Teaching Vocabulary Reflection
This was my last written assignment for this course, where a classmate
and I had to focus on one system of the language and explain how to effectively
teach it. Here, we explain how to teach vocabulary considering ideas from three
authors, Lewis, Moras and Nation. It also included a Prezi presentation which
we had to explain in front of the class.
This essay was useful for me because I was able to acquire strategies for
teaching vocabulary in my lessons. Since this is what a language is composed
of, it is an essential element; hence, I need to teach it taking into account that
the meaning, form and use of a single word are important for the right
acquisition of the word. I noticed that students need to know what a lexical item
means, for this reason I need to provide a suitable context and encourage the
use of dictionary so the learner will know how and when to use it.
Furthermore, this essay made me realize that if students efficiently learn
a considerable amount of words, the acquisition of the new language will
become effective. I have always seen that students usually acquire a word and
they forget it afterwards, so if I want to avoid this happening I must ensure that
my lesson has meaningful, organized and useful material for them, and I also
have encourage learners to constantly use these new words so they don’t forget
it easily.
