Activism or good citizenship?
The bipartisan Caucus for the Humane Bond is devoted to bringing a commonsense, scientific and rational dialogue to the issues surrounding the physical, emotional, and even medical connections between humans and animals.
The caucus will play an important role strengthening the humane bond between people and animals in working environments, our homes, hospitals, educational settings, the wild and agriculture, unleashing the power of our connection to benefit both and create healthy, sustainable and humane communities.

1 farmer fed 4 people in 1930; now feeds 155
22% of pop were farmers in 1930; now 2%
Cost 25% of our cash; now is 10% … lowest in the world.
These developments are through science and technology.
And 97% of farms are family owned
1 in 5 children is suffering from hunger…
Many organizations provide audits, not as many provide Animal Welfare Audits.
Some are very good partners to industry, working to help improve the welfare of animals.
Why are we different? Written for modern agricultural practices; small farmer or large farmer focused. 95% of food in the US is produced intensively; I would rather cover more animals with good welfare over “retro” practices.
GAP favors extensive production – access to outdoors for example. We acknowledge and accept confinement to get 9 Billion animals and covering more animals than other programs. Prep School Kids or Public School Kids.
All Farmer Focused.
Food should be safe and affordable and ethically raised.
Animal centric, measurable, reasonable, attainable, to incorporate large and small operations and ensure as many animals as possible can fall into the “flock” of

Enriched Colony Housing is the preferred housing in EU
-It’s the preferred method of housing hens according the Coalition for a Sustainable Egg Supply. 4 year study, comparing production methods for animal welfare, food safety, worker safety, sustainability and affordability.
The whole world is not gong to be cage free. The cost is too high. Meets qualifications for Prop 2 in CA –
OR/WA we assisted in drafting their legislation to allow Enriched Colony Housing.
**We collaborate with farmers and industry to create environments for animals. We don’t want to legislate, however we help when asked.

#1 agritourism place in the USA
"This is a historic day for American animal agriculture as we celebrate the marriage of the human treatment of animals and 21st-century pig farming," said Jon Hoek, vice president of pig production at Fair Oaks Farms. "We praise the leadership of Dr. Robin Ganzert and American Humane for upholding objective, science-based standards, which now confirm that Fair Oaks Farms is a responsible steward of the animals under its care at The Pig Adventure. Our American Humane Certification is good news for pigs, people, and the growing population of consumers that depend on us for ethically raised, affordable protein.“

Voluntary program. Here to help our customers do it – ie worker training. Shine a light on the best practices. We were the first to require for example a Zero Tolerance Policy. Whistleblower Policy. Etc.
We usually start with good farmers – they have accepted and met our standards before we come in and audit them. Good farmers know before they count because the birds/cows/pigs look good. You know when you step into the barn…
12% of hens are in cage free or pasture / free range / enriched colony
Pigs in gestation crates: Continuous crate usage do not allow pigs to have enough space, demonstrate natural behaviors, and access to other animals
Painful procedures – castration, dehorning.
We require our producers to provide a nest pad.
What does the consumer expect?
Organic standard is 2 sq ft
Our standard is 21.8 sq ft
Pasture: 108 sq ft
Better for the hens – you can rotate so you have good vegetation cover that meets consumer expectation for a trust label. Cant get by with 2 sq ft.

What Else can I do?
-Consider the consumer in everything we do
-Remember the Red Faced Test…. We need to tell our story without explaining away
-Step up to the plate. Share your practices by being open to a 3rd party auditing process.
