Teaching Vocabulary To Advanced Students: A Lexical Approach

This reflection will explain about the text “Teaching Vocabulary To Advanced Students”
how important is the preparation of students to have success and how difficult it could be.
Moreover, it will indicate their most important ideas that we have to take into account at the
moment we teach; it is a good contribution for us as future teachers to be prepared to fulfill
the necessities of our students.

Going through the beginning of the text it tell us that teaching vocabulary to English
students is limited, students can learn a lot of vocabulary , recognize the item and recognize
its meaning, however, they have to being able to use them appropriately. Here is when us
as teachers have to take into account several aspects of lexis at the moment to teach our
students (ex: style, register, dialect, synonymy, chunks, grammar, and pronunciation). The
text tell us that we must take into account the kind of items that we are going to teach, if the
items are meaningful for students they are going to learned it easily and retain in their
minds. Moreover, we have to take in consideration that if we are going to teach new
vocabulary we have to be careful in the number of chunks because if this number exceeds
seven it could be difficult for our students learn it, even to us is difficult to maintain new
items in our minds. Another important thing that we have to consider is to foster learners’
independence making them use their dictionaries, guided discovery, contextual guesswork
and knowledge of word formation.

The text is a good element for our learning; it is totally relevant with the course lexical
analysis because we are learning new items and to understand the meaning of these words
in a real context we have to make use of our dictionaries also we have to work in pairs to
exchange knowledge and to understand unknown items.

To end up, in my opinion as future teachers is necessary to know as much as possible to be
able to fulfill the necessities of our future students, the most important aspect that we have
to develop is teach depending of the skills and environment of the student, it could be a
hard work but our labour is that our students learn this language as well as possible.

                                                         Ana Luna Pedrero.
