Educational Setting: Formal/University
Program: The teacher I interviewed is a
professor in the child development
program. The goal of this program is to
equip students with knowledge and skills,
which serves as a basis of in depth
comprehension of the needs of children
0-8 years old.
Q. How long have you been teaching and
have you always been a teacher of
adult learners?
A. She has been a teacher for 17 years. At
first, she taught preschool, then
elementary school, then college. She
has been teaching adult learners for 9
years.
Q. Why did you decide to start teaching in
the higher education field?
A. She started teaching in this field because
she wanted to help students pursuing a
degree in child development be prepared
for their careers. She wanted to teach her
students about the importance of
educating little learners and the
importance of their influence on children at
the preschool/elementary age. She
believes that lifelong learners are
influenced during the early ages.
Q. Have you faced more challenges teaching
adults or teaching children?
A. She stated that teaching any age can be
challenging. With young children, she was
able to mold them and teach them what
they needed to learn in order to transition
into grade school. With her adult learners,
she found it challenging to get them to
participate at first. As she became more
experienced, she was able to get her
students to be more involved in the learning
process.
Q. What is one teaching method that you
use to get students to interact with one
another?
A. She assigns group work each week.
Sometimes she assigns group discussions,
presentations, reports, or case studies.
She changes group members each
week so that everyone interacts with one
another.
Q. How important is creating a positive
learning environment?
A. She said that one of the most important
jobs of the teacher is to create an
environment that promotes learning. She
said that the teacher can have all the tools
to teach and the students can be willing to
learn but if the learning environment isn’t
inviting, then students will not push
themselves to learn. She like to make all her
students feel welcomed and comfortable
when they are in her classroom.
Q. What is the most rewarding part of your
job?
A. She said that she loves when her former
students comes to visit after graduation
and they are doing well after
graduation. She said that it is a great
feeling knowing that she can positively
influence her students and their careers.
This interview compares to what I have
learned in a couple of ways. The teacher
uses different methods to foster discussions
and interactions between students.
Numerous methods can be used to
facilitate the teaching-learning process
(Galbraith, 2004).The teacher also likes to
create an inviting learning environment.
Through inclusion, the learner and the
teacher feel respected and connected.
When people feel included, relevant
learning is possible (Galbraith, 2004).
