1. DETAILS
My name is Tumisang Kekeli from DEP3 at Lesotho College of Education in
Thaba Tseka campus, I am going to present about heart.
2. INTRODUCTION
The heart is an organ about the size of your fist that pump blood throughout the body.
Or it is a muscle that pump the blood to all parts of the body.
3. LOCATION OF THE HEART IN THE BODY?
It is located between lungs in the middle of the chest, behind and slightly to the
left of the breastbone (sternum).
It is located slightly on the left side of the body, it sits between the right and left
lung. The left lung is slightly smaller to make room for the a heart in the left chest.
4. WHY IS IT LOCATED ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE
BODY
?
The narrow end of the roughly triangular heart is pointed to the left side and during
working, the concentration of the heart is most powerful at this end giving a feeling
that the heart is on the left side.
6. FUNCTION OF EACH PART OF THE HEART
Right ventricle: the lower right chamber the oxygen poor blood to the lung
through the pulmonary artery. The lung reload blood with oxygen.
Right atrium: receives blood full of oxygen from the lungs and then empties the
blood into the left ventricle.
Left ventricle: pumps the oxygen-rich blood through the aortic valve out to the rest
of the body.
Left atrium: after the lungs fill blood with oxygen the pulmonary veins carry the
blood to the left atrium. This upper chamber pumps the blood to left ventricle.
7. FUNCTIONS OF THE HEART TO THE BODY
Pumping oxygenated blood to other body parts.
Circulating hormones and other essential substances to different parts of the body.
Receiving oxygen-poor blood and pumping to the lungs for oxygenation,
transporting waste products from the body.
8. VALVES OF THE HEART AND THEIR FUNCTIONS
The tricuspid valve: this lies between the right atrium and the right ventricle. It prevents
blood flowing back into the right atrium. This is an atrioventricular valve.
The bicuspid/mitral valve: this lies between the left atrium and left ventricle. It prevents
blood flowing back into the left atrium. This is an atrioventricular valve.
The pulmonary valve: this lies between the right ventricle and the pulmonary artery. It
prevents blood flowing back artery. This is a semilunar valve.
The aortic valve: this lies between the left ventricle and the aorta. It prevents blood flowing
back into the left ventricle from the artery. This is a semilunar valve.
10. THE COMMON DISEASES OF THE HEART
Unstable angina
Heart attack
Heart failure
Arrhythmia(abnormal heart rhythms)
Valve disease
High blood pressure
Congenital heart conditions
stroke
11. CAUSES OF HEART DISEASE
Diet-food rich in fat, salt and sugar, as well as food containing alcohol, increases
the risk of angiosclerosis and can cause high blood pressure.
Diabetes-hypertension and blood glucose can lead to angiosclerosis and damage to
tunica intima.
Smoking-nicotine and carbon monoxide increase the heart rate, lower the oxygen
level in heart muscles and can cause thrombosis.
Life style: aspects of everyday life, from work stress to lack of exercise and
tension can increase the risk of heart diseases.
Genetics: people who have direct family members that have had heart disease are
at higher risk of developing it themselves.
Ageing: as people age their cardiovascular system become weak.
12. SYMPTOMS OF UNHEALTHY HEART
Chest pain, chest tightness, chest pressure and chest discomfort(angina).
Shortness of breath
Pain in the neck, jaw, throat, upper belly area or back.
Pain, numbness, weakness or coldness in the legs or arms if the blood vessels in
those body areas are narrowed.
13. KEEP YOUR HEART HEALTHY
Eat healthy
Get active
Quit smoking and stay away second-hand smoke
Stay healthy weight
Control your colostrol and blood pressure
Drink alcohol only in moderation
Manage stress
14. SIGNS OF HEALTHY HEART
A standard heart rate that ranges from 60 to 100 beats in a minute.
Normal breathing indicates your cardiovascular system is functioning normally.
Good oral health is linked with a healthy heart.
Normal blood pressure indicates the heart is in a healthy state.
15. CONCLUTION
The illness heart affect our lives. From clogged arteries to infections heart disease
covers a lot of ground. Its not just one thing, but a group of conditions that affect
