E-learning involves using technology to enable learning anywhere and anytime. It first began in Bangladesh in 1956 through radio broadcasts and expanded with the establishment of BOU in 1992. E-learning can improve education quality by allowing students control over their schedule, self-paced learning, and interactive learning aided by multimedia. It also reduces costs and increases communication between students and teachers. While e-learning faces challenges like lack of immediate feedback, preparing instructors for the new format, Bangladesh is increasing technology access and many students now use e-learning systems to enhance their education.
1. E-learning:
The term ‘e-Learning’ means ‘electronic Learning’ that encompasses all forms of
technology enhanced learning. e-Learning is the use of technology to enable people to
learn anytime and anywhere. It is also known for letting students acquire knowledge just
in time, enabling continuous interaction between the e-system and learner.
E-learning in Bangladesh
The e-learning was first introduced in Bangladesh in 1956 by a radio-broadcasting
program, and later expanded much by the establishment of BOU in 1992.
The education sector of Bangladesh has been suffering from many deficiencies including
quality teachers, quality content and quality environment. So, at present great challenge
faced by Bangladesh is to create a 'Knowledge based Society'.Thats why e-learning is
very important for bangladesh education system.Generally e-Learning is seen as offering
solutions to several challenges currently facing in education sector.
e-Learning can improve the quality of education by:
* giving control to students over when and where they study
* allowing students to study at their own pace
* providing a student centred learning environment
* providing attractive multimedia learning without any tutor
* making it easier to amend and update materials
* creating an environment that promotes an active approach to learning
* reducing learning time
* releasing time for more active, engaging and interactive forms of teaching
* supporting increased communications between staff and students.
* providing frequent and timely individual feedback
* supporting and encouraging collaborative learning
* encouraging students to take responsibility for their own learning.etc.
* Cost effective for learners
It’s a matter of pleasure that the present Government of Bangladesh declared a vision to
build ‘Digital Bangladesh’ by 2021. The term ‘Digital Bangladesh’ has four inter-related
components.Digital education is one of them. Computer Literacy and the availability and
use of computers and ICTs are integral to the Digital Education component of the Digital
Bangladesh, which requires restructuring the education system to ensure equity in terms
of access to quality education (Raihan, 2009). So, this vision will come into light if the
non-government organizations integrate ICTs(information and communication
technology).
READINESS COMPONENTS WITH RESPECT TO
BANGLADESH: e-Learning readiness mean “mental or physical preparedness for that
organization for some e-Learning experience or action”.
2. Business Readiness:
In Bangladesh, organizations who are competing too much, are in the area of
telecommunication and information technology, garments industries etc. Among them
telecommunication and information technology related organizations provide training for
their employees in a regular basis to achieve the strategic goal. For the training purpose
they arranges in house training and/or outdoors training. By these training they make
their employee expert. If e-Learning could be provided on those organizations, then the
interested employees could avail the training based on their own interests and build the
expertise on fields they like most.
Technology Readiness:
E-Learning is based on the technology involved with computer and internet. From the last
few years the computer and internet technologies in Bangladesh becoming cheaper and
easy to access due to engagement of both the public and private organizations. Beside
this the technology awareness of people are rapidly increasing.
Content Readiness:
To make the e-Learning process effective and popular, the content should be provided in
Bangla language in Bangladesh. Some universities also offer course materials to their
students through intranet. Now in case of introducing e-Learning we have to take an
initiative to review all those existing material .
Other readiness are :
Training Process Readiness.
Culture Readiness.
Financial Readiness.etc.
Disadvantage of e-learning: There are some problem of e-learning.
*Lack of immediate feedback in asynchronous e-learning.
*Increased preparation time for the instructor.
*potentially more frustration, anxiety and confusion. Etc.
Although there are some problem in e-learning , but the benefits of e-learning is more.
In Bangladesh now-a-days many students use e-learning system. Even many universities
today encouraging students to use the e-learning system which will be very effective for
our future education system. .
