A POSSIBLE SERVICE DEFINITION

“The situation in which a provider furnishes a customer with
something to meet that customer’s needs or wants. The customer
may, in fact, be anybody and he may or may not be deliberately
requesting or purchasing the service. The service itself may involve
the provision of one or more physical products or be intangible (or
indeed a combination of both). Such services are normally a
function of human contact (direct or sometimes mediated ...[and
occasionally replaced]... by technology). This service is delivered
and received at the same point in time (and often place), and,
courtesy of the human interaction involved, it is infinitely variable:
it is ‘experienced’ by the recipient via the senses at the time of
consumption and evaluated by him at that point or later against
expectation. Accordingly, services cannot be inventoried, owned,
repaired or replaced – they (or the opportunity to deliver them) are
thus mostly time-sensitive and perishable”. T Jolley (2008).

A possible definition of a product



A product is something: anything, in fact, that has been the output of some
process of physical (manual and/or machine) or intangible transformation
ordained by a ‘producer’. Production processes are usually designed to result in
a value-added output which is being demanded by (or can be sold to) a market at
a price. Products may also be held to incorporate elements of service. Products
can usually be stored/inventoried, adjusted, distributed, repaired and replaced
and used, re-used and even re-sold where, when and how and to whom the
purchaser wishes where the ‘good’ is physical and purchase results in
ownership. (Origin: Latin pro-ducere , to lead forward.) T. Jolley (2008)

A POSSIBLE SERVICE DEFINITION ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- “The situation in which a provider furnishes a customer with something to meet that customer’s needs or wants. The customer may, in fact, be anybody and he may or may not be deliberately requesting or purchasing the service. The service itself may involve the provision of one or more physical products or be intangible (or indeed a combination of both). Such services are normally a function of human contact (direct or sometimes mediated ...[and occasionally replaced]... by technology). This service is delivered and received at the same point in time (and often place), and, courtesy of the human interaction involved, it is infinitely variable: it is ‘experienced’ by the recipient via the senses at the time of consumption and evaluated by him at that point or later against expectation. A possible definition of a product A product is something: anything, in fact, that has been the output of some process of physical (manual and/or machine) or intangible transformation ordained by a ‘producer’. Production processes are usually designed to result in a value-added output which is being demanded by (or can be sold to) a market at a price. Products may also be held to incorporate elements of service. Products can usually be stored/inventoried, adjusted, distributed, repaired and replaced and used, re-used and even re-sold where, when and how and to whom the purchaser wishes where the ‘good’ is physical and purchase results in ownership. What is a travel agency / a flight? Q. So, we now have definitions for Tourism, Product and Service..... so what is Tourism....? Product? Service? Combination? Something else, maybe?
