only support but
contradict this argument. These articles will be analysed and compared to produce a complete
argument.
The principal objective of the research conducted by Pedregon, C.A., Farley, R.L., Davis, A.,
Wood, J.M. & Clark, R.D. (2012), was to investigate the better than average effect (BTAE) using a
questionnaire to establish if people rated themselves and their family members above average on
socially desirable qualities. Pedregon et al (2012) questionnaire contained both the NEO Five Factor
Inventory(NEO–FFI) and the Nonadaptive and Adaptive Personality (SNAP). Using both these
methods to measure personality traits ensures that they obtain accurate findings which support their
hypothesis and give us a good understanding of how people see themselves in relation to others.
Pedregon et al (2012) found that participants were more likely to rate themselves as having socially
desirable characteristics, this supports the BTAE and also strengthening the interpretation that it is
human nature to consider yourself more moral or prosocial than your peers.
Moreover, Pedregon et al (2012) sample size consists of 286 undergraduate university students
which is a respectable sample size, however a wide range of the students were from Mexico, this is
a limitation of the study as it could be

Examples Of Rogerian Argumentation
Rogerian is a style of argumentation that does not take an adversarial approach. This style of
argumentation moves away from a combative stance. The Rogerian argument consists of four parts:
the introduction, context, writer's position, and benefits to the opponent. In "Is the College Use of
American Indian Mascots Racist," Jane Willy does a great job of not taking a particular side and
promoting ethical growth. Therefore, Willy effectively uses Rogerian argumentation to enhance his
argument. In Willy's introduction, he introduces the controversy of how there are differing views
regarding the mascot names of college teams. The author catches the audience's attention as he
provides a story of his experiences with a particular football team at...show more content...
This is supposed to show the opponent how they would benefit by agreeing with the writer's
position. Willy proposes that he thinks "The voice of the Indians is the voice that should, finally,
be listened to" (Willy, 2008, para. 6). This shows the opponent that if they adopt the writer's
position, it would give the Indians the right to determine if the names of the mascots are racist.
Also, Willy finds common ground between the opposing viewpoints and provides a compromise.
He brings up the controversy regarding the North Dakota "Fighting Sioux." The National
Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is considering taking this name away from them because
of differences among the community. Will proposes that "If it can, and if the Sioux then agree to
let the university use their image, the NCAA ought to withdraw its objection" (Willy, 2008, para.
7). Then, he states that if "The university cannot persuade the Sioux, well, the Fighting Sioux will
just have to agree that they have lost this fight," come to a compromise, and "Take the name of the
Hawks or the Eagles or of any other group that won't object" (Willy, 2008, para. 7). Willy provides a
compromise for both sides that is

Jesus Argumentation
This piece looks toward the beaten, contorted body of Christ, who is being presented to the people
of Jerusalem before he was crucified. This forceful painting was probably an altarpiece. It was meant
to appeal to the viewer's emotions. Inspiring empathy and reverence for Jesus's suffering. The calm
resignation on Christ's face contracts with the agitated expressions of the other figures in the
painting. In this way, the painting offers a means to contemplate our own humanity and Christianity's
ultimate promise of eternal life after death.

Essay Of Argumentation

  • 1. The Art of Argumentation The art of argumentation has become very complex and multi–dimensional in a sense of the many didn't ways you can approach it. Argumentation is communicative reason in situations where people sole purpose is to prove something through justified acts, beliefs, attitudes, and values. Argumentation is said to mainly rely on good reason and, that is the audience base to agree or degree with the agreement. In any situation every audience is different so therefore good reason can be impacted by culture, which let leaves the decision making to argumentation. Argumentation has become a part of ones everyday life, no matter the culture or the location. An argument can be made in a small or big way; it simple just depends on the situation. If 20 year old Tommy calls his mom and tells her that everyone in the world is going to be at the Adam Levine concert and if he misses the concert it will be the end of his social life. Tommy made an argument to his mother whether he was trying to or not. Debate is a big part of argumentation because it all about persuading and convincing the audience to understand or agree with whoever may be speaking. The process of inquiry and advocacy is debate. Debate requires two completive sides in an engaging head to head clash of support for or against a specific proposition. In this paper four to five different fallacies will be discussed, defined and shown how they co–exist in real life situations as well as in debates. The fallacies that will be Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Mandatory Vaccination Argumentative Essay Mandatory vaccinations have been hotly debated in the United States for over two centuries, making the argument almost as old as the country itself. As early as 1809, Massachusetts became the first state to mandate the world's premiere vaccine. Authorities recognized the life–saving benefits of the smallpox vaccine. They chose to require inoculation to protect the community from further outbreaks. Public outrage ensued as some community members feared the new vaccine and believed they should be able to choose if they wished to receive it. The most vocal protestors formed anti–compulsory vaccination groups and were successful in getting laws overturned in many states. However, even the United States Supreme Court has upheld states' rights to require immunization. (A) Vaccinations should be...show more content... Despite significant progress in the fight against preventable disease, millions still die needlessly each year. According to UNICEF, originally known as the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund, a vaccine preventable disease is responsible for 2 million fatal infections worldwide each year. About 75% of these deaths occur in children under five years of age. (N) In more vivid terms, UNICEF notes that vaccine–preventable diseases kill a child every 20 seconds. (D) Due to high rates of childhood vaccination, the United States has experienced a dramatic reduction in such deaths. A comparison of the years 1950 and 2010 clearly illustrates the benefits of vaccinations. During this 60–year period, deaths from diphtheria reduced from 410 to 0, tetanus from 336 to 3, pertussis from 1,118 to 26, and polio from 1,904 to 0. Measles deaths dropped from 468 in 1950 to 0 in 2008, the last year a United States death rate was recorded. It's not surprising that vaccinations have been touted as one of the top ten health achievements of the 20th century by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). • 3. What Makes An Effective Argument Ineffective? 1.The basic parts of an effective argument are a stated clearly defined issue, makes a claim, and offers support for that claim. Sometimes an argument may also recognize opposing viewpoints and incorporate them into the argument 2.What makes an argument ineffective is when using emotional appeals to distract a reader from a lack of evidence. Also the use of faulty reasoning, and inaccurate facts. 3.An issue is a problem, controversy, or an idea that people can have different viewpoints about. The term claim is a point in which a writer is trying to prove. This is typically the writer's viewpoint on the issue. A refutation is recognizing and auguring against opposing viewpoints. 4.A claim of value focuses on an opinion or judgment about Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. In order to have a good argumentative essay, there are a few important standards of critical thinking that is needed to be found in the essay such as the clearness, accuracy, importance or relevance, sufficiency, depth, breath and precision that is stated by Nosich. The strength of this argumentative essay is consider weak because it does not capture the interest of the reader and was not persuasive enough; even though from the introduction of the argumentative essay includes full sentences and a good opinion, the argumentative essay is all objective. The introduction includes too much of the emotional appeals, such as when it wrote " Day after day the number of people worshipping this icon has been growing since the birth of this creature. well to many it may seem harmless idol but in my opinion, Mickey Mouse is an 'devil in disguise' influencing the minds of young and old people to adopt the culture of the 'devil' which doesn't blend will with the moral values of society and should be banned". To improve the introduction, the writer should include of all objectives statements relative facts and appeals to the mind of people who agree or disagree with the topic. • 5. Argumentation Theory Vs. Argument Introduction Since the beginning of time, humans have made arguments. Arguments doesn't necessary mean that you disagree with someone, or want to attack someone else's opinions. It could just be something that you want to convince people is right, or it could be an argument just like you would think an argument between two people would be. As Toulmin states in his book The Uses of Argument, "Not every argument is set out in formal defense of an outright assertion"(Toulmin, 2003, pg 12). Sometimes an argument is just sharing a thought with someone who doesn't have those same thoughts. The argumentation theory has developed as humans and communication has, but it still has the basic principles that it had when it was invented....show more content... Nobody is making a valid argument. Instead they are making statements; statements that have no logical reasoning, or anything to back them up. Because of this, because nobody is making a valid argument as the argumentation theory states, we have people that just simply cannot respect one another's statements and points of view. As Argumentation Theory Stands Today Argumentation has been studied, and as I stated earlier, has evolved over the many years it has been studied. The most modern and well–known scientist that has had a major role in explaining argumentation theory is Stephen Toulmin. Toulmin breaks down the stages of an argument, and made a structure that if used, expresses the argumentation theory as the definition I described above states. He claims that if this structure is used, arguments will become more favorable to be accepted by others without that same idea (Toulmin, 2003). He breaks the structure down into six parts, all crucial to one another without any of them being able to stand alone without the other. The first thing in the structure is a claim, which he describes as purely a statement, meaning that without something to actually back it up, it means nothing (Toulmin, 2003). He then moves on to the ground or foundation of the argument. This is where you explain why your making the statement, why it means what your about to say it means (Toulmin, 2003). Then he moves on to warrant, or a justification of your claim, telling Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Argumentative Reflection Argumentative Essay Reflection One of my central struggles throughout high school has been writing essays and reports for all classes not just english. I was a little worried when I signed up to take this course, since it counted as a college credit. Even though I was worried about taking this course, but I am thankful that I did. The main reason behind my decision to take this course is because I thought it would better prepare me for college. This argumentative essay was one of the hardest essay that I have written. I have never written in this style before this essay. Even though, I have never been the best writer, I have always got good grades. After receiving my first rough draft I knew this class was not going to be easy. The part...show more content... One of the areas of my writing where I was struggling in using my voice. Granite, there were parts of my essay where I successfully integrated quotes within my voice, but for the most part that was my weakest area. For example of one of my better integrated quotes, in my third paragraph when I say, "Today, consumers rely on social media for everything, whether it is communicating with old friends, finding new friends, shopping, researching, and staying informed with the latest news. Daniel adds that, "'Americans who take part in political activities on social networking sites also tend to be highly active in other areas of political or civic life'" (29), which insinuates that people rely on social media more today than we have in the past". This was one of my better examples because I further explain and analyze the quote in my voice instead of just ending the sentence after the quote. One of my poor examples is, "Many people who suffer from depression care a lot about what others think about them. That is why many of those people tend to turn to social media as an outlet to express their feelings". I made a bold statement and did not back up what I said with my voice I just ended that sentence and moved on. Instead of moving on I should have explained it further and told them why people tend to turn to social media to express their feelings. • 7. Toulmin Essay On Argumentation Have you used this style of argumentation before in your studies or career (either verbally or in past writing assignments/projects)? Will you use it in the future? Why or why not? How will you incorporate your instructor's feedback in your Toulmin essay, assigned this week? What improvements do you hope to make in the Toulmin essay? In my personal opinion , I believe that Toulmin argumentation is used in everyday activities. I just did not know that the style had a name. In my day to day activities, I find myself explain the claims, warranty, and even debate when trying to explain why policy are put in place for safety measures. • 8. Three Spheres of an Argument According to Goodnight, there are three spheres of an argument. These spheres are personal, public and technical. Arguments in the personal sphere are often unrestricted and unsophisticated interactions with family and friends. Arguments in the technical sphere are based on a specific expertise or specialized knowledge. Arguments in the public sphere transcend private and specialized communities and engage the public at large. The public sphere provides a forum for the resolution of controversy and for public deliberation. Goodnight (1985) theorizes: Members of "societies" and "historical cultures" participate in vast and not altogether coherent superstructures which invite them to channel doubts through prevailing discourse practices. In the democratic tradition, we can categorize these channels as the personal, the technical and the public spheres. "Sphere" denotes branches of activity–the grounds upon which arguments are built and the authorities to which arguers appeal. (p.2) Goodnight contends that the independence of each of these spheres is governed by a different set of standards and thus is distinct from each of the others. For example "the independence of the spheres is protected by a variety of laws protecting privacy and discouraging government intervention in private affairs" (Goodnight, p.3). However, he also suggests that the borders between these spheres are not inflexible and at times argument can exist within multiple spheres simultaneously. • 9. Argumentative Essay On Global Warming Global warming, we see it as sad polar bears hopelessly swimming for their lives in the ocean. It's shown as rising sea levels that can washout entire cities. It even sometimes gets turned into politics but scientifically, what is the definition of global warming? It is the heating up the of Earth, caused by infrared radiation that gets stuck in our atmosphere because of the increase of CO2 put into the atmosphere. Infrared radiation is electromagnetic radiation that cannot be seen by the human eye, but we feel it as heat. Seems pretty logical doesn't it? To some it doesn't seem as reasonable. Some believe global warming isn't a man made problem, but just a cycle of 'weather patterns'. For example, our now president –Donald J. Trump– doesn't consider climate change to a threat to the inhabitants of earth. Our president also said that global warming is a 'hoax'. "Snowing in Texas and Louisiana, record setting freezing temperatures throughout the country and beyond. Global warming is an expensive hoax!" –Donald J. Trump This is what many people believe, and this tweet too seems pretty logical to a majority of people. But in 2014 January 29th when Donald J. Trump posted this tweet, there was record setting freezing temperatures happening nation and worldwide. But also 2014 was one of the top three hottest years on record. Now that doesn't seem like a 'hoax'. Humans don't like being wrong. It's embarrassing, uncomfortable to believe something and then be confronted about it. So that's why there's still high percentage of people who don't believe in the change in climate. People who work with oil companies don't want to acknowledge it because it can ruin their business. Politicians ignore the problem because it costs money to fix our past mistakes. That fear, people being scared, it makes us shut down. But we can try ignoring the problem, but the thing about problems is, they can be ignored but they never truly disappear. Weather may feel the same as every other year, but The whole world is heating up, including our vast oceans. Tropical hurricanes need to have surface water temperatures to be 26В°C or more for them to form. As our oceans get hotter hurricanes are able to form farther out in the sea Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. Argumentative Essay About Family When I hear the word family, I think of people who are are blood related, the people you live with, and the people you see all the time. They provide for you and embarrass you. People are also family, even if they aren't blood related, but are there for you no matter what and they mean everything to you. Family is always by your side when you need them. People hear family and think about parents, I hear family and think about my parents, aunts, cousins, friends, and my karate family. They are all so important to me and I don't know what I would do without them. On the other hand, Romeo and Juliet displayed family in an interesting way. When Juliet said she didn't want to marry Paris, her mother said she would disown her if she didn't do...show more content... Loyalty is sticking with the people who have hurt you or lost your trust. It's having someone's back even though they might've stabbed you in yours. When you have loyalty, you don't leave someone just because they said something mean about you or you heard something from someone else. They might have hurt you, or you might've gotten into an argument, but at the end of the day you will always be best friends. When you have loyalty is doesn't matter what they said or what they did, you love them anyway. Similarly, how Romeo and Juliet get married behind their parents' backs. Also, how when Romeo thought that Juliet was dead, he went and got a poison and killed himself. Another example is when Tybalt kept his loyalty to the Capulet family by killing Mercutio. When I hear the word trust I think of friends. You have to have a lot of trust in your friends and they need to be able to trust you. I have a huge amount of trust in my best friend, I tell her everything. There are some people who say that you can trust them, but then it turns out that you can't and they've told everyone your secret. I think that trust is confiding in a person or people that you know if you say, "don't tell anyone," they won't tell anyone. For instance, in Romeo and Juliet, Friar Laurence kept Romeo and Juliet's trust by not telling anyone about their marriage. I think that Romeo and Juliet trusted each other enough Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 12. The expression argument has two meanings in scholarly writing. First, it means a composition that takes a position on one side of a divisive issue. You might write an argument against the death penalty, or for or against censorship of pornography. But argument has another meaning, too. It means an essay that, simply, argues a point. You might assemble an argument about the significance of ancestor myths in a certain aborigine culture, or you might write an argument defending your understanding of any poem or essay that is read in your philosophy class. (Winthrop University) You are not necessarily taking one side of a divisive issue, but you are required to defend your points with credible evidence. You are taking a position. In a sense,...show more content... In emotionally stimulating situations, however, the audience will hold more sturdily to its beliefs the more strongly those beliefs are challenged. Young, Becker and Pike suggest breaking these barriers to communication by using a variation of Rogers' non–directive therapy. In "Communication: Its Blocking and its Facilitation," Rogers suggests that in emotional disputes, neither party should put forward a position until she has carefully, non–judgmentally and with the maximum possible empathy restated the position of the other, to the other's satisfaction. (Brent) This will convey to the other the sense that he is understood and that the two parties are more similar than different, thereby creating a context for communication. (Brent) Carl Rogers was born January 8, 1902 in Oak Park, Illinois, the fourth of six children. His education started in the second grade because he could already read before kindergarten. He spent his adolescence isolated, independent and self–disciplined. He went to the University of Wisconsin as an agriculture major, but later switched to religion to study for the ministry. He has been quoted as saying "that his new experiences so broadened his thinking that he began to doubt some of his basic religious views." (Boeree) Carl Rogers later married Ms. Helen Elliot and moved to New York to start school at the Union Theological Seminary, a famous liberal religious institution. • 13. Rhetorical Analysis Of Rogerian Argument My honest thought on argumentation prior to starting this course were that argumentation was going to very easy. I simply thought that it would consist of arguing with someone back and forth trying to get my point across. But i was wrong, base off my pro/con speech and the few chapters that we have covered i've realized that argumentation is more complex than what i had expected it to be. There is different ways that someone can go about when state their claim using Rogerian argumentations style or using Aristotle's rhetorical appeals or other forms of argumentation styles. After my speech i realized that a clear and controversial topic is needed in order to see both sides of the claim. Aside from a topic research is very important it must be credible the more credibility one has the better are your chances of persuading the audience. Now i see argumentation as a process of reasoning that must consist of organized information and credible sources. What surprised me about my topic was how hard it was trying to find credible information. There was a lot of information but a lot of it wasn't credible, there was also a lot of information but the data wasn't from the United States it was it foreign countries so it was no good for me. However i did find scholarly articles and other credible sources i just had to really dig to find the information. One thing that surprised me about my topic was that i didn't get more than 2 or 3 people who tried and rebuttal me. I had prepared Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 14. Argumentative Essay On Renewable Energy Renewability For nearly everyone on earth, fossil fuels are a part of our daily lives. Some of the more obvious places to find petroleum products would be gas and diesel in cars and trucks, but it is in more than just your tank. Without fossil fuels, we would not have things such as plastic to make a wide variety of things such as tires, kayaks, or even computers. The question remains, do we need fossil fuels? In this day and age, we have new energy sources that could be used to power our homes and transportation. Wind and solar power are used all over the world, but are still used far less than fossil fuels. Most would say it's not reliable or it doesn't make any profit. While both statements are true, it doesn't mean we can't make a better future using renewable energy. In fact, the only reason we don't use renewables for everything is that we don't want to change. The hard truth is we need to change. Fossil fuels are great right now, but if we run out, humanity must have another source of energy. Renewable energy may seem like a daunting task, but the benefits to humanity could be incredible. Public uses of renewable energy range from transportation all the way to heating and cooling. Everything we use could become less explosive and less expensive. Cities with a high concentration of people could become safer and healthier places to live. Transportation could be converted to electricity dramatically, improving smog conditions. Global warming may or may not Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 15. Argumentative Essay On Climate Change Climate change can be traced down to since the mid–1800s, when the industrial revolution first started taking place all around the world. Lives of human and animal species have been negatively affected since then, with events such as natural disasters, the melting of ice in polar regions, and change in weather and living conditions. Climate change in polar regions, in particular, has faced the most damage compared to any other region because of its location in regard to the sun. Climate change holds many different views and opinions about the effects, and even the existence itself, but evidence is clear and unmistakable in global ramifications and local impact in polar regions. "...Climate change [is] the 'greatest hoax ever perpetrated on the American people'", skeptics like Senator Inhofe of Oklahoma like to say. Climate change is change in climate patterns due to an increase in carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases produced by certain human activity. According to the National Snow and Ice Data Center, data taken by satellite has shown that the Arctic cover has decreased by 30% over the past 30 years, and this change, which also include change in sea ice and permafrost, in artic weather and climate is caused by humans. Although numerous scientists have confirmed the legitimacy of climate change, there are different views on whether climate change is real or not. Government officials like Senator Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma or Senator Marco Rubio of Florida have explicitly stated that they do not believe climate change is neither real, nor caused by humans (Tom McCarthy, 2014). On the other hand, mainstream media and other media outlets, such as The Independent and The Economist, have reported their findings of climate change and its legitimacy. The Independent (Conner, S. 2011) reported that records of these changes were taken by military submarines, land measurements, and satellite data to prove ice in polar regions are melting faster and faster. Satellites have tracked sea ice since the 1970s and by nuclear submarines since the Cold War, according to Peter Wadhams of Cambridge University and it was predicted that by September 2015, there would be no more sea ice. • 16. What Is An Argumentative Passage Analysis What is an argumentative passage analysis? In a passage analysis, you take some piece of written prose which contains an argument and extract the argument from it. In order to do this, you must identify the conclusion of the argument, as well as any premises that support the conclusion, and structure them in such a way that the argument is clearly valid (if indeed it is valid in the passage). Here is an example of an argumentative passage: Socrates is a man, and all men are mortal. As such, Socrates is mortal. Properly analysed, this passage could be put into premise–conclusion form as follows: Socrates is a man. All men are mortal. в€ ґ Socrates is mortal. That was an easy example. Sometimes it's more difficult to tell which claim is the conclusion and which are the premises. Consider: But of course, this argument is terribly misguided. After all, by any reasonable definition of the word "human," an unborn child of any age is as much a human as you or me. That is why abortion is never permissible. The aforementioned argument is right to say that it is never permissible to kill humans, but wrong to say that fetuses are not humans. This passage is much more difficult to formalize. The first problem we encounter is that it's not clear which sentence contains the thesis. We may be tempted to look towards the first and last sentences for a clue, but it seems unlikely that either of these is the main point being argued by the author. At the very least, those do not seem to be the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 17. Argumentative Essay On Family Vika Zelazny Prof. Rice English composition 1 26 September 2017 Families DNA does not define a family, love does. The average American citizen pictures the reason for adopting a child often negative. This image contains a man and a woman who cannot have children of their own, a single mother who will be unable to provide for the infant due to her young age, lack of financial support, or a variety of unfortunate circumstances. Adoption is one of the best options for a family who cannot have a child for whatever reason. The idea that every person, young or old, deserves a family to support, love and raise them is very important in life. Foster families, adoptive families and even blended families give children a great opportunity to have a forever family no matter what label is front of family. This relates to me because I went through different types of alternate families ever since I was a baby. No matter what type of alternate family one is a part of: a family is a family. If biological parents decide to give their child away, they can put their child in foster care until a forever family is found. In some cases, biological parents put children up for adoption for many good reasons. Sometimes biological parents cannot take care of a child for health, financial problems, or young age. A foster family is defined as a family that provides custody or guardianship for children whose parents are unable to look after them. Many foster families are temporary and many children go Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 18. Argumentative Essay On Human Nature This essay will argue that it is human nature for people, some more than others, to see themselves as more moral or prosocial than their peers. Numerous articles will be gathered to not only support but contradict this argument. These articles will be analysed and compared to produce a complete argument. The principal objective of the research conducted by Pedregon, C.A., Farley, R.L., Davis, A., Wood, J.M. & Clark, R.D. (2012), was to investigate the better than average effect (BTAE) using a questionnaire to establish if people rated themselves and their family members above average on socially desirable qualities. Pedregon et al (2012) questionnaire contained both the NEO Five Factor Inventory(NEO–FFI) and the Nonadaptive and Adaptive Personality (SNAP). Using both these methods to measure personality traits ensures that they obtain accurate findings which support their hypothesis and give us a good understanding of how people see themselves in relation to others. Pedregon et al (2012) found that participants were more likely to rate themselves as having socially desirable characteristics, this supports the BTAE and also strengthening the interpretation that it is human nature to consider yourself more moral or prosocial than your peers. Moreover, Pedregon et al (2012) sample size consists of 286 undergraduate university students which is a respectable sample size, however a wide range of the students were from Mexico, this is a limitation of the study as it could be Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 19. Examples Of Rogerian Argumentation Rogerian is a style of argumentation that does not take an adversarial approach. This style of argumentation moves away from a combative stance. The Rogerian argument consists of four parts: the introduction, context, writer's position, and benefits to the opponent. In "Is the College Use of American Indian Mascots Racist," Jane Willy does a great job of not taking a particular side and promoting ethical growth. Therefore, Willy effectively uses Rogerian argumentation to enhance his argument. In Willy's introduction, he introduces the controversy of how there are differing views regarding the mascot names of college teams. The author catches the audience's attention as he provides a story of his experiences with a particular football team at...show more content... This is supposed to show the opponent how they would benefit by agreeing with the writer's position. Willy proposes that he thinks "The voice of the Indians is the voice that should, finally, be listened to" (Willy, 2008, para. 6). This shows the opponent that if they adopt the writer's position, it would give the Indians the right to determine if the names of the mascots are racist. Also, Willy finds common ground between the opposing viewpoints and provides a compromise. He brings up the controversy regarding the North Dakota "Fighting Sioux." The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is considering taking this name away from them because of differences among the community. Will proposes that "If it can, and if the Sioux then agree to let the university use their image, the NCAA ought to withdraw its objection" (Willy, 2008, para. 7). Then, he states that if "The university cannot persuade the Sioux, well, the Fighting Sioux will just have to agree that they have lost this fight," come to a compromise, and "Take the name of the Hawks or the Eagles or of any other group that won't object" (Willy, 2008, para. 7). Willy provides a compromise for both sides that is Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 20. Jesus Argumentation This piece looks toward the beaten, contorted body of Christ, who is being presented to the people of Jerusalem before he was crucified. This forceful painting was probably an altarpiece. It was meant to appeal to the viewer's emotions. Inspiring empathy and reverence for Jesus's suffering. The calm resignation on Christ's face contracts with the agitated expressions of the other figures in the painting. In this way, the painting offers a means to contemplate our own humanity and Christianity's ultimate promise of eternal life after death. Get more content on HelpWriting.net
