The Importance Of Teen Pregnancy
Although national teen birth rates have declined, the disparities in teen pregnancy rates still remain
high, especially for Hispanic teens. With 53% of Latinas in the United States become pregnant at
least once before age 20–nearly twice the national average, these girls have the highest risk of being
teen moms compared to other races and ethnicities (Rocca et al., 2010). Not only that teenage
childbirth can cause many harms in health and social relationships for both mom and baby, teen
moms have a higher risk of discontinuing their education, being single mothers, and becoming
welfare dependents. Nearly $11 billion per year was spent on teen pregnancy and childbirth due to
the increased expenses in health care for teen moms and babies, the loss of incomes and tax
revenues from teen moms since they are unable to work or work at low paying jobs. (National
Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy, 2011).
Recently, the Trump Administration does not want to continue funding for teenage pregnancy
prevention programs. According to Charo (2017), cutting teenage pregnancy prevention funding will
only make the problem worse when it comes to U.S. public and adolescent health. Without the
comprehensive sex education and access to reliable contraception, teenage pregnancy, birth, and
abortion rates in the United States would have increased for the last 4 decades. Some other possible
outcomes as the result of this discontinuation are the age at first sexual experience will be

Being a parent is very demanding and can be hard. The difficulties that come with an unplanned
pregnancy in teens can have a profound effect on their life. Their physical, social, mental, and
emotional health will all be affected by a sudden change in the course of their life. Teens impacted
with an unplanned pregnancy will have to give up many things in order to be a parent. In addition,
they will have to take on many more responsibilities that accompany pregnancy and parenthood. All
in all, having an unplanned pregnancy and becoming a parent introduce many new responsibilities
and difficulties. First off, an unplanned pregnancy has physical effects on a teen. The abdominal

As well as physical and social health, mental health is greatly affected by an unplanned pregnancy.
In fact mental health can be greatly influenced by physical and social health and interactions.
Exhaustion and weariness cause fatigue and can mentally wear you down. In addition, a lack of
social interaction can cause isolation from society. The troubles and impasses that come with
unplanned pregnancy can make a person depressed. Furthermore emotional health is also greatly
affected by unplanned pregnancy. Emotions that accompany pregnancy may include irritability,
depression, joy, and many others. In addition, women tend to have mood swings. Mood swings can
be very difficult to cope with, but there are methods for helping with them. These emotional
characteristics can cause an unstable personality.
The life of a parent is greatly different than that of a single person or couple. One has to give up
much to become a parent. In addition they must take on many new responsibilities, some more than
others depending on the situation, to care for a child. Some major responsibilities would include
supervision for the child while at school or work. Will a parent watch the child, or will the child
have to stay at daycare? Unplanned pregnancy is very stressful and causes many questions to be
asked and many ideas to be considered. Another huge responsibility is money. How will you provide
for the child? Do you have

When it comes to the topic of do TV shows like "16 and Pregnant" and "Teen Mom" promote or
discourage teenage pregnancy, most of us will readily agree that it in fact does promote teenage
pregnancy. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of how does this
promote teenage pregnancy. Whereas some are convinced that it promotes teenage pregnancy
through the fame some of the young couples have achieved, others maintain that it in fact
discourages teenage pregnancy by showing the struggles and realities of having a child at such a
young age. I agree that the show "16 and Pregnant" promotes teenage pregnancy because a new
Indiana University research study confirms it. According to Indiana University Telecommunications
professor, Nicole Martins, who surveyed 185 high school students that watch "16 and Pregnant" and
"Teen Mom," the results showed that, "Heavy viewing of teen mom reality programming positively
predicted unrealistic perceptions of what it is like to be a teen mother" (Martins 1). In other words,
many young teens do not comprehend the reality of being a teen parent. Heavy viewers of these
shows were more likely to think that teen parents have a lot of time to themselves, furthermore
thinking that teen moms are in a position to finish high school as well as work. While producers of
"16 and Pregnant" and "Teen Mom" went into the making of these shows with good intentions, by
trying to help teens discover the reality of becoming a teen parent,

Teenage Pregnancy And Teen Pregnancy
Teenage pregnancy is pregnancy in human females under the age of 20 at the time that the
pregnancy ends. Low–income communities have the highest teenage pregnancy rates in the United
States.
Because of the fact that this is a very controversial issue in the United States, it is very important
that most questions be addressed. Questions like, why is a teenage girl in Mississippi four times as
likely to give birth as a teenage girl in New Hampshire? Or why is the teen birth rate in
Massachusetts 19.6 per 1,000, while it's 47.7 per 1,000 in Washington, D.C.? And why, despite a 40
percent drop over two decades, are teen moms still far more common in the US than elsewhere
across the developed world? (Christian Science Monitor) All these questions surround the claim I'm
making; teenage pregnancy is conjoined with a set of issues that require closer attention than it is
receiving right now. Nationally, the birth rate for U.S. teens has plunged to record low levels, but a
new analysis shows that a disproportionate share of teen births are in rural communities. In 2010,
the birth rate for girls ages 15 to 19 in rural counties was 43 per 1,000, nearly one–third higher than
the rate for metropolitan counties (33 per 1,000), says a released report. Teenagers see the world in a
different way than adults; their perception is sharper and they are more prone to engage in activities
that don't conform to society's norms. Americans commonly believe that educational, social,

Dangers Of Teen Pregnancy
Pregnancy and sex–based diseases have become an unfortunate reality for teens in our society.
Sexually active teens as young as 13 years old are contracting harmful and dangerous diseases that
threaten their lives. Staggering amounts of teenagers, around three million, have unprotected sex,
from which they unfortunately contract STDs (Besharov 1). While some teenagers do not know the
dangers of unprotected sex, such as STDs, others just choose to ignore them (Basso 125). Teen
pregnancy is also very prevalent all over the world. Even though teen pregnancy rates in the United
States are at a low, teens that are not educated in safe sex are still at risk of becoming pregnant.
Some teens are even getting pregnant, just so they do not lose their boyfriend, or for attention. While
children are wonderful, many teens are not mentally and/or physically prepared for children so
young. For many people, it is believed that many teens are pressured to have unsafe and dangerous
intercourse by the media. Although some teens (13–19) have unprotected sex early on purpose,
many are influenced by sex–based commercials and advertisements because of lack of contraceptive
ads, parental control, and sexual content in movies and TV show. While some teens choose to have
unprotected copulation, or intercourse, many are not aware of the dangers because of lack of
contraceptive advertising. On primetime TV, an abundant amount of sexual content, without
contraceptive ads, can be found. Commercials on

The Effects Of Teen Pregnancy On Teens
Teen pregnancy is something that has become so common for these past years. Some teens that
engage in premarital sex are lucky enough to not end up pregnant, but there are those who are not as
fortunate. "3 in 10 teen American girls will get pregnant at least once before age 20. That's nearly
750,000 teen pregnancies every year" (11 Facts about Teen Pregnancy). Most of these teens
probably think that it won't happen to them, so they don't play it safe, but what they don't realize, is
that one little mistake can be a life changing experience. A reason to teen pregnancy is that teens
nowadays think that just because they are "in love" that they can completely give themselves to their
partner and at such a young age. Truth is, they most likely don't think about what can be the
consequences of engaging in risky activities like having unprotected sex. "A sexually active teen
who doesn't use contraceptives has a 90% chance of becoming pregnant within a year" (11 Facts
about Teen Pregnancy). They are just teens, still learning things about themselves on a day to day
basis, how can having unprotected sex be a norm for them, let alone raising a child. Peer pressure
can have a major role to this too because if they see their friends doing it, they may want to fit in so
that they can also say they have sex. Peer pressure can come from the friends or even from the
partner kind of pressuring her to have sex. "The Kaiser Family Foundation states that more than 29

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) the 2011 birth rate for teens was 31.3 births per
1000 women aged 15–19, a record low for the United States. However, there are many ways to
reduce the amount of teenage pregnancies (Trudeau). The United States has a problem of teenage
pregnancy occurring with the most occurring in the capital Washington D.C. where there are a
diverse group of teenagers (Dawani). This shows that our nation has a problem of teenage
pregnancy, but the most is in a well civilized area in our nation. Studies have shown that The highest
rate of teenage pregnancy in a developed country occurs in the United States with the rate of
teenagers being twice as likely to give birth compared to teens in Canada and ten times as likely as
teens in Switzerland showing that a diverse population has an effect on social behaviors (Dawani).
Our nation needs to find ways to decrease the alarming statistic. Studies have shown there has been
a decrease in teenage pregnancies.A recent article has shown the teen pregnancy rate is down nearly
40 percent and the teen birth rate has been cut by one–third since the early 1990s, but the problem is
still occurring today (Dawani). Teenage pregnancy in the United States is a problem with many
causes such as lack of education from parents and the education system, media influences, and the
cost of contraception used and many solutions to stop the epidemic. One cause of teenage pregnancy
is lack of education from

Teenage Pregnancy
According to cda.org, in 2013, a total of 273,105 babies were born to women that were in between
the ages of 15–19 years old. Teenage pregnancy is a major concern in today's society. This paper
will talk about teenage pregnancy, statistics, ways to prevent teenage pregnancy, and after birth
options. So why is teenage pregnancy so important? Some people are concerned about teens getting
pregnant at such an early age. There are other people that do not pay much attention to it because it
does not involve them. But what are people really saying about teenage pregnancy? According to
guardianlv.com, it is time to approach teenage pregnancy differently. People believe that in your
teenage years, that is when the body is the most youthful. A person's teenage years are when the
body is able to get back into shape a lot faster. The difference between today's generations and older
generations is that we do not carry on the same tradition of the grandparents claiming their
grandchildren. Usually in older generations, the youth would be the ones to have the babies, and the
older people would raise them and take care of them.
Today's society does not support teens having babies. We find it as being morally wrong. People's
responsibilities are different. Having a baby at such an early age is not meant to be for teenagers.

It takes two people to make a child. When commenting on teen pregnancy how society reacts would
suggest quite differently. " The media here is being extremely irresponsible by glamorizing teen
pregnancy. We can look forward to a reality show in about 18 years based on these children growing
up fatherless, as the cause of mommy's fame." These statement puts the accountability onto the
mother for the children being fatherless and profiting off of it, rather than acknowledging that it is
the father's responsibility to be present in his children's lives. Take for example, the ridicule that
women of all ages face when they choose adoption. We as a society are amazed that a mother could
even fathom to not want her child yet, it is quite the opposite with fathers. While a mother who
adopts is disgusting, a father who leaves their children is often blamed on the mother or, not even a
topic to begin with. The irony of the approval of men who engage in frequent sexual activities, as
well as being socially permitted and even endorsed to not take accountability for their actions is
unfathomable. There are thousands of excuses for men's abstinence in children's lives such as , "
guys take more time to grow up," to " guys just aren't wired to be parents like women are." Whereas,
with these teen mothers who have taken up the responsibility to be mature enough to provide for
their children are under constant scrutiny. Yet, the behavior and

Teen Pregnancy Causes
Some causes of Teen pregnancy are absent parenting, lack of knowledge, substance abuse, living in
poverty and peer pressure. The number of teens within the ages of 14–19 has substantially decreased
over the last several years. While examining the causes of teen pregnancy, new methods of
prevention can be defined. If there are different methods identified for preventing teen pregnancy
than the number of teens can go down more.
Absent parenting is one of the leading causes of teen pregnancy. Women who do not have both
parents in the picture are eight times more likely to become pregnant at a young age than someone
who has both parents. On account of absentee parents the time the parent leaves affect the risk that
the child has on becoming a teen parent. When a parent leaves or is present but does not engage with
the child, there is no one to lead by example. If there is no one for a teen to look up to they look for
an alternative that may not make the best choices. As a result of not having a parent present, when
the child executes a wrong decision, there is little to no discipline Decisions that are not in the best
interest of the teenager are likely to increase if they know there will be no punishment for their
actions. Also when there are not a present parent girls are prone to search for love in places that are
not healthy. While searching for love, girls often find men who are willing to take advantage of
them. The males in the relationship regularly start to push the

The Importance Of Teen Pregnancy
Disparities still persist to this day in social and economic context. The conditions that some
teenagers face in communities and families may contribute to teen pregnancy. Within the social
domain, peers are a big risk factor for teen pregnancy. Some factors include sexual pressure from
peers, belief that most peers are sexually active, friends who are sexually active, dating at an early
age, and dating someone who is a few years older than you (Southeastern Idaho Public Health, n.d.).
Many teenagers feel the pressure from their peers to have sex before they are ready. Those who
decide to give into peer pressure often are not informed about safe sexual behavior and therefore
may become pregnant. The same goes for those who believe that most of their peers are sexually
active. Surveys have shown that many teenagers report a greater percent than actual for the
following question: What percent of your peers do you think are sexually active? The pressure that
comes from assuming that most of your peers are sexually active can play a huge role in a teenager's
decision to participate in early sexual activity. Friends are just as much of a risk factor as family is.
If a friend is sexually active, the pressure to fit in and be similar to them starts developing. In these
peer situations, it is most likely a teenager's first time having sex. In that case, there is a lack of
knowledge that puts teenagers at risk of becoming pregnant. Dating at an early age can make a
teenager curious

Teen Pregnancy:
Babies Having Babies!

You're still a baby yourself! This is the first thought that comes to mind when I see a teenager with
child. Even though it's extremely disturbing to see, it has become more and more common these
days. Is this the new "trend"? Or should we question the parenting skills the child is receiving?
Maybe this girl has been messed with by a relative or a family member. Whatever the case maybe,
how can we help these kids in preventing pregnancy at an early age. Lets try to figure out where we
went wrong as parents, caregivers, nurses, etc. in raising and educating these babies about having
babies. In 2014, there were 24.2 births for every 1,000 adolescent females ages 15–19, that is 249,
078 babies born to females in this age range and nearly 89% of these birth occurred outside of
marriage (Office of Adolescent Health, 2016). According to the CDC, in 2015, a total of 229,715
babies were born to women aged 15–19 years, for a birth rate of 22.3 per 1,000 women in this age
group. What's even more disturbing, not all teen pregnancies are the their first pregnancy. In 2014,
one in six births (that's 17%) to these 15–19 year olds were females that who have already been
pregnant and have had one or two babies already (Office of Adolescent Health, 2016). Even though
we can't predict what a teenager would do or even make a teenage act accordingly when
unsupervised, we can instill in them factors that may just influence them in a positive way. "A child
plays attention to more than you think", is a phrase that i've heard many times from my elders; this
is a true fact. Children are very much aware of their surroundings, in which, plays a major role in
their upbringing. In saying this, many people, family members, and the communities that these teens
live in have been connected to these high numbers in these youth having babies. Social determinants
of health are conditions in the environments in which people are born, live, learn, work, play,
worship, and age that affect a wide range of health, functioning, and quality–of–life outcomes and
risks (CDC, 2016). Certain social determinants, such as high unemployment, low

Teen Pregnancy
Teen pregnancy is an issue in United States, it is one issue that should wait until teens are married
and know what they are doing with their lives. This issue came about in the early in the 1950's –
1960's. Teen pregnancy is a teenage girl between the ages 13–19 (girls who haven't reached
adulthood) having unwanted or wanted babies. Janet Bode once stated in her book, "Emotions run
everywhere, scared, sad, disappointment and preparation for what is about to happen" (Bode 51). If
we do not act now, teen pregnancy will be out the roof. Teen pregnancy needs a stop put to it no
matter what, teens are still children themselves and they are still learning how to take care of
themselves:
"One of the major concerns of having a child or becoming a parent is to do so when you're old and
mature enough to take on the responsibility. One of the problems in today's society is teenage
pregnancy. The risk of pregnancy in teenagers is increasing largely. Many teenagers don't know how
big of a responsibility it is to raise another human being when they themselves still have a lot of
growing to do. Teenagers need to be more educated about themselves and their bodies as well as
ways to protect themselves from getting pregnant if they're sexually active. Also, teenagers are more
prone to risks during a pregnancy than a twenty or thirty year old woman would be. Becoming a
teen parent automatically gives you a big responsibility to deal with. This means that all of your

Nutrition In Teen Pregnancy
Nutrition in Teen Pregnancy I chose the topic Nutrition in Teen Pregnancy because I find teen
pregnancy interesting. I find teen pregnancy interesting because it is something that until recently
was not heard of all the time. Over the past year's teen pregnancy has more or less become a "norm"
around the world.
When a teenager becomes pregnant most of the time, it is a surprise to them, and they had not
planned to be. The teen then has a big decision to make: keep the baby, give the baby up for
adoption or abort the baby (Planned Parenthood, 2017). If they choose to keep the baby or give the
baby up for adoption, they need to receive prenatal care. In cases where the teen has not planned to
become pregnant, they have not had any care trying to prepare for the baby so nutrition during a
pregnancy is extremely important. Many pregnant teens are willing to change their nutrition to
improve the chances of delivering a healthy child (Montgomery, 2003).
Most teens are aware that nutrition during pregnancy is important. However, these teens do not have
the knowledge of nutrition needed during pregnancy. When a teenager finds out that they are
pregnant, they need to start prenatal care. They first need to go to the doctor to have a check–up to
make sure both them, and the baby are healthy (Montgomery, 2003).
Teen pregnancies have many risks compared to adult pregnancies. If a pregnant teen does not
receive prenatal care, the baby is, "three times more likely to have a low birth

As a teen in this day and age, there's a huge stigma involving sex and pregnancy. It's often viewed as
wrong, gross, maybe even sinful. But teen pregnancies happen more often than you think, in fact
there's an estimated 229,715 babies born to mothers aged 15–19, in which the birth rate is 22.3 per
1,000 women in the US. Almost half of these women are then kicked out by their relatives and left
alone by their partner, left to fend alone by themselves. They tend to then drop out of high school
and work full time doing a minimum–wage job to care for their child, disrupting their social,
emotional, and physical well–being.
Imagine being pregnant in high school, the looks, the whispers, and the rumors spread all over the
school. Suddenly, because of your baby bump, you're a celebrity and everyone talks about you, most
of the time it isn't anything good. This can greatly affect a teen's social life in many ways, the first of
which being how they view you as an individual. Teen mothers are often viewed as sleazy, easy, and
most of the time a "slut" but this really isn't the case. Most teen pregnancies are because of uncareful
use of birth control products, or not using it at all. Unfortunately most people won't think that way,
your friends start to leave, less and less people start talking to you, but atleast you have your
boyfriend right? Wrong, 83% of teen pregnancies, the men in the relationship leave once the mother

Generally when a teen has a baby, society tends to make her seem like a monster, and that whatever
happened to cause this. She gets shunned and pushed into a dark place where she may not be
capable to provide the best care for herself or her baby. The duo may be ignored by their family and
friends, causing them to feel very isolated and alone, which could potentially lead to things such as
insanity, other mental health issues, or the worst case possible, death.
Unfortunately, if the teen gets to the point where she feels like there's no other option, she will most
likely turn to drugs and alcohol, making her situation even worse for herself and those around her. If
drugs or alcohol were involved before the teen knew she became pregnant, medical complications to
her or the baby are very likely. The teen has to stop drinking, or doing any type of drugs
immediately if she wants to keep her and her baby safe. If the mother gets hurt in anyway while she
is pregnant, she can potentially hurt and/or kill her baby. Birth deformities are common in mothers
who choose to not have a healthy lifestyle. Teen moms are more likely to have their babies born
early, have miscarriages, and underweight babies. This will lead to the need of more medical
attention, which leads to more money. If the teen mother does not have any help from parents,
family, or friends, she will most likely not be able to pay for it and could cause harmful things to

Introduction
Teen pregnancy is often unplanned and challenging for the future life of mother and child. The
increase risk of health problems for both mother and baby occur during teen pregnancy. Teen
pregnancy impacts adolescent development in all aspects: physical, emotional, cognitive, and social
development. Negative consequences result from teen pregnancy include: low income, increased
school dropout rates, lower educational levels, and increased rates of substance abuse (Garwood,
Gerassi, Reid, Plax & Drake, 2015).
Risk factors of teen pregnancy lead to risky behaviors that increase the likelihood of teen pregnancy.

issues. Researchers conducted a study that examined the physical and mental health outcomes
associated with teen pregnancy. Teen mothers were reported to have the poorest health of all women

postnatal care. Teen mothers may neglect their own physical health in efforts to care for their child.
Teen mothers' physical health problems may be linked to lack of financial resources for adequate

Does access to condoms prevent teen pregnancy?
Adolescent pregnancies remain a concern in public health worldwide. The World Health
Organization (WHO) has indicated that annually about 16 million girls between 15 and 19 give
birth. Indeed, in many countries policies and programs are developed and implemented for the
prevention of teen pregnancy and reduction of risks and consequences it might cause. Furthermore,
that a teenager becomes pregnant poses a risk to her health, her life and the fetus life. This situation
also brings complications at psychological, family and social level. Being a young mother can affect

A baby is a great responsibility that requires a lot of care and attention. Also, the cost involved is
high. For example, a study conducted in Europe shows that only 15 percent of adolescent
pregnancies are planned. In addition, half of all teenage pregnancies occur six months after a
teenager becomes sexually active (Miller 1997). Adolescent pregnancy is considered a risk to
maternal and child health, as well as a factor that contributes to the excessive growth of the
population, dropout, and the perpetuation of poverty, by limiting the possibilities for personal and
family development. Its causes are attributed mainly to early sexuality and lack of information and
access to contraceptive methods. Public and private health institutions of many Governments have
invested and developed numerous programs that seek to prevent pregnancy in adolescents. For
example, three different approaches have been used in North America to reduce these cases:
abstinence, safe sex education, and access to condoms in schools. Statistics have shown that some of
these programs do not generally have a significant improvement in the rates of pregnant adolescents.
However, programs with condom access policies have been shown to reduce pregnancy rates in that
population. In addition, widespread use of condoms is promoted in all areas not only to prevent
pregnancies but also as a method of preventing sexually transmitted diseases. In addition, scientific

Teens are younger, more energetic, and their bodies are still developing. When comparing the risks

associated with negligence, as well as being irresponsible. In American society sex education for
children is underdeveloped and instead society tends to use fear and shame to highlight/combat the
dangers of unsafe or underage sex. American society uses fear to instill the idea that if you become

To compliment narrative elements within a media text directors often utilize a variety of different
stylistic elements to enhance their stories. Stylistic elements help the audience get further into the
plot and relate themselves to the characters and their experiences. Stylistic elements thrive at
"creating the scene" because they are directly responsible for the sets at which the story is taking
place, the outfits worn which correlate with whats happening, as well as the music that plays in the
background to fill the scene with different emotions. "The Secret Life Of The American Teenager"
benefits greatly through its pairing of stylistic and narrative elements because they allow the story to
develop while creating a deeper meaning. The use of these elements enable the show to contradict
the current oppressive view of teenage pregnancy in society.
The show "The Secret Life Of The American Teen" uses its narrative and stylistic elements to
exemplify the success that can come regardless of teen pregnancy. The directors established the plot
early with the help of many stylistic elements. At first glance one can tell that Amy is super young
and conservative girl by her clothing. She was dressed like your average high schooler and this
provides to the suspense of the following scene. Amy telling her friends that she

Teen Pregnancy And Teenage Pregnancy
About one–third of American girls will become pregnant as teenagers (Kristof). Clearly, teen
pregnancy is a concern among many people in the U.S. One way to help the teen pregnancy
statistics would be birth control. Teenagers should have more access to birth control, particularly
LARCs (long–acting reversible contraceptives), and be more informed about it. There are many
reasons why this should be. For starters, it would help the child and the mother. It could also help
the U.S. not be so high on the list of number of teen pregnancies in the world. Over time, better
access to birth control could significantly decrease the number of teen moms. IUDs, short for
intrauterine devices, are a specific type of birth control that could further help this problem. Teens
would also be more likely to use birth control if they are informed about it. When teen girls become
pregnant, they are often hurting their own lives, as well as the lives of the children they're bringing
into the world. Imagine an adorable little baby, born to a mother that doesn't have the resources to
give the best life possible to him or her. Unfortunately, this is a sad reality for many children born to
teen moms. A teenager who has a baby often derails her own education and puts the child on a
troubled trajectory as well (Kristof). Childbearing during the teen years can carry health, economic,
and social costs for mothers and their children (Few Teens Use the Most Effective Types of Birth
Control). Children born

Today, one of the biggest problems among teenagers is teen pregnancy. Throughout high school and
college, teenagers are getting pregnant at an age they are incapable of taking care of a child. Along
with hearing about teens getting pregnant, television shows are displaying it to you like 16 and
Pregnant. Though the pregnancy rates have fallen over previous years, the United States still has the
highest rates than any other Western industrialized country. Along with the teen pregnancies comes
sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in a lot of cases, which American ranks first as well. With
implementation of curricular changes in schools, the rates of teen pregnancy and STDs can be
reduced, thus leading to things like less unwanted pregnancies and abortion. The range of age that is
considered for teen pregnancy is 15–19 years old. "In 2014, a total of 249,078 babies were born to
women aged 15–19 years, for a birth rate of 24.2 per 1,000 women in this age group." (Teen
Pregnancy in United States). "With respect to teen birth rates, in 2006, Sweden (6.0), and Canada
(13.7) had rates substantially lower than in England/Wales (35.0) and the U.S.A. (41.9)." (Barrett &
McKay, 42). The teen pregnancy numbers are broken down into five categories. The categories are
non–Hispanic whites, non–Hispanic blacks, Asian/Pacific Islanders, Hispanic, and American
Indian/Alaska Natives. Although any teen is at risk of teen pregnancy, any socioeconomically

"16 and Pregnant"/ "Teen Mom" Promote or Discourage Teenage Pregnancy? (Agree/Promote)
Whereas some are convinced that it promotes teenage pregnancy
through the fame some of the young couples have achieved, others maintain that it in fact
discourages teenage pregnancy by showing the struggles and reality of having a child at such a
young age. I agree that the show "16 and Pregnant" promotes teenage pregnancy because a new
Indiana University research study confirms it. Indiana University Telecommunications professor
Nicole Martins surveyed 185 high school students that watch the shows "16 and Pregnant" and
"Teen Mom". The results showed that, "Heavy viewing of teen mom reality programming positively
predicted unrealistic perceptions of what it is like to be a teen mother" (1). In other words, many
young teens do not comprehend the reality of being a teen parent. Heavy viewers of "16 and
Pregnant" and "Teen Mom" were more likely to think that teen moms have a lot of time to
themselves. Furthermore thinking that teen moms are able to finish high school and also work.

Every teen has dream about how they want to graduate from high school and then go to college, but
some teens are not willing to take the challenge. Some of these teens want to drop out of high school
and other teens want to keep furthering their education. For some there are obstacle that life throw at
them to be able to accomplish their goals. Earning an education is challenging enough, but when
there is a teen parent trying to finish their education it becomes more difficult than it would be for
ordinary teens. Education has had many impacts on teen parents trying to reach their future goals.

The government has added "no regrets" to schools, which is a program to give advice to teens about

The government has worked many ways to drop the rate of teenage pregnancy. In the 1996 the
government "the U.S. congress enacted welfare reform legislation" funded a program line no regrets
to promote "abstinence–only –until–marriage education" (Teenage) this is to help students in
schools see that they should wait to be married to have sex. This program did reduce the rates of
teenage pregnancies and until today many of these programs are in use today. There are government
programs that have been helpful toward reducing teenage pregnancy, but some of the programs are
actual schools that are based on helping the teen parents. As mentioned before "abstinence–only–

going on in Melba High School and it's a program that has been around for a while. This programs

Teens And Teen Pregnancy
As us females were young we all seem to become mothers, by playing with dolls, and playing house
with others our age. It may be easy for us to say that as children we thought they needed some
assistance, but in reality that was only our imagination. As little kids did we really think about what
it would be like to really have a baby? We were children, but see the thing here is that teens are still
children who are having other children. 16 year olds do not just wake up thinking they want to have
a baby, most of the time it just happens without being planned. Teens often do not think about what
life would be like as a parent which is easy to happen and we should be informed on the reasons
why and what it really is like. The first reason why a girl can easily get pregnant is not being
informed about contraceptives. There are about 1,700 school–based health centers nationwide in
which about ⅓ provide contraceptives. Sexual education is very important when it comes to this,
there are states that still require parents to sign off their children receiving any sexual education in
schools, in which many of the cases the parents and their kids are too embarrassed to talk about.
Although it is the parent's responsibility to talk about it, they do not. When a teen is sexually active,
it is important for them to let a parent know, so that they can get checked. Another possible reason
can be unwanted sex. According to Teenhelp.com four in ten girls first experience happens at age 13

In today's society teens are faced with many pressures. The effect of these pressures put on them, is
the inability to make right decisions when it comes to certain situations. One of the most common
situations teens find themselves in is becoming a parent at a young age, a result of pressure to have
sex from peers. Over the years, the numbers of teen pregnancy have indeed decreased, but in the
United States alone, teen pregnancies are at an all time high. A recent study conducted by Victor C.
Strasburger, a doctor at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine, concluded that of the
teen pregnancies, 95% of them are unplanned, and only a third of the pregnancies end with the
mother keeping the child. With statistics like these, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
All the pictures show in magazines is a happy Jamie Lynn with the father of her baby, out shopping
or going to the doctor. In the recent April issue of People Magazine, Spears was seen registering for
her baby shower at Babies R' Us. The article says the teen celebrity went on a shopping binge,
which in accuracy most young parents would never be able to afford. What these images don't
portray is what life would be like as a single mother, or the day to day hardships of actually being
pregnant. The other thing magazine articles and television shows do not portray adequately about
pregnancy is the emotional aspect. In all cases it is shown as a happy time for everyone. The
subjects of labor trauma, problems with the newborns, recovering from the delivery, or even the
postpartum emotions, seem to be avoided when it comes to the celebrity aspect. If Hollywood gave
an adequate portrayal of pregnancy, teens would not see it as "fun". But you do not see anywhere on
the cover or in the magazines about how Jamie Lynn can't wear her favorite jeans anymore, or is
forced to give up caffeine, junk food, long nights, and many other things that are part of the average
teenagers lifestyle. Society's standards today are a lot different then they used to be. It is no longer

Decline in Teen Pregnancy
The subject of teenage pregnancy can be a very taboo subject in the United States. Sadly, it seems a
lot of women that become pregnant while they're still young and not "ready" for a child end up
giving up on their futures. They must stay home to take care of their child, so some drop out of high
school, or they don't go to college, or they work a minimum wage part time job and barely scrape by
for the rest of their lives. This is not a way to live, and it shouldn't be a punishment for someone
who, more likely than not, had an unplanned baby while in their teen years. Thankfully, people have
taken notice in this and want to help. The government has made birth control more accessible,
schools have more rigorous sex education classes and sometimes provide free condoms to students,
and people have become more open to talking about sex and the consequences that may follow if
one is not careful. In the past 10 years alone, teenage pregnancy rates have dropped about 4% and
the accessibility to prevention methods made available by society has taken a very large part in the
decline.
Teenage pregnancy is currently at an all–time low in the United States. In 2016, 20 out of every
1,000 women aged 15–19 became pregnant (Hamilton, Martin, Osterman, Driscoll, & Rossen,
2017). In 2006, just 10 years prior, 60 out of every 1,000 women aged 15–19 were pregnant (Martin,

pregnant it doesn't mean their career is over. Some of the teen moms in the research have expanded
their education and some found work to support them and their child. The sex risk can lead to

In "CDC Fact Sheet: Information for Teens and Young Adults: Staying Healthy and Preventing

STDs each year in the United States, and about half of these are in people between the ages of 15
and 24.
STDs are sometimes curable but it at all depends on the disease, Gonorrhea is a disease that cannot

Teenage pregnancy has been famously depicted as a situation that involves the female adolescents.
For one to be dubbed as a pregnant teenager, she ought to be at the early age of twelve years though
in most scenarios it has been fourteen and older. In the developed as well as developing countries,
the cause of the teenage pregnancy has been common with most of them being related to the specific
situation of the teenager as well as the group that the teenager interacts with. However, the rate of
the teenage pregnancy has been varying from one nation to another nation and has been related to
the variance of the sexual activities, general sex education as well as contraceptives that are
accessible to the teenagers (Atkinson, et al, 2016). In ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Once the population of the pregnant teenagers is compared with all the teenagers, the once who have
been seen to be susceptible to getting pregnant are more likely to have come from the poor or the
low–income families and those who ends up giving birth having come from the disadvantaged
background (Putnam–Hornstein, et al, 2016).
One of the situations that have been seen to be common in southern California is that poorer
teenagers have always not been experienced sexually as teenagers from the advantaged families,
though they have been much likely to become pregnant once they engage in the sexual practice. The
teenagers that have been hailing from the families that are financially stable have been more likely
in terminating the pregnancy once they discover it as compared to those from the disadvantaged
families where the teenagers have been opting to wait for delivery s they cannot support the
termination of the pregnancy. It is a factor that has been supported by the proof of nearly seventy
percent of the high–income adolescents who become pregnant ending up in aborting. The figure is
very high as compared to that of the poor and low–income families that rage between 20 to 30
percent (Putnam–Hornstein, et al, 2013).

What is Teen Pregnancy? Teenage pregnancy is pregnancy in human females under the age of 20. A
girl can become pregnant from sexual intercourse after she has begun to ovulate which can be before
her first menstrual period, but usually occurs after the onset of her periods. In well–nourished girls,
menarche usually takes place around the age of 12 or 13. Most teenage girls don 't plan to get
pregnant, but many do. Teen pregnancies carry extra health risks to both the mother and the baby.
Often, teens don 't get prenatal care soon enough, which can lead to problems later on. They have a
higher risk for pregnancy–related high blood pressure and its complications. Risks for the baby
include premature birth and a low birth weight. The numbers of teenage pregnancy are very high but
when you think about the numbers most could have been prevented with the use of protection. Some
people may not afford condoms but if you cannot afford a condom you cannot afford a baby.
Children from homes ran by teenage mothers go through a hard time in life. Teenage mothers have
no time for other things, because they are busy taking care of their baby. Most teen mothers end up
dropping out of high school, because they do not have time for school anymore. Research shows
that reducing the number of births to teens and increasing the age at which a women gives birth
yields significant cost savings for the public sector. Efforts to reduce teen pregnancy are mainly

Teen pregnancy is something that affects over one million young teens in the United States. For
some, these pregnancies are planned but 85% of these teens the pregnancy is unplanned. This can
cause a lot of endless problems in the life of the teen and the newborn child. There are a lot of things
that can cause an unplanned teen pregnancy, such as teens experimenting with sexual encounters at a
young age. Another major cause is the lack of guidance due to guardians that are blind or do not
want to believe in such activities. These causes can have devastating effects on the teen and the
newborn in the household. Some effects of early pregnancy will include an unexpected rise of
responsibility for the teen and can cause many health concerns for both teen and newborn child.
Teens experimenting are the leading cause in the unplanned pregnancies. As a teenager in high
school ages there are a lot of peer pressures. Such as experimenting with alcohol and unprotected
sexual intercourse. Drinking and the use of narcotics also largely have an impact on the judgment of
the teen before the pre–pregnancy comes about. Experimenting can cause many effects on the teen
and the relationships at hand, including the relationships with the baby's mom or dad and also the
parents of the teens. Another way of experimenting is the pregnancy caused in the sequel of either a
long–time dating of the boyfriend or the other case of those random one night stands or hook–ups.

Teen pregnancy is not a subject to take lightly. Being in high school, students are held to high
standards. They are in fact young adults who are trying to build their success to go onto the next step
in life, but just one mistake can ruin everything. Having unprotected sex is the leading cause to
teenagers getting pregnant. Oral contraceptives are recommended if girls are sexually active, but
being on birth control does not give them one–hundred percent accuracy of not becoming pregnant.
A problem to teen pregnancies can be unprotected sex, as said in the first paragraph, that is the
number one cause to getting pregnant. When girls and boys become teenagers, their bodies start to
develop all of these hormones, and that is when people start taking the route of having sex. Having
sex can be a huge roller coaster, because not only are they giving themselves away to their partner,
they are putting their own life at risk. "Almost 1,700 teen girls get pregnant every single day" (Teen
Vogue). That is seventy girls every hour.
Not only can becoming pregnant be hard for the mother, but for the child too. The normal signs that
the teen may be pregnant can be that she misses her period or that she gets morning sickness.
Mothers may experience high blood pressure (hypertension), and they have a higher risk of
preeclampsia. This is a dangerous medical condition that combines high blood pressure

The Effects Of Teen Pregnancy On Teens
It takes a village to raise a child, or at least it was once believed to. It seems each year parents are
getting younger in age, and the birth rate is rising higher. Mississippi has the highest birth rates in
teen pregnancy, and has held this title for the past few years. This problem has had such a rise to
fame because this is a problem that can be prevented. Parents and communities should take action to
help lower the teen pregnancy birth rate in Mississippi. Since the birth rate in teens is so high that
means there is more need of government assistance. This becomes such a problem in states because
with more government assistance come more money, and in states like Mississippi, who is ranked as
one of the poorest states in America, this falls back on everyone. Even though the birth rate has
gotten out of control, teen pregnancy is 100% preventable. With the right knowledge and
explanations this problem could be incredibly reduced. Teen pregnancy becomes an even larger
problem because not only does it affect the families involved, but it affects the economy. According
to Newswire PR, "Mississippi has seen a 36% decline in the teen birth rate between 1991 and 2010."
(PR). Also it has been said that teen pregnancy could also cause higher rates with incarceration and
child welfare, which are the main concerns from the government (PR). For the past few years many
have tried to come up with solutions for teen pregnancy rates. One that comes across the board for
years is

Teen pregnancy is a societal concern and has been seen as an urgent social problem in the United
States since the 1970s (Coley & Chase–Lansdale, 1998). Among developed countries, the United
States ranks first in rates of both adolescent pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
(Stanger–Hall & Hall, 2001). American adolescents and adolescents of other industrialized countries
do not have very different patterns of sexual activity, however American teenagers' contraception
use is less consistent and effective (Coley & Chase–Lansdale, 1998). Nearly 50% of sexually
transmitted diseases are acquired by young men and women aged 15 to 24 (Satterwhite et al., 2013).
While teenage childbearing has decreased significantly in the past century, there has been an
increased rate of sexual activity, illegitimacy, and welfare receipt that raises public concerns (Coley
& Chase–Lansdale, 1998).
Teenage pregnancy leads to a plethora of negative consequences for both mother and child.
Educational effects include lower academic achievement and lower graduation rates (Coley &
Chase–Lansdale, 1998). According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], only
about 50% of teen mothers will receive a high school diploma by the age of twenty–two
("Reproductive Health", 2017). This is significantly lower than the 90% of women who earn a high
school diploma by age twenty–two and do not have a child in their adolescent years (CDC,

Teenage pregnancy is one of many issues that the United States has. It is one issue that can be fixed
easily and should be waited upon until teens are married and know what they are doing with their
lives. This issue came about in the early in the 1950's – 1960's. Teen pregnancy is a teenage girl
between the ages 13–19 (girls who haven't reached adulthood) having unwanted or wanted babies.
Janet Bode once stated in her book, "Emotions run everywhere, scared, sad, disappointment and
preparation for what is about to happen" (Bode 51). If we do not act now, teen pregnancy will be out
the roof. Teen pregnancy needs a stop put to it no matter what, teens are still children themselves
and they are still learning how to take care of themselves:
Becoming a

There are TV shows being made high–lighting teen pregnancy it's being freely talked about through
social media. With this type of promoting it's making young girls think teen pregnancy it's cute "Oh
I get to be on a show" is the new fun thing to do today. With them being so young, and naïve it is
easy to manipulate them. Recently recorded in 2011 the abortion rate in women aged from 15–44 is
13.9 per 1000 women. The ratio is 219 per 1000 live births. Teen pregnancy rate is a little bit more
updated in 2015 it was recorded that with 229,715 babies being born from women aged between 15–
19 years old. Teen pregnancy, and abortions are influenced by a lot of things. Men nowadays are a
lot more mature and know how to manipulate young girls to get them in bed, parents are sometimes
absent at home, and schools are no longer talking about the dangers of unprotected sex. While
unplanned teen pregnancy is a major problem in America today, so Is the high school dropout rate.
Over 1.2 million students' dropout in just the United States. That's seven thousand people a day.

Teenage Pregnancy And Teen Pregnancy
Teenage pregnancy is a prominent dilemma in our nation because it continues to place adolescents
into delinquency. According to the United States Health and Human Services, three out of ten
American teen girls will become pregnant at least once before they reach the age of twenty. That is
nearly 750,000 teen pregnancies in a year (1) (HHS Pg.2 2014). Also according to U.S. Department
of State, teen pregnancy budgets the United States and tax payers approximately seven billion
dollars annually (2) (USDS pg. 1 2013). Teen pregnancy is a phenomenon in which a female
individual, usually between the ages of thirteen through nineteen become pregnant before they have
reached the legal adulthood. Many times these adolescents are not prepared to become parents. They
have not completed their education, are mentally young, have very few or no marketable skills and
abilities to survive in the real world, and they are financially dependent upon their parent or
caretaker.
Unfortunately, teen pregnancy and delinquency has been occurring for centuries. There have been
numerous studies done in order to present this issue. Countless teens become pregnant at a young
age due to many mechanisms. However, the experts believe most of those teens are lacking
important attention and consideration from their homes. Therefore, teenage girls tend to reach out
attention from other supplementary sources. In the academic journal article, "The Relationships

The Importance Of Teen Pregnancy

  • 1. The Importance Of Teen Pregnancy Although national teen birth rates have declined, the disparities in teen pregnancy rates still remain high, especially for Hispanic teens. With 53% of Latinas in the United States become pregnant at least once before age 20–nearly twice the national average, these girls have the highest risk of being teen moms compared to other races and ethnicities (Rocca et al., 2010). Not only that teenage childbirth can cause many harms in health and social relationships for both mom and baby, teen moms have a higher risk of discontinuing their education, being single mothers, and becoming welfare dependents. Nearly $11 billion per year was spent on teen pregnancy and childbirth due to the increased expenses in health care for teen moms and babies, the loss of incomes and tax revenues from teen moms since they are unable to work or work at low paying jobs. (National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy, 2011). Recently, the Trump Administration does not want to continue funding for teenage pregnancy prevention programs. According to Charo (2017), cutting teenage pregnancy prevention funding will only make the problem worse when it comes to U.S. public and adolescent health. Without the comprehensive sex education and access to reliable contraception, teenage pregnancy, birth, and abortion rates in the United States would have increased for the last 4 decades. Some other possible outcomes as the result of this discontinuation are the age at first sexual experience will be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Teen Pregnancy Essay Being a parent is very demanding and can be hard. The difficulties that come with an unplanned pregnancy in teens can have a profound effect on their life. Their physical, social, mental, and emotional health will all be affected by a sudden change in the course of their life. Teens impacted with an unplanned pregnancy will have to give up many things in order to be a parent. In addition, they will have to take on many more responsibilities that accompany pregnancy and parenthood. All in all, having an unplanned pregnancy and becoming a parent introduce many new responsibilities and difficulties. First off, an unplanned pregnancy has physical effects on a teen. The abdominal area will enlarge and in effect, there will be weight ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As well as physical and social health, mental health is greatly affected by an unplanned pregnancy. In fact mental health can be greatly influenced by physical and social health and interactions. Exhaustion and weariness cause fatigue and can mentally wear you down. In addition, a lack of social interaction can cause isolation from society. The troubles and impasses that come with unplanned pregnancy can make a person depressed. Furthermore emotional health is also greatly affected by unplanned pregnancy. Emotions that accompany pregnancy may include irritability, depression, joy, and many others. In addition, women tend to have mood swings. Mood swings can be very difficult to cope with, but there are methods for helping with them. These emotional characteristics can cause an unstable personality. The life of a parent is greatly different than that of a single person or couple. One has to give up much to become a parent. In addition they must take on many new responsibilities, some more than others depending on the situation, to care for a child. Some major responsibilities would include supervision for the child while at school or work. Will a parent watch the child, or will the child have to stay at daycare? Unplanned pregnancy is very stressful and causes many questions to be asked and many ideas to be considered. Another huge responsibility is money. How will you provide for the child? Do you have ... • 5. Teenage Pregnancy And Teen Pregnancy When it comes to the topic of do TV shows like "16 and Pregnant" and "Teen Mom" promote or discourage teenage pregnancy, most of us will readily agree that it in fact does promote teenage pregnancy. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of how does this promote teenage pregnancy. Whereas some are convinced that it promotes teenage pregnancy through the fame some of the young couples have achieved, others maintain that it in fact discourages teenage pregnancy by showing the struggles and realities of having a child at such a young age. I agree that the show "16 and Pregnant" promotes teenage pregnancy because a new Indiana University research study confirms it. According to Indiana University Telecommunications professor, Nicole Martins, who surveyed 185 high school students that watch "16 and Pregnant" and "Teen Mom," the results showed that, "Heavy viewing of teen mom reality programming positively predicted unrealistic perceptions of what it is like to be a teen mother" (Martins 1). In other words, many young teens do not comprehend the reality of being a teen parent. Heavy viewers of these shows were more likely to think that teen parents have a lot of time to themselves, furthermore thinking that teen moms are in a position to finish high school as well as work. While producers of "16 and Pregnant" and "Teen Mom" went into the making of these shows with good intentions, by trying to help teens discover the reality of becoming a teen parent, ... • 7. Teenage Pregnancy And Teen Pregnancy Teenage pregnancy is pregnancy in human females under the age of 20 at the time that the pregnancy ends. Low–income communities have the highest teenage pregnancy rates in the United States. Because of the fact that this is a very controversial issue in the United States, it is very important that most questions be addressed. Questions like, why is a teenage girl in Mississippi four times as likely to give birth as a teenage girl in New Hampshire? Or why is the teen birth rate in Massachusetts 19.6 per 1,000, while it's 47.7 per 1,000 in Washington, D.C.? And why, despite a 40 percent drop over two decades, are teen moms still far more common in the US than elsewhere across the developed world? (Christian Science Monitor) All these questions surround the claim I'm making; teenage pregnancy is conjoined with a set of issues that require closer attention than it is receiving right now. Nationally, the birth rate for U.S. teens has plunged to record low levels, but a new analysis shows that a disproportionate share of teen births are in rural communities. In 2010, the birth rate for girls ages 15 to 19 in rural counties was 43 per 1,000, nearly one–third higher than the rate for metropolitan counties (33 per 1,000), says a released report. Teenagers see the world in a different way than adults; their perception is sharper and they are more prone to engage in activities that don't conform to society's norms. Americans commonly believe that educational, social, medical, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Dangers Of Teen Pregnancy Pregnancy and sex–based diseases have become an unfortunate reality for teens in our society. Sexually active teens as young as 13 years old are contracting harmful and dangerous diseases that threaten their lives. Staggering amounts of teenagers, around three million, have unprotected sex, from which they unfortunately contract STDs (Besharov 1). While some teenagers do not know the dangers of unprotected sex, such as STDs, others just choose to ignore them (Basso 125). Teen pregnancy is also very prevalent all over the world. Even though teen pregnancy rates in the United States are at a low, teens that are not educated in safe sex are still at risk of becoming pregnant. Some teens are even getting pregnant, just so they do not lose their boyfriend, or for attention. While children are wonderful, many teens are not mentally and/or physically prepared for children so young. For many people, it is believed that many teens are pressured to have unsafe and dangerous intercourse by the media. Although some teens (13–19) have unprotected sex early on purpose, many are influenced by sex–based commercials and advertisements because of lack of contraceptive ads, parental control, and sexual content in movies and TV show. While some teens choose to have unprotected copulation, or intercourse, many are not aware of the dangers because of lack of contraceptive advertising. On primetime TV, an abundant amount of sexual content, without contraceptive ads, can be found. Commercials on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. The Effects Of Teen Pregnancy On Teens Teen pregnancy is something that has become so common for these past years. Some teens that engage in premarital sex are lucky enough to not end up pregnant, but there are those who are not as fortunate. "3 in 10 teen American girls will get pregnant at least once before age 20. That's nearly 750,000 teen pregnancies every year" (11 Facts about Teen Pregnancy). Most of these teens probably think that it won't happen to them, so they don't play it safe, but what they don't realize, is that one little mistake can be a life changing experience. A reason to teen pregnancy is that teens nowadays think that just because they are "in love" that they can completely give themselves to their partner and at such a young age. Truth is, they most likely don't think about what can be the consequences of engaging in risky activities like having unprotected sex. "A sexually active teen who doesn't use contraceptives has a 90% chance of becoming pregnant within a year" (11 Facts about Teen Pregnancy). They are just teens, still learning things about themselves on a day to day basis, how can having unprotected sex be a norm for them, let alone raising a child. Peer pressure can have a major role to this too because if they see their friends doing it, they may want to fit in so that they can also say they have sex. Peer pressure can come from the friends or even from the partner kind of pressuring her to have sex. "The Kaiser Family Foundation states that more than 29 percent of ... • 13. Teenage Pregnancy And Teen Pregnancy According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) the 2011 birth rate for teens was 31.3 births per 1000 women aged 15–19, a record low for the United States. However, there are many ways to reduce the amount of teenage pregnancies (Trudeau). The United States has a problem of teenage pregnancy occurring with the most occurring in the capital Washington D.C. where there are a diverse group of teenagers (Dawani). This shows that our nation has a problem of teenage pregnancy, but the most is in a well civilized area in our nation. Studies have shown that The highest rate of teenage pregnancy in a developed country occurs in the United States with the rate of teenagers being twice as likely to give birth compared to teens in Canada and ten times as likely as teens in Switzerland showing that a diverse population has an effect on social behaviors (Dawani). Our nation needs to find ways to decrease the alarming statistic. Studies have shown there has been a decrease in teenage pregnancies.A recent article has shown the teen pregnancy rate is down nearly 40 percent and the teen birth rate has been cut by one–third since the early 1990s, but the problem is still occurring today (Dawani). Teenage Pregnancy And Teen Pregnancy Maria Isabel Terrazas English 4 Miss Stahlecker 4 November 2015 Teenage Pregnancy According to cda.org, in 2013, a total of 273,105 babies were born to women that were in between the ages of 15–19 years old. Teenage pregnancy is a major concern in today's society. This paper will talk about teenage pregnancy, statistics, ways to prevent teenage pregnancy, and after birth options. So why is teenage pregnancy so important? Some people are concerned about teens getting pregnant at such an early age. There are other people that do not pay much attention to it because it does not involve them. But what are people really saying about teenage pregnancy? According to guardianlv.com, it is time to approach teenage pregnancy differently. People believe that in your teenage years, that is when the body is the most youthful. A person's teenage years are when the body is able to get back into shape a lot faster. The difference between today's generations and older generations is that we do not carry on the same tradition of the grandparents claiming their grandchildren. Usually in older generations, the youth would be the ones to have the babies, and the older people would raise them and take care of them. Today's society does not support teens having babies. We find it as being morally wrong. People's responsibilities are different. Having a baby at such an early age is not meant to be for teenagers. • 17. Teen Pregnancy And Teenage Pregnancy n the mainstream news, young mothers have received surplus attention due to the large scale viewers of MTV's shows Teen Mom and 16 and Pregnant. Fox News, leaning far right on the political spectrum commented about the extensive publizity. When the stars from these reality shows made front page on US Weekly and People's magazine Fox News posted an article in response," Tabloids Glamorizing Teen Pregnancy By Putting Teen Moms on Covers." Young teens who became pregnant and now a part of mainstream culture sex is the highlighted deviance described in this article. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It takes two people to make a child. When commenting on teen pregnancy how society reacts would suggest quite differently. " The media here is being extremely irresponsible by glamorizing teen pregnancy. We can look forward to a reality show in about 18 years based on these children growing up fatherless, as the cause of mommy's fame." These statement puts the accountability onto the mother for the children being fatherless and profiting off of it, rather than acknowledging that it is the father's responsibility to be present in his children's lives. Take for example, the ridicule that women of all ages face when they choose adoption. We as a society are amazed that a mother could even fathom to not want her child yet, it is quite the opposite with fathers. While a mother who adopts is disgusting, a father who leaves their children is often blamed on the mother or, not even a topic to begin with. The irony of the approval of men who engage in frequent sexual activities, as well as being socially permitted and even endorsed to not take accountability for their actions is unfathomable. There are thousands of excuses for men's abstinence in children's lives such as , " guys take more time to grow up," to " guys just aren't wired to be parents like women are." Whereas, with these teen mothers who have taken up the responsibility to be mature enough to provide for their children are under constant scrutiny. Yet, the behavior and ... • 19. Teen Pregnancy Causes Some causes of Teen pregnancy are absent parenting, lack of knowledge, substance abuse, living in poverty and peer pressure. The number of teens within the ages of 14–19 has substantially decreased over the last several years. While examining the causes of teen pregnancy, new methods of prevention can be defined. If there are different methods identified for preventing teen pregnancy than the number of teens can go down more. Absent parenting is one of the leading causes of teen pregnancy. Women who do not have both parents in the picture are eight times more likely to become pregnant at a young age than someone who has both parents. On account of absentee parents the time the parent leaves affect the risk that the child has on becoming a teen parent. When a parent leaves or is present but does not engage with the child, there is no one to lead by example. If there is no one for a teen to look up to they look for an alternative that may not make the best choices. As a result of not having a parent present, when the child executes a wrong decision, there is little to no discipline Decisions that are not in the best interest of the teenager are likely to increase if they know there will be no punishment for their actions. Also when there are not a present parent girls are prone to search for love in places that are not healthy. While searching for love, girls often find men who are willing to take advantage of them. • 21. The Importance Of Teen Pregnancy Disparities still persist to this day in social and economic context. The conditions that some teenagers face in communities and families may contribute to teen pregnancy. Within the social domain, peers are a big risk factor for teen pregnancy. Some factors include sexual pressure from peers, belief that most peers are sexually active, friends who are sexually active, dating at an early age, and dating someone who is a few years older than you (Southeastern Idaho Public Health, n.d.). Many teenagers feel the pressure from their peers to have sex before they are ready. Those who decide to give into peer pressure often are not informed about safe sexual behavior and therefore may become pregnant. The same goes for those who believe that most of their peers are sexually active. Surveys have shown that many teenagers report a greater percent than actual for the following question: What percent of your peers do you think are sexually active? The pressure that comes from assuming that most of your peers are sexually active can play a huge role in a teenager's decision to participate in early sexual activity. Friends are just as much of a risk factor as family is. If a friend is sexually active, the pressure to fit in and be similar to them starts developing. In these peer situations, it is most likely a teenager's first time having sex. In that case, there is a lack of knowledge that puts teenagers at risk of becoming pregnant. • 23. Teen Pregnancy Teen Pregnancy: Babies Having Babies! Deondra Crenshaw Virginia College Nur. 2320 10/4/2017 You're still a baby yourself! This is the first thought that comes to mind when I see a teenager with child. Even though it's extremely disturbing to see, it has become more and more common these days. Is this the new "trend"? Or should we question the parenting skills the child is receiving? Maybe this girl has been messed with by a relative or a family member. Whatever the case maybe, how can we help these kids in preventing pregnancy at an early age. Lets try to figure out where we went wrong as parents, caregivers, nurses, etc. in raising and educating these babies about having babies. In 2014, there were 24.2 births for every 1,000 adolescent females ages 15–19, that is 249, 078 babies born to females in this age range and nearly 89% of these birth occurred outside of marriage (Office of Adolescent Health, 2016). According to the CDC, in 2015, a total of 229,715 babies were born to women aged 15–19 years, for a birth rate of 22.3 per 1,000 women in this age group. What's even more disturbing, not all teen pregnancies are the their first pregnancy. In 2014, one in six births (that's 17%) to these 15–19 year olds were females that who have already been pregnant and have had one or two babies already (Office of Adolescent Health, 2016). Even though we can't predict what a teenager would do or even make a teenage act accordingly when unsupervised, we can instill in them factors that may just influence them in a positive way. "A child plays attention to more than you think", is a phrase that i've heard many times from my elders; this is a true fact. Children are very much aware of their surroundings, in which, plays a major role in their upbringing. In saying this, many people, family members, and the communities that these teens live in have been connected to these high numbers in these youth having babies. • 25. Teen Pregnancy Teen pregnancy is an issue in United States, it is one issue that should wait until teens are married and know what they are doing with their lives. This issue came about in the early in the 1950's – 1960's. Teen pregnancy is a teenage girl between the ages 13–19 (girls who haven't reached adulthood) having unwanted or wanted babies. Janet Bode once stated in her book, "Emotions run everywhere, scared, sad, disappointment and preparation for what is about to happen" (Bode 51). If we do not act now, teen pregnancy will be out the roof. Teen pregnancy needs a stop put to it no matter what, teens are still children themselves and they are still learning how to take care of themselves: "One of the major concerns of having a child or becoming a parent is to do so when you're old and mature enough to take on the responsibility. One of the problems in today's society is teenage pregnancy. The risk of pregnancy in teenagers is increasing largely. Many teenagers don't know how big of a responsibility it is to raise another human being when they themselves still have a lot of growing to do. Teenagers need to be more educated about themselves and their bodies as well as ways to protect themselves from getting pregnant if they're sexually active. Also, teenagers are more prone to risks during a pregnancy than a twenty or thirty year old woman would be. Becoming a teen parent automatically gives you a big responsibility to deal with. • 27. Nutrition In Teen Pregnancy Nutrition in Teen Pregnancy I chose the topic Nutrition in Teen Pregnancy because I find teen pregnancy interesting. I find teen pregnancy interesting because it is something that until recently was not heard of all the time. Over the past year's teen pregnancy has more or less become a "norm" around the world. When a teenager becomes pregnant most of the time, it is a surprise to them, and they had not planned to be. The teen then has a big decision to make: keep the baby, give the baby up for adoption or abort the baby (Planned Parenthood, 2017). If they choose to keep the baby or give the baby up for adoption, they need to receive prenatal care. In cases where the teen has not planned to become pregnant, they have not had any care trying to prepare for the baby so nutrition during a pregnancy is extremely important. Many pregnant teens are willing to change their nutrition to improve the chances of delivering a healthy child (Montgomery, 2003). Most teens are aware that nutrition during pregnancy is important. However, these teens do not have the knowledge of nutrition needed during pregnancy. When a teenager finds out that they are pregnant, they need to start prenatal care. They first need to go to the doctor to have a check–up to make sure both them, and the baby are healthy (Montgomery, 2003). Teen pregnancies have many risks compared to adult pregnancies. If a pregnant teen does not receive prenatal care, the baby is, "three times more likely to have a low birth ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 29. Essay On Teen Pregnancy As a teen in this day and age, there's a huge stigma involving sex and pregnancy. It's often viewed as wrong, gross, maybe even sinful. But teen pregnancies happen more often than you think, in fact there's an estimated 229,715 babies born to mothers aged 15–19, in which the birth rate is 22.3 per 1,000 women in the US. Almost half of these women are then kicked out by their relatives and left alone by their partner, left to fend alone by themselves. They tend to then drop out of high school and work full time doing a minimum–wage job to care for their child, disrupting their social, emotional, and physical well–being. Imagine being pregnant in high school, the looks, the whispers, and the rumors spread all over the school. Suddenly, because of your baby bump, you're a celebrity and everyone talks about you, most of the time it isn't anything good. This can greatly affect a teen's social life in many ways, the first of which being how they view you as an individual. Teen mothers are often viewed as sleazy, easy, and most of the time a "slut" but this really isn't the case. Most teen pregnancies are because of uncareful use of birth control products, or not using it at all. Unfortunately most people won't think that way, your friends start to leave, less and less people start talking to you, but atleast you have your boyfriend right? Wrong, 83% of teen pregnancies, the men in the relationship leave once the mother tells them they're pregnant. Due to the lack of commitment ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Although this may be what the majority of mothers think, teen moms may have a different perspective. They might have been forced into pregnancy and the child may be a reoccurring thought of what happened to her. Chances are the teen will love her baby in the long run, but in the beginning the teen most likely had different views. Teen pregnancy is a worldwide problem that needs to be educated properly. Generally when a teen has a baby, society tends to make her seem like a monster, and that whatever happened to cause this. She gets shunned and pushed into a dark place where she may not be capable to provide the best care for herself or her baby. The duo may be ignored by their family and friends, causing them to feel very isolated and alone, which could potentially lead to things such as insanity, other mental health issues, or the worst case possible, death. Unfortunately, if the teen gets to the point where she feels like there's no other option, she will most likely turn to drugs and alcohol, making her situation even worse for herself and those around her. If drugs or alcohol were involved before the teen knew she became pregnant, medical complications to her or the baby are very likely. The teen has to stop drinking, or doing any type of drugs immediately if she wants to keep her and her baby safe. If the mother gets hurt in anyway while she is pregnant, she can potentially hurt and/or kill her baby. Birth deformities are common in mothers who choose to not have a healthy lifestyle. Teen moms are more likely to have their babies born early, have miscarriages, and underweight babies. This will lead to the need of more medical attention, which leads to more money. If the teen mother does not have any help from parents, family, or friends, she will most likely not be able to pay for it and could cause harmful things to occur to her ... • 43. Teen Pregnancy And Teenage Pregnancy About one–third of American girls will become pregnant as teenagers (Kristof). Clearly, teen pregnancy is a concern among many people in the U.S. One way to help the teen pregnancy statistics would be birth control. Teenagers should have more access to birth control, particularly LARCs (long–acting reversible contraceptives), and be more informed about it. There are many reasons why this should be. For starters, it would help the child and the mother. It could also help the U.S. not be so high on the list of number of teen pregnancies in the world. Over time, better access to birth control could significantly decrease the number of teen moms. IUDs, short for intrauterine devices, are a specific type of birth control that could further help this problem. Teens would also be more likely to use birth control if they are informed about it. When teen girls become pregnant, they are often hurting their own lives, as well as the lives of the children they're bringing into the world. Imagine an adorable little baby, born to a mother that doesn't have the resources to give the best life possible to him or her. Unfortunately, this is a sad reality for many children born to teen moms. A teenager who has a baby often derails her own education and puts the child on a troubled trajectory as well (Kristof). Throughout high school and college, teenagers are getting pregnant at an age they are incapable of taking care of a child. Though the pregnancy rates have fallen over previous years, the United States still has the highest rates than any other Western industrialized country. Along with the teen pregnancies comes sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in a lot of cases, which American ranks first as well. With implementation of curricular changes in schools, the rates of teen pregnancy and STDs can be reduced, thus leading to things like less unwanted pregnancies and abortion. The range of age that is considered for teen pregnancy is 15–19 years old. "In 2014, a total of 249,078 babies were born to women aged 15–19 years, for a birth rate of 24.2 per 1,000 women in this age group." (Teen Pregnancy in United States). (Agree/Promote) When it comes to the topic of do TV shows like "16 and Pregnant" and "Teen Mom" promote or discourage teenage pregnancy, most of us will readily agree that it in fact does promote teenage pregnancy. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of how does this promote teenage pregnancy. Whereas some are convinced that it promotes teenage pregnancy through the fame some of the young couples have achieved, others maintain that it in fact discourages teenage pregnancy by showing the struggles and reality of having a child at such a young age. I agree that the show "16 and Pregnant" promotes teenage pregnancy because a new Indiana University research study confirms it. Indiana University Telecommunications professor Nicole Martins surveyed 185 high school students that watch the shows "16 and Pregnant" and "Teen Mom". The results showed that, "Heavy viewing of teen mom reality programming positively predicted unrealistic perceptions of what it is like to be a teen mother" (1). • 51. Teens And Teen Pregnancy As us females were young we all seem to become mothers, by playing with dolls, and playing house with others our age. It may be easy for us to say that as children we thought they needed some assistance, but in reality that was only our imagination. As little kids did we really think about what it would be like to really have a baby? We were children, but see the thing here is that teens are still children who are having other children. 16 year olds do not just wake up thinking they want to have a baby, most of the time it just happens without being planned. Teens often do not think about what life would be like as a parent which is easy to happen and we should be informed on the reasons why and what it really is like. The first reason why a girl can easily get pregnant is not being informed about contraceptives. There are about 1,700 school–based health centers nationwide in which about ⅓ provide contraceptives. Sexual education is very important when it comes to this, there are states that still require parents to sign off their children receiving any sexual education in schools, in which many of the cases the parents and their kids are too embarrassed to talk about. Although it is the parent's responsibility to talk about it, they do not. When a teen is sexually active, it is important for them to let a parent know, so that they can get checked. Another possible reason can be unwanted sex. According to Teenhelp.com four in ten girls first experience happens at age 13 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

What these images don't portray is what life would be like as a single mother, or the day to day hardships of actually being pregnant. The other thing magazine articles and television shows do not portray adequately about pregnancy is the emotional aspect. In all cases it is shown as a happy time for everyone. • 55. Teen Pregnancy Decline in Teen Pregnancy The subject of teenage pregnancy can be a very taboo subject in the United States. Sadly, it seems a lot of women that become pregnant while they're still young and not "ready" for a child end up giving up on their futures. They must stay home to take care of their child, so some drop out of high school, or they don't go to college, or they work a minimum wage part time job and barely scrape by for the rest of their lives. This is not a way to live, and it shouldn't be a punishment for someone who, more likely than not, had an unplanned baby while in their teen years. Thankfully, people have taken notice in this and want to help. The government has made birth control more accessible, schools have more rigorous sex education classes and sometimes provide free condoms to students, and people have become more open to talking about sex and the consequences that may follow if one is not careful. In the past 10 years alone, teenage pregnancy rates have dropped about 4% and the accessibility to prevention methods made available by society has taken a very large part in the decline. Teenage pregnancy is currently at an all–time low in the United States. In 2016, 20 out of every 1,000 women aged 15–19 became pregnant (Hamilton, Martin, Osterman, Driscoll, & Rossen, 2017). A girl can become pregnant from sexual intercourse after she has begun to ovulate which can be before her first menstrual period, but usually occurs after the onset of her periods. While teenage childbearing has decreased significantly in the past century, there has been an increased rate of sexual activity, illegitimacy, and welfare receipt that raises public concerns (Coley & Chase–Lansdale, 1998). Teenage pregnancy leads to a plethora of negative consequences for both mother and child. Educational effects include lower academic achievement and lower graduation rates (Coley & Chase–Lansdale, 1998). According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], only about 50% of teen mothers will receive a high school diploma by the age of twenty–two ("Reproductive Health", 2017).
