Theme Of Metadrama In A Midsummer Night Dream
Shakespeare Question 1 – Metadrama in A Midsummer Night Dream. Metadrama refers to a play
featured in the plot of another play. Shakespeare presents metadrama in A Midsummer Night Dream
in several ways. There is evidence of metadrama in the soliloquy by Helena at the end of the Act 1.
In this instance, Helena talks about her emotions and feelings. She goes on to act out her emotions
stating that it is not possible to grasp love by the eyes. She says that love can only be captured via
perception. The soliloquy sets up the ground work for other such instances in the acts that follow. It
is important to observe the relationship between 'eye' and 'I' in Helena's soliloquy as a rhyme.
"Through Athens I am thought as fair as she. But what of that? Demetrius thinks not so. He will not
know what all but he do know. And as he errs, doting on Hermia's eyes. So I, admiring of his
qualities." (Act 1, scene 1) Helena follows Demetrius into the forest as she sings with love and
kindness. While this does not qualify as soliloquy, it falls under metadrama as the playwright wishes
to share Helena's message with the audience. Her actions are self–contradictory if one refers to her
previous soliloquy. She is unable to fathom or accept that Demetrius does not love her. This should
be contrasted to her earlier claims that it is not possible to grasp love by the eyes. Shakespeare
develops the paradox as an important exemplification of metadrama in A Midsummer Night Dream.
Helena's character is a product of her era such that contradiction is a rarity. Discrepancy between
actions and words was seen as egoism and was only accepted in fiction as opposed to the society.
Like Shakespeare, many playwrights from the era did not shy away from including such
metadramatic devices in their plays. Helena has the social traits of her time making it difficult for
the audience to accept her actions toward Demetrius as anything other than dramatic acts. For a
Renaissance woman, the audience would expect her to portray a higher level of realism. "Then to
the wood will he to–morrow night. Pursue her; and for this intelligence. If I have thanks, it is a dear
expense. But herein mean I to enrich my pain." (Act 1, scene 1) As hinted above, the first

A Midsummer Night 's Dream By William Shakespeare
A Midsummer Night's Dream is a comedy written by the notorious playwright Shakespeare. This
story is filled with illusion and misconception, leaving the characters in a daze. Pertinent to the title
of the play is this illusion in which everyone determines to be a dream. In addition to the origin of
the dream is the midsummer night when it occurs. Though the story begins and concludes in
Theseus's castle in Athens, it mainly takes place in the woods at night. Hitherto, the story ensues on
a midsummer night where the characters are met with a peculiar situation. Though everyone holds a
different reason as to why they end up in the woods, their stories become intertwined. The play
revolves around deception, but one that provides laughter ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

This juice is applied to be applied to her eyelids when she is sleeping, and the moment she awakes
she will fall in love with the first creature she sees. At the same time that this is occurring, their is
another subplot that has to do with two young women and two young men. Hermia and Lysander are
in love, yet Demetrius is in love with Hermia. On the outside of this love triangle is Helena, who is
in love with Demetrius. The flower comes into effect again when Oberon tells Goodfellow to put the
juice of the flower onto Demetrius' eyes to make him love Helena. This leads to a misunderstanding
where Lysander is given the juice and falls in love with Helena, "Not Hermia but Helena I love"
(II.II. line 120). Then Demetrius is touched by the juice and falls in love with Helena, reversing the
love triangle. Furthermore, these subplots tie into the main plot that pertains to the union of Theseus
and Hippolyta. In the first scene of Act I, Theseus says, "Now, fair Hippolyta, our nuptial hour
draws on apace" (I.I. line 1–2), further marking the main plot that holds all others. There are six
major characters present in this play, with the rest of them being supporting roles. Fairy King
Oberon is the protagonist of the story, manipulating each character in order to get what he wants.
His main goal is to obtain Titania's Indian boy, "I do but beg a little changeling boy, To be my
henchman"

A Midsummer Nights Dream Essay
In the comedic romantic play, A Midsummer Night's Dream, by William Shakespeare, four
plebeians are fighting for fate and destiny in the city of Athens, Greece. Hermia, a strong willed
young lady, defies her father's orders to marry Demetrius, another Athenian man, and subsequently
runs off to the woods to marry Lysander. However, when the lovers, Hermia and Lysander, run off,
their plans are disrupted when they are told on by Helena, Demetrius's obsessive lover. At this
moment, Lysander, after learning about the others disrupting their plans to elope, says "the course of
true love never did run smooth" (28) Later, when the love potion is placed onto the lovers by Puck,
the well known trickster, and the other fairies such as Oberon ... Show more content on

Lots of feelings between Hermia, Lysander, Helena and Demetrius are not mutual and are only a
series of unconnected lines from one person to another to another. This truly demonstrates the
hardships and complications of true love and how it does not always go as perfect as planned. Many
problems arise because of the mixups between the love juice and the fairies. One such mixup is
when Hermia and Lysander's plans to elope are very suddenly halted when Helena hears of their
plans and tells Demetrius, who decides to see if Helena's rumors are true. Demetrius then goes into
the woods, followed by Helena, to see if it is true, but does not find the lovers, but instead are seen
by Oberon. Oberon, while having love issues of his own with Titania, sees Helena and her obsessive
love for Demetrius, and so makes a plan to help Helena with her love issues. When Oberon, of
which is busy with other tasks, tells Puck to put the supernatural love juice on the eyes of an
Athenian man (Demetrius) so that he will fall in love with Helena, he gladly takes the task. Though
since Oberon is not specific with his directions for the love potion, Puck accidentally puts it on
Lysander while he is sleeping. Consequently, when Lysander awakens he automatically falls in love
with Helena. "Lysander's love, that would not let him bide; Fair Helena, who more engilds the night

The Different Forms of Love in Relation to 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' Love is a term used daily
in one's life. Many categorize love in many forms. These forms differ from one–another such as the
difference between love for food and love for one's spouse. However, in the play; "A Midsummer
Night's Dream", love takes different forms than the ones experienced in reality. One can classify the
different types of love used in this play into three different categories; true love, love produced by
cupid's flower, and the state of lust. 'True love' is a form of love that has a distinct aura around it and
serves as the baseline in the play. One can suggest that the love shared between Hermia and
Lysander is 'true love' as they decided to elope ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We the globe can compass soon,
Swifter than the wand'ring moon. (4.1.99–103)
The above shows that Titania and Oberon share a relationship that is inseparable. They swallow
their pride and come back together, planning to even bless the marriage of Theseus and Hippolyta
even though those were the other two in the affairs. Hippolyta proceeds to call Oberon 'my Lord' and
Oberon calls Hippolyta 'my Queen'. This shows that their love is still prevalent. 'True love' is the
baseline in the play and is the primary form of love. The love produced by Cupid's flower serves as
comedic relief in the play and can be considered to be the second form of love. The love produced
by the love juice causes one to fall in love with the first living creature they see and do not seem to
occupy themselves with anything that does not involve their lover. Titania enamores over Bottom
once she wakes up:
I pray thee, gentle mortal, sing again.
Mine ear is much enamored of thy note,
So is mine eye enthralled to thy shape,
And thy fair virtue's force perforce doth move me
On the first view to say, to swear, I love thee. (3.1.139–143)
The above shows the second form of love which is the love produced from the juice of cupid's
flower. It is keen to note that one who is enthralled with cupid's love does not involve themselves in
any other activity that is not flattering their lover. This is emphasised when Titania orders the fairies

A Midsummer Nights Dream: Fairies and Their Purpose
Fairies and Their Purpose
The fairies and the fairy realm have many responsibilities in this play. The most important of which
is that they are the cause of much of the conflict and comedy within this story. They represent
mischievousness and pleasantry which gives the play most of its emotion and feeling. They relate to
humans because they make mistakes but differ in the fact that they do not understand the human
world. Robin is the most notable fairy in the play and is the servant of the fairy king, Oberon. Along
with Oberon, Robin is the most comedic and protagonistic character in this play. He is responsible
for the essential events that occur in the woods whether on purpose or just on accident. He
recognizes himself as a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Humans are known for making mistakes all the time and the fact that Robin mistakes Lysander for
Demetrius shows that he too suffers from error and is not infallible. "Weeds of Athens he doth wear.
This is he my master said Despised the Athenian maid." This mistake allows for the actions and
conflicts that take place between the lovers to finally come through and surface to the audience. The
human actors provide entertainment for the duke and elite of Athens as the fairies provide
entertainment for the audience and the lovers in the forest. The servants of Oberon and Titania
reflect the servants of Theseus and the performers of the play in the fact that both groups of servants
are controlled by a higher power. "That thou shalt like an airy spirit go. Peaseblossom, Cobweb,
Mote, and Mustardseed!" Both fairies and humans fall in love with another as shown between
Titania and Oberon and Lysander and Hermia. The fairies also differ from the members from the
human world in many ways. The most notable is that the fairies can turn into little pixie–like
creatures and fly away, a feat never accomplished by a human as of yet. The humans have a better
understanding of technology and inventions such as the phonograph. "Lord, what fools these mortals
be!" The fairies were using phonograph as a table for fruit and were frightened when Bottom
showed them that it played music. The most obvious difference is the representation of the fairies as
a delicate and

A Midsummer NIght's Dream A " Midsummer Night's Dream" is a classical play written by William
Shakespeare. It is one of his more eccentric piece of work. The play is about the struggle of love
between four essential characters: Hermia, Lysander, Demetrius , and Helena. However, it is not
quite that simple. The play is quite confusing. In "Midsummer Night's dream" the play take place in
two realms fairy realm and human realm, two of the three main settings. Another one of the settings
take place inside the cottage of a carpenter Peter Quince. At one point during the play the realms
converge Making it difficult for the audience to distinguish the difference between reality and
illusion within the play. This is one of the many reasons the play is interesting or appealing. Also to
add on, the symbolism of the tile and moon, and comedic elements within the play serves engage
and intrigue. The beginning of the play begins in Athen during the light of day, reality. It is here we
are introduced to the first six of essential characters: Theseus, Hippolyta, Egeus, Hermia, Lysander,
Demetrius, and Helena. Here we learn that Theseus and Hippolyta are getting, however, they are not
happy as one might think. Now, Egeus, the father of Hermia insists she marries Demetrius, one of
her two suitors. However, Hermia does not want to marry Demetrius, she loves Lysander. On the
other hand, Helena loves Demetrius, he does not feel the same way. Essential their issue is

For many centuries women have been oppressed, and treated like second–class citizens. Over the
years, women have earned more rights and have been recognized as equals to men. Although they
have earned many things, there are still some signs of them being oppressed by societies that are still

different. She was a big supporter of William Shakespeare and his acting company. William

taken away from her old way of living and is now dreading the day when Theseus and her are

Hippolyta was pulled from her life as Queen of the Amazons, one that she probably ruled and had

William Shakespeare 's The Midsummer Night Dream
Our group focused on a chapter from Shakespeare's Festive Comedy, "May Games and
Metamorphoses on a Midsummer Night" by Barber, C.L. From this section of the book, it gave me a
new insight regarding to Shakespeare's play The Midsummer 's Night Dream. Barber did a great job
in his explanation on the romance part of the play and also on the metamorphoses part, however he
was unorganized and the methods he used to explain his ideas were confusing. In the scene, where
Lysander and Hermia plans to escape, Barber refers to Romeo and Juliet. At that point of the play,
they are star–cross lovers and their love is being frowned upon Also, Lysander refers to their love as
a struck of lighten meaning it was love at first sight, which also happened in Romeo and Juliet.
When people fall in love at first sight it shows that love itself is blind. Their relationship is out of the
ordinary because during the Renaissance it is the parents or authorities that took control over
marriage. Those that reject that rule usually ends in a tragedy. Another scene that Barber amplifies
love is blind, was the scene between Demetrius and Helena. Demetrius, who just fell out of love
with Helena, was blindly in love with Hermia who despises him. Helena whom would give the
world to be with Demetrius is also blind by love because no matter how hard Demetrius pushes her
away, she still clingy to him. If love was not in fact blind then even the love potion would have not
blinded Lysander from loving Hermia

Analysis Of ' A Midsummer Night 's Dream '
The supernatural world is rather distinct to that of the human world entrenched in societal standards
and boundaries. Shakespeare's play, 'A Midsummer Night's Dream', explores this concept,
particularly through the use of Puck. In agreement to Harold Bloom's statement, the following essay
will analyse how Puck is significant because, by being so disparate, he is able to show the
limitations of the human. This will be done through, first, exploring a definition of the human in
relation to the supernatural. Subsequently, the essay will use a Freudian lense to analyse the morality
of Puck and, lastly, the essay will focus on Puck's physical characteristics as well as his ability to
span across boundaries in the play and the metatheatrical realm. Harold Bloom insists that "Puck,
quicksilver and uncaring, defines the limits of the human by being so far apart from the human".
This correlates with defining the human as a being that is distinguishable in characteristics to that of
a god, divine spirit or supernatural entity (OED Online). Thus, by using such a definition one can
explore how Bloom's statement is valid. The first way in which Puck differs from the human and,
thus, defines their limitations is through the immoral and "uncaring" mind he has (Bloom 5). This
can be explored through Freudian terminology. According to Freud, humans can only access the
conscious mind and its superego which involves everyday functions and societal expectations
(Siegfried 2). They cannot access

Endless Love
Faults exist when love and law attempt to coincide. In A Midsummer Night's Dream, Hermia comes
head to head with unfairness, the fault which arises after her father disapproves of her marrying who
she loves. According to the Athenian Law she must serve a punishment for disobeying her father. By
this law, she should treat him like a god or her ruler. What he says goes and he intends for her to
marry Demetrius, but she loves Lysander. In the play, if she does not marry who her father has
chosen for her, several punishments may occur. Hermia has a few options she must quickly choose
by the wedding of Theseus and Hyppolyta. Ultimately, law should not factor into a person's ... Show

Although the Athenian law states that death should occur, Theseus takes it upon himself to give her
an alternative punishment. "...question your desires, know your youth, examine well your blood,
whether if you yield not your father's choice you can endure the livery of a nun, for aye to be in
shady cloister mewed, to live a barren sister all your life..." (Skakespeare4). Theseus gave her the
option to move away, so she would not have to die. This decision will also keep Egeus from having
to kill his daughter. Although this alternative is not the best thing, it makes for a better punishment
than dying.
Theseus gives her the safest and smartest choice, marrying Demetrius and obeying her father. It
would be the safest due to the fact her father has no problem getting rid of her. "As she is mine, I
may dispose of her, which shall be either to this gentlemen or to her death according to our law
immediately provided in that case" (Shakespeare3). Choosing this option would cause a lot less
problems and make things easier for everyone, but Hermia loves Lysander too much, so she takes
the harder road out and decides to run off with Lysander and get married, putting a big risk on many
things in her life. "She is even prepared to give up her family and way of life to marry Lysander,
agreeing to elope with him into the forest" (Hermia). The love she shares with Lysander seems much

Analysis of A Midsummer Night´s Dream
William Shakespeare starts with a seemingly unresolvable conflict in A Midsummer Night's Dream.
The main characters are lovers who are either unrequited in their love or hassled by the love of
another. These lovers are inevitably paired. How does Shakespeare make this happen? He creates
many subplots that, before long, are all snarled up into a chaotic knot. So, what actions does
Shakespeare take to resolve these new quandaries? He ends up trusting a single key entity with his
comedy. It's only then that he introduces a special character into his world: a mischievous fairy
whom is known by the name of Puck. Puck is the catalyst for all these subplots and, indeed, for the
entirety of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. Try to take Puck ... Show more content on

And, indeed, it does. This is how he comes to hold Oberon's trust during the play; his love and
obedience for his king lead Oberon to choose Puck as his deputy in his plot against Titania. His
loyalty are also intricately tied in with his playful nature. He tries not to do anything that would
anger or disappoint his king. However, even his kind nature is tested by human antics. Puck does not
have a very high opinion of the mortal lovers or of the arrogant Bottom. His famous quote "What
fools these mortals be" (III.ii.115) indicates his feelings about the lovers. If Puck were less loving of
his King, and more in favor of his own amusement, he very well might leave the lovers as they are
in the middle of the play if only for the entertainment value. Puck tells Oberon "And so far am I glad
it so did sort, as this their jangling I esteem a sport" (III.ii.352–353). It is likely that he would think
the mixed up lovers to be grand entertainment and leave them the way they are for his enjoyment. If
Puck were meaner, then he might change Bottom completely into an ass and leave him that way.
Instead, he is kind and removes the ass's head. His gentle nature is exhibited in the last lines of the
play as well: "Gentles, do not reprehend. If you pardon, we will mend"(V.i.424–425). He asks them
to not be offended by the play. If it is too much, he urges the audience to think of

Midsummer Night Dream Analysis
A Midsummer's Night Dream
William Shakespeare is a successful playwright as he uses the style of history, tragedy and comedy
which is an entertaining aspect that is in all his plays.
One of his plays, 'A midsummer's night dream', includes the themes of love and magic, where love is
represented as a force that makes people act in irrational ways to entertain the audience in a comical
and dramatic way. He used different techniques throughout the play to create a tumultuous and
intriguing factor. The storyline of the play follows various couples such as Hermia and Lysander and
Oberon and Titania. These couples show examples of irrational behaviours with love and magic
throughout the play.
Hermia and Lysander behave irrationally throughout the whole play because they're head over heels
for each other; however, their love is oppressed by both her father Egeus and the strict Athenian law.
In Act 1, Scene 1 when Egeus is at court with Hermia he uses a demanding and dominating tone to
state, 'as she is mine i may dispose of her' This causes them to act spontaneously and irrationally and
as a consequence, they run away from Athens to get married. This entertains the audience by adding
more conflict and complication to the story. After they elope to the forest, magic becomes the force
that turns love to a dramatic and conflict filled experience that is also entertaining. Lysander acts in
irrational ways when he is put under the spell of 'Love in Idleness' where he states how madly he
loves on Helena, and how much he hates Hermia. 'Hang off, thou cat, thou burr! Vile thing, let
loose, / or I will shake thee from me like a serpent.' Derogatory language and repetition is used to
emphasise his hate toward Hermia and orders her to leave him alone. For example, in Act 3, Scene
2, Lysander has fallen in love with Helena and tells Hermia how he hates her. 'Out, loathed
medicine! O hated potion, hence!' Conflict between characters create comedy in the play which
entertains the audience because of the dramatic irony. Lysander's insults in the statement are
repetition as it is the same meaning but in different words. This language technique emphasises that
Lysander wants Hermia to leave him alone.
Oberon and Titania are the

A Midsummer Night 's Dream Essay
In A Midsummer Night's Dream, one of the most poignant similes occurs when Theseus advises
Hermia that she should yield to her father's wishes because she is his creation, a figure in wax, and
he has the power to command her, mold her, or destroy her at will (MND I.I.49–51). In Athenian
society, a woman is expected to yield control of her life to men and to allow them to mold her
affections to their will. The simile of a woman as a wax figure suggest that the only resolution to
conflict is for the woman to yield and mold to meet the man's expectations. The play overall,
however, suggests that the better resolution to conflict, and the better path to a happy ending, comes
in the form of a man conforming to the wishes of the woman, like a moldable wax figure. To
demonstrate this, in the wood, when Oberon is guided by his own sense of justice, he seeks to mold
the will of the men to that of the women. In contrast, when motivated by his own self–interest, his
treatment of Titania closely resembles the attitude of Athens. Moreover, the resolution to the main
conflict of the play, namely Hermia's refusal to marry Demetrius, comes in the form of Demetrius'
mind being changed by Oberon's magic. These events provide evidence against the view that
women, not men, are supposed to be malleable. In summary, this simile establishes an expectation
of women's behavior that is later both echoed and challenged throughout the play, which has
significant effects on the outcome of the plot and

A Midsummer Night 's Dream By William Shakespeare
Meeting your truelove sounds like a fantasy, right? It doesn't seem possible or even attainable in the
least this day in time, but Shakespeare's work has still given us that hope that someday we will be
loved the way that we love others themselves. In "A Midsummer Night's Dream," it seems as if
there is an endearing ending, but so much lies between Act 1 and Act 5 to have it end the way it
does. In this play, there is a complicated romance and friendship between four couples that also
illustrates sexual desires and a woman's submission to a man. To further illustrate, we must first start
with Act 1, Scene 1 for the first two "lovers" that are introduced. Theseus, the duke of Athens, has

Hermia has a choice to make after Egeus speaking with Theseus about whom she will marry if
marry at all. Theseus says to Hermia, "To fit your fancies to your father's will, / Or else the law of
Athens yields you up / (Which by no means we may extenuate) / To death, or to a vow of single life
(1.1.118–121)." She has the choice to either marry Demetrius, become a nun, or even die if she
chooses neither. Being young and in love, her and Lysander choose to run away and elope, meeting
later in the forest that night. It would have worked out for the couple except for one remaining factor
that brought further complications to their love. Hermia's best friend, Helena, meets Hermia before
Hermia runs away to the forest to meet Lysander. Helena is in love with Demetrius, but he no longer

Analysis Of ' A Midsummer Night 's Dream '
Gabriel Yeung Mr. Ross ENG1DE–A January 17th 2014 Humor. Humor is a quality of an action that
causes amusement and entertainment. A Midsummer Night's Dream, written by William
Shakespeare is a play best known in the Shakespearian world for being a comedy play. This play has
entertained countless audiences over a span of many centuries. A Midsummer Night's Dream is
about two pairs of lovers that escape to the forest in order to make love for one another. While doing
so, fairies in the forest create chaos which causes the lover to be confused in who they truly love.
The misinterpretation on their identity relates to the major theme of the play which is love versus
lust and reality versus illusions. The language the Shakespeare chose to use in the play to create an
interesting plotline creates humor as well as entertaining the audience. Among the language use, the
literary devices that are most prominent to make the play humorous are dramatic irony, enjambment,
and imagery. These devices not only entertain and create humor for the audience but also help
develop a plotline in which many are interested in. Dramatic irony is one of the most evident
devices used in the play. The term 'dramatic irony' is defined as an idea/ plot that the reader or
audience knows off in a story or play but the character in the play do not. In A Midsummer Night's
Dream, the existence of fairies is a major dramatic irony. The fairies are the mystical creatures that

Theme Of The Moon In A Midsummer Night Dream
The sun is a constant in our lives. We wake up to it faithfully rising on the horizon. We enjoy its
unceasing warmth and energy throughout the day before falling asleep after it sets. With night
passing quickly, we take no notice of the moon that resides in place of the sun. However, it is this
unnoticed moon that more accurately mirrors our perception of time and the phases in our lives.
William Shakespeare realized this about the moon. In his play, A Midsummer's Night Dream, he
uses the motif of the moon to symbolize both time and the phases in our lives just as he does
through the characters of the play.
Shakespeare conveys the passage of time through the character of Theseus early on in the play.
Theseus, referencing the moon, expresses his distaste for how slow time is passing by saying in line
2: "Another moon: but, O, methinks, how slow this old moon wanes! she lingers my desires, like to
a step–dame or a dowager long withering out a young man revenue" (AMND 1.1.3–6.) Theseus is
dissatisfied because he wants to be with his fiance, Hippolyta, now rather than waiting for the moon
to wane. However, Hippolyta reassuringly replies to Theseus in line 8, "that Four days will quickly
steep themselves in night; Four nights will quickly dream away the time; And then the moon, like to
a silver bow new–bent in heaven, shall behold the night of our solemnities" (1.1.7–11). Hippolyta,
also referring to the moon, is telling Theseus that soon enough the time will be here for them to be
together. Another example of the moon representing time can be seen when Theseus is speaking to
Hermia about who she will marry and how she will obey her father's commands. "Take time to
pause; and, by the nest new moon– The sealing–day betwixt my love and me," (1.1.85–87). Here
again, Shakespeare uses the motif of the moon to represent time and effectively shows how his
characters live their lives around it.
Shakespeare also uses the idea of moon phases to symbolize both the difficulties and the good
fortunes in one's life. For example, Shakespeare relates the darkness of the moon to the "difficult"
life of a nun and the "difficult" decision that Hermia must make. In Lines 70–78, Theseus declares
to Hermia, "Whether, if

A Midsummer Night 's Dream Essay
Within A Midsummer Night's Dream there are many different similes and metaphors that are
themselves within another simile or metaphor. What stuck out to me was the meaning of that, the
multi–layered symbolism. From the title of the play to the ending speech, the possibility of this
being a dream is clearly stated. Inside of that the woods are a dreamlike state that are outside of
Athens in what could be called a purgatory between the reality of Athens and the fiction of the play
within the play. Through the changes in setting, Helena's idea of love being able to take different
forms is constantly recycled. The various viewpoints of love within the play are all individually
described in the differing settings, which culminates in an outside perspective that is hindsight. To
be able to look back and see that the various metaphors of love are unable to stand alone and must
be combined in order to see love objectively.
The play begins in Athens in which the constraints on love are rigid and conservative. The social
pressures of the hierarchal structure of Athens are what place the bounds on love. The potential of
humanity is a frightening concept to authoritative figures of government control. In the play Hermia
is pleading to the Duke for a way out of her arranged marriage and he gives her options of becoming
a nun or getting killed if she refuses to do as her father wishes. There is nothing in the gray area as
far as what is expected, there are literal laws against the

A Midsummer Night 's Dream By William Shakespeare
What types of dream really impress you in your life? Would that be funny dreams, weird dreams,
scary dreams, risque dreams, dramatic dreams, life–changing dreams, and even lucid dream stories.
As a matter of fact, people's dreams can be a kind of illusion because dreams skew their daily life
into confusion–people cannot recognize reality and unreality easily. Similarly, love not only is
imaginative, but also can make people get confused just like dream. The comedic, fantastic and
romantic play A Midsummer Night's Dream written by William Shakespeare, includes five acts and
nine scenes. Basically, the story talks about several main characters–Hermia, Helena, Lysander and

Lysander gets married to Hermia. Also, Demetrius gets married with Helena. In the play
Midsummer Night's Dream by Shakespeare, although each scene is presented to show the love, the
most significant plot of the play is Act 3(scene 2) because it mainly involves several main
characters–Puck, Hermia and Helena, some actions and the setting in order to illustrate that love is
the fantasy of dream. To begin with, in Midsummer Night's Dream's, Act 3(scene 2) is the most
significant plot because it involves a character such as Hermia who indicates that people pursue love
with any cost. The whole story begins with Hermia because her father Egeus wants her to marry to a
man–Demetrius whom she does not love. In Act 1(scene 1), Hermia asks Theseus the worst thing
that could happen if she rejects to marry Demetrius. Theseus responds that "Either to die the death,
or to abjure/ For ever the society of men." Then, Hermia said that "Ere I will yield my virgin patent
up/ Unto his lordship, whose unwished yoke/ My soul consents not to give sovereignty." Hermia
declines to marry other men except Lysander. As a consequence, Hermia decides to run away with
Lysander in order to get rid of the Athenian law. Then, Helena and Demetrius follow them to the
forest because they want to stop the escape. Moreover, Hermia would sacrifice any cost to achieve
her accomplishment because she is eager to obtain her true love. In this case, Shakespeare wants to

What Is Hermia's Relationship In A Midsummers Night Dream
In A Midsummers Night Dream a group of craftsmen put on a play for the Dukes wedding. A play
about Pyramus and Thisbe. Little did the craftsmen know, that they are about to perfom Hermia and
Lysander's entire struggle. The play gives this drama a comical side, and give symbols and allusions
to Hermia and Lysanders relationship. The play of Pyramus and Thisbe is about two lovers whose
families do not approve their love. "Be it so she; will not here before your grace consent to marry
with Demetrius, I beg the ancient privilege of Athens, As she is mine, I may dispose of her." Egeus,
Hermia's father, wants Hermia to marry Demetrius instead of Hermia's lover, Lysander.
Automatically we see a resemblance. "Wilt thou at Ninny's tomb meet me straightway?" Pyramus
and Thisbe decide to run off to Ninnus' tomb to be together in secret, just like Hermia and Lysander
run off to the wood beyond Athens. "Steal forth thy father's house to–morrow night; and in the
wood, a league without the town, where I did meet thee once with Helena to do observance to a
morn of May. There will I stay for thee." ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The moon in Pyramus and Thisbe is also shining as Thisbe comes across a lion and runs off leaving
behind a bloody article of clothing; leaving Pyramus to believe that his love is dead. This part of the
play is almost like the moment that Lysander was casted under a spell and falls in love with Helena.
Hermia had woken up and cried, "Help me, Lysander, help me! do thy best to pluck this crawling
serpent from my breast! Ay me, for pity! What a dream was here! Lysander, look how I do quake
with fear." Hermia awakes from a nightmare to realize her lover is gone, and think he could possibly

Scene Analysis in "A Midsummer Nights Dream"
'Midsummer Nights Dream' is one of Shakespeare's most famous and successful plays. The play was
part of Shakespeare's early work. It was written and performed around 1595. 'A Midsummer Nights
Dream' is a romantic comedy play; and that's what I will be focusing on how Shakespeare creates
humour in act 5 scene 1. So how does he create humour?
There are many ways as to how Shakespeare creates humour; one of the main reasons is through the
characters. There are there sets of characters the fairies, court and the mechanicals in this case it's
the mechanicals. The mechanicals are normal workers that want to become actors. They are
uneducated, you can tell this because Bottom (mechanical) says in act 4 scene 2 line 20 "Where are
these lads?" ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Theseus comments on the childish actors by saying "His speech was like a tangled chain, nothing
impaired, but all disordered." Act 5 scene, lines 123–124. This shows that because of Quince's lack
of education he cannot send the right information he wants to send to the audience. Due to the
bumpy start of the play the court had already created a comical atmosphere. All of this entertainment
and amuses the audience (both in the play and watching the play). The themes of this play are
mostly to do with love and magic however the play as a whole is a comedy. The magic scene is the
scene that brings the whole play together. Without it the lovers would not be called lovers and there
wouldn't be a marriage. Before Puck put the love potion on them Lysander was in love with Hermia
but her dad wanted her to marry Demetrius; and Helena was in love with Demetrius and Demetrius
was in love with Hermia. Puck sorted things out by putting a love potion on Demetrius so that he
falls in love with Helena. The funny part about it all is when they are all confused when they awake
from what they think is a dream which is a dramatic irony because we know it wasn't a dream but in
fact a reality. One of the ways Shakespeare creates humour in the mechanicals performance is with
the usage of props. Through Shakespeare's intelligent writing skills he sends a strong message that
there is a man playing a wall. This is funny because Snout(playing the wall) actually has a speech

A Midsummer Night 's Dream By William Shakespeare
Written during the Elizabethan era where gender roles played an important part in society and
relationships, A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare portrays the interaction
between both sexes, and the women's response to the expectation of such norms. Although the
characters: Hippolyta, Hermia, Helena, and Titania, are portrayed as objects (both sexual and
material) contingent upon their male lovers, they are also given empowerment. During the
Elizabethan Era, and present throughout MND, both men and women were expected to act
according to the roles set upon them by their society. Men were dominant and superior in society,
politics and intellect (Master's). They often held high positions of authority in both domestic and

He is referring to the war against her people, the Amazons, and taking her as a trophy in honor of his
victory. She is now objectified as his possession and must marry the man that slaughtered her people
without questioning or going against his wishes, for his authority in both society and law prohibit
her to do so. The domineering relationship between subjugate and submission is a governing factor
within the comedic realm of Athens. The theme of "Erotic desire and martial conquest are collapsed
into one another in the Duke 's language."(Rieger 73). However, Shakespeare gives her character sly
control over her husband when she reinforces that Theseus await their marriage celebration (even
though he has the authority to change the date of the wedding). Female objectification is not only
present in their relationships with a partner but with their parents as well. During Elizabethan Era it
was customary for a women's parents to arrange her marriage with an adequate suitor in order to
uphold the family's riches and social status. As seen in Hermia's case, her father, Ageus, promises
her to Demetrious. However, upon her refusal Egeus brings her before Theseus, duke of Athens, and
demands that she comply to his wishes or answer to Athenian law stating that "...she is mine, [and] I

Hippolyta arrive in the forest to discover the sleeping lovers and when Theseus hears of what

Dream can be described as the most "greenest" of all of Shakespeare's works as it is the play that
contains the most elements of the outside world away from the city and court life. Because the genre
of this play is a comedy, we know that everything will turn out okay. The title of this play includes
in it two elements: the first being that midsummer is a time of feasting and marrying, but also of
liminal moment, when something ends but something else begins. The second is that a dream occurs
in the play. The fantastical world of fairies and magic in the plot is directly related to the
phenomenon of love since all of the falling in and out of love occurs in a forest of fairy magic in
ancient Greece of Athens. Because of Oberon, the

Love is a timeless topic which Shakespeare explores in depth in "A Midsummer Night's Dream ".
Shakespeare utilizes the format of a play within a play to communicate the complexities of love.
Love is a force that characters cannot control. The play includes scenes of lovers searching for
fulfillment in the arms of characters who are unavailable. The magic love potion wreaks havoc
between actual lovers and it is clear just how negatively it is portrayed. The entire play revolves
around the difficulties of maintaining love and how foolish and insecure the pursuit of love can
make us. It also touches on the fickleness of love, that love can be ... Show more content on

Through Athens I am thought as fair as she. But what of that? Demetrius thinks not so" (1.1.226–
228). Demetrius's obsession for Hermia makes Helena feel ugly and unwanted. By the time the love
potion going around causes both Lysander and Demetrius to fall in love with her, Helena is so used
to the hate–filled words and full of insecurity she feels they're playing a trick on her. Before the love
potion she couldn't even compare to Hermia in Demetrius's eyes. She couldn 't bring herself to see
why they would both be in love with her when she couldn 't even get one of them to love her before.
She's spent so long comparing herself to Hermia and trying to be like her she forgets her own self
worth.
Demetrius's love is a whole other negative portrayal of love. His love can mostly be seen as
superficial. Up until meeting Hermia, Demetrius was betrothed to Helena and in love with her as
well. " Demetrius, I 'll avouch it to his head, Made love to Nedar 's daughter, Helena, And won her
soul; and she, sweet lady, dotes, Devoutly dotes, dotes in idolatry, Upon this spotted and inconstant
man. "(1.1.2) The way Shakespeare portrays Demetrius's love vs Helenas love shows the difference
in love between men and women. This may not always be the cause, and definitely goes both ways,
but in this particular play it is how it's portrayed. Helena's love for Demetrius is never ending with
her willing to do anything for him. Demetrius on the other hand only loved her until

A Midsummer Night 's Dream By William Shakespeare
Millennials of today are growing up in a technologically adept time where replication of the latest
trends is considered the key to success. Shakespeare, the playwright of A Midsummer Night's
Dream, is infamous for his angst and lament, as well as his numerous depictions of love and
romance. In his play, one of the most apparent perspectives of love is that genuine love is a force so
powerful, that it can not be imitated, replicated or enforced. One of the most profound examples of
forced love in the play is exhibited through the relationship between Hermia and Demetrius, two
Athenians who are being forced to be married by Hermia's father, Egeus. In their relationship, only
one of the parties is consenting to this arranged marriage: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

In A Midsummer's Night Dream, written in the year 1600, one of the main conflicts of the play is a
result of the unhappiness that results from a forced marriage. The surmised engagement is between
the fairest women in all of Athens, Hermia, and the handsome and affluent, Demetrius. Demetrius is
the man who gained Hermia's father's permission to marry her, but simultaneously not winning her
affections, ''Ere I will my virgin patent up Unto his lordship, whose unwished yoke My soul
consents not to give sovereignty'' (Shakespeare I.I.80–83). Because Hermia was willing to disobey
her father (a true crime considering in the year 1600, women were considered the property of men),
and refuse to marry Demetrius, she said that she would rather become a nun than marry him.
Despite Demetrius being well off, and charming, Hermia could not help but to fall in love with an
equally derived man, whose only fault was not having her father's consent: Lysander. Although in
Athens in the year 1600, a forced marriage would be seen as the elitist societal norm, in today 's
Western culture, this is considered a violation of one's freedoms and rights. While some people may
choose to continue their cultural traditions to have their marriages arranged for them, or rather just
be rid of the stress to find the perfect compatible partner, both parties of the people

A Midsummer Night 's Dream By William Shakespeare
Before the birth of William Shakespeare as a playwright, no craftsman could skillfully create a
world composed of contradictions so shocking, yet profoundly insightful to the human condition.
Shakespeare accomplishes the impossible by bringing many contradictory elements into his play, A
Midsummer Night's Dream, a comedy on the verge of tragedy. In this play, many of his characters
allude to the moon through the use of repetitive metaphors. Shakespeare specifically compares the
moon to time as a means to juxtapose various elements of his play: eagerness and reluctance,
chastity and fertility, as well as tragedy and comedy. In the opening lines of the play, Theseus, the
Duke of Athens, refers to the moon as he awaits his forthcoming wedding: Another moon; but O,
methinks, how slow This old moon wanes! She lingers in my desires, Like to a stepdame or
dowager Long withering out a young man's revenue. (MND 1.1.3–6) This metaphorical
personification of the moon demonstrates Theseus' eagerness for his wedding night with Hippolyta,
his wife to be. During Shakespeare's time, the moon often symbolized time, and in this case, it is
used as a metaphor for the passage of time. Theseus also compares the moon to an elderly
stepmother or widow taking far too long to pass away, preventing him from receiving an inheritance
sooner. This creates a very harsh image for the reader, and it demonstrates that Theseus is impatient,
opportunistic and aggressive. On the other hand,

Representation Of Love In A Midsummer Night Dream
In A Midsummer's Night Dream, love is represented in many ways, but the overall representation of
love is how fake and sophisticated it is. We can see in the play that love isn't a conscious choice but
a cruel game. The characters perfectly display how sophisticated and powerful love is, yet it is also
confusing. Specifically, the relationship between Theseus and Hippolyta has no pure love involved
in it. Theseus had to capture the Amazons in order to marry Hippolyta, which means he doesn't have
any real feeling towards Hippolyta. There are many aspects of how this complex or fake or forced
love is represented. In the play we can quarrel about the complex and sophisticated element of love,
why fake love is the most important representation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When we are introduced to Titania and Oberon we are also introduced to a dispute they are having.
"Give me that boy, and I will go with thee," but Titania refuses and leaves (2.1.128). Titania confers
the problems going on in the forest, but Oberon is only interested in the changeling boy. Oberon's
selfishness cause his love for Titania a problem. Towards the end when he finally gains possession
of the boy Oberon states, "And now I have the boy, I will undo/ This hateful imperfection of her
eyes: (4.1.46) Therefore, he loves Titania only because he has gotten possession of the boy and that
is not a sign of easy going love but only selfishness. Hence, these three instances, state how
eminently complex and sophisticated love is in the play.
We see a lot of examples of fake or forced love throughout the play that make fake love an assertive
representation of love throughout the book. Firstly, Hermia's father Egeus is forcing her to marry
Demetrius, while she wants to marry Lysander. "You can endure the livery of a nun, for aye to be in
shady cloister mewed, to live a barren sister all your life." (1.1.70–73) Theseus gave her three
options to die, marry Demetrius, or become a widow. She refuses and runs away with Lysander to
his aunt's house. In this example, we can see Hermia is forced to love someone she does not.
Another example of forced love can be seen when Oberon enchants Demetrius after seeing him be
abhorrent towards Helena. So, since

Theme Of Imagination In A Midsummer Night Dream
A Midsummer's Night Dream by William Shakespeare demonstrates that imagination is an amazing
thing, as it allows the audience to think differently and be unique and form new ideas, concepts and
images. Shakespeare's play uses an immense amount of imagination to help develop the story create
conflicts and complications to engage the audience. Imagination is also used in the way Shakespeare
presents the play to the audience and in the way the characters are presented. Imagination is used a
lot in A Midsummer's Night Dream to help develop the story. An example of Shakespeare using
imagination to help develop the story is when he added fairies to the story which the mortals were
unaware of. This added a completely different aspect to the play as it created more complications
and helped develop the issues they were facing. For example when Oberon and Titania were fighting
over the Indian prince, Oberon ordered Puck his jester to harvest a magical love flower. This love
flower caused Demetrius and Lysander who both loved Hermia to both love Helena instead. This
caused a lot of conflict and confusion and lead Helena to believe that Lysander, Demetrius and
Hermia were trying to make fun of her. "Damn it! I see you're all determined to gang up on me for a
few laughs." (Sparknotes, 2003:95) all this drama caused by the fairies helped make for a more
interesting play and developed the storyline of the play even further. Besides Shakespeare using
imagination to develop his storyline, he also utilised a lot of imagination in the way that he
presented the play to the audience. An example of Shakespeare's unique ways of presenting a play
was the idea of having the characters in A Midsummer's Night Dream put on a play within the play.
Shakespeare's idea of having a play within the play showcased and used a lot of imagination. For
example, when the craftsmen, who were putting on the play had limited resources and had to have
someone play the part of the wall. Which Pyramus and Thisbe whom were the main characters in
the craftsmen's play would talk through, scenes like this in the craftsmen's play showcased a lot of
imagination. Even though the play that the craftsmen presented was poorly rehearsed and didn't use

the themes of the play being important to understanding Lysander's character, the way he is

Demetrius delivers this line in the forest after Helena has provided him with the information
concerning Hermia and Lysander's plans to elope. Since Demetrius has taken what he wants from

The relationship between Helena and Hermia displays friendship love: "Is all the counsel that we
two have shared, The sisters' vows, the hours we have spent" (Act III, Scene II, Ln 188–189). This
clearly shows the strong bond between Helena and Hermia. The fact that they confide in each other
and have secrets between them shows trust, love and a strong friendship. The last phrase of the
quote suggests a deep and long history between them, and this in turn implies the idea of friendship–
love to be more long lasting, because the quote gives the idea the friends to be like sisters. Much
like when Helena is listing out the comparisons of their closeness: ......... So we grew together, Like

Intro Paragraph:In the play A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare.Shakespeare
portrays four different kinds of love, parental love, romantic love and complicated love. The way I see
what he shows us readers is that love is in a way connected to life because life is very unpredictable
since no one's what will happen tomorrow in a way love is the same way it is very unpredictable
because you never know where is might end up. Just like in the play who knew if Hermia and

Identifies the title and author: A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare is complicated
love. In this play four young adults are madly in love with each other but there are an imbalance of
the love each one has for each other. Hermia loves Lysander, Lysander loves Hermia, Helena loves
Demetrius, and Demetrius loves Hermia instead of Helena. This is a very complicated love because
we have the romantic couple who are madly in love Lysander and Hermia but, yet Helena is madly
in love with Demetrius but doesn't have eyes for her. These love relations between one another
become even more complicated between these young people because punk accidently applies the
love potion to Lysander's eyelids which once he awakes see Helena and falls in love with her the
same love potion was applied to Demetrius's eyelids who also falls in love with Helena once he
awakes. Both of them being in love with Hermia confuses Helena and Hermia.

Midsummer Night's Dream is a perfect example of just how deceit can tear people apart. When

Through Athens I am thought as fair as she. But what of that? Demetrius thinks not so. He will not

A Midsummer Nights Dream By William Shakespeare
Shakespeare presents the male characters within the play as either being fickle or faithful, he does
this using many techniques. By putting each male character under a situation can express both their
faithfulness and their fickleness, also by giving evidence to represent how they are either fickle and
faithful allows us as a reader to figure it out at our own accord. Theseus can be described as faithful
but with elements of fickle, character within A Midsummer Nights dream. It has been said by
Shirley Nelson Garner, a critic that "Theseus remains a 'lover–and–leaver of women', who having
abducted Hippolyta, naturally sympathises with Egues' desire to force Hermia into marriage with
Demetrius". It is clear to the audience that Theseus wishes to love and respect Hippolyta, "I wooed
thee with my sword, and won thy love doing thee injuries, but will wed thee in another key". He
switches from being a man in battle who defeated Hippolyta, to loving her and on the verge of
marrying her. However, feminists may argue that this shows his fickle side, as 'Theseus is the ruler
of Athens and therefore a domineering male who thinks that he can legitimise his violence with a
display of love and companionship'. Egeus is another strong male character within the play, however
some critics may argue that 'he is just a stock character of comedy due to his self–righteousness and
his ridiculous demands'. Egeus is clearly fickle to his daughter, due to the simple fact of not letting
her marry

Dramatic Irony In A Midsummers Night Dream
In his comedic play, A Midsummers Night Dream (1595), William Shakespeare utilizes the
enchanting adventures of young Athenian lovers and a group of low–class rudimentary actors and
their shared experiences with supernatural creatures to portray the opportunity of being in command
of their destiny. By presenting conflicts to these three diverse realms, Shakespeare allows these
characters to connect despite their hierarchical distinctions to reveal their determination to conquer
their adversity. He uses dramatic irony, metaphor, and symbolism to heighten the audience's
awareness of their self–determination and their firm control on their future. Shakespeare inspires the
public by instilling in them that despite their challenging circumstances, they can still be masters of
their own fate, bestowing a feeling of newfound hope and freewill. First, Shakespeare encompasses
dramatic irony, metaphor, and symbolism in the Athenian's world to emphasize the ideology of
freedom of choice. In the in the introduction of the play, Hermia and Lysander are proclaimed to by
their elders that they cannot pursue a romantic relationship and Hermia is given options that are
disadvantageous for her relationship with Lysander. In response to this dreadful ultimatum, Lysander
declares "There, gentle Hermia, may I marry thee,/ And to that place the sharp Athenian law/Cannot
pursue us" .(Act 1, Scene 1, Lines 163–164). The irony is conveyed to the viewers because Egeus
believes his disobedient

Shakespeare's Presentation of Love in a Midsummer Nights...
Shakespeare's Presentation of Love in a Midsummer Nights Dream
A midsummer nights dream was originally supposed to have been performed at a wedding.
Therefore the theme of love would have been a suitable theme for the play. In this play, as in many
of Shakespeare's plays the main theme is love. Shakespeare presents many different aspects of love
in the play. He shows how love can affect your vision of reality and make you behave in irrational
ways. He presents many ways in which your behavior is affected by the different types and aspects
of love. The main types of love he presents are; true love, fake love, unrequited love, young and
irrational love and platonic love. Shakespeare tries to show ... Show more content on

Shakespeare also presents irrational and short–lived love. The love brought in by Titania and
Bottom also based on false impressions and appearance. Oberon shows jealousy towards Titania of
Bottom and others, their love is true in the end when she realizes what Bottom really looks like and
that she never loved him but Oberon.
Shakespeare shows the emotions and social standing of the characters by the language he gives them
to use in their speeches. He uses a mixture of blank verse, prose and poetic verse throughout the
play. He does so in all his plays. When the characters speak to each other in poetic verse it indicates
that they share a type of love between them. Poetic verse is usually associated with lovers writing
poetry to each other. This changes between certain characters as that confusion is misleading them
or false emotions are shown. When Helena and Hermia argue the way they speak to each other
changes when they both think the other has betrayed the other. When the workmen are trying to
speak in verse, but it is very poor quality, it shows that they are trying to act on being someone else,
but they are not doing a good job. The language of the workmen is that of the lower classes in
Shakespeare's time. They speak in prose usually. They try to speak in verse so the parts of Pyramus

A Midsummer Night 's Dream By William Shakespeare
Relationships are what controls everything in a person's life. There is even a psychological stage in
human development where the average human's biggest problem is creating relationships. This
simple fact of life has been found all throughout media, history, and even daily life. It has been seen
especially in plays throughout the world. In "A Midsummer Night's Dream" by William Shakespeare
a marriage between Theseus and Hippolyta is being planned and ends up coinciding with the
deadline for Hermia to marry Demetrius, a man she doesn't love. The marriage has been set up by
her father, but she truly loves another man. This other man is Lysander. While Hermia is being
fought over, Helena confesses her love of Demetrius although it isn't reciprocated. And while all of
these relationships are being played out and followed, the king and queen of the fairies are having a
large fight. This entire play is truly controlled by these different relationships. The main relationship
that controls the plot is between King Oberon and Queen Titania of the fairies. Their fight is what
truly propels the rest of the story on. Queen Titania took this small, Indian boy that they both want,
and King Oberon wants him. She refuses and he decides that he wants to have some revenge. He
orders Robin Goodfellow, one of his pucks, to find a flower which juice, if sprinkled on a sleeping
person's eyes, will cause them to fall in love with the next person they see. He intends to do this to

Midsummers Night Dream
How does the 'play within the play' enhance your enjoyment of the rest of A Midsummer Night's
Dream? If not, why not? I would argue that A Midsummer Night's Dream is one of Shakespeare's
greatest comedies. Comedy is in abundance in A Midsummer Night's Dream, especially in 'the play
within the play'. 'The play within the play' is a key characteristic in A Midsummer Night's Dream
and deserves a thorough analysis as it holds a tight link to the main plot of this play. This part of the
play takes up most of act V and allows a cheerful and comical ending to the play. 'The play within
the play' adds deeper meaning and understanding to the play as an entirety and it mirrors certain
aspects of the play as a whole. The play that group of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However puke gets mixed up and instead he anoints the eyes of Lysander therefore causing him to
fall in love with Helina, leaving Hermia without her beloved Lysander. Yet the Oberon soon makes
Puke correct his mistake and reunites the lovers correctly. Lysander and Hermia fall back in love
with the help of some more love juice. Helina eventually gets her wish. Demetrius is as in love with
her as she is in love is with him. As if there wasn't enough characters getting upset and confused,
Shakespeare also adds nearly an equal measure of confusion into 'the play within the play'. Just as
the Athenian lovers were bewildered and fooled, so too was Pyramus. He mistakenly believed that
his love Thisbe has been killed by the lion. This almost exact mirroring of the main themes and
ideas of A Midsummer Night's Dream enhances the quality and enjoyment of 'the play within the
play' and the entire play itself. 'The play within the play' gave me something to compare my views
on A Midsummer Night's Dream against. The impact that 'the play within the play' has on the
audience is very subtle yet it is a major link in the play as a whole. When A Midsummer Night's
Dream begins it has all the making of a tragedy. The father who refuses to let her daughter wed the
man she is in love with, who instead orders her to marry a man who he sees fit. Hermias father
wants her killed for disobeying her. The mention of death is also

Midsummer Night 's Dreams Essay
Midsummer Night's Dreams Essay The Midsummer Night's Dreams, a comedy written by the
famous British poet William Shakespeare, describes the events that relate to the wedding of Theseus
and Hippolyta. It is composed of four interconnected plots that tell us the nature of love, including
the adventure of four Athenian lovers: Demetrius, Helena, Lysander and Hermia; Oberon's revenge
on Titania and the mechanicals who are the six amateur actors. Among all these characters, two of
the four lovers, Hermia and Helena, are similar in their attitude towards love. They both believe that
they are the objects of love. However, they are different in their actions, ideas, appearance and
personality. Hermia behaves in a virtuous way and she is also a confident and bold girl. On the
contrary, Helena behaves in a defenseless and weak way, which shows that she does not have much
confidence in herself. When Hermia and Helena encounter their love, Hermia's actions are different
from those of Helena. Hermia's father, Egeus, announces that, Demetrius has his consent to marry
his daughter (P9). Hermia disobeys her father, saying that, "refuse to wed Demetrius" (P11) because
she loves Lysander so much that she makes a decision which is running away from Athens with
Lysander. However, in the forest, Lysander requests to sleep by Hermia's side: "One turf shall serve
as pillow for us both; One heart, one bed, two bosoms, and one troth" (P57). Hermia is
conscientious enough about what virtue

Theme Of Metadrama In A Midsummer Night Dream

  • 1. Theme Of Metadrama In A Midsummer Night Dream Shakespeare Question 1 – Metadrama in A Midsummer Night Dream. Metadrama refers to a play featured in the plot of another play. Shakespeare presents metadrama in A Midsummer Night Dream in several ways. There is evidence of metadrama in the soliloquy by Helena at the end of the Act 1. In this instance, Helena talks about her emotions and feelings. She goes on to act out her emotions stating that it is not possible to grasp love by the eyes. She says that love can only be captured via perception. The soliloquy sets up the ground work for other such instances in the acts that follow. It is important to observe the relationship between 'eye' and 'I' in Helena's soliloquy as a rhyme. "Through Athens I am thought as fair as she. But what of that? Demetrius thinks not so. He will not know what all but he do know. And as he errs, doting on Hermia's eyes. So I, admiring of his qualities." (Act 1, scene 1) Helena follows Demetrius into the forest as she sings with love and kindness. While this does not qualify as soliloquy, it falls under metadrama as the playwright wishes to share Helena's message with the audience. Her actions are self–contradictory if one refers to her previous soliloquy. She is unable to fathom or accept that Demetrius does not love her. This should be contrasted to her earlier claims that it is not possible to grasp love by the eyes. Shakespeare develops the paradox as an important exemplification of metadrama in A Midsummer Night Dream. Helena's character is a product of her era such that contradiction is a rarity. Discrepancy between actions and words was seen as egoism and was only accepted in fiction as opposed to the society. Like Shakespeare, many playwrights from the era did not shy away from including such metadramatic devices in their plays. Helena has the social traits of her time making it difficult for the audience to accept her actions toward Demetrius as anything other than dramatic acts. For a Renaissance woman, the audience would expect her to portray a higher level of realism. "Then to the wood will he to–morrow night. Pursue her; and for this intelligence. If I have thanks, it is a dear expense. But herein mean I to enrich my pain." (Act 1, scene 1) As hinted above, the first ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. A Midsummer Night 's Dream By William Shakespeare A Midsummer Night's Dream is a comedy written by the notorious playwright Shakespeare. This story is filled with illusion and misconception, leaving the characters in a daze. Pertinent to the title of the play is this illusion in which everyone determines to be a dream. In addition to the origin of the dream is the midsummer night when it occurs. Though the story begins and concludes in Theseus's castle in Athens, it mainly takes place in the woods at night. Hitherto, the story ensues on a midsummer night where the characters are met with a peculiar situation. Though everyone holds a different reason as to why they end up in the woods, their stories become intertwined. The play revolves around deception, but one that provides laughter ... At the same time that this is occurring, their is another subplot that has to do with two young women and two young men. Hermia and Lysander are in love, yet Demetrius is in love with Hermia. On the outside of this love triangle is Helena, who is in love with Demetrius. The flower comes into effect again when Oberon tells Goodfellow to put the juice of the flower onto Demetrius' eyes to make him love Helena. This leads to a misunderstanding where Lysander is given the juice and falls in love with Helena, "Not Hermia but Helena I love" (II.II. line 120). Then Demetrius is touched by the juice and falls in love with Helena, reversing the love triangle. Furthermore, these subplots tie into the main plot that pertains to the union of Theseus and Hippolyta. In the first scene of Act I, Theseus says, "Now, fair Hippolyta, our nuptial hour draws on apace" (I.I. line 1–2), further marking the main plot that holds all others. There are six major characters present in this play, with the rest of them being supporting roles. Fairy King Oberon is the protagonist of the story, manipulating each character in order to get what he wants. His main goal is to obtain Titania's Indian boy, "I do but beg a little changeling boy, To be my henchman" ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. A Midsummer Nights Dream Essay In the comedic romantic play, A Midsummer Night's Dream, by William Shakespeare, four plebeians are fighting for fate and destiny in the city of Athens, Greece. Hermia, a strong willed young lady, defies her father's orders to marry Demetrius, another Athenian man, and subsequently runs off to the woods to marry Lysander. However, when the lovers, Hermia and Lysander, run off, their plans are disrupted when they are told on by Helena, Demetrius's obsessive lover. At this moment, Lysander, after learning about the others disrupting their plans to elope, says "the course of true love never did run smooth" (28) Later, when the love potion is placed onto the lovers by Puck, the well known trickster, and the other fairies such as Oberon ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lots of feelings between Hermia, Lysander, Helena and Demetrius are not mutual and are only a series of unconnected lines from one person to another to another. This truly demonstrates the hardships and complications of true love and how it does not always go as perfect as planned. Many problems arise because of the mixups between the love juice and the fairies. One such mixup is when Hermia and Lysander's plans to elope are very suddenly halted when Helena hears of their plans and tells Demetrius, who decides to see if Helena's rumors are true. Demetrius then goes into the woods, followed by Helena, to see if it is true, but does not find the lovers, but instead are seen by Oberon. Oberon, while having love issues of his own with Titania, sees Helena and her obsessive love for Demetrius, and so makes a plan to help Helena with her love issues. When Oberon, of which is busy with other tasks, tells Puck to put the supernatural love juice on the eyes of an Athenian man (Demetrius) so that he will fall in love with Helena, he gladly takes the task. Though since Oberon is not specific with his directions for the love potion, Puck accidentally puts it on Lysander while he is sleeping. Consequently, when Lysander awakens he automatically falls in love with Helena. These forms differ from one–another such as the difference between love for food and love for one's spouse. However, in the play; "A Midsummer Night's Dream", love takes different forms than the ones experienced in reality. One can classify the different types of love used in this play into three different categories; true love, love produced by cupid's flower, and the state of lust. 'True love' is a form of love that has a distinct aura around it and serves as the baseline in the play. Hippolyta proceeds to call Oberon 'my Lord' and Oberon calls Hippolyta 'my Queen'. This shows that their love is still prevalent. 'True love' is the baseline in the play and is the primary form of love. The love produced by Cupid's flower serves as comedic relief in the play and can be considered to be the second form of love. The love produced by the love juice causes one to fall in love with the first living creature they see and do not seem to occupy themselves with anything that does not involve their lover. Titania enamores over Bottom once she wakes up: I pray thee, gentle mortal, sing again. Mine ear is much enamored of thy note, So is mine eye enthralled to thy shape, And thy fair virtue's force perforce doth move me On the first view to say, to swear, I love thee. (3.1.139–143) The above shows the second form of love which is the love produced from the juice of cupid's flower. It is keen to note that one who is enthralled with cupid's love does not involve themselves in any other activity that is not flattering their lover. This is emphasised when Titania orders the fairies to respect and be courteous to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. A Midsummer Nights Dream: Fairies and Their Purpose Fairies and Their Purpose The fairies and the fairy realm have many responsibilities in this play. The most important of which is that they are the cause of much of the conflict and comedy within this story. They represent mischievousness and pleasantry which gives the play most of its emotion and feeling. They relate to humans because they make mistakes but differ in the fact that they do not understand the human world. Robin is the most notable fairy in the play and is the servant of the fairy king, Oberon. Along with Oberon, Robin is the most comedic and protagonistic character in this play. The human actors provide entertainment for the duke and elite of Athens as the fairies provide entertainment for the audience and the lovers in the forest. The servants of Oberon and Titania reflect the servants of Theseus and the performers of the play in the fact that both groups of servants are controlled by a higher power. "That thou shalt like an airy spirit go. Peaseblossom, Cobweb, Mote, and Mustardseed!" Both fairies and humans fall in love with another as shown between Titania and Oberon and Lysander and Hermia. The fairies also differ from the members from the human world in many ways. The most notable is that the fairies can turn into little pixie–like creatures and fly away, a feat never accomplished by a human as of yet. The humans have a better understanding of technology and inventions such as the phonograph. "Lord, what fools these mortals be!" The fairies were using phonograph as a table for fruit and were frightened when Bottom showed them that it played music. The play is about the struggle of love between four essential characters: Hermia, Lysander, Demetrius , and Helena. However, it is not quite that simple. The play is quite confusing. In "Midsummer Night's dream" the play take place in two realms fairy realm and human realm, two of the three main settings. At one point during the play the realms converge Making it difficult for the audience to distinguish the difference between reality and illusion within the play. • 8. William Shakespeare 's The Midsummer Night Dream Our group focused on a chapter from Shakespeare's Festive Comedy, "May Games and Metamorphoses on a Midsummer Night" by Barber, C.L. From this section of the book, it gave me a new insight regarding to Shakespeare's play The Midsummer 's Night Dream. Barber did a great job in his explanation on the romance part of the play and also on the metamorphoses part, however he was unorganized and the methods he used to explain his ideas were confusing. In the scene, where Lysander and Hermia plans to escape, Barber refers to Romeo and Juliet. At that point of the play, they are star–cross lovers and their love is being frowned upon Also, Lysander refers to their love as a struck of lighten meaning it was love at first sight, which also happened in Romeo and Juliet. When people fall in love at first sight it shows that love itself is blind. Their relationship is out of the ordinary because during the Renaissance it is the parents or authorities that took control over marriage. Those that reject that rule usually ends in a tragedy. Another scene that Barber amplifies love is blind, was the scene between Demetrius and Helena. Demetrius, who just fell out of love with Helena, was blindly in love with Hermia who despises him. Helena whom would give the world to be with Demetrius is also blind by love because no matter how hard Demetrius pushes her away, she still clingy to him. • 9. Analysis Of ' A Midsummer Night 's Dream ' The supernatural world is rather distinct to that of the human world entrenched in societal standards and boundaries. Shakespeare's play, 'A Midsummer Night's Dream', explores this concept, particularly through the use of Puck. In agreement to Harold Bloom's statement, the following essay will analyse how Puck is significant because, by being so disparate, he is able to show the limitations of the human. This will be done through, first, exploring a definition of the human in relation to the supernatural. Subsequently, the essay will use a Freudian lense to analyse the morality of Puck and, lastly, the essay will focus on Puck's physical characteristics as well as his ability to span across boundaries in the play and the metatheatrical realm. Harold Bloom insists that "Puck, quicksilver and uncaring, defines the limits of the human by being so far apart from the human". This correlates with defining the human as a being that is distinguishable in characteristics to that of a god, divine spirit or supernatural entity (OED Online). Thus, by using such a definition one can explore how Bloom's statement is valid. The first way in which Puck differs from the human and, thus, defines their limitations is through the immoral and "uncaring" mind he has (Bloom 5). This can be explored through Freudian terminology. According to Freud, humans can only access the conscious mind and its superego which involves everyday functions and societal expectations (Siegfried 2). They cannot access ... The main characters are lovers who are either unrequited in their love or hassled by the love of another. These lovers are inevitably paired. How does Shakespeare make this happen? He creates many subplots that, before long, are all snarled up into a chaotic knot. So, what actions does Shakespeare take to resolve these new quandaries? He ends up trusting a single key entity with his comedy. It's only then that he introduces a special character into his world: a mischievous fairy whom is known by the name of Puck. And, indeed, it does. This is how he comes to hold Oberon's trust during the play; his love and obedience for his king lead Oberon to choose Puck as his deputy in his plot against Titania. His loyalty are also intricately tied in with his playful nature. He tries not to do anything that would anger or disappoint his king. However, even his kind nature is tested by human antics. Puck does not have a very high opinion of the mortal lovers or of the arrogant Bottom. His famous quote "What fools these mortals be" (III.ii.115) indicates his feelings about the lovers. If Puck were less loving of his King, and more in favor of his own amusement, he very well might leave the lovers as they are in the middle of the play if only for the entertainment value. Puck tells Oberon "And so far am I glad it so did sort, as this their jangling I esteem a sport" (III.ii.352–353). It is likely that he would think the mixed up lovers to be grand entertainment and leave them the way they are for his enjoyment. If Puck were meaner, then he might change Bottom completely into an ass and leave him that way. Instead, he is kind and removes the ass's head. His gentle nature is exhibited in the last lines of the play as well: "Gentles, do not reprehend. If you pardon, we will mend"(V.i.424–425). He asks them to not be offended by the play. • 13. Midsummer Night Dream Analysis A Midsummer's Night Dream William Shakespeare is a successful playwright as he uses the style of history, tragedy and comedy which is an entertaining aspect that is in all his plays. One of his plays, 'A midsummer's night dream', includes the themes of love and magic, where love is represented as a force that makes people act in irrational ways to entertain the audience in a comical and dramatic way. He used different techniques throughout the play to create a tumultuous and intriguing factor. The storyline of the play follows various couples such as Hermia and Lysander and Oberon and Titania. These couples show examples of irrational behaviours with love and magic throughout the play. Hermia and Lysander behave irrationally throughout the whole play because they're head over heels for each other; however, their love is oppressed by both her father Egeus and the strict Athenian law. In Act 1, Scene 1 when Egeus is at court with Hermia he uses a demanding and dominating tone to state, 'as she is mine i may dispose of her' This causes them to act spontaneously and irrationally and as a consequence, they run away from Athens to get married. This entertains the audience by adding more conflict and complication to the story. After they elope to the forest, magic becomes the force that turns love to a dramatic and conflict filled experience that is also entertaining. Lysander acts in irrational ways when he is put under the spell of 'Love in Idleness' where he states how madly he loves on Helena, and how much he hates Hermia. 'Hang off, thou cat, thou burr! Vile thing, let loose, / or I will shake thee from me like a serpent.' Derogatory language and repetition is used to emphasise his hate toward Hermia and orders her to leave him alone. For example, in Act 3, Scene 2, Lysander has fallen in love with Helena and tells Hermia how he hates her. 'Out, loathed medicine! O hated potion, hence!' Conflict between characters create comedy in the play which entertains the audience because of the dramatic irony. Lysander's insults in the statement are repetition as it is the same meaning but in different words. This language technique emphasises that Lysander wants Hermia to leave him alone. • 15. A Midsummer Night 's Dream Essay In A Midsummer Night's Dream, one of the most poignant similes occurs when Theseus advises Hermia that she should yield to her father's wishes because she is his creation, a figure in wax, and he has the power to command her, mold her, or destroy her at will (MND I.I.49–51). In Athenian society, a woman is expected to yield control of her life to men and to allow them to mold her affections to their will. The simile of a woman as a wax figure suggest that the only resolution to conflict is for the woman to yield and mold to meet the man's expectations. The play overall, however, suggests that the better resolution to conflict, and the better path to a happy ending, comes in the form of a man conforming to the wishes of the woman, like a moldable wax figure. To demonstrate this, in the wood, when Oberon is guided by his own sense of justice, he seeks to mold the will of the men to that of the women. In contrast, when motivated by his own self–interest, his treatment of Titania closely resembles the attitude of Athens. Moreover, the resolution to the main conflict of the play, namely Hermia's refusal to marry Demetrius, comes in the form of Demetrius' mind being changed by Oberon's magic. These events provide evidence against the view that women, not men, are supposed to be malleable. In summary, this simile establishes an expectation of women's behavior that is later both echoed and challenged throughout the play, which has significant effects on the outcome of the plot and ... A Midsummer Night's Dream, written by William Shakespeare is a play best known in the Shakespearian world for being a comedy play. This play has entertained countless audiences over a span of many centuries. A Midsummer Night's Dream is about two pairs of lovers that escape to the forest in order to make love for one another. While doing so, fairies in the forest create chaos which causes the lover to be confused in who they truly love. The misinterpretation on their identity relates to the major theme of the play which is love versus lust and reality versus illusions. The language the Shakespeare chose to use in the play to create an interesting plotline creates humor as well as entertaining the audience. Among the language use, the literary devices that are most prominent to make the play humorous are dramatic irony, enjambment, and imagery. These devices not only entertain and create humor for the audience but also help develop a plotline in which many are interested in. • 18. Theme Of The Moon In A Midsummer Night Dream The sun is a constant in our lives. We wake up to it faithfully rising on the horizon. We enjoy its unceasing warmth and energy throughout the day before falling asleep after it sets. With night passing quickly, we take no notice of the moon that resides in place of the sun. However, it is this unnoticed moon that more accurately mirrors our perception of time and the phases in our lives. William Shakespeare realized this about the moon. In his play, A Midsummer's Night Dream, he uses the motif of the moon to symbolize both time and the phases in our lives just as he does through the characters of the play. Shakespeare conveys the passage of time through the character of Theseus early on in the play. Theseus, referencing the moon, expresses his distaste for how slow time is passing by saying in line 2: "Another moon: but, O, methinks, how slow this old moon wanes! she lingers my desires, like to a step–dame or a dowager long withering out a young man revenue" (AMND 1.1.3–6.) Theseus is dissatisfied because he wants to be with his fiance, Hippolyta, now rather than waiting for the moon to wane. However, Hippolyta reassuringly replies to Theseus in line 8, "that Four days will quickly steep themselves in night; Four nights will quickly dream away the time; And then the moon, like to a silver bow new–bent in heaven, shall behold the night of our solemnities" (1.1.7–11). Hippolyta, also referring to the moon, is telling Theseus that soon enough the time will be here for them to be together. Another example of the moon representing time can be seen when Theseus is speaking to Hermia about who she will marry and how she will obey her father's commands. "Take time to pause; and, by the nest new moon– The sealing–day betwixt my love and me," (1.1.85–87). Here again, Shakespeare uses the motif of the moon to represent time and effectively shows how his characters live their lives around it. Shakespeare also uses the idea of moon phases to symbolize both the difficulties and the good fortunes in one's life. For example, Shakespeare relates the darkness of the moon to the "difficult" life of a nun and the "difficult" decision that Hermia must make. In Lines 70–78, Theseus declares to Hermia, "Whether, if ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

What stuck out to me was the meaning of that, the multi–layered symbolism. From the title of the play to the ending speech, the possibility of this being a dream is clearly stated. Inside of that the woods are a dreamlike state that are outside of Athens in what could be called a purgatory between the reality of Athens and the fiction of the play within the play. Through the changes in setting, Helena's idea of love being able to take different forms is constantly recycled. The various viewpoints of love within the play are all individually described in the differing settings, which culminates in an outside perspective that is hindsight. To be able to look back and see that the various metaphors of love are unable to stand alone and must be combined in order to see love objectively. The play begins in Athens in which the constraints on love are rigid and conservative. The social pressures of the hierarchal structure of Athens are what place the bounds on love. The potential of humanity is a frightening concept to authoritative figures of government control. • 22. Scene Analysis in "A Midsummer Nights Dream" 'Midsummer Nights Dream' is one of Shakespeare's most famous and successful plays. The play was part of Shakespeare's early work. It was written and performed around 1595. 'A Midsummer Nights Dream' is a romantic comedy play; and that's what I will be focusing on how Shakespeare creates humour in act 5 scene 1. So how does he create humour? There are many ways as to how Shakespeare creates humour; one of the main reasons is through the characters. There are there sets of characters the fairies, court and the mechanicals in this case it's the mechanicals. The mechanicals are normal workers that want to become actors. They are uneducated, you can tell this because Bottom (mechanical) says in act 4 scene 2 line 20 "Where are these lads?" ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Theseus comments on the childish actors by saying "His speech was like a tangled chain, nothing impaired, but all disordered." Act 5 scene, lines 123–124. This shows that because of Quince's lack of education he cannot send the right information he wants to send to the audience. Due to the bumpy start of the play the court had already created a comical atmosphere. All of this entertainment and amuses the audience (both in the play and watching the play). The themes of this play are mostly to do with love and magic however the play as a whole is a comedy. The magic scene is the scene that brings the whole play together. Without it the lovers would not be called lovers and there wouldn't be a marriage. Before Puck put the love potion on them Lysander was in love with Hermia but her dad wanted her to marry Demetrius; and Helena was in love with Demetrius and Demetrius was in love with Hermia. Puck sorted things out by putting a love potion on Demetrius so that he falls in love with Helena. The funny part about it all is when they are all confused when they awake from what they think is a dream which is a dramatic irony because we know it wasn't a dream but in fact a reality. One of the ways Shakespeare creates humour in the mechanicals performance is with the usage of props. Through Shakespeare's intelligent writing skills he sends a strong message that there is a man playing a wall. This is funny because Snout(playing the wall) actually has a speech ... The domineering relationship between subjugate and submission is a governing factor within the comedic realm of Athens. A Midsummer Night's Dream can be described as the most "greenest" of all of Shakespeare's works as it is the play that contains the most elements of the outside world away from the city and court life. Because the genre of this play is a comedy, we know that everything will turn out okay. The title of this play includes in it two elements: the first being that midsummer is a time of feasting and marrying, but also of liminal moment, when something ends but something else begins. The second is that a dream occurs in the play. The fantastical world of fairies and magic in the plot is directly related to the phenomenon of love since all of the falling in and out of love occurs in a forest of fairy magic in ancient Greece of Athens. The play includes scenes of lovers searching for fulfillment in the arms of characters who are unavailable. Demetrius's obsession for Hermia makes Helena feel ugly and unwanted. By the time the love potion going around causes both Lysander and Demetrius to fall in love with her, Helena is so used to the hate–filled words and full of insecurity she feels they're playing a trick on her. Before the love potion she couldn't even compare to Hermia in Demetrius's eyes. She couldn 't bring herself to see why they would both be in love with her when she couldn 't even get one of them to love her before. She's spent so long comparing herself to Hermia and trying to be like her she forgets her own self worth. Demetrius's love is a whole other negative portrayal of love. His love can mostly be seen as superficial. Up until meeting Hermia, Demetrius was betrothed to Helena and in love with her as well. " Demetrius, I 'll avouch it to his head, Made love to Nedar 's daughter, Helena, And won her soul; and she, sweet lady, dotes, Devoutly dotes, dotes in idolatry, Upon this spotted and inconstant man. Shakespeare, the playwright of A Midsummer Night's Dream, is infamous for his angst and lament, as well as his numerous depictions of love and romance. In his play, one of the most apparent perspectives of love is that genuine love is a force so powerful, that it can not be imitated, replicated or enforced. One of the most profound examples of forced love in the play is exhibited through the relationship between Hermia and Demetrius, two Athenians who are being forced to be married by Hermia's father, Egeus. In their relationship, only one of the parties is consenting to this arranged marriage: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In A Midsummer's Night Dream, written in the year 1600, one of the main conflicts of the play is a result of the unhappiness that results from a forced marriage. The surmised engagement is between the fairest women in all of Athens, Hermia, and the handsome and affluent, Demetrius. Demetrius is the man who gained Hermia's father's permission to marry her, but simultaneously not winning her affections, ''Ere I will my virgin patent up Unto his lordship, whose unwished yoke My soul consents not to give sovereignty'' (Shakespeare I.I.80–83). Because Hermia was willing to disobey her father (a true crime considering in the year 1600, women were considered the property of men), and refuse to marry Demetrius, she said that she would rather become a nun than marry him. Despite Demetrius being well off, and charming, Hermia could not help but to fall in love with an equally derived man, whose only fault was not having her father's consent: Lysander. Although in Athens in the year 1600, a forced marriage would be seen as the elitist societal norm, in today 's Western culture, this is considered a violation of one's freedoms and rights. • 27. A Midsummer Night 's Dream By William Shakespeare Before the birth of William Shakespeare as a playwright, no craftsman could skillfully create a world composed of contradictions so shocking, yet profoundly insightful to the human condition. Shakespeare accomplishes the impossible by bringing many contradictory elements into his play, A Midsummer Night's Dream, a comedy on the verge of tragedy. In this play, many of his characters allude to the moon through the use of repetitive metaphors. Shakespeare specifically compares the moon to time as a means to juxtapose various elements of his play: eagerness and reluctance, chastity and fertility, as well as tragedy and comedy. In the opening lines of the play, Theseus, the Duke of Athens, refers to the moon as he awaits his forthcoming wedding: Another moon; but O, methinks, how slow This old moon wanes! She lingers in my desires, Like to a stepdame or dowager Long withering out a young man's revenue. (MND 1.1.3–6) This metaphorical personification of the moon demonstrates Theseus' eagerness for his wedding night with Hippolyta, his wife to be. During Shakespeare's time, the moon often symbolized time, and in this case, it is used as a metaphor for the passage of time. Theseus also compares the moon to an elderly stepmother or widow taking far too long to pass away, preventing him from receiving an inheritance sooner. This creates a very harsh image for the reader, and it demonstrates that Theseus is impatient, opportunistic and aggressive. On the other hand, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Specifically, the relationship between Theseus and Hippolyta has no pure love involved in it. Theseus had to capture the Amazons in order to marry Hippolyta, which means he doesn't have any real feeling towards Hippolyta. • 29. Theme Of Imagination In A Midsummer Night Dream A Midsummer's Night Dream by William Shakespeare demonstrates that imagination is an amazing thing, as it allows the audience to think differently and be unique and form new ideas, concepts and images. Shakespeare's play uses an immense amount of imagination to help develop the story create conflicts and complications to engage the audience. Imagination is also used in the way Shakespeare presents the play to the audience and in the way the characters are presented. Imagination is used a lot in A Midsummer's Night Dream to help develop the story. An example of Shakespeare using imagination to help develop the story is when he added fairies to the story which the mortals were unaware of. This added a completely different aspect to the play as it created more complications and helped develop the issues they were facing. For example when Oberon and Titania were fighting over the Indian prince, Oberon ordered Puck his jester to harvest a magical love flower. This love flower caused Demetrius and Lysander who both loved Hermia to both love Helena instead. This caused a lot of conflict and confusion and lead Helena to believe that Lysander, Demetrius and Hermia were trying to make fun of her. "Damn it! I see you're all determined to gang up on me for a few laughs." (Sparknotes, 2003:95) all this drama caused by the fairies helped make for a more interesting play and developed the storyline of the play even further. Besides Shakespeare using imagination to develop his storyline, he also utilised a lot of imagination in the way that he presented the play to the audience. An example of Shakespeare's unique ways of presenting a play was the idea of having the characters in A Midsummer's Night Dream put on a play within the play. Shakespeare's idea of having a play within the play showcased and used a lot of imagination. For example, when the craftsmen, who were putting on the play had limited resources and had to have someone play the part of the wall. Theseus can be described as faithful but with elements of fickle, character within A Midsummer Nights dream. It has been said by Shirley Nelson Garner, a critic that "Theseus remains a 'lover–and–leaver of women', who having abducted Hippolyta, naturally sympathises with Egues' desire to force Hermia into marriage with Demetrius". It is clear to the audience that Theseus wishes to love and respect Hippolyta, "I wooed thee with my sword, and won thy love doing thee injuries, but will wed thee in another key". He switches from being a man in battle who defeated Hippolyta, to loving her and on the verge of marrying her. However, feminists may argue that this shows his fickle side, as 'Theseus is the ruler of Athens and therefore a domineering male who thinks that he can legitimise his violence with a display of love and companionship'.
