2. History and Location of Saltaire Mill & Village
Saltaire is a museum and village outside the town of Bradford, Shripley
and Otley.
The mill was first built in 1850 by Titus Salt to bring local community of
wool and timber to the Bradford Canal and the River Air. The mill was
seen by Titus until his death in 1878, the mill was continued by his family
and friends until 1978.
After the mill closed down in 1978, the mill became a museum for the
public to see and also a photography museum to house the works of David
Hockney.
3. Who was Titus Salt?
Titus Salt was born in 1803 to a rich family near Bradford. Titus
learnt how to work with people in the mill and the village of
Saltaire.
When he built the church and mill, nearly 2,400 people and
1.100 visitors came to a banquet in the mill for the opening
ceremony.
In 1878, Titus got very old and died at the age of 73, eh was
buried in the church at Saltaire in a grand mausoleum watched
by 100,000 people who came to see his funeral service and
procession.

4. Saltaire Museum in the 21’st Century- A World Heritage Site
Saltaire is a popular visitors attraction and world heritage site.
The museum allows people to see the history of the mill on white
boards and videos. There are 2 shops and 2 cafes plus a
photography museum.
You can also walk out to the Union Reformed Church at Saltarie
which was built by Titus and this is where he is buried in the
church with his family.
