Over the course of the next few weeks, the students of St. Patrick School in North Hollywood,
Ca and the students of Mendez Fundamental Intermediate School in Santa Ana, Ca will be
engaged in a comparative analysis of slavery on southern plantations and working conditions in
the industrialized, northern mills. Both classes will be in dialogue with each other through this
process and will present their findings from their own classrooms through .
The big question is: How were laborers in each of these situations treated? Chose one of the
topics below to research and write about. You must write to become a class “expert” on the
topic you chose and be ready to present your findings to both classes.
1. Working Conditions --Factory and mills/Plantations---?
2. Economic conditions (including the following topics)
i. Pay or allowances?
ii. Was this enough to sustain livable conditions?—How? And Why?
iii. Other job opportunities? – Was this possible? Were there any?
3. Resistance –Were there any open resistors? What was the outcome?
