Summer 2011
1. Summer 2011- Reflection on My Experience
Being in the RISE Program during the summer of 2011 has helped me grow as an aspiring
future scientist. This research program is an essential part of my career as a biology student. This
learning experience challenged my laboratory potential and increased my scientific experiences.
During the summer I learned great things from the classes, proposal investigation and sharing time
in the houses with my classmates.
In the classes, General Biology I and Laboratory, I developed my scientific and laboratory
skills and learned how to work in groups. This is really important because in the health and
scientific area it is essential to work among others, and learn from each other. In Biology I course
we learned a lot of important terms and themes that we experimented later on the Laboratory. The
professors were really helpful and inspired me to keep learning and to keep trying to accomplish all
the goals I have set.
My favorite part of the summer was the proposal. While working on it I really felt like a
young scientist ready to share knowledge with everyone. This was my first one doing research,
although I think I did pretty well and I’m sure I learned so much from it. Speaking in front of an
audience was nerve wracking but at the same time really interesting. In this experience I learned
how to be more confident about myself.
During the summer we stayed at the University Campus. We shared houses with our
classmates that later on became our friends. Living with our classmates helped me at study time,
because that way we were able to share and study together so we could improve our grades.
With everything learned during this summer I had developed my scientific and
communication skills by working hand to hand with professors and classmates. I am a student that
2. has commitment, ethic and a great spirit of collaboration. As a perseverant woman, I know I will
accomplish all my goals with training and new RISE experiences I will encounter during my
upcoming university years.
