The Learners’ CharacteristicandNeeds | LEARNING EPISODE 2
/jikm
My Learning Episode Overview
Episode 2 provides me with an opportunity to observe learners of different ages and grade
levels. It highlights the differences in their characteristics and needs. As a future teacher, it is
important for me to determine my learners’ characteristics and needs so that I will be able to
plan and implement learning activities and assessment that are all developmentally appropriate.
My Intended Learning outcomes
In this episode, I must be able to differentiate the characteristics and needs of learners from
different developmental levels.
My Performance Criteria
I will be rated along the following:
 quality of my observation and documentation,
 completeness and depth of analysis,
 depth and clarity of classroomobservation-based reflection,
 completeness, organization, clarity of portfolio and
 time of submission of portfolio.
My Learning Essentials
Here are major principles of development relevant to this episode:
1. Development is relatively orderly. Development follows directional patterns such as,
from the head to toe (cephalocaudal), and from the center of the body then outwards
(proximodistal)
2. Development takes place gradually
3. All domains of development and learning physical, social and emotional, and cognitive
are important, and they are closely interrelated (NAEYC, 2009)
4. Development proceeds toward greater complexity, self-regulation, symbolic or
representational capabilities. (NAEYC, 2009).

The Learners’ CharacteristicandNeeds | LEARNING EPISODE 2
My Map
To realize my Intended Learning Outcomes, I will work my way through
these steps:
Step 1
Observe 3 groups
of learners from
different
levels(preschool,
Elem., and high
school)
Step 2
Describe each of
the learners based
on your
observation.
Step 3
Validate your
Observation by
interviewing the
learners.
Step 4
Compare them in
terms of their
interest and needs.
The Learners’ CharacteristicandNeeds | LEARNING EPISODE 2
My Tools
Use the activity form provided for you to document you observations.
An Observation Guide for the Learners’ Characteristics
Read the following statements carefully. Then write yourobservation report on the
provided space. Your teacher may also recommend another observation checklist if a more
detailed observation is preferred.
Physical
1. Observe their gross motor skills how they carry themselves, how they move, walk,
run , go up the stair, etc.
2. Are gross movements clumsy or deliberate/smooth?
3. How about their fine motors skills? Writing, Drawing, etc.
Social
1. Describe how they interact with teachers and other adults.
2. Note how they also interact with peers. What do they talk about? What are their
concerns?
Emotional
1. Describe the emotional disposition of temperament of the learners.(happy,
sad ,easily cries, mood shifts)
2. How to they express their wants/needs? Can they wait?
3. How do they handle frustrations?
4. Describe their level of confidence as shown in their behaviour. Are they self-
conscious
Cognitive
1. Describe their ability to use words to communicate their ideas. Note theirs
language proficiency.
2. Describe how they figure out things. Do they comprehend easily? Look for
evidence of their thinking Skills.
3. Were there opportunities for problem solving? Describe how they showed
problem solving abilities.
The Learners’ CharacteristicandNeeds | LEARNING EPISODE 2
Record the data you gathered about the learners’ characteristics and needs this matrix.
This will allow you to compare the characteristic and needs of the learners at different levels.
The items under each domain are by no means exhaustive. These are just sample indicators. You
may add other aspects which you may have observed.

Learners’ Development Matrix
The Learners’ CharacteristicandNeeds | LEARNING EPISODE 2
My Analysis
Write the most salient development characteristics of the learners you
observed. Based on these characteristics, think of implications for the teachers.
High School
Age range of learners
observed 14-15 years old
 Highschool students are
like to stay in their seats
and listen to their teacher.
 Therefore, the teacher should be
energetic while teaching and give
some enjoying activities that related
to their lesson.
 Therefore, the teacher should not
expect that the students will be quiet
while doing their activities.
The Learners’ CharacteristicandNeeds | LEARNING EPISODE 2
My Reflection/Insights
1. While you were observing the learners, did you recall you own experiences when you
were their age? What similarities if differences do you have with learners you observed?
 Yes, One of our similarities is when my teacher is asking a question and I don’t know
the answer I simply ask my seatmates. And one of the differences is even if I am bored
in the class I listen attentively.
2. Think of a teacher you cannot forget for positive or negative reasons. How did she/he
help or not help you with your need (Physical, Emotional, social, and cognitive)? How did
it affect you?
 Ms. Santos, my teacher in highschool is one of the teacher that I cannot forget because
she is my closest teacher and she is helping me in my highschool life by giving me
some ideas in my projects and also giving me advices when I have a problem. I can also
see her that she is a good teacher and that motivates me to be a good teacher.
3. Share your other Insights here.
 In teaching your lesson, there are students that are not interested in the lesson. So that
as a teacher you need to be energetic to catch the attention of your students.

Field study 1 episode 2

  • 1. The Learners’ CharacteristicandNeeds | LEARNING EPISODE 2 /jikm My Learning Episode Overview Episode 2 provides me with an opportunity to observe learners of different ages and grade levels. It highlights the differences in their characteristics and needs. As a future teacher, it is important for me to determine my learners’ characteristics and needs so that I will be able to plan and implement learning activities and assessment that are all developmentally appropriate. My Intended Learning outcomes In this episode, I must be able to differentiate the characteristics and needs of learners from different developmental levels. My Performance Criteria I will be rated along the following:  quality of my observation and documentation,  completeness and depth of analysis,  depth and clarity of classroomobservation-based reflection,  completeness, organization, clarity of portfolio and  time of submission of portfolio. My Learning Essentials Here are major principles of development relevant to this episode: 1. Development is relatively orderly. Development follows directional patterns such as, from the head to toe (cephalocaudal), and from the center of the body then outwards (proximodistal) 2. Development takes place gradually 3. All domains of development and learning physical, social and emotional, and cognitive are important, and they are closely interrelated (NAEYC, 2009) 4. Development proceeds toward greater complexity, self-regulation, symbolic or representational capabilities. (NAEYC, 2009). FS 1 FIELD STUDY Learning Episode
  • 2. The Learners’ CharacteristicandNeeds | LEARNING EPISODE 2 My Map To realize my Intended Learning Outcomes, I will work my way through these steps: Step 1 Observe 3 groups of learners from different levels(preschool, Elem., and high school) Step 2 Describe each of the learners based on your observation. Step 3 Validate your Observation by interviewing the learners. Step 4 Compare them in terms of their interest and needs.
  • 3. The Learners’ CharacteristicandNeeds | LEARNING EPISODE 2 My Tools Use the activity form provided for you to document you observations. An Observation Guide for the Learners’ Characteristics Read the following statements carefully. Then write yourobservation report on the provided space. Your teacher may also recommend another observation checklist if a more detailed observation is preferred. Physical 1. Observe their gross motor skills how they carry themselves, how they move, walk, run , go up the stair, etc. 2. Are gross movements clumsy or deliberate/smooth? 3. How about their fine motors skills? Writing, Drawing, etc. Social 1. Describe how they interact with teachers and other adults. 2. Note how they also interact with peers. What do they talk about? What are their concerns? Emotional 1. Describe the emotional disposition of temperament of the learners.(happy, sad ,easily cries, mood shifts) 2. How to they express their wants/needs? Can they wait? 3. How do they handle frustrations? 4. Describe their level of confidence as shown in their behaviour. Are they self- conscious Cognitive 1. Describe their ability to use words to communicate their ideas. Note theirs language proficiency. 2. Describe how they figure out things. Do they comprehend easily? Look for evidence of their thinking Skills. 3. Were there opportunities for problem solving? Describe how they showed problem solving abilities.
  • 4. The Learners’ CharacteristicandNeeds | LEARNING EPISODE 2 Record the data you gathered about the learners’ characteristics and needs this matrix. This will allow you to compare the characteristic and needs of the learners at different levels. The items under each domain are by no means exhaustive. These are just sample indicators. You may add other aspects which you may have observed. Development Domain High school Indicate age range of children observed: 14-15 years old Physical Gross-motorskills Fine-motorskills Self-helpskills Others  The students know how todance, act and etc.  The students know how to write poems, letter and short story.  The students know to answer some activity or seatworkbyhimself. • 5. The Learners’ CharacteristicandNeeds | LEARNING EPISODE 2 My Analysis Write the most salient development characteristics of the learners you observed. Based on these characteristics, think of implications for the teachers. High School Age range of learners observed 14-15 years old  Highschool students are like to stay in their seats and listen to their teacher.  Therefore, the teacher should be energetic while teaching and give some enjoying activities that related to their lesson.  Therefore, the teacher should not expect that the students will be quiet while doing their activities.
  • 6. The Learners’ CharacteristicandNeeds | LEARNING EPISODE 2 My Reflection/Insights 1. While you were observing the learners, did you recall you own experiences when you were their age? What similarities if differences do you have with learners you observed?  Yes, One of our similarities is when my teacher is asking a question and I don’t know the answer I simply ask my seatmates. And one of the differences is even if I am bored in the class I listen attentively. 2. Think of a teacher you cannot forget for positive or negative reasons. How did she/he help or not help you with your need (Physical, Emotional, social, and cognitive)? How did it affect you?  Ms. Santos, my teacher in highschool is one of the teacher that I cannot forget because she is my closest teacher and she is helping me in my highschool life by giving me some ideas in my projects and also giving me advices when I have a problem. I can also see her that she is a good teacher and that motivates me to be a good teacher. 3. Share your other Insights here.  In teaching your lesson, there are students that are not interested in the lesson. So that as a teacher you need to be energetic to catch the attention of your students.
