PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
SPRINT NEXTEL (Overland Park, Kansas) 1994 - 2009
IT Strategist (2005 – 2009) [HR title: Account Manager III]
Developed and communicated IT strategies, objectives and initiatives; ∼ Aligned IT strategies to business strategies; ∼ Built
comprehensive business and technology roadmaps; ∼ Managed the official IT project investment portfolio; ∼ Contributed to
the budget process; ∼ Provided business consulting services for key projects; ∼ Supported special requests from the IT
executive team; ∼ Mentored other architects.
• Saved over $400M in IT spending through merger synergies by coordinating the evaluation of every IT system in the joint
portfolio and establishing a consensus disposition to keep, consolidate, replace or retire each one.
• Aided executives in trimming an additional $1B in technology spending in response to business and economic challenges.
Provided full project investment portfolio views allowing leaders to rationally evaluate and deselect work.
• Accelerated key merger integration planning by defining business categories for grouping related IT assets during the pre-
merger process. Diplomatically partnered with key influencers to establish this foundational framework.
• Added investment clarity and reconciled conflicting technology planning processes by defining a comprehensive Business
Capability Roadmapping method. Coordinated the contributions of many senior experts in creating this consensus
approach for bridging business needs to technology investment plans.
• Significantly influenced a two-year $150M infrastructure investment program by creating a comprehensive IT Evolution Plan
outlining the current, future and target states for systems in each major area of the business. Organized the work of dozens
of architects and business experts to develop the specific plans that guided spending.
• Improved IT relevance to key business partners by carefully mapping and aligning IT strategies to business strategies,
revealing linkages and gaps.
• Served on several select teams formed to address key issues: mergers and acquisitions, long-range product line strategy,
outsourcing due diligence, technology investment governance, operating model change, and enterprise process redesign.

2. Enterprise Architect (2000 – 2004) [HR title: Technical Architect V]
Constructed business and technology roadmaps; ∼ Designed enterprise-wide processes for planning, building and maintaining
IT systems; ∼ Managed and rationalized the official application portfolio; ∼ Defined and deployed a standard software
development lifecycle method and toolset; ∼ Supported key business units in clearly defining their IT needs; ∼ Participated in
technology assessments and selection; ∼ Acted as lead IT architecture liaison to the Network organization.
• Helped reduce IT costs by over $500M through the successful consolidation of three divisional IT organizations under a
single rational structure of around 10,000 people, combining duplicate functions and introducing common processes and
tools.
• Reduced a critical architecture resource shortage that was delaying many projects for months by introducing a company-
wide approach for managing ideas and a platform for early capture and assessment of ideas at low very cost. This allowed
key business customers to better focus portfolio spending, reduce labor wasted on abandoned projects, and increased
throughput.
• Significantly improved the software development effectiveness and maturity as part of a team that created a new software
development lifecycle method and tool set. Helped win its adoption across the entire enterprise for all major IT development,
including its use on a major program that implemented a massive one-million-hour effort in a single deployment.
Network Service Assurance Architect (1994 – 2000) [HR title: Technical Specialist II]
Managed a team of systems architects and designers; ~ Provided architecture & design leadership for customer network
management products and internal network management tools; ∼ Improved departmental development process maturity and
helping the organization adopt new development models; ∼ Worked with key technology vendors to influence their strategic
product roadmaps for mutual benefit; ∼ Mentored younger developers and provided design consulting services to various
internal development teams.
• Successfully guided the standardization of network service assurance tools—specifying target tools, introducing new tools
and replacing older ones in a cost effective manner. Scope included network fault, performance and testing capabilities
across multiple networks, technologies and organizations.
• Founded an internal object oriented technology user community that grew to more than 500 technologists. Served as the
organization’s first president, hosting semi-annual conferences in three cities.
AMERICAN AIRLINES (Fort Worth, Texas) 1988 - 1994
Senior Programmer Analyst – Schedule & Route Planning
Designed and built specialized decision support tools for determining which cities to serve and optimizing the level of service; ∼
Gathered business and functional requirements; ∼ Led a team researching advanced technologies that could enhance decision
support capabilities (including object oriented technology, semantic databases, massively parallel computing, and advanced
visualization tools).
• Radically transformed strategic route planning and significantly contributed to long term corporate profitability by developing
a strategic business simulation platform that enabled competitive analysis. The platform became a standard tool used for all
business expansion and repositioning decisions, including a successful $350M South American route acquisition.
• Accelerated critical business simulations as much as 300% by introducing parallel computing technology and techniques.
