1. Persuasive Essay Against Animal Testing
Most people have heard the phrase animal testing, but some are still not aware of what it actually
involves. Animal testing can also be called animal research, and it refers to the experimentation on
animals for many different medical treatments for humans. Several different animals are tested on,
from rodents to primates. It can take place at medical schools, universities, or pharmaceutical
companies. Some animals are bred specifically for medical testing. Others, can be taken from the
wild, and placed in an animal testing facility. Without animal testing, we wouldn't have the
knowledge or successful treatments for: Leukemia and breast cancer, kidney failure and transplants,
Alzheimer's disease, HIV and Aids, polio, and premature birth. Whether...show more content...
1). This horrific statistic is what first made health care workers attempt to use incubators, inspired
by poultry farms, to help save premature babies. These incubators cut the death rate in half;
however, there was still room for improvement. Research in kittens, gerbils, rats, mice, and guinea
pigs showed that young animals, regardless if they are full term, or preterm, were very susceptible
to hearing loss induced by noise. Since preterm babies are 10 times more likely to suffer from
hearing loss, scientists began questioning whether the high noise levels that are found in incubators,
still used today, contribute to hearing loss. Animal testing suggests it does. Premature babies also
suffer from underdeveloped lungs which can cause respiratory distress. In the late 1950s,
researchers discovered that babies who died from respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) lacked a
soap–like substance in their lungs, called surfactants. Surfactants lubricate the lungs and allow the
lungs to easily inflate, and deflate. By injecting surfactants that were created using a mixture from
adult rabbit lungs into preterm rabbit pups researchers were able to successfully treat RDS. The first
successful treatment of a human baby, suffering from RDS, was in 1980.The treatment was made
from cows. There are now synthetic surfactants available that were developed in the United
Kingdom (UAR,

Animal testing should not be used in cosmetic industries as a source of experimentation because it
is unethical and inefficient. It is a cruel way of trying to find results that are not even always
trustworthy. Everyone has a different reaction to different chemicals so why even bother animals for
testing? Also different species can respond differently when exposed to the same chemical soanimal
testing can be inefficient. The results from animal tests can be quite variable and difficult to interpret
therefore it may not be applicable to human beings. Thus, consumer safety still cannot be guaranteed
even after these gruesome tests which are totally unethical. It is also unethical to torture and end the
lives of these animals each year for our own luxury. Everyday cosmetic industries are using
defenseless animals very cruelly just to carry out some most often useless tests. Instead they should
use other alternatives which has been proved to yield better and accurate results than tests involving

Test animals are subjected to intense pain and suffering like burn, scrape and infection. A perfectly
fine rabbit is shaved and chemicals are rubbed onto its bare skin or eye irritation tests is performed
by dripping chemicals into its eyes without any pain relief. Repeated oral force–feeding studies are
conducted to look for signs of general illness or health hazards like cancer or birth defects.
Sometimes these animals are also forced to swallow massive amounts of chemical to determine the
maximum dose that can cause death. The saddest part of this is these tests can take weeks or even
months to come up with a result and these poor animals are tortured every day to get to that result.
At the end of the test, most of the animals are killed either by neck–breaking or decapitation and in
some cases if they can be reused for other experiments, they are abused

Animal Testing has been a huge controversy in the past years. Some believe that testing is
necessary in reaching medical breakthroughs to find cures for a majority of diseases. Unfortunately,
animal testing leads to the suffering and death of millions of animals, and that's why most are
against it. Many wonder, "How similar are our genes to an animal?" Luckily, not all products used
today are tested on animals. Which comes to show that there are ways to avoid using animals for
biomedical research and research for everyday products.
Believe it or not, many of the animals that are used for biomedical research and other forms of testing
aren't even protected. Meaning that many of the animals that are subjected to testing, the Animal
Welfare Act does not protect them from such harm. These animals include; mice, birds, fish, and
reptiles. Even the animals under the AWA are not necessarily protected because not all animals that
are subject to testing are not subjected to what's considered "pain and torture". To add onto the
torture that these animals received, many of the tests done on them have absolutely no purpose in
the end. The animal being tested on, for instance, may never satisfy the requirements needed in order
for a product to be released to the public. Also, with a simple understanding of the principles of
chemistry, it...show more content...

model for the human body. But what about all the other animals they test on that dont need to be?
Those animals obviously aren't great examples for testing, for they do not match our genes as well.
So why do we still test on

Animal Experimentation The first documented case of animal experimentation was in 1628,
meaning that it has been around for almost four–hundred years. Animal experimentation is a
disgusting form of torturing poor, helpless creatures, just for science. Over one–hundred million
animals are killed every year due to animal experimentation. Although animal experimentation has
been around for a very long time, it is time to make a better future for these poor creatures. Animals
should not be used for any type of experimentation. It affects the creature mentally, physically, and
internally. Also the alternatives for animal experimentation are endless, and many animals die
unjustified. Experiments on animals affect the creature mentally, physically,...show more content...
Many people agree with the statement, mainly because they think the animals in labs are treated
humanely, and this is completely false. (ProCon.org) People tend to believe animals are treated
fairly in labs, only because they don't know the truth behind what is actually going on. Most people
are unaware that many lab animals never get to see the sun, have fresh air, and they are constantly
in small, crowded cages. Jane Goodall, a British primatologist, ethologist, anthropologist, and UN
Messenger of Peace, states "In no lab I have visited have I seen so many chimps exhibit such intense
fear. The screaming I heard when chimps were brutally forced to move towards the dreaded needle in
their squeezed cages was, for me, absolutely horrifying," after seeing inside a chimpanzee lab
(Neaus). Animal labs are the farthest thing from humane. Another factor to people being okay with
animal experimentation is because most of their daily supplies come from the experiments. Some
commonly used items are cosmetics, drugs, food additives, household products, pesticides, and
industrial chemicals (Murnaghan). Little do they know that many of those same items can be
created without using animals in the process, but the manufactures choose to use them. If people
knew what actually happened in animal labs, they would immediately change the way they think

II. Ineffectiveness of Animal Testing
A. Animals and humans might share much of their DNA, but we are all built differently and we all
funtion differently. There are many problems with the animal to human researching that occurs and
makes animal testing ineffective.
B. Here are some reasons that animal testing does not work
i. According to Dr. T Page, Less than 2% of human illnesses (1.16%) are ever seen in animals. Over
98% never affect animals.
ii. According to the former scientific executive of Huntingdon Life Sciences, animal tests and human
results agree "5%–25% of the time."
iii. In the New york times, it was posted stated that the two most common illnesses in the Western
world are lung cancer from smoking and heart disease. Neither can be reproduced in lab animals.

Many people believe that there is an extraordinary amount of animals used for animal testing, each
year. However, people consume more than 340 chickens for every research animal used. Because
humans and animals are very similar biologically, they are affected by many of the same illnesses
and conditions, such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. Animalresearch has enriched
comprehensive understanding and treating conditions such as brain injury, Cystic Fibrosis, Malaria,
and many others. Animal testing should continue in the U.S. Testing is safer for animals than it is
for humans. Animals are the closest thing to humans on our planet. Mice are 98% genetically
similar to humans, and chimpanzees share 99% of their DNA with humans. Animal research has
been found to put no human lives at risk. Experiments can take place to determine if the idea or

unfavorable outcomes....show more content...

Throughout history, animal testing has played a monumental role in leading to new discoveries
and human benefits. However, what many people tend to forget are the millions of animals that are
tortured and killed during these painful, deadly experiments. Imagine being a family pet, but
instead of living in a warm home with a caring family, living locked up in a small metal cage, only
being let out to swallow harmful chemicals, to be poked and prodded with needles, and to be
injected with chemicals. And after the animal's use for testing is over, they are either killed or die
because of their injuries. This is an impractical, unsafe way to find out the safety of everyday
products. Animal testing is an impractical, inhumane method of cosmetic testing not worth the
resulting multitude of animal deaths when humans could easily be substituted as the test subject.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) states that every year, more than 100 million
animals, such as mice, rats, frogs, dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, monkeys, fish, and
birds, are all killed every year in U.S, Laboratories. Testing infects animals with diseases that they
would not normally infect them, chemicals blind innocent kittens, tiny mice grow tumors as large
as their own bodies, and rats suffer seizures. These unnecessary outcomes make sure that a product
is safe for human use. The reality is that the majority of animal experiments do not contribute to
improving human health. It is ridiculous when animals are tested on because they have done
absolutely nothing to deserve being harmed. Using humans as test subjects would be far less
wasteful and far more efficient for the whole human race. Humans would serve as even better test
subjects because they can verbally express the pain and the specific effects of various cosmetics

Today we face a problem that may seem ridiculous but is actually very serious. So many animals
lose their lives for a cause they did not sign up for. Not only that, these helpless animals have no
real voice to speak up for themselves. PETA gives no real evidence of actually helping animals in
this predicament thus why they are not the right choice to speak for these animals. Animal testing
and experimentation should be banned for its harmful effects on animals and the world. Animal
testing and experimentation does as much damage to the world, as it does to the animals being tested
on. It's expensive. It costs the government an enormous amount of money to feed, house, and even
purchase the animals. The equipment and materials needed are also included in that huge fee.
Basically, it's wasting a large sum of money. Not only that, it causes unnecessary harm to innocent
animals in "the name of science". Our world is already losing rainforests and habitats for such
animals. Truly science can be experimented and used without needing an animal to get results. Why
would a rabbit need to use shampoo, when they are able to bathe themselves fine without it. Is it
now fashionable for monkeys to use mascara and hair gel in the wild? The world doesn't need a new
mascara, hairspray, or hair dye. Our world needs animals living and breathing without human
interference.
There are other ways to get results without testing on animals. Humans can just as easily be test
subjects themselves.

Testing on animals has been a common thing since ancient times of Aristotle or even before that.
Testing in the 19th century was the peak of animal testing and it became more of an issue to the
animal rights enthusiast. Testing on animals for cosmetics has been done for a long time in order to
protect people from receiving an allergic reaction that can be permanently damaging. All though
people might think it's a good idea to test on animals. Animals don't react the same way we do, our

Some people believe it reduces the risk of harming a human since its considered inhuman to test on
humans. Testing puts animals through very uncomfortable situations like going blind because some
sort of eye drops were inserted in their eyes or getting a skin burn because some hand cream was
defective. Understanding how this can be very catastrophic if it were tested on a human but why do
we use products that are harmful to humans even when we know it can hurt them.
Now instead of putting animals though that torture there a various options to alternative testing. For
example the researchers in Johns Hopkins university test various products cosmetics or not in test
tubes and has claimed they had success. At the University of Connecticut they have been trying to
use mathematical equations. These methods aren't the solution entirely but it's a good step in the
right direction. One they aren't testing on animals, two they aren't testing on humans, three they
aren't testing on anything that can be harmed in any way. It might take years to or months or even
days till we figure out a permanent solution but until then we have to make sure the animals don't

Some of the world's most beloved and beautiful animals are exposed to brutal, intolerable conditions
each day– merely for the benefit of human kind. In fact, over 100 million animals are poisoned,
burned, immobilized, abused, and utterly stripped of their freedom as they undergo multiple
commercial and scientific tests every year. These tests are physically and emotionally demanding on
the most harmless of creatures, including dogs, cats, and rabbits. Animals are subjected to severe and
intense situations where they have no way of escaping. The Animal Welfare Act saves certain
animals from extreme abuse, however the amount of protection given to each animal is very
minimal ("Animal Testing"). Because the Animal Welfare Act is unable to protect nearly 100 million
animals in experimentation processes from inhumane treatment, commercial and scientific testing in
laboratories should be banned when cheaper alternatives can be used as replacement. Commercial
testing is the process where commercial products are experimented on animals to identify if the
substances threaten the health of human individuals. Some of the most common household items
are tested, including items produced by top cosmetic brands like Maybelline, CoverGirl, Chanel,
Sephora, and L'Oreal. Pesticides, windex cleaners, vaseline, Kleenex, band–aids, post–it notes,
deodorant, toothpaste, perfumes, and food additives are among countless other products that abuse
the existence of animals ("These Beauty Brands").

Hurt, injured, abused, starved, that is how animals are treated in testing new products, like Tylenol,

the animals open to see what changes happen and can scar and even kill the target of the operation.
This, as you know, is very bad to spend lives. This also brings my next piece of evidence up. It can

Some might even consider it abuse. It is something that goes unnoticed every day because of the
benefits that humans gain from it. Animal testing is overshadowed by advancements in the medical
field. However, no product or medicine makes it acceptable.
Just because humans are considered a more powerful species, doesn't give us the right to treat
animals as if they are nothing. Would you want to be treated that way by a more dominant species
just for their benefit? It is clearly unfair. If you pull your cat's tail, it yells because it hurts. Animals
experience pain. They go through the same pain that we would if we were subjected to painful,
deadly experiments. Whether it's a dog, cat, rabbit, mouse, chimpanzee, or human, pain is something
we all feel.
However, when you compare the anatomy of a cat to that of a human, you can find numerous
differences, making animal testing unreliable and sometimes even dangerous. Some might say that
animal testing is crucial to scientific research but how can something be so crucial if the results are
not even completely accurate?
Luckily, there are alternatives for animal testing including computer models, cell structures, and

Proponents of animal testing say that animals do not have rights, so it is acceptable to experiment

animals because they do not have... language or moral judgment that humans do is no more
justifiable than discriminating against human beings with severe mental impairments". This
metaphor justifies that it is unfair to attack their species without restraint, but refrain from doing the
same to ours. If animals can still feel pain and endure suffering, then why should humans inflict this
upon another living species? To go further, humans are as much of an animal than any other
creature on this Earth is. Scientists and researchers categorise virtually everything on this planet as
either a plant or an animal, and as humans are not plants, we are animals. So why should one
species of animal be able to inflict pain on another? This is, again, speciesism against another

90% of drugs fail in human trials despite promising results in animal tests. Animal testing is not only
cruel but highly unreliable, even dangerous, and it should not be allowed. The continued use of
animals to test the effectiveness of medications and health interventions for humans is comparable to
using smoke signals instead of phone calls as a method of communication. In all reality, animal
testing has never truly worked because of its ineffectiveness, wasteful tactics, unethical ways, and
there are other methods available. Now first of all, animal testing is ineffective. Animals do not get
many of the human diseases that people get like major types of heart disease, many types of cancer,
HIV, Parkinson's disease, or schizophrenia. Signs of these diseases are artificially induced in animals
in laboratories in an attempt to mimic the human disease. These experiments make the complexity of
human conditions look insignificant. Human conditions are affected by multiple variables such as
genetics, socioeconomic factors, and deeply–rooted psychological issues. An analysis of over 100
mouse cell types found that only 50% of the DNA responsible for regulating genes in mice could be
