The drivers of revolutionary movements and change differ among countries in Latin America, such as in Mexico, Cuba and Nicaragua. However, there are some common features that explain why violence and revolutionary governments emerge. Also, revolutionary violence often did not lead to the consolidation of revolutionary governments. In the post-Cold War period, with the exception of Cuba, revolutionary governments began a tumultuous process of democratic transition that led to very imperfect democracies, including the rise of caudillismo – Mexico being somewhat at outlier, at least until the rise of President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. Answer the following questions: 1. What are the common drivers of revolutionary change and why are there such few examples of consolidation of revolutionary governments (Mexico, Cuba and Nicaragua being the exceptions? 2. Format of the exam: bring at least one blue book. You are allowed to bring an outline for the long essay.
Each outline for each question should be no longer than one page: one side only and one outline per
page. During the exam, only the outline of the question chosen will be allowed so make sure you
prepare them in separate sheets. Read the instructions carefully and make sure to ask all the pertinent
questions before the day of the exam. Feel free to email me any questions about the exam. I am happy to look
at drafts of the outlines. Your deadline to submit a draft is Thursday, December 12 at noon.
The final exam will consist of three main parts:
Section A: long essay, worth 40 points
Section B: short essay, worth 25 points
Section C: multiple choice, worth 35 points
Section A: long essay, worth 40 points. Two of the following six questions will appear on the exam. You will
have to choose only ONE. Plan to allocate around 45/60 minutes to respond to this question. Write the
outline at home, read it several times to make sure it discusses all the relevant material and become very
familiar with it. Try to use examples from the sources discussed in class, the readings, and the lectures.

The Marxist theory’s most fundamental principle is that it, ‘… sought to transform capitalist Europe into a cooperative commonwealth of freethinkers, and often called “socialism” or “communism.” (p. 135). The theory was that everyone would work for the better good of the state and others. The major pillars of Marxism and production are culture, politics and the natural climate. Marxism created tension in these three spheres as Wolff and Resnick (2012) say,
This in turn implies that the economy is always in a state of tension and change. A change in climate will favor some kinds of production and distribution and inhibit others. Changing political trends will favor and inhibit certain kinds of production and distribution. Changing cultural patterns too will stimulate some kinds of production and distribution and stifle others. (p. 144)
Besides the tension in the three spheres, another reason why Marxism collapsed especially in Russia is due to mismanagement and corruption. Marxism states that the fundamental power is to be given to workers and overproduction is supposed to benefit them. However this was not the case in Russia whereby greedy heads of government took over the benefits that came with the laborer’s work.

In understanding the process of rapid transformation of economic systems in many nations in the world from the beginning of 1990s, briefly explain why freedom to choose the right theoretical foundations still do matter to develop an appropriate economic system for economic growth and better income distribution of a society.
The freedom to choose the right theoretical foundations to follow as a nation whether neoclassic, Marxism or Keynesian theory is fundamental because it affects how people in the country see the world. For example Americans who live in a capitalist society view the world differently to Russians who are socialists and communists. Wolff and Resnick (2012) say that,
It follows that individuals will likely act differently depending on which theory they use in thinking about the economic aspects of their lives and social surroundings. As with theories people use to understand other objects of interest. to them (love, nature, politics, etc.), economic theories have conscious and unconscious effects on how people think and act. (p. 348)
Due to the fact that the economic system that the people of a country will choose will affect their lives, they should be the ones to develop an economic system that they feel will be of most benefit to them.

Each outline for each question should be no longer than one page: one side only and one outline per

The Marxist theory’s most fundamental principle is that it, ‘… sought to transform capitalist Europe into a cooperative commonwealth of freethinkers, and often called “socialism” or “communism.” (p. 135). The theory was that everyone would work for the better good of the state and others. The major pillars of Marxism and production are culture, politics and the natural climate. Marxism created tension in these three spheres as Wolff and Resnick (2012) say,
This in turn implies that the economy is always in a state of tension and change. A change in climate will favor some kinds of production and distribution and inhibit others. Changing political trends will favor and inhibit certain kinds of production and distribution. Changing cultural patterns too will stimulate some kinds of production and distribution and stifle others. (p. 144)
Besides the tension in the three spheres, another reason why Marxism collapsed especially in Russia is due to mismanagement and corruption. Marxism states that the fundamental power is to be given to workers and overproduction is supposed to benefit them. However this was not the case in Russia whereby greedy heads of government took over the benefits that came with the laborer’s work.

The freedom to choose the right theoretical foundations to follow as a nation whether neoclassic, Marxism or Keynesian theory is fundamental because it affects how people in the country see the world. For example Americans who live in a capitalist society view the world differently to Russians who are socialists and communists. Wolff and Resnick (2012) say that,
It follows that individuals will likely act differently depending on which theory they use in thinking about the economic aspects of their lives and social surroundings. As with theories people use to understand other objects of interest. to them (love, nature, politics, etc.), economic theories have conscious and unconscious effects on how people think and act. (p. 348)
Due to the fact that the economic system that the people of a country will choose will affect their lives, they should be the ones to develop an economic system that they feel will be of most benefit to them.

Studying the experience in the quarter century since the fall of the Berlin Wall, Simeon Djankov shows that the post-communist economic project has been more successful than the political project. It appears that while post-communist reformers more or less knew how to do economic reform, few had any idea how to build democracy. As a result, the divergence in democracy and political rights is 3 to 4 times larger than the divergence in economic freedom and the ease of doing business. The analysis suggests that democracy is not harder to predict than economic evolution—history predicts it well. However, at the start of post-communist transformation social scientists just didn’t know how to predict political evolution. Recent authoritarian regressions in Hungary and Poland, countries with successful economic reforms, present a new challenge to researchers.

ABSTRACT
The Emergency Department (ED) is a key source of care for
victims of sexual violence but there is little information available about
the extent to which EDs are prepared to provide this care. This study
examines the structural and process factors that the ED has in place to
assist victims. A survey of all 82 publicly accessible EDs in the
Commonwealth of Virginia was conducted (RR 76%). In general, the
EDs provide the recommended medical care to victims. However, at
least half do not have the needed resources in place to effectively assist
victims and most (80%) do not provide regular training to their medical
staff about sexual violence. Further, almost one-quarter do not have a
relationship with a local rape crisis center. It is recommended that each
ED partner with local rape crisis centers to provide training to their
staff and to ensure continuity of support for victims. It is also
suggested that the state government explore ways in which a forensic
(SANE) nurse be made available to every victim of sexual violence that
presents to the ED for medical assistance. Ideally, each ED would
become part of a community-wide Sexual Assault Response Team

(SART) in order to provide comprehensive care to victims and
thorough evidence collection and information to law enforcement.
INTRODUCTION
This study seeks to examine the extent to which
Emergency Departments (EDs) in the Commonwealth of
Virginia are prepared to provide care for victims of sexual
violence through an examination of both structural and
process factors that are currently in place. Many studies
indicate that sexual violence victimization has both long-
term and short-term health consequences (Plichta and Falik,
2001; see also Rentoul and Applebloom 1997; Cloutier,
Martin and Poole, 2002; Bohn and Holz, 1996). The ED is
a key source of care for victims of sexual assault. It is one
of the first points of entry to care. Competent care by
professionals trained in treating sexual assault victims is
critical to the timely recovery of physical and mental
health. The ED also plays a critical role in the collection of
evidence that may lead to the conviction of the perpetrator
and a recent study found that specially trained (forensic)
nurses perform this function significantly better than do
other staff (Sievers, Murphy and Miller, 2003). Forensic
nurses are registered nurses (R.N.’s) who have advanced
training in the examination of sexual assault victims; this
includes training on legal aspe.

The elements of design are some of the basic building blocks that make up the design or artwork.
Understanding and using this terminology can help the designer articulate what works and what doesn’t

DEFINITIONS:
A Point is a position in space.
A Line is the path of a moving point. Two points connected make a line. Lines often imply motion, and can
be rendered in a variety of ways. Contour lines or outlines, define the boundary between shapes. Lines can
create texture or value when used in crosshatching. In addition to these types of actual lines, our eyes can
invent implied lines, such as in dotted lines, or where area boundaries describe lines that may not be there.
Shape is a two dimensional form. The variety of possible shapes is endless. Several common ones are as
follows:
• Simple Geometric: circles, squares, triangles are some of the examples.
• Complex Geometric: straight and curved shapes that have more sides and angles.
• Curvilinear: French curves, ellipses, circles and ovals used in combination.
• Accidental: an example of this might be a coffee ring or paint splatters.
Form is a shape with dimension, an object existing in three dimensional space physically or implied.
Value is the tone created by black, white and shades of gray. The value or tone of an element can create
mass, dimension, emphasis or volume.
Texture can be actual or visual.
• Actual texture is tactile: you can feel it by touching it.
• Visual texture are the markings of a two dimensional artwork that imply actual texture.
Space is an illusion or feeling of 3-dimensionality, which can be created in a two-dimensional design in
several ways, for example:
• Overlapping one object in front of another;
• Using differences in value, amount of detail, etc. between elements;
• Using techniques related to linear perspective, such as differences in size or height on page between
elements

ABSTRACT
Creating and running software produces large amounts of raw data
about the development process and the customer usage, which can
be turned into actionable insight with the help of skilled data scien-
tists. Unfortunately, data scientists with the analytical and software
engineering skills to analyze these large data sets have been hard to
come by; only recently have software companies started to develop
competencies in software-oriented data analytics. To understand
this emerging role, we interviewed data scientists across several
product groups at Microsoft. In this paper, we describe their educa-
tion and training background, their missions in software engineer-
ing contexts, and the type of problems on which they work. We
identify five distinct working styles of data scientists: (1) Insight
Providers, who work with engineers to collect the data needed to
inform decisions that managers make; (2) Modeling Specialists,
who use their machine learning expertise to build predictive mod-
els; (3) Platform Builders, who create data platforms, balancing
both engineering and data analysis concerns; (4) Polymaths, who
do all data science activities themselves; and (5) Team Leaders,
who run teams of data scientists and spread best practices. We fur-
ther describe a set of strategies that they employ to increase the im-
pact and actionability of their work.

1. INTRODUCTION
Software teams are increasingly using data analysis to inform their
engineering and business decisions [1] and to build data solutions
that utilize data in software products [2]. The people who do col-
lection and analysis are called data scientists, a term coined by DJ
Patil and Jeff Hammerbacher in 2008 to define their jobs at
LinkedIn and Facebook [3]. The mission of a data scientist is to
transform data into insight, providing guidance for leaders to take
action [4]. One example is the use of user telemetry data to redesign
Windows Explorer (a tool for file management) for Windows 8.
Data scientists on the Windows team discovered that the top ten
most frequent commands accounted for 81.2% of all of invoked
commands, but only two of these were easily accessible from the

team redesigned the user experience to make these hidden com-
mands more prominent.

However, there are some common features that explain why violence and revolutionary governments emerge. Also, revolutionary violence often did not lead to the consolidation of revolutionary governments. In the post-Cold War period, with the exception of Cuba, revolutionary governments began a tumultuous process of democratic transition that led to very imperfect democracies, including the rise of caudillismo – Mexico being somewhat at outlier, at least until the rise of President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. Answer the following questions: 1. What are the common drivers of revolutionary change and why are there such few examples of consolidation of revolutionary governments (Mexico, Cuba and Nicaragua being the exceptions? 2. Mexico and Nicaragua democratized but Cuba did not. What variables explains Cuba’s resistance to democratic change? 3.
